Steam is my answer, hoo-hah.

But still, I'm not going to do a finalized recording just yet.... I'm still practicing the game. I have plenty new tricks to try out and such, like my new explosion hop technique that I'm thinking about. Inspired by the mighty efforts of the Quake SDA promo video of course.

On that note, damn you Radix :). Everytime someone is mentioning something about PC games, their favorite fastest runs and how amazingly fast they are, and almost anything else, You, Mandel, Stubgaard or whomever else comes in and links us to a Quake .avi, effectively rocking our faces completely off.

EDIT: Say, who'd be interested in a Half-Life promo video?

42 minutes on a practice run, one sitting, including level loads?  I can't really wrap my head around that.  I suppose I'll have to watch it when it's done.

Oh and a few of the shortcuts you've found I've already listed as potential improvements:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/HalfLife.html

Maybe there's a few more in there that you haven't gotten to yet.

I left out a lot because I couldn't do them reliably in the length of segments I was recording.  And I'm sort of confused because you mention being able to get a trick 1 in 20 or 1 in 10 times... do you leave those tricks out of the single segment run or did you simply get much much better at doing them reliably?  For a single-segment run you really can't take too many tricks that are below a 90+% success rate.  If you watch Spider-Waffle's Hazard Course run, then his SS HL run, you can tell he's being a ton more cautious.

How about if it was done on Easy mode?  Wink I think I might have timed it about 10-20 seconds cheap honestly, but not too much like, "hey, I'm gonna remove 2 minutes off my time because I feel like it!" kinda timing  Smiley Besides, on easy mode, the health was a lot more plentiful, so grenade/mortor jumps by the same token were more plentiful, so it was decently cheap.

For the tricks I've only been able to do once in a blue moon, I've saved at those select areas and practiced them over... and over.... and over.... it was actually sickening. I'm actually taking notes and memorizing the precise areas and things I do to do said tricks.

It's true about the single segment run, I can't afford to be too risky. But the thing with me, is that I want to do everything perfectly, no matter how many attempts it takes me. Sure it's mind numbing, but it's decent practice. Like the test chamber jump (which I'm trying to revise), I did it about... I'd say 7 times over before I got it to where I wanted it to be. I have a saved game at every single level so I can practice each of them over and over again. I dunno, I'm a freak.

I've read over the possible improvements in your comments, they're pretty good. I just read them over again and noticed I've been sorta repeating you... heh heh. I'm trying to locate a bunch of other things that can knock off seconds, but we'll see.

And in closing, might I say your run kicked total ass Engy. That is all.

Well if you're looking to best Spider-Waffle's time you should do it on Hard mode.  Or else you'll just get your own category.  It's fewer explosive jumps but hey.

I guess I just don't have the aptitude for single segment runs.  I had to practice trouble spots a lot even with 21 segments.  And I could always fiddle with the segments so that a hard trick appeared at the beginning of one.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching your undoubtedly crazy run.  To me finishing HL below 50 minutes in one segment is an astounding feat of skill, no matter the difficulty.

Hey, thanks Engy.

Yeah, I suppose I am going to get my own category for easy. Playing on hard mode was never kind to me, nothing ever worked.... I don't know how. But right now I'm kind of taking a break from my run and doing my "promo video" as it were. I might not even do that straight away, so sick right now  :puke:

Oh man, that smiley is so awesome.
hi
have you the demo of your ss run?
or you don't recorded it?
XXY
No, I have 1.1.1.0, so it would do me no good to record it. If I passed through a load time, the screen would just have gone crazy.

Right now I'm just recording a bunch of demo files of a bunch of insane tricks I'm pulling off for fun, and for the promo video I'll make when I get XP. I'm hoping to upgrade really soon, so I can start THINKING about a sub 50 run of Half-Life, and I can let my brother school the Starcraft/Broodwar records. Not to mention all my other upcoming PC runs:

Hi-Octane
Beating the Unreal speedrun
Half-Life SS
Maybe Blue-Shift, unless you intend to do it (I'll offer my services)
Maybe an Opposing Force SS
Syndicate SS

If anyone wants, I'll post some of those demo files I'm making.

Yes this is a double post, but I find it a worthy one. I've been looking for more time savers to help out Spider-Waffle for the past while now, but there really isn't anything more I can suggest that would help too much.

