Trick discussion time!

Long story short, I'm looking to beat Spider-Waffle's time. I'm running through the game and locating some new tricks. Just kind of making this thread and seeing if anyone is interested, or if you have any cool new tricks you'd like to submit. I'll be updating if I find any tricks and such.

School is on, so I'm not sure if these updates will be frequent, but I suppose we'll see. So if you have any tricks or wish to help me locate some, feel free to post  Smiley

I don't know of any tricks, but I would definitely download the video if you made it.
i woudl realyl liek to help, im not good to run but i love this game

i wil try to help Smiley
Well, I'm going through each level and I'll tell anybody if I find tricks in some, that is how I'll work.

The trick I just found now is a faster way to get the hazard suit. I press the button and wait for the glass thing to rise a little, then I jump and grab it, then immediately jump back over the terminal. Usually people duck and wait for the glass to rise up, so this way I think is faster

Also, the ladder jump in the next area I've improved upon. It's difficult to explain, but when I open up the elevator doors, I walk off the right and I just fall straight down. If I'm lucky, I land right on the ladder and continue on, which is faster then doing that spin thing.

I will keep searching  Tongue

I don't know much about how the game works, but I know you can use the aliens that throw electricity to boost you in a higher jump.  I think it is possible to use the alien that spits the green blobs and has a face full of red tentacles (sorry I don't know what they are called, shows up in RandomEngy's run at 7:21) to boost you.  I tried and it bumped me up pretty far, maybe just enough to save a lot of time at unforseen consequences at the part with the borken bridge over the waterway (RandomEngy's run at 7:20ish).  I think it is possible, I will try a little bit more, and if you know what I am talking about maybe you could work on it too.  (I am not good at the game and just becaue I can't do it doesn't mean it isn't possible)
That's cool, so long as your suggesting things  Grin Incase you're wondering, the red tentacle thing is called a bull squid, and when it launches its melee attack at you, I've nicknamed it "bull squid hopping." Damn, I think Red Tentacle Thing is seriously a more gripping name than: Bullsquid... but anyways...

Indeed the green alien thing can boost you with its attack, which is useful in the test chamber. For the bullsquid underneath the broken bridge, I've been dying to see if I can get up there. I tried before and I never got enough height. What I've been doing is getting grenades a level earlier then grenading myself across the bridge... but getting the grenades takes time.... phooey. I'm trying to revise the test chamber jump so I can go through the dream sequence and still do the test chamber jump, but I don't think it's possible. I'll keep on trying... tomorrow that is, because I have school tomorrow and I'm gonna turn in.

See you guys later.

Well I guess you already went to bed then... but after several hundred failed attempts at boosting from the "Red Tenticle Thing" I finally got it to work  Grin

I hope you are talking about the same place I am...  You have to use it to jump up and land on the yellow and black striped bridge rail because if you simply land on the mesh you fall through... it does not exist.  This is quite tricky (for me) and if you tell me how to make a demo using steam I will try to do it for you.  I would have to email it to you though because I have no idea how to upload anything.

If you are planning a ss run (which I think you are since you said Spider-Waffle's run) then this trick might not be the best to try as it is very hard to do.  (took me 45 minutes).

I landed on the yellow and black striped rail about 5 times during this period, and all but the last one I fell off due to momentum from the boost.

EDIT:
This is the area right before the elevator to office complex.  It would save about 20 seconds I believe. This is a lot?
I did this on easy difficulty if that makes a difference... hope not.
Also, I remember reading somewhere on this site that boost height is proportional to health lost?  If this is the case, maybe the problem you had with not getting enough height is because you had armor when you were trying to get a boost.  I had no armor on my successful attempt.

hi
I want to beat 'Spider-Waffle's' single segment too  Grin
I know more tricks that Spider-Waffle use!
Download the Best time Half-Life video 45:45! Theres a bunch of new tricks ! or download the 40 Half-Life Shortcuts in the topic HL shortcuts or something!
The problem is when you for example arrived at the half of the game and you try a trick, and the trick doesnt work...

ALL AGAIN!

Therefore Spider-Waffle doesnt use many tricks in his Single-Segment

Its possible to JUMP OVER the broken bridge!!!

So much for bullsqid boosting.  If I could bunny hop I probably would've been able to figure that out... but I can't.

I'll look for something else then.

Well, I think I've found out every strategy that can be found in the beginning areas. I managed to do the bridge jump without the bullsquid, I made it all the way across  Shocked Nevermind the fact that it took me atleast 20 tries to do correctly.....

So I'm done those areas, and I've been working on Office Complex for about a couple hours. Here's the things I've done so far:

- Shoot out the window in that hallway so I can jump right through
- In the area with the little box and you jump to the ladder, there's a way you can skip going up the ladder and go straight for the last vent grate, not that hard either
- Instead of waiting behind the box, I jump right through the headcrabs
- I take Barney with me to kill the headcrabs, and I push him into the door only once

We've got Hostiles won't be that huge of an area for concern  :), so I'm going to keep looking in Office Complex for somethings.
Don't think!  feeeeeal

can you elaborate on this?

Sure.

The area in Office Complex and you fall out of the ceiling into that hallway with the two headcrabs and the boxes. What I'm trying to do is either push the big box, jump on it and jump up, or jump from the little box to the ladder and jump to the last vent. Trying to skip going up all the way up the ladder.

It's a shnazzy little trick if you can do it right... which I'm trying hard to right now. I might even try out a headcrab o_o;

I'll keep trying.

