I'll do another stream Friday evening at 6pm Eastern.

Cool, I might tune in for like the first hour or so.

LOL, If you leave and I still haven't finished the first time, then you know I'm doing REALLY bad.  My runs are averaging 35-36 min. of play time (excluding the map screen).
I want off the ride....
My Progress:

SoTN - I am aiming for Sub 40 and yeah... so hopefully it works. I am still practicing but most of what i need to do is cut down on random which is hard as hell anyway. Just attempts to keep me fresh.

Simon's Quest - Well... If i wasn't missing stupid jumps I'd feel better. I keep doing them a little early... but we'll see. I break the habit quickly after doing it for a bit. A lot of rust has fallen on this game since I didn't really want to play it on my NES after fixing it.. my bad. A lot of emulation practice is ironing out the details. Would feel safer to have kareshi prep'ed just in case.

Secret Of Mana - I just have been playing it casually on the side. Donno if i have what it takes to keep up with molotov and yama but we'll see..

smrpg practice run live (with capture card this time)

stream ended. thanks to everyone who watched the practice run! i know i saw tjp and zenicrev there at least. unfortunately, any future streams in '09 will probably be more of those fun glare fests you all love; the capture card is my friend's and the stream was from her place. but regardless, i hope you enjoyed it.

the run was approximately 15 minutes faster than the one in the previous live stream, but a lot of things were done that actually made it blow the thing out of the water up until the final area. i kinda forgot to go back and get the lazy shell after valentina (as i'm used to doing in runs by now) and with that i also didn't make a typical stop for power blasts + crystallines that i farmed frog coins for in land's end. so a few minutes were wasted just in the farming since the coins weren't used, and then all stat boosting had to be done with geno boost for the rest of the game. i also failed to get even close to enough jumps on the super jump for the attack scarf again, so i had to make due with the troopa pin, safety ring, and exp booster/rare scarf as the primary equipment.

but yea everything was going pretty smoothly for the most part, but in the final area of the factory (where you fight the factory manager and stuff), the battles took WAY TOO LONG HOLY CRAP. gunyolk alone took over 10 minutes, and smithy decided to be a major dick and rotate between his head that uses shredder and heals and the tank head which decided to use its insta death bullet move on mario a lot. i only got the wizard head for like 2 turns the whole battle. i got some seriously bad luck, but even then if i had standard luck i wouldnt see the run being better than 4:45-4:50 with how everything else went.

so basically, the biggest factor in the run is the super jump. i need to do a lot of practicing just on that move in the next few days so i can guarantee getting the attack scarf in a run. my runs from a couple months ago that got the attack scarf but didnt have death abuse and didn't really have a very solid plan for the majority of the run got around the same times i've been getting now, so i imagine that if i can get that equipment and stick with the plans of recent runs (still not sure about bothering to get the lazy shell, because it seemed to go pretty smooth up until the factory and i may have just screwed up drastically somehow in the battles there), then the 4:30 target i set for the marathon would be much more doable.

so, no set plans for streaming this week, but i'll be damned if i don't get the super jump down semi-decently before too long.

edit ~ the stream was recorded in 2 parts, so in case anyone wants to see anything specific from the run, you gotta dig through the content in these vids:

part 1: up until end of nimbus land
part 2: valentina battle to end of game

I don't know if I'll have any time left to prepare for it, but maybe. Last time I played took 4 or 5 lives.

Did an unrecorded/unstreamed DKC single-segment practice last night after romscout's stream just for fun.  I got 33-34 minutes, 1-2 minutes slower than my published segmented speedrun, so wow.  I still had a couple of deaths, but I eliminated one of the risky parts in Oil Drum Alley -- just by waiting for a half-a-second before doing a jump.  I also got the Mine Cart Madness in-air jump trick the first time -- awesome.

So, unless I'm in a bad mood, I should have NO problem coming in under 50 min for the marathon.  Good stuff.

what does 33-34 minutes translate to real-time?

It's about 45-50 min., so I don't think my time needs to be adjusted.

well last time i played i kept missing stupid jumps; its getting better.. I donno if you'll need to anymore as in the last few goes; i've gone from missing stupid jumps to doing better. I think I can do it (within a continue); as the luck seem to stabilize now... but be ready kareshi... incase i get sour.
Talk to the Hand
I've admittedly cut it a bit closer than I would have liked, but I think I'm finally at or near my potential with TMNT.

Had good Technodrome luck today (First location I checked!), which allowed me to pull off a 24M, 17.96s run, and that was with some of the stuff I'm doing to mitigate risk (Swapping out Don when there's a chance of insta-death [Especially in Area 4. Losing Leo, Raph or Mike is annoying and will cost me time, but I can recover from it. Losing Don means I might as well just kill off the other three Turtles and continue]; using the no-risk Shredder method). Given the reputation "That (*&(*& dam" has, I think the audience will be impressed with how I handle it. That is, if they even notice that I'm playing a game past the commentary that will be provided by Freddy "SDA Sex God" Andersson. Wink

Note that, based on where the Technodrome decides to show up, the time on TMNT is wildly variable relative to the length of the run as a whole, and there's not a lot I can do about it.
Waiting hurts my soul...

