I think if you want to create a decent run, first view the existing one (perhaps a few times) and see what you think could be improved
it'll show you exactly why you do not want to draw blizzard, fire, and thunder....
(and I expect it'll show you some things you did not yet know)

Well, I'll try, but It'll take me a while. But won't the original spells be sufficent? Since the enemies won't be levelling up I can easily crush them with those spells, Plus GFs.
I don`t think it makes sense to use GFs in battles. They consume much time and don`t do enough damage.
If you want to replay darkwasabi`s run, don`t forget to couple Pandemona soon enough.

I never did this 'refining' thing before, so I'll check it out.
Welcome to the part of FFVIII that actually makes the game fun.

Man, this kid has a LOT to learn...

Bitch Knee'd my nuts!
@MrNintendo  well you could use the gamefaqs speedrun guide, it may be only to complete the game around 14 hours but if darkwasabi's game completion time was faster than your disc 1 speed you should check it out. I was wondering in the begining when you get control squall[in the classroom] is it faster to get your gf's on the computer or run down to quistis then get them?

This game has a pretty fun junction system and card game.  I remember refining a lot of death spells right in the beginning even before the Ifrit Cave so that each hit was an instant kill (squall) after playing quite a few card games.  Too bad this won't help in a speedrun since you'll be avoiding most random battles.

Are all of dark wasabi's segments on archive.org?

I only see 10 files. (I just got back from watching Farringa's FF7 run)
Everything's better with Magitek
Yes, it's all there, but the segments are split among 3 links:

Thanks, I feel really retarded now. Grin

Don't feel too bad.  Just know before you post anything that it will be meticulously scrutinized by the great players here who seem to be everywhere!  I find it's best to post something when there's actually something to be said.  Grin

@mrnintendo
Hey so how are you coming along with your run?
have you decided record a segment, upload it, and show us your talent?
Im about to start a speed run for FF8 and am looking for help on how to set up. I have 2 systems but not sure if either is allowed. I have my ps3 and my friend has a ps2 which he put a seperate operating system into so he can store the games and play them into his ps2 so he wouldnt need to use the discs. Also how would I go about recording it. I read the info on the site and it seems that the easiest way is to use a dvd recorder but for segmented runs would i need to have each segment on a seperate disc because im confused and it would be difficult rewinding the disc over and over when trying to perform a certain segment. I may have other questions as well but these are just the basic ones.
Your friend's PS2 isn't allowed.

You're gonna need a DVD Recorder and a powered splitter to do the job. DVD recorders lag, and I'm pretty sure you're not gonna want to miss any Renzo triggers =p

Can we merge this thread with the existing one?

The PS2 isn't the problem - it's loading the games off of a HDD that is.  HDD Loader is forbidden per the rules - you'll have to play the games off of the CDs themselves.  Sorry!
He says it is probably easier to record using a tv tuner so you can record the run on the computer in avi format.
I have the discs for the Final Fantasy 8. If I run it on the ps2 using discs only and not the HDD Loader, is it alright then.
I'd recommend the TV tuner route too, quite honestly.

tbh, I'd recommend playing it on your PS3. Faster loading times, but it's completely legitimate to play it on a PS3.

I haven't even started yet so hold your horses.
Speedrunning waits for nobody.

Only interest does.
Ok now where can I get a tv tuner. Radio Shack? Also while using tv tuner do i need to use  a recording program aka camtasia to record it or does it record automatically.
Go to Bust Buy. Capture devices, either USB or PCI, come with the software to do it.

Any Dazzle is a good capture device, but don't get their 'DVD Recorder' since it doesn't come with the proper software. Not sure if they took it off the market yet, but all that is $59 isn't gold.
You kind of confused me there Carcinogen.
They have a wide array of "TV Tuners" (Capture Devices) at Best Buy.

Get a USB video capture device. It should be right in there with all the computer parts.
