So right now, there is not a single level that is actually difficult to beat. The only level I don't have a satisfactory strat for is 8-2, because it takes a bit long. The level itself is super easy, but my way of getting through it is a bit slow (- safe strats, atm, basically). I'm gonna play this game on emulator for a while, in between my streams, and route out some of the trickier levels.

By the way, my 7-2 strat works 100% consistently. I get through that stage without losing any lives every time.

Now for the most important question, how many deaths?
Totally rad
Way too many. Everything up until the first Stark fight was perfect, but the first Stark fight cost me a lot of continues, because it took me a while to figure out his pattern. I think I had about 3 credits left at the end, after the final Stark fight. I don't think Deathless Toki will happen any time soon (due to Stark's RNG), but I should easily be able to do a run on a single credit.

The ridiculous part of this is that you had 364 viewers. If you got partner off this...

He had even more than that when he GO'd to Stark earlier...
Been playing this a lot over the past few days, figured i'd post some shortcuts/tips. Hoping they'll encourage more people to give the game a try.

7-1 Avoid Enemies
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1845830
-Nothing special here, just the best route to avoid enemies. (except the last jump over the spike, that's silly)

7-2 Phoenix skip
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1847112
-Drop down when the bottom platform goes off screen.
-Also be sure to walk off the moving platform at the place in video.

8-1 Fast
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1845651
-Pretty straightforward.

8-2 Skip
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1847376
-Just jump and shoot and mash up, eventually you'll get through,
My feelings on The Demon Rush
That 8-2 skip is a godly time and stress saver.

Just tried this new skip. I found it much easier and more consistent to spam shoot while spamming jump. I get it almost immediately.

But yeah, awesome stuff Shrimp!
Two more shortcuts to add, executing these ones are a lot tougher.

7-3 Skip
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1849237
-This is probably the hardest skip i've found so far. Not got a perfect method for lining it up yet.
-My best guess is go as far right as possible and jump when the white line on the screen lines up with the tip of the lower pillar.

8-3 Phoenix skip
http://www.twitch.tv/shrimp__/c/1848119
-This one is pretty good because it lets you skip killing two phoenix.
-You jump up to the platform, line yourself up on the far right edge.
-Move camera up so phoenix is visible.
-Jump when the phoenix turns to face left.
-Jump again a split second after landing.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I tried that 7-3 skip my first couple of playthroughs and I could never get it. I thought it was possible but I could never get the positioning. Good to know that it's possible. Not so good to know that it's still very hard. Sad

That 8-3 skip is absurd.
7-4 Quick fight

-This is a pretty good time saver for the 7-4 boss fight which I really sucked at.
The Dork Knight himself.
Looks like you bashed the hell outta that guy.

Yeah, it's much easier this way, this was probably the boss I had most trouble with, so i'm glad there's a fast solution.

9-1 Alternate Exit

-So apparently a level can have more than one exit.
-Crouch just out of reach of the head's flames, then crawl under them and stand up when you can, walking under it.
-Wait for it to get into position shown in in video, then jump on it and land on the pillar.
-Jump on the head again after it rises up to you.
Totally rad
Mad props on finding and documenting everything here, Shrimp.

I have found a few minor things, that I will post in here as soon as I manage to get a proper recording of them.
With all these new routes, a speed run should be able to hit sub 0:55 for sure.

You don't have to go to the right side of the head to do the skip. The left side also works.

The only downside to this is that you have to kill the power up bird before you jump on the head.

LOL WTF at the 9-1 skip.

I <3 that this game is getting serious. Smiley
The Dork Knight himself.
Since it seems some levels have alternate exits, does anyone know how to make a map of the levels with the ROM file?

It's not all of the levels and there's no sprites/enemies/obstacles but at least it's the layout.
LIVE IN THE MOMENT
I got a boxed copy of this for xmas (I used to play the arcade version all the time) so I've been messing around with it over the past month as well.  I noticed in the race that nobody was getting the free bounce shot powerup going into the stage 4 boss.  Here is why you should reconsider:

Using that strategy it's pretty easy to kill that boss faster than the TAS does.  That was actually a pretty mediocre fight -- the three shots that go bouncing off to the right should have been neutrally aimed shots instead of upward so as to hit him in his swoop, and the crappy gamepad I used didn't register my inputs consistently.  So even with bad execution that boss goes down easy to bounce shots, and the next stage is empty so they will decay before they can screw you over again.

As for the 7-3 skip, I got that on my first try on console via blind luck and never got it again so I took a look at it in an emulator with frame advance.  If you are buffering right when the level loads and hold it the whole way, there is only a one-frame window during which the jump off of the platform to the far ledge is possible.  I was actually able to get it pretty consistently once I got a feel for the timing.  I haven't looked into any other setups yet.

Shrimp has already posted video of every other major time-saver I've found and a couple I hadn't.  The only other big thing I found is that the penguins in 6-3 apparently can randomly drop any item in the game, including super shoes.  If you get them from the second penguin you can jump right past those dumb moving platform sections, so keep an eye out.

Awesome, that makes the trick way easier.

5-3 Phoenix skip

-Took me a while to get this one but this way seems to work pretty much 100% of the time.
-Jumping through the fire lizards breath can be pretty risky, you gotta jump again as soon as you land in it.
-For skipping the phoenix it's probably best to just try and copy the video, kinda hard to explain it.
-You don't need to jump on the fireball, it just helps cause it guarantees it won't swing back round and hit you later.
-The jump @ 00:29 isn't needed and sometimes can make you hit the phoenix.
-You really gotta watch out for the ghost when doing this, he can come out of the wall or from above.

I find that the game gives you a lot more leeway if you jump through the fire as close to the lizard as possible.  So for the catapult jump at 0:44, if you position yourself to go past the ledge as closely as possible you will zoom right through the flame if the lizard is facing your way, and then you can just bounce over him.

Here's another small one, you can skip the bouncing bananas in 4-3 by boosting off of the flying manta rays:
Normally I glance up to get the timing and catch them coming the other way but for some reason the top one wasn't spawning so I just recorded this because I'm lazy.  You can also boost up there off of the bouncing banana himself but it's super risky.

4-2 Bug

-Not exactly sure what's going on here, just seem to clip upwards and die, figured i'd post it anyway. Would this count as a zip?

7-1 Wall Jump

-I really don't think this trick is reliable enough to be viable.
-First of all you have to get up here quickly so the boots don't run out.
-Secondly you have to rely on the bull guy flying to the right and through the pillar.
-Thirdly you can't jump too high offscreen or you die.
LIVE IN THE MOMENT
Mike got a sneaker drop from the first penguin in 6-3 during his attempts today which isn't all that useful.  Here is what you can do if you get a random sneaker drop from the second penguin:
(note: youtube can't handle the star's flicker effect which is why toki vanishes)

The timing is tight so you have to hustle.  The jump at 00:10 gets the platform above you to start moving.  When it's at the bottom of its range the shoes barely take you high enough for the game to snap you up onto it, so timing the second jump correctly is a must.  If you do it right you should have enough time left on the invulnerability powerup to take care of the flying bullshit factory waiting for you up there pretty easily.
