Uh. Hello. New guy over here...

Obligatory history: I've been playing Quake and its descendants since the original Quake came out. I'm no great player - never been seen in a real deathmatch, and never quite managed the speed-running feats seen here and elsewhere.

Anyhow, a few years ago, to amuse myself I decided to have a go at speed-running; preferably something no-one else seemed to be doing, and something that wasn't too hard.

I came up with 'Race for the Dopefish' - which is just that - get to the Dopefish in the Crypt of Decay in as quick a time as possible.

Too easy you say? That's not all - Your only weapon is a gun with one bullet in it...

Rather than ramble on and on, I've hastily knocked together a webpage for RFTD at http://www.cyreksoft.yorks.com/quake/rftd.html

It'd be good to know what real speed-runners make of it.

You know you don't have to do episode 1 to start episode 2, right? Smiley

True, but where would the fun be in running just three maps? Smiley

I got a score of -99.

My file might claim I got -100, but it's lying. I thought I got 21 on e1m7, but apparently not. Smiley
Hell is where the heart is.
Rules 5 and 6 are a little contentious.  Rocket jumps CHEATING? :-)

Oh, and rule 2. No. You don't need a bullet in e1m3. You can get the zombies to hit the target for you.

I'm obviously waaay out of my depth here. Smiley

All that hips-wiggling stuff makes me dizzy, and I haven't the patience to lure zombies into doing tricks for me.

That said, I think I can see room for improvement in Lag's e2m3 - the blue armor is probably skippable and there was a bit of bad luck with the shambler towards the end (unless that somehow provided a speed-up?).

Yeah, I wouldn't call any of those demos optimal except maybe the e2m1, though a more skilled zig-zagger might be able to get 9.

My zombie lure in e1m3 was very slow, and I get stuck in a few levels... meh. Half-assed, but I did it all inside 2 hours.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
You can too press the button with an ogre-grenade (go near the button and wait for a grenade to hit you, it will generally activate the button). it is probably faster to lure the ogre.

It became a simple nacked run.
(so i think all that "rules" for shooting only one bullet should be remove), it is better not shooting at all.
