I make one cool Lemmings MAX-% test run:

I got 100% Taxing level 6 Compression method 1:
1.19 time remain
http://img397.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p4130035jj2.jpg

I already think it was totally impossible avoid blocker. I planned whole 2 hours and i finally find this crazy plan bash through the metal and avoid using blocker. There is only one digger. This make that very hard. It is virtually impossible bash through metal if you try stuck lemmings without blocker. But after 2 hours plan i find nice way how i can bash high enought and stuck and turn every lemmings without blocker.

Lemmings would actually be a good game to speedrun if the "Speed Up"-function wouldn't speed up to the PC's maximum, but by a fixed percentage.
Theoretically, you could finish all the levels extremely fast if you had a program which changed your PC's performance according to your needs in the level, so you could run the game at 500% speed at one point and later change to 20000% speed, for example. That would be both hard to realize and illegal on SDA though.
On the other hand, a run through all the levels without "Speed Up" would be extremely boring.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
First I want to tell MASTER-88 that even though nobody else is posting much, some people like me are interested in your progress and check up on this thread. Smiley

I keep on idly mentioning Lemmings run talk (I want to organize it later, but of course other SDA things get in the way). I didn't know fast forward was just unthrottled. Are you sure it works that way in the Windows version (the one we would probably use for collaboration purposes) or just the DOS version?

Of course, we could just use the built-in timer instead. Wink At any rate, we had some discussion about whether or not to use game time or real time. Game time would be way easier to track, but real time would probably be more interesting since you would try to 1) use fast forward as much as possible, and 2) use pause as little as possible.

If fast forward depends on machine spec, I guess real time is the only choice.
Everything's better with Magitek
I also check up on this thread, but I usually don't have anything to say, so I don't post.

I would be interested in doing some speedruns for this game, but I don't currently have a copy of the game.  I think my dad has a Windows version, so I could probably borrow that from him if that's the version we'll go with.

I'd prefer to go by real time than by game time.  I think it would take more skill, and it would look more like a speedrun as well. Wink  I don't know how that would work with the fast forward option, though; in fact, I don't remember there being any fast forward function at all in the versions I've played.  Would it be possible to do real time but with no fast forward, or would that just be too boring?
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
It would probably depend on what most people think, but I imagine most runners would want to use fast forward, since it would make running a lot less painful.

I don't know what I was thinking earlier when I said fast forward in the DOS version. The DOS version has no fast forward obviously. So if the Windows version is machine spec dependent, I guess we'll have to go with game time.

We could also see what people think about the idea of not using pause at all, but at this point it seems most likely that we will do:

- game time
- fast forward allowed (although it won't actually affect anything due to using game time)
- pause allowed (stops the timer obviously)

I could handle that.  I'm not sure that pausing would be helpful on every level, anyway--or at least that some levels could be done without it.  (On my Lemmings Youtube videos, I completed every level except one or two without pausing, so I know it can be done; but some would definitely be faster with pausing.)
You got a deletion wish?

Seconded, though on the Genesis version there is no FF button.  Am I correct in assuming that SNES/PC would be the same category since all levels are the same?  Genesis would be separate from that considering that some are different, plus the additional ratings.

Yep. For me, even a 7 minute level finishes almost immediately whenever I hit the button Wink

LOL, I just tried this myself and that happens too. I wonder if this means we could use real time since the difference would be negligible, but probably not. One second is still important. Although this does mean something strange. The way you would play most levels for game time, is to wait around and hit Esc as soon as you have the last lemming you need. If you have a blocker out there, and hit fast forward, the level will just time out (and you will win with 0:00 game time).

So fast forward would be a lot more useful for real time. For game time, it might even be unusable (unless you just toggle it on for a split second), which would suck. This is all so confusing. I guess we'll deal with it later, heh.

MatrixTN, the timing is different for SNES and PC, so they would be different versions. The timing was different for DOS and Mac and Amiga even. I remember Mac players had a much easier time on certain levels such as Just a Minute. Of course, the DOS is even different from the Windows. All of this is close enough for regular play, but you can't compare the game times between versions. It's not equitable.

Well its not that easy. If you're a fast button masher, you could also use it inbetween the level in situations where you arent doing something for 30 or so seconds. This allone would give a big advantage over someone who just uses it at the end of the level.
Or imagine someone has a crappy computer or someone sets up a CPU-killer program. This would then give him a huge advantage, because although the end would be a bit slower, he could use the FF in much more different situations.

Finally, as I mentioned in my post on the first page, you could theoretically set up a program to speed down your computer so that the FF always perfectly fits your needs, and - again, theoretically - beat every level in less then 5 seconds.

So, in conclusion, the idea of using FF in a speedrun is kind of killed, at least if youre aiming for a fair competition. On the other hand, a run without FF would be quite boring to watch as well as much easier to execute.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Yeah, this is really confusing. Well I guess we would have to use game time after all.
Master-88
I see peoples are still interesting with this. Smiley

I don,t never trying real time runs. I always check some speedroutes using in game time. I make some speedruns using fastest possible routes:

Mayhem 18 MIN-%. 7.14 time remain.
There is 9 minutes time. I can beat that under 2 minutes. You really need pause buttons here. Because there is 4 entrance.

Currently now i have interesting find MAX-% methods. In prevous page i post Taxing 6 100% and Tricky 25 98%. Nobody belive that already. But yeah both hard plans working.

I just visited lemmings forum too. There is way get 98% in Mayhem 29 save me level. This method working DOS version only.

There is much more intersting method too. Most methods working only using DOS version. Some methods can working on SNES version too.

I think 100% Mayhem 1 steel work can working Snes version too. I got 99% already, i think it was MAX. Probably it is my next big operation got cool 100% in this level. This might be hard. Even 99% took me while.

I would go for real-time but with FF forbidden. It wouldnt really be a speedrun if you paused all the time, I think.
