Indeed, he does use some pin-point accuracy things. He jumps over really barriers in several levels. I'm not too sure how keen you would be to try that out on a real console, it looks pretty hard.

Firstly, I'd like to thank DK64 for pointing out the run existed..because I would've never knew about it. >.>;

I realizied I had the wrong rom, and want to thank mjf314 for showing which proper rom to get. So now I had everything to view it, and all went well until halfway through 2-5. Because I was watching a big chunk at 425% speed. >>;

Well, I took alot of notes, and have about 3 pages of diagrams I need to try out. He showed me some shortcuts I didn't realize before. Such as 1-8, skipping the traditional method for getting hit on purpose facing left so the baby goes right then hitting the pot with 2 eggs then grabbing with tongue rather than reaching then aiming percisly at the red switch simply blew my mind.

My new goal now is to ATTEMPT to get a run as close to this emulated one as possible. If so then sub 2 hour may be possible, since he overalled a near 1h 40m, so minus the glitch skips I'd say I have a new goal.

Thanks again DK64, you gave me a shitload of determination now. Smiley x 40.

No problem!  Getting even close to that would be a big surprise!!  TAS runs are quite impossible to even challenge (maybe not Mario Bros, which is about 20 secs beyond the rec)...

DID anyone see the 3-8 boss battle!!  It looks like the programmers intended you to beat pete before the run starts!!  They had text saying "oh my".  That alone makes the run worth watching!!!

The AVI is out now, only by BT, but I'll post the link here;
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/torrents/supermarioworld2-tas-spezzafer.avi.torrent

Edit---------------------->  It seems Marshy does that too (skip the piranha), so it is possible during a speedrun!

Oh yeah, it's really not that obscure a trick.

Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Alright, I downloaded the AVI file, watched and have 7 pages of notes from probably the best 1h 38.76m of my life. xDDD

I'm going to see how many manuvers I can do. But I have noticed what advantages this guy had:

A) He could move the sprite at least 3 times faster than standard console 30 fps could, as in he could move it at least every 10 frames instatly.

B) He was able to flutter kick infinately without losing height.

C) (though this is listed in his comments) He does his acceleration thing to walk faster.

I plan to try out the notes I have for tommorrow, and try out a NEW single segment monday. Also to make it clear now, DON'T expect me to be able to spit a shell let it recochete off a wall 2 times, jump, land on top, then do the excell flutter jump to a door...Freakin' impossible! xDD

Wont work?  Read this:

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/movies.cgi?id=362

Look at codec problems.  You need H264 codec.

Best hour and 30 min of your life!  Told you that you should watch that! Smiley Cheesy

Wasn't Marshy able to flutter kick infinitely?

Also, you probably already read this, but here are the author's notes:

Oh yeah, wasn't sluggy the unshaven incredible??  I mean he had to use the fricken bats!!!!

I like this site name cause it's easy to remember.

More like ten... anyway, 10 seconds over a 5-minute game is 200 seconds over a 100-minute game, so if you can get the record within three minutes you're *that* good.

DID anyone see the 3-8 boss battle!!  It looks like the programmers intended you to beat pete before the run starts!!  They had text saying "oh my".  That alone makes the run worth watching!!!

I'm actually pretty sure they knew. I've done it, no special cheats or anything, you just have to know how. I find it funny how they didn't know how to fix it and make it impossible so they just gave him an alternate text box... Tongue

EDIT: Oh yeah, about the H264 thing, ffdshow really gets the job done. Nothing else seems to work for me, anyway.

AH, I didn't know it was ten seconds...  And I think your math for the 3 minutes is wrong.  I think it shouldn't progess linearly, but more like quadratically or even cubicly, because you need to factor endurance in, but I see what you are saying Smiley (The guy who challenged Mario Bros TAS is amazing.  How many re-records did they need for the sub 5 min run?  And the speedrunner did it in only a couple!)

I was impressed by that 3-8 trick because I had never seen this scenario.  I also think it was more of an easter-egg, rather than a kludge, because the same thing is possible on sluggy the unshaven, except that your egg doesn't harm him.

Yeah, ffdshow does the best job for that codec.  It made my WMP lag (on win2000) but using VLC, everything works!

Off topic posts have been deleted. This thread is to discuss the run in question, not to throw around insults about being unable to watch some other run.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Okay, wasted today praciticing new tricks revealed from the emulated run. (Thanks again DK!) Several new habits I have now include:

1) the precise timed, and pressured jumping to prevent slow down when traveling along uneven surface.

