So I noticed that freeware games are now accepted.  Hmm...

Well, I had been planning an any% speedrun of La-Mulana earlier this year, and now I feel I can finish it.  I'm going to share what I have so far in the hopes that this fine community might help me out.

I had previously planned through segment 20 and gotten about halfway through the game.  However, I'm currently redoing the route to be less bad.

A few notes about route.  A lot of the difficulty is planning how to get coins and weights in order to buy items and solve puzzles.  The contents of pots only respawn when the game is reset.  This means that many of the early segments, and possibly some of the later ones too, will begin with a trip through Guidance Gate to the lucrative pots at D-1, E-2, B-4, B-5, and B-6.  Shurikens and flares may also become an issue, since some bosses require a lot of them.

The Boots should be collected as quickly as possible, since they make Lameza move much faster.  Also, getting some of the Life Jewels is a good idea since it's hard to avoid taking massive damage in some places.

If any of these items are unnecessary, or if I missed some necessary ones, please let me know.  I'll probably figure it out in playtesting anyway.
Thread title:
Good luck with the run. Do you think you can top this one?

There's a word for that
I've watched up to the 5th segment, the planning is excellent but the execution is less so, although it has improved as the run has gone on. Based on those mistakes and potential route improvements I'd guess a more optimised run would be closer to the 2hr mark. Waiting to battle some of the guardians until later is a good idea, the flare gun really makes short work of them. He also gets a couple of ROMs, probably the ones you want to get (increased invincibility period I think)? There's another one that powers up the whip (Mahjong Wizard + something) but I can't remember how out-of-the-way those are.
Capital.

Wow, is that single-segment?  It's hard to tell because of how it is edited, but based on the number of serious mistakes I would guess so.

After watching that, I believe the final time for a segmented run could be less than 2 hours.  I don't think any extra ROMs other than the Antarctic Adventure + Comic Bakery combo are useful.  It might be useful, though, to get the Mace like that run does to kill Mother much quicker.  Also, I wasn't aware that you could skip the Waterproof and Heatproof Cases, which is extremely useful because those cost a lot of coins.

He clearly saves and loads at least once per part. Time could also be saved by picking up fewer life gems, he only needed about 2/3 the health he ended up with.

I updated the first post with an addition to the item list (MSX2, which I completely forgot about) and some deletions (Waterproof and Heatproof Cases).  So the coin total is now 920.  I also put my plan for the first three segments.  After the next three segments (segment 6), I expect to have the Boots via draining the water at the bottom of Spring in the Sky.
Just liked World of Goo and Gave Story, this should go in the Wii section, 'cause it's being converted to WiiWare.
There's a word for that
I don't think so, since he's running the PC freeware version.
Capital.
Yes, I'm running the freeware game w/ english translation.  The WiiWare version would probably be a separate category, since some puzzles and stuff has been changed.  See here.

I added segments 4-7 to the first post.  At this point, I have the Boots and 3 Ankh Jewels from Guidance Gate, Temple of the Sun, and Spring in the Sky, and have also unlocked Bahamut.
Wait, did I spell that Gave Story?
There's a word for that
There's also a "Modify" button if you look closely.

Nice progress! Seems pretty streamlined so far just running off memory, like getting the Grail in segment 1 = no backtracking, and getting the Boots early for obvious reasons.

So I realized it's actually a really good idea to get the Athletic Land + Cabbage Patch Kids ROM combo (longer invincibility period).  Both of them are directly on the path and would take no time at all to get.  Plus, they would help with some boss fights (Viy, anyone?).  So segments 3 and 7 have been modified accordingly.

I also added segments 8 and 9, and appended the Chamber of Extinction dark area to segment 7.  It will make segment 7 a pain in the ass, but the route takes me right by there anyway so it's a good opportunity.

Right, real quick question. What qualifies as the end for this run? Beating Mother or whatever her name is, or is Hell Temple part of the equation?...actually, considering the difficulty, I think Hell Temple would be its own category for completion times...though like, I doubt anyone would even bother with that.
There's a word for that
Hell Temple is not mandatory to beat the game, the game ends once Mother has been defeated, even after taking on Hell Temple. I think Hell Temple would be necessary for a 100% run though.

And YbJ: I know where you got that avatar pic from >:O!

...Hell Temple...

Heh, no.  Maybe in a 100% run.

I added segments 10 and 11, which basically center around the Ellmac fight.  Using flares is by far the fastest way to kill him, yet it requires getting extremely close to his feet.  Two hits from his feet = death.  Plus, he moves back and forth and spits fireballs.  Fun times.  Roll Eyes

It's actually not too hard once you learn his pattern, but it still may be beneficial to split the Temple of Moonlight stuff into segment 12.

Double post!

