Mega Marby!
Hi there, I'm Jordan. I'm new here, I've watched over at least 100 of these runs and I love them all.

And after I beat Kirby's Nightmare in Dream land
(Game-boy Advance)

I was thinking about doing a speed run of it possibly,

At first (since I'm extremley new to this) i want to start it slow
Like a quick run through Vegetable Valley (Level 1)
And get that really good and send that in mabey, Unless you want full speed runs. Then after I get the hang of it work on a full run.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever done this, I just didn't see it on the list of runs so I figured I'd give it a shot Smiley

Now I have 2 questions before I start working on this.
I use visualboyadvance and run this game on it
(to clear up any legal issues I actually own the game as well, but broke my Gba X[

Now... So far the only video recorder I usually use is Fraps.
But I'm not sure if it would work with VisboyAdv.

Does anyone know how to capture video of Visboyadv.?
If it's another program I'll look into it, Much help is appreciated Smiley

Given the nature of this game, it's all or none.

If you need any tips, remember that this is a remake of Kirby's Adventure (NES) and pretty much anything and everything related to that will apply to this.

As for your questions,

1) Emulators are NOT allowed.  You don't use a GBA to record, but a Gameboy Player (attachment to the Nintendo Gamecube).  It's not that we think you'll cheat, it's because we can't prove you didn't (as VisualBoyAdvance does have a version that supports rerecording).

2) As for recording the above mentioned, remove the frame and set it to sharp and record on your VCR/DVD Recorder.

Oh, heh, sorry. I didnt' know. :[

Well I don't have the things to record off a television, I guess that's ok, I'll stick to watching the runs.
It's a good game to run, but you're going to have to make some important decisions about what powers to hold onto.  I think Wheel is one of the faster powers in the game, but Fireball should be a good substitute until you can get wheel.  I don't know if you can cancel Tornado, but if you can, it's worth it as you can just go right and then cancel it and use it again for insane movement to the right.  Hi Jump is amazing for vertical levels.  Powers that are strictly offensive are really only useful for boss fights(beam, sword, hammer, laser).  Note that if you absorb certain combos of powers you get a different power out of a mix, and some combos give you a random power(I don't think UFO is possible out of it, but UFO is really slow if you get down to it).

Basically the route planning comes down to figuring out which powers grant the fastest movement(I'll bet it's wheel unless you can pull some shenanagans with Tornado) and then being able to hold onto them until you need to get something more useful for bosses.  Wheel is a pretty useless boss power...  As per specific powers to use against each boss, I know laser really speeds up King Dedede to the point where it's worth it to go out of your way to get laser.  The default high jump is probably fastest against the cloud, and metaknight is a no brainer(forced sword FTW, and by the way he's going to be a big run killer as he's the hardest fight in the game, and you have to beat him fast which is really hard as he's quite evasive).  I don't remember the other bosses well enough to make good judgments on which powers are fastest, but I seem to remember beam being fast against the Whispy Woods, and I remember some power completely tore apart the sun and moon, but I can't remember which one for the life of me...  There's the painter too who I don't remember well at all...

Good luck on this run; this is a tricky game to run due to the insane numbers of options and the fact that I can guarantee that whatever method of movement turns out to be fastest will be really awkward(kirby does not run fast at all; powers are the way to go for sure).  IMO the first place you should start should be figuring out how fast you can go with each power(and obviously finding which are optimal for which types of levels), and then you should  start testing powers aganist bosses to see how long each  kill.  Then strike out powers that turn out to be completely useless(rock will probably be in here).  For the rest, simply figure out which appear in which levels and design a powers route(it's a good thing that at the end you have a guaranteed forced star rod which probably kills him as fast as any power would).  You also have to decide if and when crash and mic are worth it...  Then if certain powers would really help in areas where you can't get them, see if you can arrange a mix.  Luck abuse might come into play with this.  Of course remember nothing is a power to be considered for bosses even though starting with some power and using the star from it for the first hit should always be faster.
Mega Marby!
Well let me state first off that I won't be doing the run because I dont' have the tools to do the recording on television Nor the gameboy player. But I'm still going to make a run on my emulator to show my friends who also like the game Smiley Truly sorry for not reading the rules prior...

Any how...

I know for a fact that if I even made a run it would be horrifically sloppy beacuse I'm extremley new to this and I'm coming into speed running blind and I'm normally just a casual gamer so heh yeah.
But

Honestly after doing some test runs to just see some possible ways to do this I was liking the Burning power, the one that acts like a flaming ball of death that propells you in the direction you want to go (Excluding up and down)
That one got me by pretty fast but I noticed a lot of mistakes while doing that including falling onto enemies and losing my power Sad So I need to work on that , Tire is also good.

Since I just beat the game three times in a row...
Kirby moves faster horizontally (flying) if you let him exhale and inhale constantly...

