Ruling the cosmos!
So in my time, I believe that I've figured out that the games that I enjoy absolutely more than any other are ones that basically let you do whatever you want; at least one amongst the features of giving you heavy influence to the appearance of your character, that give your heavy influence in what your character does, or that give you and very expansive world to go and explore and just have fun in.

So my request for y'all is as follow; what are some more games like this? I need more of this in my life. Great examples of games that I absolutely adore that accomplish this goal include Fallout 3, Dark Souls, Bravely Default, Final Fantasy Tactics, Dragon Quest IX, and Transistor (come on, I'm making this easy for you guys) (I should also mention The Elder Scrolls series so nobody else does. I have Skyrim and Oblivion, and I enjoyed them, I've just never bothered to complete them for some reason). Anyway, thanks guys!

Ruling the cosmos!
Oh, and I should mention, I honestly mostly just like DQIX for the character's visual customizations with the armor and stuff, not that the gameplay was bad (and the story was pretty good too), but I doubt that I'd like many other DQ games.

Also, PSO is another pretty big one, the character's visual customization is ridiculously wonderful in those games, and the gameplay is really really good.
On the appearance front, there's the  Saint's Row games.  SR2 especially has an wide variety in clothing options, with several layers of clothing and several options for how those clothes are worn.
Want to wear a leather jacket over a button-up shirt that is tucked in but left unbuttoned to expose the tee shirt underneath, while also wearing a cowboy hat tilted to the side at just the right angle? In Saint's Row 2, you can.
King Wabasami
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

The character creator is the best in any game I've played
The Sims ! Tongue

But seriously, from the top of my head: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect games, Soul Calibur (although no expansive world to explore).
Ruling the cosmos!
Oh yeah, I was really interested in Dragon Age. I remember that I'd tried to go play Origins at some point, but I was having trouble with my controller, so I just never got around to it.
Custom Vehicles in F-Zero GX have three parts to combine (Cockpit, booster, bodypart), each of which has 26 variants.

Anything you can do I can do halfass
There was a time in my life when I loved that sort of thing; these days I find I have so much less time to explore the customization space that it ends up being more of a hassle than draw.  But highlights from back in the day:

- any Star Ocean game
- any Armored Core game
- Shining Soul is a nice portable series if you like PSO-style customization
- the Dark Cloud series features degrees of both character and world customization
- Xenoblade Chronicles has visually-updated character equipment on par with any decent MMO
- the Summon Night: Swordcraft Story sub-series doesn't have huge visual customization, but the craft equipment selection is fairly ample for the genre
- more recently, the mobile game Brave Frontiers melds the near-limitless CCG mechanic with ample per-unit equipment & stats tailoring
Your blade never cuts deep enough
Spore and Xenoblade Chronicles are ones I can think of.