Cheesy Roll Eyes

I'm excited for this, only 6 more work days until marathon starts means it'll be here in no time.  Good luck guys.

Ok, my last Donkey Kong Country stream before the marathon will be tonight at 7:00 pm EASTERN.  The link is: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tj-vg-sr

My goal time is 33-34 min. on the game timer.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay, I have some bad news, and some really bad news. Sad

The bad: Pablo Bert can't come to MAGFest. This means no Battletoads race, but Pianotoads will still go on (Kareshi and Emptyeye are definitely coming).

The really bad: Stanski can't come to MAGFest. A drunk driver hit him while he was walking and his leg is now messed up (he has to get x-rays today). He can't come to MAGFest as a result.

Altered Beast will now be a solo game (unless if someone wants to join me, it's not hard), Mike89 is now running Sonic 2 (and doing 3 hours of games in a row :o).

I'm not sure about Bloodlines - Stanski says you can do it on easy, but I can't do it or else I'd get about 2 hours of sleep. :-/

Toy Story is being cut because it's actually really difficult and the claw boss is a run killer. So uh, I guess it's not 72 games anymore. I'll update the google spreadsheet soon.

How hard is blood lines exactly on easy? I mean... If i'm having to practice retro vanias anyway...

I mean, I'll try and see how comfortable I feel with it. I watched that video a few times ya know?

But damn that is REALLY REALLY sad. If you want to keep it 72 games, you could just add Double Dragon in front of DD2: revenge (though i can't get my cart anymore). THat would probably be around 15-20 minutes en mass?
I don't even know what the fuck this is
holy FUCK, that's horrible. Poor stanski, man...
You got a deletion wish?

Seconded.  Interestingly, a similar accident happened Sunday night near work WHILE I was at work.  I second pulling Toy Story (DAMMIT STAN!)

Request: Stan and Mike(89) were going to comment on each others' Sonic runs (2 and 3&K).  Since Stan is out, can I comment for all 3?  Also, I could comment for SMW, SMRPG, F-Zero & MZM (since those are vacant).

Stan, I hope you're back up soon, my bowling is slumping.
Talk to the Hand
Goddamn, that's terrible to hear. Hope stanski isn't too badly hurt and that he makes a speedy recovery.

As for Pianotoads, that's disappointing, but mainly in the sense that I don't know that I could play it much better than I did at M6 given exactly one attempt (Particularly as it'll be at about 11:30PM as opposed to the 11AM or so at M6). Maybe if I hit the Boot Scuzz glitch...

i'm just going to wait until after christmas to update the schedule on the marathon page. by then everything should be final, right?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Double Dragon: That's a good idea, is it easy enough to pick up in a week? Maybe I could try it out like I did Altered Beast (it took me about a week or so to learn Altered Beast). Don't worry about the cart, Breakdown says he has it.

Rane: I'm not sure about Bloodlines, I'm just going off of what stanski said. You can talk to stanski about running it, I'm sure he won't mind if you contact him over AIM.

MatrixTN: MatrixTN, I'd rather keep those slots open because we have guest commentators (screwattack and pbc) who have offered to do commentary, but aren't in the schedule yet.. If the pbc productions crew has time free around the Sega slot, we'll definitely have them do some guest commentary. Also, Kareshi is doing Metroid Zero Mission.

Arkarian: Yes, everything on the schedule should be final then. At most, we might have a few guest commentators to add, but no games should be changed at that point.

About stanski: He was okay enough to talk to me on AIM, so I guess that's something.
bläää
Oh, sounds like bad luck Stanski. Hope the leg is not to bad, at least you can still run the sonic games  Roll Eyes

... Sad

My activity have not been good recently on the site but I got some time for practicing my titles before MAGfest and I really had to memorize a lots of the games again. Some titles have been really troublesome and I hope I will get some more practice for SMB3 no flute, M:ZM... Otherwise I am doing OK I guess.

I am not doing good on Metroid Zero Mission though. I haven´t played that game for over a year I think Tongue
I had bad luck buying a GBA player at Ebay but I never got it. And now Its way to late to buy one for me. But is someone can get a GBA player for MAGfest I will probably make it with a few hours of practice. Well, I can practice some on My GBA before showing up at least. but if someone could bring an SP to GC cable in case that mine doesn´t work it would be good too Tongue I can definatley not play with anything else then a GBA SP (I´ll bring my own)

Anyways. I am not out in time but I would like people to bring as many games in my marathon list as possible. I don´t remember which game Mike has but if you like to bring a cartridge it would be good. I want to bring as few games as possible because I will do some backpacking before going back to Europe (I will go to New York)

Here is the list of games that I need for the Marathon

NES:
Chip n dales rescue rangers
Contra
Duck Tales
Kung Fu
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario Bros 3
Super C
TMNT II

SNES
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
The Lion King
Haters gonna hate
That sucks about stanski.  Here's to hoping for a speedy recovery, at least you don't have to mobile to play online poker. Smiley

Bummer about DJ Mike Haggar too, I know I was looking forward to the Battletoads race.