I think Normal mode can be under 40 minutes, or you could go -for kicks- on extra, in wich the only difference is that your Life energy is 3 units instead of six

I just single sengment cleared the  Metaknight subgame, wich is Hard Mode+ sort of, but since Meta Knight is faster on the ground and Vertically in the air, I'd say speedrunning with him is the most intreging.
My only Issue is that I'm just not yet good enough to beat the Metaknight mode without Dying...(I died at least 5 times just now....maybe even more...)

Here

(I wish I could show you my GBA pic, wich is 41:44 -_-)

Damn, and just when I was thinking someone would do a run of this game so I could submit my Boss Challenge run.

Well, I have the game, I'll need alot more practice If I want to run the main game...but the passion is there, especially since I want to do a Metaknight Run, wich by SDA law is an unlockable extra, and hence first a normal run must be posted...*sigh*

I'm training on the VBA right now, maybe after I'll sleep I'll get some resutls, if there is enough interest

Do it Elpis. Everyone in this thread pretty much wants to see this game run.
I saw a video on YouTube of a glitch that allowed you to use the microphone 255 times. I think you have to use the Mike (mic) power just as you touch a star or something. It was for Kirby's Adventure, so I dunno. My brother "lost" my copy of this game, but I remember completing it 100% in one sitting on more than one occasion.

lol, 255 times... well, I just ran the game, but I died alot, and post-stage bonus jumping didn't go well all the time... I used SPARK alot, even when I should have shifted to WHEEL or something else that would have saved time...anyways, from pressing start on the title to dealing the final blow to the Nightmare King, 59 min and 20 seconds... *goes off to run it again* ^^

Any tips or ideas on what ability where to use are welcome, It's been a long time since I went in-depth into a non-Rockman game, and it's been at least 12 years since I really played Kirby.

New time: 0:58'30 (rough estimate) (4 deaths)

58:30 isn't too bad for a main game run, but still isn't good enough, though I can't remember what my last time was at when I stopped working on it.  I'm sure if you search this forum you'll figure out (I did remember also having 0 deaths).

I'm still training ofcourse, I wouldn't post anything in wich I make too much mistakes, or dying, luckilly I just found my GBA cart for Kirby again, so more training...
But I still make alot of mistakes...I also need to better pre-plan the use of Copy Abilities...

*searches for topic*

100% in 57'57 O_O that's awesome! *Motivation level boosted by 200 points* but...why isn't it on the site yet? I wanna see!! XD seriosuly, if you can get sub58 with 100%, then I should be able to get sub58 with 86%(minimal percentage) right? *goes off to practice*

My one suggestion is to use Ball against King Dedede -- it's a tiny detour, as you can pick it up right at the start of 7-4 before the fight.

Yeah, Ball is quite hard to use against bosses.  The reason for this is the friggin' insane power it has.  Practise with it.  I like to bounce right in front of the boss, and actually hit them on the upward re-bound.  It's actually easier to beat Kind Dedede in the GBA remake, as he has far fewer invincibility frames after damage.

Here's a listing of all the weapon powers and boss HP I tested on this game.  There were a bunch of changes from the original NES version -- I can post those for comparison if you want.

I'd be interested in seeing these.
The only advice I can really offer is to use Tornado (or wheel?) as much as possible since Tornado makes you invincible, and both it and wheel allow for fast horizontal movement.

Problem with Tornado is that you can't break blocks, and Wheel you can't jump.

Sure.  I'll just list damage/HP differences:

Powers (strength from NES version listed):

- the following got weaker in the GBA remake:
Freeze – shield :  6 (-1)
Hammer:  10 (-1)
Ice – breath:  4 (-1)
Parasol – swing:  6 (-1)
Spark:  8 (-1)
Throw:  10/held, 18/star (+2, -6)
Tornado:  6 (-2)
UFO – large:  25 (-7)

- following got stronger in the GBA remake:
Beam:  3 (+1)
Burning:  4 (+1)
Hi-Jump:  8 (+1)
Mike:  10 (+3.33)
Suplex:  10 (+2)
Sword:  5 (+1)
Throw:  10/held, 18/star (+2, -6)
UFO – beam:  3 (+1)

Miniboss
- HP never changes in NES version
- HP from NES version listed, compared to 7-2 GBA
- in GBA, Poppy has 25 or less HP in 1-2, so expect the GBA numbers to vary
Poppy – 30 (+4)
Frosty – 20 (+10)
Wheelie – 25 (+9)
Tick Tock – 25 (+11)
Bonkers - 28 (+??) (oops, forgot to test this guy)
Bugzzy – 30 (+10)
Rolling Turtle – 30 (+10) (changed to Phanphan)
Lion – 28 (+10)

Bosses:
- the only boss that changed HP was the final nightmare wizard -- 60 in NES, 56 in GBA.  Really makes little difference.
- note that the change in Sword's power means that Meta Knight takes 12 hits in NES, but 10 hits in GBA.
