Ok, I know not a lot of people have time, but neither do I so it will be hard to try and do a solo job on the promo vid. It also wouldn't be as good as if other people pitched in somehow. So here's the basic idea: we start with some "disaster clips", maybe like Zeal's tidal wave in CT (thanks Breakdown) or Kagnazzo's wave attack in FF4 (thanks Uyama) and mention how Japan got hit hard and needs help. Then we can do some clips of rising up/victory/etc. and say we're helping them get back on their feet. Then we just go through all the cool speed tricks as usual and mention the marathon specifically. What I need from you guys when you have time over the next couple of days is to find any clips that come to mind for you that fit into these themes.

So if you can:
-5 second clips to fit into any of the sections, and specify which section.
-Brainstorm the background song to use

Like Breakdown says, it should only be like 90 seconds tops. And yes, for those who were worried, MSF a.k.a. Doctors Without Borders will mentioned in the video.

(NOTE: the original post was made when Uyama and I were way too tired and it was a bad idea)

I'll just say that since we know the charity is Doctors Without Borders, we should at least put that into the theme of the video.

What tjp said, and also it may be worth using the international name of the organisation as well as DWB, as in most countries (including some English speaking ones like the UK) they go by Medécins Sans Frontières, so it'd be better recognised by viewers in other areas.

I'll do my best to find something that looks fast >_> <_<
Haters gonna hate
2 very important things that need addressed (and conveniently enough go hand in hand) are length and the background track, both of which should really be nailed down before people get turned loose on a google spreadsheet.  Given the time frame I'm thinking shorter than the AGDQ vid, maybe like 90 seconds.  Don't have an idea at present for the track, but think we're looking for something that starts off somber and gets upbeat 30 or so seconds in, preferably, but not necessarily, game related.  I'll think on it while at work today, but if anybody's got ideas, voice them.

For people suggesting clips, I've found 5 seconds is pretty much the magic number for one of these things.  You can jigsaw in a couple 4 or 6 second clips, but 5 seems about perfect for readability of the caption.
Quits halfway
I didn't read the rules, but would something like this work?

Also, while editing that, I noticed that I got hit before I even started the special. I wasn't even aware that was possible, definitely quite the lucky shot.

Yea so Uyama and I were waaaaaaaaay too tired and not thinking straight when I made that post before bed. Pretend all that spreadsheet nonsense wasn't there. Obviously song is important, and I was brainstorming that already as well. Don't worry, I'd add MSF a.k.a. Doctors without Borders into the text stuff. Otherwise, just suggest clips of 5 seconds like Breakdown said. Breakdown is definitely The Man when it comes to our promo vids, but it's a shame we have to do this hastily and not when he has free time really. Gotta make due, though.

I'm getting mental images of Dr. Mario smashing through walls... Shocked (to get to those in need)

As far as "disaster" clips, instead of Zeal's tidal wave, maybe Lavos' Grand Stone that wiped the floor with Essentia (maybe signifying the earthquake)?  And then in the rising up section, you can have the killing blow on Lavos.  Just an idea.
The Speedrunning Teacher
In terms of music, if there isn't a song that naturally gets upbeat, we can always mix one. I'm thinking some sort of Final Fantasy music may be good...

Anybody else concerned that starting the promo vid with "disaster clips" might be found distasteful by our potential viewers, despite the rest of the video focusing on how we intend to help?

I personally don't have a problem with it.  Just a thought.

Well, considering how some people have reacted, you might be right.  On the other hand, it's difficult to talk about a disaster without, well, talking about the disaster.  I guess the better question is, can we do it tastefully?
Having a somber beginning is definitely fine, but having like, Leviathan doing "Tsunami" while "Rock you Like a Hurricane" plays in the background would PROBABLY be a bit much.

I was thinking the same thing, Flip.

I know theres a clip from the beginning of Golden Sun: The Lost Age which has a "Tidal Wave" rolling in.  Just showing this clip (or something similar) while having text about the disaster might look a little better than an rpg team getting devastated by a tsunami move or whatever. I should add that you don't have to include the bit where the tidal wave hits Felix &co. to keep it emotionally minimal.