EDIT: Well, it appears it's possible, but I'm not convinced it's faster. What I'm doing now is jumping on one of those nifty headcrabs and jumping up to the ladder, then I jump past that torrent of headcrabs in the next area without taking any damage, and no stopping either  Cheesy

Sorry for the double post, but Spider-Waffle, which NPCs did you find that opened doors they weren't supposed to? I know of these ones:

Barney in Office Complex
Scientist in Lambda Core
The Scientist in Anomalous Materials
Scientist in We've Got Hostiles
Scientist in Office Complex

I think I might have missed one, but whatever. Which new ones did you find? Could I use them in this run? Or was there some sort of problem with the recording that basically meant they were inaccessable?

Hi you all..

I'm a new member (but a long time reader) of the SDA...

Anyhow...

I'm playing on the "store bought version" of HL, and I use version 1.1.0.8 (this version is not connected to Steam).

I have a question, can you watch demos that I record using this version? (I think that you can, but I'm not sure.)

The only HL-speedrun I have is RandomEngy's 45:45, I also have some of Spider-Waffle's "cuts" from this thread:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=pcgames;action=display;num=1118551288;start=0

...but because I still have a 56k-modem I can't download them all...

If I find some minor shortcuts in RandomEngy's run, should I upload them?

and btw, Dark_Devil said that you can "JUMP OVER the broken bridge!!!" is he talking about THIS bridge?
http://img308.imageshack.us/img308/4/hl0td.jpg (sorry for the crappy quality and colours, I have major problems with hardware...)

(and if he is, where can I find the vid/demo?!)

I've been "copying" all of RandomEngy's tricks in his run, I've been testing all of them and found to my surprise that I managed to pull them of (most of them).

and one last question, is there any major differences between HL (my original version) and the HLSP-version? (meaning gameplay wise; speed etc.)
hlsp is all about speed
its mainly uncap the bhop speed
Don't think!  feeeeeal
This is in cronilogical order:

1. scientest in anamolus matierals (opens retinal scanner door)
2. scientest beind 1 way door in office complex
3. barney, door by headcrabs
4. scientest, door to room with blast door button
5. alien slave, door to room before freezer with scientest in it (dopefish actually found this, 1 of 2 or 3 time savers I didn't find myself)
6. barney, door to room with tons of ammo and long jump
7.  scientest, door exiting room above
Hey, how's your run going btw spider-waffle? I don't know if it's finished or cancelled or what.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
I'm still trying find a good way to record the segments with the NPCs mentioned above.

Fraps seems to lag too much for me, but didn't someone say they recorded some HL run with fraps?
hi
Yes DaleLewill i talked about this bridge, but it is only possible with the HLSP Bunny Mod
Don't think!  feeeeeal
Using the boxes I've jumped across with caped bhop.  You can also usekey boxes in the water below and gain massive speed and launch up the sloped wall.  And of course there's the bullsquid which I did over a year ago.

To get over the broken bridge, I just go down that huge ramp the area before and keep up my speed o_o;

Well, I did the elevator jump in Blast Pit and it turned out fine... after about 10 jumps that is. I kept smashing into it  ;D. When the train smashes the thingy, I jump all the way into the pipe without health loss. I've only done it once, but it involves hitting a part of it that... isn't the ground. Tough to explain.

In the next area I'm going to try out my "super elevator jump" if you will, which basically means I'm going to try and jump from the ledge directly onto the elevator, but I don't think you can get that kinda height. The next area I'm going to try out that insanely hard jump to get to the power place without any damage. Because if I land that jump without taking any damage, I can use my handy new grenade hop trick in the power generator room.
hi
sounds oneself well  ;D, tell us about your new grenade hop trick please

You know the spinning transport thing? I jump on its red rail, and I grenade myself up to one of the ladders, so I can just climb up and activate the switch. Then I fall back down onto the transport thing again and I only take like 8 damage, so I'm still very well alive.

This'll only work really smoothly if I can land that jump before without difficulty. Because if I don't, I'll have to stop and grab health  Sad

EDIT: Wait until you see what new mortor hop/grenade tricks I've found in the later parts of the game  Grin
hi
Cool, you found more mortar and grenade tricks?
I cant wait until its finished  Grin
XXY
Yep, I've found a little bit. I'll fill you guys in on what I've found. But before I list them, I found a new trick in Blast Pit. When I'm heading to the huge fan, I do crouch hopping across that long pipe. After I throw the switch, I jump up and there's a crack in the wood blockade that you can squeeze through.

Anyhoo, here's the grenade hop tricks I've found. Chronological order. All of which I'm probably going to use in my run:

- The power generator hop

- Grenade hopping up to that area in On a Rail that people usually use two tripmines to get up to

- In Surface Tension, in the area with the helicopter after you get out of that pipe. Once I climb up the ladder, a mortor hop up to that area

- The area far ahead with the tank, and the electrical fence area, there's a huge brute thing that falls on the ground. I jump on his head and grenade myself up on top of the building

- The area where the guy is like, "come in.. cooper," I do a grenade or mortor hop from the ground directly to the targeting station. By the way, when I blow up the huge blast door, I move the target over to the corner wall closest to me and explode it. Then I can jump directly to that area without having to go all the way around. Tis faster.

From here to the rest of the game I'm looking for a lot more, and there proves to be a lot. I'll keep updating people  Smiley
