It is the first game i tried to speedrun, unfortunately i dont have any videos to show because i didnt own a video recorder (and i still dont :().
Still it's a great game and i can share some tips and the times i got  :). Someone named Mkt2015 did a run too, it was never approved but i have his times (still i think his time for 2nd stage is not valid).

The game has an ingame timer, after each stage you can see the time but not when you finish a boss stage. The time for the stage just after the boss will thus count the stage time + the boss time.
I dont have times for the last boss.(One way to time the last boss fight is to do the boss stage and then another stage and substract the stage time).
edit: the game was run with any% and segmented (1 level = 1 segment)

Tips:

-Jump then roll is not faster than just running, and even if it is, its so marginal than 1 miss roll will negate the advance.
-Attacking when jumping is preferred over just attacking because you dont have to wait the animation to end before moving again.
-Opening chests and buying stuffs dont run the ingame timer
-The advanced throwing shield can activate crystals (it auto aims crystals aswell) : crystals phases can be done very quickly that way.
-Jump+Attack allow you to jump a little farther :
can be used in the stone stage, at the first 3 stones on the first stone you can jup to the next switch.
in the stone stage at the "puzzle" at the end you can jump on the first stone when its going down then jump on the cliff; activate the last switch and jump+attack to the stone and exit the level.(this was not done during my speedrun)
-On the first stage you can grab the key while killing the guardian (without the key falling to the floor).

Boss tips:

-first boss: you can kill him very quick without him moving. You need to attack him x times then wait, repeat till he's dead (i dont remember the x).
-old wounds boss: i killed him by cornering him and attacking with the right tempo (2 attacks + wait). He blocks one of the two attacks, but he doesnt move.

I really think it's a typo from him because 5'19'' for stage 3 is awfully long.
After a research under maximo on the forum maybe the correct times are 1'31'' - 4'24'' - 7'43'' (rel: 1'31'' - 2'53'' - 3'19''). Source http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php?topic=858.0. Seems a lot more likely.
And i dont remember what i did on stage 2 nor what it looks like , i did the run 2-3 years ago  :P. I remember loosing some time near the end to grab more gold because the upgrades are expensive and you must purchase them in order ( money would be the biggest issue if you use the shortcut to pass the stones puzzle).

Actually I was running this game long time ago but back then I had no way of recording 60hz so I ended up not doing it. (50hz runs slower in this game) I have forgotten pretty much everything about the game but I have some times for Normal difficulty:

Mkt2015(hard) - sarou(normal)

The First Strike          1'31" - 1'09" = 22 seconds faster -> 1:32'51"
Into the Fire          3'55" - 3'36" = Huh? -> ???? <- mkt2015 time must be wrong like zoonel said
No Sanctuary          7'43" - 5'42" = 2 minutes 1 second faster -> 1:31'12"

The House Crasher  ------
Forest of Fear          13'12" - 9'24"  = 3 minutes 48 seconds faster -> 1:29'25"
Gallows Gorge          19'26" - 14'03" = 5 minutes 23 seconds faster -> 1:27'50"
Sinister Stones          25'32" - 19'07" = 6 minutes 25 seconds faster -> 1:26'48"

Cyclocks         ------
Down With the Ship  32'53" - 23'28" = 9 minutes 25 seconds faster -> 1:23'48"

Well, this thread has been dormant for quite some time, but I'm currently in the process of routing the game out and trying to see what I can do with it.

Levels are relatively straight forward in terms of movement and AoZ seems to have more much more combat in the run then GtG ever did. I think it might take some time to optimize these required battles.

Does anyone have any insight into the runs mentioned earlier in the thread. Obviously, they are from years back, but any information in regards to power-ups, general level strats and anything else would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to put some time into seeing what I can do over the weekend, so any inisght would be great. Otherwise, I'll post my own personal findings in this thread as I come across them.
Hi wutangclam, I'm also trying to speedrun this game. I couldn't find any videos unfortunately.
I'm playing in Normal mode for now and I did a test run. The biggest issue is the money, it seems hard to finish a run with more than 1000 gold in total, and buying some stuff takes time because you have to kill all the monsters around the merchant. So actually I plan to only buy the Mighty Drill (310, saves around 30 seconds on Bane's second form) and a Grim meter upgrade (520, saves a lot of time on Achille). So I need 830 gold for the merchant in the Soulcrusher (it takes around 10 seconds to talk to him). I don't know if it's the best strat but I'll try it, I'm actually doing a more serious segmented run attempt

Here are my times, the run is in normal (Pal 60 htz) :

Hello everyone !!! I began 2 month ago to run the
game too (in hard mode). I was taking this game really relaxed and wanted to run it in single segment. But finally when i was changing my mind about segmented, A-M released his youtube's playlist. The stage 7 is the best way to improve what i already found. Except this stage, the only thing that is needed to be improved are requiered battles.
The advantage of hard mode is the numbers of enemies and rewards they left, that makes gold easier to collect (and probably time gained by purchasing power ups like second grim meter earlier ).

Glad to see that you are still active on this game Avorton. I thought you were doing SS runs only, do you have a PB in SS ?
And yeah, like you I have no idea how Zoonel did a such great time on levels 8-9. Maybe he found some crazy strats, or maybe he is using a different version of the game (US or japanese) that has some differences, but I don't know it's just hypothesis...

Glad you're still active Cheesy i posted my times in the case  someone would be interested by them.

I am, but in hard mode, required battles has to be perfectly known and train and your playlist show me some tricks that i ignore...  so i'm still working on SS when tired of running the same level again and agai for the segmented Smiley

Anyway i have both, EU and Jap. What i am sure about, is that there are no differences between EU & US versions. Differences between JAP and EU/US are minors but change a little the gameplay. The less signficants are ennemies. blue bugs instead of red ones or enemies add/remove on the EU/US. The power of hammer isn't the same, less powerfull on JAP version about high grasses and roots, (only 2hits  needed on EU/US - 3 required on the JAP) so to keep decent times, i have to keep an eye on the super charge meter (red one) which allows me pre shot them with shield throw.

I have found a new way to gain some time or improve the rate of success from certain "sword tricks"
Like Zoonel said, in his first post jump + sword (X+SQ) gives some sustain on the jump, but the "shield trick": if you throw shield while jumping, you gain almost half more sustain (X+O) in the air  and  jump + vertical attack (X+TRI with hammer equiped) gives you also some height and as sustain as "shield trick". I find a new shortcut on the level 7 and that meks me gain 10 seconds on your ref time A-M (bad luck on the records makes me lose 3 seconds, but more than 250 tries only on this level...) by now it is the only "big" mistake i let go.
