I think it would be cool if every month, an older popular game without a run was nominated to be the "game of the month." Then you would have lots of people competing to get the best time on that game, and it would generate a lot of excitement.
Thread title:
How many people do you think would be willing to purchase the game just for the occasion (let alone find a copy of it for sale)?

Also, I'm afraid most games that are old, popular and speedrun-friendly have already been done. I like the idea of monthly challenges but honestly I don't see it working that way.
There are only 15 NES games and 16 SNES games on the site. There are a lot more classic games that a lot of people would have.
Yay, way to ostracize the people who didn't keep their 16-bit hardware once again. Sad
Sleeping Terror
That's your own damn fault, and no one is trying to ostracize you.
MGS for PS1 forever.
Well I'm lucky enough to have recently bought a snes and I'm on my way to getting games. I have about 12 right now...

I never had a snes way back when.

It's already painful enough as it is. Please, at least let me have the satisfaction of being a victim. Sad
Hey Ho Let's Go
We have competitions at www.speeddemosarchive.com/quake  Wink
welcome to the machine
I imagine this competition would involve no more work than stickying a topic saying 'the game for this month is <insert game>.  gogogo!'
Hell is where the heart is.

And then everyone's entry would need timing, verifying uploading, linking to and posting. :-)