Eventually, I'll replace the segment-by-segment in the first post with the actual spreadsheet that I'm using.  I'll also start uploading some videos soon.  Until then, here's an update:

  • Segment 11:
    • Kill Ellmac and collect Bronze Mirror from Temple of the Sun.
    • End with 70 coins and 2 weights.
  • Segment 12:
    • Collect Axe and Ice Cape from Temple of Moonlight.
    • Read Transfer Monument in Temple of Moonlight.
    • End with 70 coins and 0 weights.
  • Segment 13:
    • Break pots at E-2 (Guidance Gate) and E-4 (Chamber of Extinction).
    • Collect Life Seal from Chamber of Extinction and Grapple Claw from Inferno Cavern.
    • End with 80 coins and 0 weights.
  • Segment 14:
    • Break pots at D-4, D-3, and C-3 (Surface).
    • Get Serpent Staff from Temple of Moonlight and Feather from Surface.
    • Kill Algol at B-3 (Surface).
    • End with 290 coins and 20 weights.

I decided to split the Ellmac segment into 11 and 12.  It costs little-to-no time, since it is just as fast to fall down from the Transfer Monument as it is to climb the long ladder in Ellmac's room to reach the Temple of Moonlight entrance.

Segments 13 and 14 are devoted to completing the Feather item sequence and getting the extremely lucrative pots at D-3 (Surface), which contain 200 coins and 20 weights.  Smiley  There is also a pot with 20 bombs, but I don't have bombs yet.  Sad  Anyway, I only need 260 more coins for the rest of the run, and probably only a few more weights (if any).
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
I hope you don't me jumping in, I'm kinda mishmashing some of your ideas with the RTA run that I saw on YT. I'm going to aim for a run in one sitting, it's gonna be tough but I've been making my own little notes to go by.

Maybe we'll end up learning stuff from eachother during this : ) anyhow, looking forward to this and I'll try and keep everyone up to date. Right now I'm just trying to relearn the game to a point where playing it start to finish is possible, speeding it up will come after that.
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
Okay, I've got a route up to Elmac done. I fight him as my second boss, and I am trying for a true single segment run *meaning no save/load abuse for coins or weapon energy*

I don't know yet if there are enough coins in the game to actually do this, as I need about 930 or so, possibly more due to the need to buy weights at least once early on to make progress without using a save load. If anyone has info on the EXACT amount of coins in the game that'd help out immensely.

Another thing would be damage boosting ideas, I use it quite a bit already and might record some vids of testing ideas at some point, but if you guys have any knowledge of major points where damage boost could save a lot of time feel free to post them.

So far this is the fastest route I'm able to come up with without save/load:

Surface/Guidance Gate 1:
#1 Snag coins and weights to the left, go back and open ruins by talking to Xelpud
#2 Enter ruins, grab life crystal and the 10 coin pot then drop down
#3 Go right to grab the weights, head back, drop down to the kill puzzle and solve it
#4 Solve the block puzzle to the right, use weight, then grab the grail
#5 Hit the jewel in the giant's mouth, head up and push the block. Jump on the elevator and use a weight.
#6 Climb up the ladder and get the shurikens
#7 Grab the shuriken pots and head to the Temple of the Sun

Temple of the Sun 1:
#1 Jump down and solve the small puzzle to get the dagger
#2 Grab the dagger and drop down into the pit, quick kill bats while falling if possible *very tricky*
#3 Leap down, grab the coin pot, go right snag the other pot and open the store. Buy weights (20 coins)
#4 Head back left and talk to the person in the door, grab coin. Solve ankh jewel puzzle and grab it
#5 Climb up the ladder and enter the pyramid structure, grab life crystal and coin pot, hit the button and warp

Surface/Guidance Gate 2:
#1 Buy handy scanner
#2 Open quick entrance to the Guidance Gate, grab Athletic Land rom off skeleton
#3 Make way to the destroying objects puzzle, collect two coin pots and one shuriken jar
#4 Solve the objects puzzle, grab the coin pot, drop down and hit the button

Mausoleum of Giants 1:
#1 Grab the coin pot, drop down
#2 Solve the throwing knives puzzle and collect them
#3 Head right and drop down, go to the star/moon/sun puzzle room, collect one pot of throwing knives on the way
#4 Turn all to stars, ride the elevator back up, and place a weight on the pedestal
#5 Head down then right, collect the life up and shuriken pot
#6 Climb the ladder and get the life jewel, drop down and grab throwing knives pot

Twin Labyrinths 1:
#1 Climb down to room 2, grab coin pot
#2 Down one more room, grab coin pot
#3 Down one, then up and grab the 100 coin pot, go down right ladder
#4 Head down left ladder, enter shop and buy the helmet (90 coins), warp to surface

Surface/Guidance Gate 3:
#1 Buy the glyph reader (100 coins) (finally)
#2 Go to the stone warp tablet and activate it
#3 Head towards Spring in the Sky, collect shuriken pot