But as they say in theater, the show must go on.

As for filling the hole in the games list, DD 1 does seem like the most logical choice to replace Toy Story.  Toy Story always struck me as a kind of random game for this thing to be honest (though stanski being good at it was plenty reason enough to keep it in) and having DD1 definitely helps to make DD 2 seem less random.  Like mike said, I have the cart so if someone who doesn't own it wants to pick it up and practice on emulator I can definitely bring it.  The person picking it up is definitely not going to be me though.  I like the game well enough, but have too much on plate right now to start from speedrunning scratch this close to the event.

If no one ends up doing Bloodlines, however, I would be willing to offer to do Strider as an alternative.  It's a game I've been playing when I don't want to play my marathon games so I'm at least sort of in shape for it already (procrastination saves the day?), and it could offer a little help in breaking up mike89's monster block (stick it between the Sonic and Vectorman games).  The games aren't at all comparable in length (I'd ballpark the estimate at 15 minutes, it has a long ending), but it would keep the count where it is.  My only real concern is there's a whole lot of random and crazy tight precision to contend with (I doubt most people who've watched it appreciate how lucky my youtube run is), a lot of which I can't really mitigate with safer strategies.  It's definitely not a game I can guarantee a one life clear of, and burning through a credit is a very real possibility.

@ frezy:  I own and can bring the following:

Duck Tales
Mega Man 3
Metroid
SMB3
SMK

I also have a GBA player, but I think I remember mike saying he has one too, and I'd rather not lug that down if I can avoid it.

Just a general word of advice to people that occurred to me today:  people playing might want to bring their own controllers.  I took a run through Jackal the other day using a different controller than the one I had been and noticed a pretty stark difference in how things handled with it.  Having a d-pad and buttons that you're used to is probably a good idea.

We're just over a week away, I can hardly believe it.
Sea of Green
Oh my gosh, how awful! Hope your leg heals quickly, Stanski. Sad

I'll bring a Gameboy Player for you then. Already have it attached to one of the Gamecubes, so I'll just bring the whole darn thing. Smiley

That I don't have. Are you sure the Hori pad won't do in a pinch? I'll bring that anyway to be safe.

I'll bring Contra, Mega Man 3, Metroid, Super Mario Brothers 3, Mega Man X, and Mega Man X2 then. Mike has my copy of Mega Man 2, so maybe he'll bring that too. Tongue

[Edit]: Nitrodon reminded me earlier that I need someone to bring Aladdin. Andrewg and/or Rane, yes?

Seconded! I found this out at GameUniCon. Thankfully it was just me goofing around with Battletoads as opposed to any sort of official event, but I'll definitely be bringing my own controller to the event. Maybe give it a good taking-apart-and-cleaning beforehand too.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Actually, to emphasize something Breakdown reminded me of, bring any games you're running to MAGFest! It's okay to have too many copies of one game, but it's not a good thing if we don't have any copies.

I requested some games from the MAGFest staff a couple of weeks ago (Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales being among them), but they never responded to my email. Sad

Frezy_Man: You don't have to worry about the Game Boy player, I have one. I also have a GBA-GC controller converter  (for Pac-Man vs. the best Pac-Man game ever) lying around somewhere, I just need to find it. If worse comes to worse, we can probably find one at gamestop. And yes, I have an SP. If you don't want to play Zero Mission because you're rusty, I can cut it from the list. You're already running every single game in our marathon. Wink

List of games I have:

Contra
Super C (need to test if this works, but it should)
Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
TMNT II
Super Mario Kart

BTW, did you get my PM about buses to New York?

Molotov: Yeah, I can bring Mega Man 2 over. Tongue If you read above, then you'll see that you don't need to bring your gb player

Breakdown: Like I said above (twice already, hehe), I have a gb player. I let Toy Story in not only because Stanski is very good at it, but it also fits in with all of the Disney games we're doing at the marathon. However, Strider is a great alternative to Toy Story or Bloodlines.

I think the only games we need now are Lion King and Kung Fu. Estarland (it's about a 20-25 minute drive from where I live) has Kung Fu, I'll call them about picking it up tomorrow.
Talk to the Hand
So Mike, I hear you need GB a player. I might be able to scrounge one up.

Wink

More seriously, I'll be bringing all the games I'm running, although that doesn't really help the Kung Fu situation much (Since, you know, I'll be using my copy.). How're we on systems? I have a top-loader NES I can bring, depending on what's needed/how we plan to record.
