If you could play any game for the first time ever again...

This is a question from /r/AskReddit that I figured would make an interesting thread here. If you could experience any video game as if you were playing it for the first time ever, which one would it be?

For me, it's probably Super Mario World. That game was a big part of my childhood, and I always felt a sense of wonder when I unlocked a new level for the first time. Sure, there are lots of ROM hacks out there, but it just doesn't beat playing the original game.

Honorable mention: Doom. One of my friends showed me the shareware version in the summer of 1999, and it was what really got me into first-person shooters. I remember taking several minutes to find out how to open the doors in E1M1. Ah, memories...

Final Fantasy 6 for sure. That game along with Link to the Past and Super Mario World were pretty much my childhood.

Super Mario Bros 3. SMB 3 surpassed everything on the NES, most important to me were its length and diversity. The one thing that always bothered me with NES games, and I still feel that way, is that they were way too short and way too easy. I beat most nes games as a kid in a single day, often in a few tries or even the first try. I felt pressured to beat them right away as I had to give them back to the other kids I borrowed them from. What bothered me with NES games was that there were often just only a handful of stages. I was always thinking, "why aren't there more stages?". Super Mario Bros 3 had these 8 worlds and had a lot more gameplay elements than any other game before. SMB 3 was also extremely hyped. The commercial was really hyping it up.

GREAT QUESTION!! But, that is tough... I'm going to sneak in a few from my key major console eras.

NES - Mega Man 2 (I could hum the tune to every stage as a 6 years old, to the amazement of my older cousins.)
GEN - Shining Force (first tactics RPG, and what a fun story; years later, I did the Solo-Max run successfully... relived the brief feeling of accomplishment.)
SNES - Super Mario World (all new graphics, and WHAT?! look at all the controller buttons compared to the regular NES~!!)
N64 - Super Mario 64 (that transition to the new controller and then glorious free 3D movement... amazing...)

Probably something cliché like Zelda OoT or Mario 64, but in recent years I would have to say GTA V. The hype that lead up to it and then finally playing it was so great.

I think the absolute top game for me would be SOTN. I was somewhat spoiled by a lot of it on account of having a room mate playing it at the same time.
Super Metroid, just because I'd love to be able to try and search for everything withough knowing where they are.

F*ckin' sanity effects...

It lines up pretty well with my favorite games. I think I'd choose Banjo-Kazooie in the end, but Portal and Eternal Darkness and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Donkey Kong Country 2 would all be amazing to play through for the first time again!

To experience it with fresh eyes again? I'll go with Mass Effect 2. Honorable mentions: any of the main Genesis Sonic games, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, SM64, GTA 3, the first Mass Effect and both KotOR games.

To redo my initial experience as a more experienced gamer, I'd probably go with Castlevania. You can probably guess why...

And on the opposite side of things, FFXIII. My initial experience was that it was fun enough to play, but the story and characters made me quit before I even beat the game. When I returned to it later, I skipped all the cutscenes, dodged fights I didn't want to do, and actually found the game enjoyable.

NO idea how I missed mentioning those two. SotN gave me HOPE for 2D again, and I remember having a demo disc of upcoming PS games that had a video for it and thought, even then, "that game looks awesome; it better not suck." (the disc had a playable demo of Ridge Racer and Parapa the Rapper if I remember right). Smetroid was the first game I ever tried to speed run back in 1997. I woke up early on a Saturday and said, "I wonder if I could beat Super Metroid before noon." And it became a weekly event.

I have actually not played it yet, but I have played the GBA remake and seen how the game plays on NES, and I wish I played this as my first one ever.

SNES : Super metroid
A perferct game.

N64 : SM64 (SP) / SSB (MP)
Chunks of endless fun.

GBA : Yoshi's Island
Yoshi's voice is so adorable.

My all-time favourite.

I would say Dead Space (the first one) on PC. I remember the first time I played this game, it was just insane!!

Of course, you need to play it in the dark, with a good sound system (or headset) and with high volume to be totally freaked Smiley

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by far. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful game to have graced the earth, both in casual play and in speedrunning, it is arguably the greatest game of all time (again, both in casual and speedrunning) and was of huge significance to my childhood.

My second answer would probably be Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Though it is not my favorite installment of the series, it was a huge part of my middle school years and is what introduced me to a series I find my self so passionate with today. I remember the good ol' days, at my friends house, we would do nothing but play Brawl all day. My main was Toon Link, while his was Link and we would duke it out for hours on whatever stage or game mode we felt like. Simpler times, when only the c-stick and b button existed.

That's kinda tough... Most of my favs are the types of games that you need to practice and replay to get everything out of.

Skyward Sword would be really fun to explore again, and it'd be nice to play through Wind Waker entirely instead of loosing the GC game right after I got half the Triumph Forks and coming back for WWHD.
