Hello SDA members,

Just a small request really, it's nice to see someone other than Radix updating the site (as I presume this takes stress off him) but I have one small issue with his grammar. It's really not that hard to use capital letters etc and it keeps the site looking professional.

I know it's picky, but it really bugged me. I hope you take this into considering and no offence torwards Nate is meant. I'm sure you have perfect grammar when you put your mind to it! Smiley

Jonathan.

Ah. The irony of a spelling mistake in a post like that is noted!  Cheesy

If you knew nate, you'd not be bothered by it. He almost never uses capitals. Tongue

Read his original post.
Ok...but besides him?

Well, it immediately struck me! I looked up just to check that it was still Radix, then saw it was nate, went 'ahhh', and just looked at the links. It was slightly annoying to read without the capital letters.

While it might not be particularly important, it is a consideration, should this site need to be taken seriously for any reason (i.e. vs. G4).
Speed is the key.
I often make the mistake to use capital letters for many words that shouldn´t have them. I´m often corrected at school.  Roll Eyes

MGS for PS1 forever.
There was a writer way back when that refused to use upper case letters and periods. He wrote several novels this way and got away with it. What this means is that if you know the rules, you can break 'em.

Not using capital letters?  Psh.  At least he's not in this crowd:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- About one in 20 adults in the U.S. is not literate in English, meaning 11 million people lack the skills to handle many everyday tasks, a federal study shows.
You ever find a forum so bad, you start looking at posts to see whether the posters actually speak english or some other language?
Bah, Nate's earned the right to not use capital letters.

I'm a writer and I don't know the difference between an adverb and a verb. The way I know I messed something up in a sentence is if it sounds wrong. The definitive way to see if you made an error is to read it out loud. While there are people that tell me I've made this grammer error or this other one...I often ask them, "What would you say if I told you I did it on purpose?"

Me thinks they should hire better teachers just so people don't slide through. I went to the graduation of one of my cousins and the announcer said that 75% of the class were honor students and how amazing that was. My first thought was: Why don't they made the curriculum harder?

And when it comes to nate...

Speaking of bad typing skills, there's even forums that have awards for such.

A sample work?

For Mkt2015, all you need to know about the two:
Verb- action word (duh)
Adverb- modifies noun/verb, and is basically any word ending with "ly".
My teachers and some writers advise against ever using adverbs, but I usually do it anyways.

"Usually" modifies "do".

Btw, I'm not claiming to be better than anyone at grammar.
for more on where this style of typing comes from, please see the first m2k2 history block.

once i made the decision to use it in my blog, it was pretty much final.

Allow me to add that Nate has perfect grammar. Capitalisation is an entirely different thing. I have no problem with Nate's lack of capital letters for a few reasons:

1. He does know how to ue them properly.
2. He just chooses not to.

Easier way to remember: an adverb adds to a verb.

And, soteos... your teachers are crazy. I've never heard of any reason to not use adverbs. It makes about as much sense as not using pronouns or adjectives.

Read Stephen King's "On Writing". King describes his hatred of adverbs. "The adverb is not your friend."

Edit: if anyone actually cares about this, here you go:

Conclusion: they're ok if you don't use them frequently. Grin

I see... that makes sense.

When you said "my teachers advise against ever using them", the image I got was of a teacher telling a bunch of kids, "Okay, this is a noun. Here's what they do. This is a verb. Here's what they do. This is an adverb. Whatever you do, NEVER EVER use them." Which is a bit silly.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I guess some of you would not be a fan of E.E. Cummings.

Arkarian, I have no problem with people's grammar and all that, but I think if anything, a reason why someone might have a problem is precisely if they know how to use them properly and choose not to.

Strangeness, in technical(professional/business) writing, it's bad form to use adjectives and adverbs and generally "flowery" writing. The word "very" is almost a cardinal sin. Of course, technical writing is stupid, but it does exist, and people use it... to write memos.

Hah.

Yeah, poets will start another three pages of debate, poetic license and all; you wouldn't even want to begin scrutinizing the works of Dickinson, Whitman, etc..

Hah, then there are guys like Mamet, Camus, Beckett, vernacular writers like Twain, Jonson, Wilson, Dickens, and etc. for intentional punctuation misuse in prose.  For that matter, I remember reading several pages in Faulkner's Sound and the Fury that contained no capitalization or punctuation whatsoever [twas obviously intentional]... Benjamin Franklin, on the other hand, atrociously capitalized most every single noun he used.

Back when he lived, that was proper English. Everyone did it.