2) On the last part on 6-8, with the scrolling screen and the annoying wizard, I can recochete my eggs! Wink

I won't be at my home comp tommorow so I won't be able to practice with the emulator x[ (remember I'm still waiting on my cousin's GB Player). But whenever I do come back, I'll be doing another practice single segment recorded with Snes9x, in .SMC format. Whenever I do, if anyone has the time contact me via AIM or MSN Messenger so I can send it to you, and you may watch it, and point out any additional mistakes before I go onto finalizing my strategy then proceding with making my VHS. Wink

You can't really know. The difference between the tool-assisted and realtime speedruns really depends on the game and how much work has been put into finding the glitches. A game like SMB - where you're already running through just about as fast as the game will let you - will have a lot less difference than a game like YI (or even Super Metroid) where there are glitches to run faster or jump better that just can't be repeatedly executed perfectly by a human playing at 100% speed.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Okay, I attempted to do a SMC file of a run of my strategy through Yoshi's Island, but I kept screwing up becuase I kept getting nervous. My palms would get sweaty, and everything seemed to happen slower than usual, etc. =\

I didn't stop that until I reached World 4. And at that point I had died 4 times. Also I only have 1 chance to make a first impression, and the beta run I release I want to at be semi-impressive. =\

Tommorrow, hopefully, if I do better, I'l release it. It'll be hosted. It'll be a ZIP file containing a folder containing:

1) SNES9x 1.43+ EXE file
2) .dll thingy
3) SNES9x read me
4) Yoshi Island rom
5) Trihex_beta_run_yi.smc (beta run movie)

Wink
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
5) Trihex_beta_run_yi.smc (beta run movie)

Smc?  Don't you mean smv, the format for Snes9x movies?  Smc is the format for saved games.

You've got a good point there, I never thought of it like that.  I guess you could draw guidelines for types of games.  Platformers seems to be the fastest games that are spedran (is that a correct verb-tense?).  So it is most likely harder to pick up time in these types of games.  However, if you try running rpgs, TAS can manipulate luck MUCH to your advantage and etc...  So you DO have a point there Smiley

@trihex, just a quick question:

You probably already know this, but in the frog boss level (forgot the name) are you flutter kicking in the second to last room across the spikes?  It looks risky, but its quite easy to do esp if you use vertical walls to stop you from going far.

Oh, and question of legal issues, are you allowed to distribute the ROM?  I didn't want to raise this question, and hope anyone would see it, and rather make it more discrete, but I'd rather keep site as legal/safe as possible... Tongue

Yes, I do use that short cut and don't slow down at all. You'll see tommorrow. Grin And yes, it is legal to have the rom on your hard drive for 24 hours. After that it is illegal if you don't already own the game. As for distrubting the roms, that may be illegal, so either way, you're not in trouble. >_>

It's only legal if you own the game and made the rom yourself as a backup copy.  It's always illegal to download or distribute roms.  The 24 hour rule doesn't exist and was completely made up by rom sites.

Edit: And another thing that they made up is the thing about the internet privacy act signed by Bill Clinton that says you can't enter the site you're affiliated with the government.  Rom sites aren't exactly the best source of legal informantion.

Well, its completely legal to distribute the SMV? file, so if you make one (without the rom, if you know what I mean ;)) you can easily distribute that.  All a movie file is a record of button presses, and button presses aren't illegal.

And I'm glad you take that shortcut.  I'm in the middle of playing YI from the begining, and am just scouting individual levels for quick/easy time savers. Smiley
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

Yeah, distributing smv files is completely legal.  Also, don't worry too much about having roms, tri hex, lots of people have them and it's very rare that people get in trouble for it.  There might be some motivation for Nintendo to go after a big company if it was distributing illegal roms, but it's not worth it for them to go after individuals.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Geocities has stupid bandwidth limits and I can't download it now.  Can you put it on a site like yousendit.com?  They let you temporarily store a file for a week, so just upload it there and post the link you get here.

Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Okay, I'm officially ready to do my run. Just a matter of waiting on the Game Boy Player. In the meantime I'll be making my VHS tape overpacked. I plan to outdo Marshmellow in several of his runs. Today I already did 1-1, I bested it by 10 seconds.  You can download the SMV file and see yourself, I take an entirely different route, and skip the stairs and the beanstalk flower:

» 1-1, 1m 17s run.
http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0CFYL87SUIA801VGUSA8K34VOG
» Trihex single seg beta run
http://s36.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=125WEDYVA3VDS22UI08MY1DD3M

I'll post more runs as I perfect them. ^^; Also, what happned? No one has responded to my beta run. x[
Hey, I IMed you about it.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Okay, I'm just waiting on the GB Player at this point. I plan to submit a VHS with the following:

1) 100% 1-1 run at 1m 17s.
2) single segment of Super Mario Advance 3
3) 100% segmented Super Mario Advance 3*

* As in I get 100% on every level required to reach 6-8.

I want to do a run where I get 100% on everything. But it'll have to be segmented by worlds, so a 6 peice run of 100%. Excluding the Extra levels and Bonus level unlocks.

My question to Radix about it is that doing a 100% run, it's almost impossible to avoid bonus challenge, would that count against me? If so, then I just won't do it then. =\

Of course. I don't remove any internal periods from the timing for games without timers.