Since that's the case, I've been playing through Half-Life again, doing some really cool tricks and glitches that serve almost no purpose except to weird people out. I was surprised to see I had 33 demos by the time I hit Blast Pit. Needless to say, I've unearthed some pretty insane things since I've started. So if anyone has v.1.1.1.0 of Half-Life and is looking for some Half-Life entertainment, here's a small sample of the stuff I'm pulling off throughout the game:

(Just a note, these are links to rapidshare.de. You have to click on "Free," scroll to the bottom and wait for that little timer to go to 0, then you get to download the demo file.)

playdemo demo1
I nabbed the grenades from Unforseen Consequences and ran all the way back. I think you'll enjoy this jump as it's pretty high, and unforseen territory.

playdemo demo18
Look at the word on the wall.... Eh, nothing special, but it's hidden..... I think....

playdemo demo19
So this is what it's like to be the G-Man.

playdemo demo26
I'd make a great sniper.

playdemo demo27
This is just creepy. Drags on a bit, and I wished I had seen what was down that creepy ladder......

playdemo demo30
Exploring the elevator shaft in Blast Pit.

playdemo demo31
First wing jump.

playdemo demo32
Another wing jump.

Biggest one of them all:

playdemo demo33
Does anyone want to know how to get to the bottom of Blast Pit? This one may weird you out slightly. And no, I did not use god mode.

I'll host more if people are interested.

EDIT: And just a note, these were done on Half-Life, not HLSP Bunny. Don't know why I posted these in this topic. Oh well, enjoy all the same.

hi
I does some trick jumps too.
poCari, you should make a new topic like "HL trick jumping" or "HL funn stuff" for these demos.

Ah, I might make a thread about it later, we'll see. I'm not sure what tricks you could possibly do that wouldn't be old to me, Dark, but do what you want.

I've tricked out on this game so much, it's not even funny. I have over 180 demos in tricks alone (that's not counting the itty-bitty stuff. If I were to count that, about 240 tricks). Needless to say, I've done my fair share. But if you want to do some tricks, go for it, nothing holding you back there.

In other trick related news, right now I'm working on my oddity collection and "Bottom" collection.

For oddities, I'll include all the weird glitches and oddities I find (go figure). I've already found some FUCKED up things in this game, and they seem to be just coming and coming. How did I make that fish in the Surface Tension dam start flying? I may never know.

Now for my "Bottom" collection, it'll show cast me getting to the bottom of huge pits and such. The bottom collection is already done, I just need to work on getting to the bottom of Unforseen Consequences and it'll be done. You know that area with all the green crates on the crane? I'm trying to get down there alive. So far I haven't been successful though, can't find a wall to slide down Sad (I'll list all the pits I've gotten to the bottom of if anyone's interested :o)

Oh well. If anyone has v.1.1.1.0 of Half-Life and is interested in some of these kind of tricks, I'll host more demos of my more impressive tricks for everyone to enjoy. Possibly getting those recorded into an .avi so people can see what's going on. Now that'd be cool.

Gah, I wish I had XP so I could get FRAPs and just record all these into one gigantic video Sad Sad

EDIT: I just thought of a cool idea. I've been just hopping everywhere randomly, which is when I thought this up. I have no other way to phrase this, so here it goes. Does anyone have any challenges for me? God that sounded dumb, fuck. But yeah, if anyone wants to dish out challenges, I'm open for some trick suggestions. Mostly revolving around mortor/grenade hop tricks would be nice o.o;

So something like "hit Interloper's ceiling with a mortor hop!" or "go over that building with a grenade!" That kind stuff. But atleast make it a realistic challenge Tongue (Just for future referance, I have hit Interloper's ceiling with a mortor hop :))

I'll record a demo of me doing it. Of course it'll be on v.1.1.1.0, so yeah.....

omg! wtf?
pocari:

1. in win98 record your HL demos..
1.a turn each demo into an avi using fraps. compress each demo with Xvid at the same framerate. merge them into the final demo.
    1.b go to 2.

2. download XP from a torrent site/e-mule/etc.
getting WinXP on your computer ain't no rocket science FFS.

what's so damn hard? quit whining..
hi
yeah, aquashark is right. dont wait, just dl it.
XXY
FRAPs doesn't work with Win98. But where I can DL this torrent thing for XP? If it's a reliable source, I'll get it in a second, just give me the link.
omg! wtf?
haven't you ever heard of file sharing before? we can't provide you links to warez stuff because we would break forum rules.

check this out..
http://www.emule-project.net/

edit: i remember using Fraps in Win98 SE with no problems..
XXY
Really.... It never worked for me. I'll check that out later, guitar lesson right now @_@;
Whoa. you guys are just everywhere Grin

Indeed we are. Anyways, I'm going to try to talk my parents into finding some VHS tapes for me, and I'll try and see if my dad will upgrade my computer to XP today at breakfast (which is in a few minutes). God bless brunch, and how I can get into their good graces by making them toast.

Anyways, I'm currently writing up an enormous list of my tricks in a wordpad document, which I'll upload and post in here later. Just so people can understand just what has been done. I'm right at listing my tricks for Surface Tension about now. I have over 50 in this area, I swear to god. Ugh, guess I'd better finish Sad

Although, while reading through this enormous document when it's out, some of you may strike a rubbery one when you read just what I've done. Who knew there was tricks in Black Mesa Inbound? Tongue