Again, just thinking aloud here.

I may have enough time that I can put together the video (gotta see what video editing programs I have on my laptop), so I'll see what I can do.

As for 'disaster' scenes, what if instead of actual gameplay we use cutscenes (like the one Flip mentioned)? Ones where we don't see people getting hit by it?

EDIT: Just listened to Tales of Vesperia's Ring a Bell fan-made remix. It may be a good choice for the second half of the music.

Since you didn't provide a link, do you mean this song?

If so, yeah, I can see it for the upbeat portion.

I was about to put a link, but you beat me to it.

For the opening, maybe Spirit of the Night from Secret of Mana?

Yea, I know the whole "disaster clip" thing is going a bit on the edge, but it's hard to do a promo for something like this if you don't acknowledge the crisis, and that's all I was intending. It would probably only be one clip, and then we can go straight into showing other stuff as we go on about how they need our help. The Golden Sun idea might work, but do we even have footage of that readily available?

Alternatively, we could just have the text briefly mentioning the crisis as the video goes from black and transitions into other clips if we really want to make sure we have no issue with that.

I'm at school so I can't really check anything audio ideas at the moment, but I'll make sure to check it out first thing when I get home. If you guys can think of any video clips at all so I don't have to go hunting blindly when I'm back home, that'd be awesome. I don't mean for the "disaster" part, but everything else.
1-Up!
This is what I was thinking of, but it's not as good as i remember

tidal wave is around 7:45. You could use a freeze frame of the wave or a short clip of Sheba saying "I think the earthquake caused it."

Or do something totally different.  Not going to hurt my feelings. If you want to use that video there are Firefox add-ons you can install to allow you to download YT videos.
Waiting hurts my soul...
There's a 'tidal wave'-like scene in FFX. Maybe it'd be more tasteful to show the devastation rather than the disaster because no matter what clip we pick, it's going to pale in comparison to the real thing, and it's in making that comparison where we'll lose people.

Other ideas are a red alert alarm, or some sort of crisis alert, possibly followed by a 'call-to-arms' type clip. Also, past videos stuck with clips from the games that will be featured, so should that style be kept up?

Well jeez, if I saw this topic earlier, I would have thrown my hat into the ring much sooner...  While I am just about ready to post the 2nd draft of the highlight reel, I would be happy to also help out making a promo video for the upcoming marathon.

Are you sure we should we using Flooding videos?  I mean, it is a good idea creatively, but if they aren't going to be seen in the marathon, it could be misleading...  All the same, I could also suggested the opening to Kingdom hearts that could also be used...  As for music, it has to be an instrumental, and while I hate to say kingdom hearts again, they have had some good pieces that could work here, or FFX...

Either way, just like the highlight reel, Just tell me what clips to use with what music and I can see for having it ready by friday.

MAS I love you.

Zenic's idea is pretty good, and I don't think we necessarily need to have only games in the marathon in the first 2 parts. I'm having trouble thinking of "call to arms" type clips from the marathon games, but I suppose we can just use anything where there's some sort of heroic action portrayed. Definitely think we should ditch the wave idea at this point, because Zenic hit the point: any comparisons to the actual tragedy whatsoever is where it starts to be borderline.

I agree, MAS is the MASter of videos. Tongue Plus, I thought I had video editing software installed, but it turns out I don't. So, I'll help with finding music and clips to use.

I like the red alert/crisis alarm idea.  I'm sure that unless the runner objects to it, we could use clips from runs that are on the site as source material, along with cutscenes and the like.

One scene that comes to my mind is the final battle at the end of Final Fantasy IV, where everyone encourages Cecil's party and heals them up for the fight.
Another one I can think of is a cutscene from Skies of Arcadia Legends where all of the Blue Rogues and Black Pirates gather at Vyse's base.
Maybe even a scene from a Sonic game where Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/Shadow go Super? Sonic Adventure, maybe?
The scene where X breaks free from Vile's paralysis (I wanna say it's X1...).
And another: the movie 'At the Entrance to Subspace' in Smash Bros Brawl. Or even part of 'The Great Invasion.'

I'll think of more, just give me a little time. Tongue
