There's been a little activity in this game just recently and I've seen a couple new players pick up the game. There's a brand new leaderboard for the game that desperately needs submissions so if anyone wants to submit a PB for either version, feel free to do so. It's currently divided into two separate categories for the English and Japanese versions but considering the known time difference, that may change at some point.
Hey all! I've recently picked this game up and started learning it. I was having tons of trouble learning the text skip trick with the pause buffering, so I did some digging on an emulator and figured it out. I made a highlight of it here:
Long story short, when you pause the game when Nemo is landing, you have to do it on the correct frame or else the input buffering won't work. I'm sure this is something that was known before, but I haven't found any discussion of it anywhere.
Anyone else have any insight into this? Am I making it too complicated somehow?
I considered making a tutorial a while back but no one else has been particularly serious about running this game for quite some time so I didn't really bother.
I have nothing to add except that I'm glad someone else is diligently pursuing this game. It's been a long time. Best of luck. I'm rooting for you.
Edit: OK I do have something to add. As long as you land in a crouch and pause it while crouching/holding down, it doesn't really matter which frame you pause on. As long as you're crouched while pausing, you can in theory take all the time you need. Most of the time when I've seen someone failing the text skip, it's because they're trying to pause either while they're still in the air (pausing too early) or they didn't land in a crouching position.
Yes. It's not really pressing start that delays/cancels the text from appearing. That's a common misconception. For whatever reason, it's that it won't trigger unless Nemo is in a standing position. The pause is so that your first input after unpausing is to jump, thus, avoiding the text (since your first input would occur within the first 3 frames or whatever you determined it was).
Here's how it was done in the old days back in 2013: You'd basically reset until you finally got the Flip skip and then if you somehow managed to get Flower Garden or Night Sea, it was more or less an unexpected bonus. Cloud Ruins was considered to be more or less humanly impossible and even after the pause strat became a thing, it was thought that using the pause strat in that stage would be slower. However, it's several seconds faster.