Spring in the Sky 1:
#1 Grab coin pot to the left
#2 Drop into the water, activate the warp quickly
#3 Head right and then up, grab coin pot, pray the jellyfish doesn't move right and go through the water
#4 Head up on the lift to the miniboss, hug the left side to not activate fish
#5 Go into the miniboss room and defeat him with shurikens
#6 Grab the pots that contain stuff in the next room, grab the seal
#7 Jump onto the lift, break the seal and grab the scalesphere, breathe a sigh of relief
#8 Drop down into the Bahamut room, place weight, hit the water wheel outside
#9 Quick warp to the tablet here, drop down to the right, kill the fish and grab the rom + ankh jewel
#10 Place weight in the next room, head left and destroy the thing blocking the crank
#11 Head up and hit the crank til the water drains, warp to surface

Surface/Guidance Gate 4:
#1 Go back to the Temple of the Sun

Temple of the Sun 2:
#1 Kill the enemies to the left and place a weight on the pedestal
#2 Drop down, hit the fake block in the wall, and turn on the light for the platforms
#3 Push minecart downwards til you come to the room with two birds
#4 Go through the middle of the pyramid, place a weight and go right
#5 Pick up speed boots, enter Chamber of Extinction

Chamber of Extinction 1:
#1 Navigate the dark rooms
#2 Activate the warp, warp to Spring in the Sky

Spring in the Sky 2:
#1 Go towards Bahamut's lair, grab gloves on the way
#2 Fight Bahamut, you are now back on the Surface
#3 Carefully jump and get the next seal
#4 Hit wall and grab the lifeup crystal, warp to Temple of the Sun

Temple of the Sun 3:
#1 Defeat the miniboss, go to Inferno Cavern

Inferno Cavern 1:
#1 Go left and up the first ladder, grab the coin pot
#2 Grab Antarctic Adventure rom
#3 Go the block puzzle room, solve it and collect the flares
#4 Go right and grab any coin/weapon pots on the way
#5 Activate the warp here
#6 Use a throwing knife, pray, jump into the lava and quickly solve the block puzzle, grab claws
#7 Warp to Temple of the Sun

Temple of the Sun 4:
#1 Head to Elmac's lair
#2 Fight Elmac with flares

This is where I stopped at for the moment being, theres a couple things I'm thinking could be revised but I'm not sure as it's difficult to do any of this out of order without running out of weights or not having enough coins.
Capital.
Hey UltraJMan, glad to have you join the party.  Smiley  For some good info on items in pots, see this page.  Although that list is not complete, so not all coins and weights are accounted for.  Also remember that enemies will drop 1 coin or 1 weight occasionally, so there is always a possibility of getting more.  In my route, I need 1040 coins to buy the items (Hand Scanner, Helmet, Lamp of Time, Dragon Bone, and MSX2), ROMs (Game Master and Glyph Reader), and the Ankh Jewel from the Chamber of Birth.  Of course, in a SS you will be skipping the Game Master.

I'm sorry I haven't made much progress in the last month.  I've been swamped with college stuff since I'm graduating this semester.  My route is nearly complete so I'll probably post that soon.
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
Oh man I didn't account for that last ankh jewel. I'm almost positive there's enough money in the game now though, I streamed some casual SS practice and route planning and had around 500 coins at the Confusion Gate. With at least one more 100 coin jar and a few 10 coin pots I should have more then plenty to finish the game.

The only hard part now is keeping my health up via life crystals or level ups. The way I go now has me fighting Elmac and moving on with only a small sliver of life.

I revised my route a little bit since last time as well, I'll have to update my post later with some of the things I do differently. For the most part I follow the RTA without save/load abuse, but occasionally I branch off, I actually grab the gauntlets before the roc's feather as well as some other stuff, I'll see how fast it all truly comes together over the next few months I'm sure, I'm just excited to be nearing the halfway point *which is the easier half of the game for me, after Viy almost nothing up to Mother poses as much of a threat*
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
I officially have a full route planned, now it all comes down to practice, some luck, and my memory not failing me every now and again. I'll modify this post with the full route later today hopefully. It's gonna be a long road to achieve a time I'm satisfied with, but I'm confident it'll be worth it.

Just... make sure you're prepared for Tiamat next time.  You seemed like you had it down (after the dozen or so failures and then few moments of success), but a day can change everything.

It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
Yeah, I'm almost positive I have her down, luck with bats can be an issue but even then I should be okay.

Also, I think I'll hold off on posting my run route until I actually get the run done. If only cause there are a LOT of steps to follow, and it's gonna take quite some time for the write up. However, if anyone's interested I'll post how each run goes, practice or otherwise  Smiley
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
I have a current 2:34:34 run up on ustream, the next stage starting sometime in the next week is most definitely trying to get faster then the RTA time as well as recording that run. I'm waiting to hear back on a quality test, but you can look forward to this run hitting completion within the next couple weeks hopefully!
It's time for some HEErooooOOOOHi cs!
Well, I finally broke the RTA time and figured I would update the thread. The time is 2:27:13 give or take a second or two, and I'm very happy with how it came out, I'll most likely work on improving it in coming months, but for now it's time for a break.
