I am currently planning on doing this. I have already watched the current segmented run, and I agree with most of the tactics used there, so I will be using them.

There are several potential problem bosses that I can foresee. I'll be using names from various versions since I'm used to the GBA version more.

Byblos opens with Wind Slash(Run is over)
Titan opens with Earth Shaker(Run is over)
Chimera Brain opens with Aqua Breath(Run is over)
Gilgamesh 2 while hasted
Crystals

I am aware of the strategy of confusing a Gaelicat to get Float for Titan, but that would waste too much time. I'll just take the risk.

For other bosses that would potentially be problematic,

Calofisteri(Wood Sprite boss if she casts Wall. Blessed Kiss to prevent that)

Catastrophe( He gets Blessed Kiss also)

Neo Exdeath(Won't be seeing him.)

As for Magic that is bought that I won't need, I won't be needing the Break spell. Not sure what I should do with that cash.(maybe save it for throwing)

Twintania can be beaten without Break due to its charging form being set at level 30 instead of the usual 39 it has when it isn't.

Route is as follows unless I change it.

1. Obviously run from every battle unless stated otherwise.

2. Do opening stuff, skip items, get Broadsword and Tent from the Wind Shrine. Fight a Black Goblin and a White Snake to get Lenna and Galuf to level two.

3. Wing Raptor dies before it can close its wings.

4. Get jobs, change Faris to Black Mage, Bartz and Galuf to Blue Mage, Lenna to Thief.

5. Go to Tule, learn Goblin Punch, get all items in Beginner House.

6. Spend the night and then buy Bolt and Ice spells. Maybe change Bartz and Galuf to Black Mages before spending the night.

7. Do the Torna Canal events. Party for boss will either be 4x Black Mage or 3x Black Mage and 1 Thief. Cast Bolt.

8.  Ship Graveyard, just run through it. For boss, use Goblin Punch every turn with Blue Mages.

9. Change 2 members to Black Mages after Siren. Level up on two tatuses.

10 Get the hidden Ice Rod, run through the North Mountain break it on Magissa.

11. Fly to Walse Castle, do events, fly to Walse Tower.

12. Go up the tower and use a Tent on the save point. Stealing Mythril Swords from Ice Soldiers could be worth it for the Garula battle, but not a must.
Thread title:
100% runs=great to watch
I'd definitely be interested in watching this.  However, what works in a multi segment and what is feasible in a single segment are often 2 very different things.  Ya might want to poke around the FVI singe segment thread in order to see what I mean in general.

Either way, good luck!

13. Garula- Faris as Freelancer, the others are Blue Mages. Whip for Paralyze, the Blue Mages Goblin Punch.

14. Fly back to the Castle after getting the jobs, learn of Karnak, go through the Meteor.

15. Buy an Ice Rod(unless it was changed to do this in the GBA version, you keep what is bought), get arrested for no good reason, wait, then when I get out, buy more rods. If I get the Mythril Swords, it'll help some with the Gil problem since I don't need them now.

16. Go through the Fire Ship. I do not need to learn Selfdestruct

17. Boss- Break the ice Rod, Break another(lucky). Break Ice Rod, attack(someone dies), Break ice Rod(unlucky)

18. Run through Karnak castle. I'm not sure how much of the Gil is mandatory for me to grab. Learn Death Claw from the boss.

19. Buy Confuse and Raise from Karnak. Buy Fire Rods for later.

20. Ancient library is easy enough to run through. Ifrit gets rods broken on him, use him to learn Level 5 Death, then kill Byblos.

21. Get the Ship, go to Crescent. Have it sink, then get the Chocobo. Go buy scrolls from Lix. Learn Dark Spark from the island above Crescent.

22. Sand Worm dies to Water Skills. I should have Flee by now.

23. Cray Claw should die to 2 Lightning skills.

24. See the events involving Ronka, go to Cid about the Adamantine.

25. Adamantoise dies from Level 5 Death.

26. Launchers and Flamethrowers die before they become a threat.

27. I was planning to use Level 5 Death to take out the Launchers in the Soul Cannon fight, but that won't be needed. Just Skills and Rods.

28 Grab the treasures from the Ronka Ruins.

29. Not sure if I will use the current strategy for Archeoaevis. Forms 2 and 4 definitely get Death Clawed though.

30 Meteor bosses and the Gilgamesh fights will be the same way.

31. Go through Moogle Forest. Phoenix Down for the boss.

32. Abductor 2 will die to Gil toss/Zeninage/$toss.

33. My original plan for the Dragon Pod fight involved Zeninage instead of Titan. It will be better to use Titan to make sure I don't run out of Gil at a bad time.

34. Gilgamesh on the boat- my plan originally involved Death Claw, but I forgot he was heavy, so I'll use the level manipulation strategy.

35. Atomos will die the same way as Gilgamesh.

36. Go do the crappy Guido's Cave section. I agree with Alex about this part of the game.

37. Crystal Boss is a problem. Zeninage uses the formula (level + 10 - Enemy Defense) * 150. This may cause a problem.

38. Learn Level 2 Old from a Magic Dragon at Exdeath's castle. Muddle isn't actually needed, but it'll help.

39. Exdeath- Level 2 Old, Level 5 Death

40. Do the stuff at Castle Tycoon

41. Antlion, the same

42. The pyramid is a part I'm actually worried about. I'll need to check the damage on Requiem over Firaga, but I think Firaga wins in the mummy fight. I also need to know exactly how much defense Faris needs to have 0 damage done. I can't really avoid the snakes here, so it'll be useful for some levelling.

Edit: Never mind. I think it's 55 Defense which matches their attack value. That isn't too hard to manage. Bone Mail(30), Genji Glove(12) Flame Shield(7). That's 49 right there. Shouldn't be that hard to scrape up another 6 Defense. Heck, even a Mythril Helmet bought from Karnak would be enough to cover that.

43. Melusine is a problem as well. I suck with the Level 2 Old-> Level 5 Death thing. Of course, Dark Spark has to be used first.

44. Grab the Masamune from Sealed Castle(safety)

45. Use my First Strike from Masamune to berserk every single boss(Blessed Kiss) I fight for the rest of the game, except maybe Halicarnusus. Apanda is naturally vulnerable to Berserk, so I don't need to add Haste as well with the Blessed Kiss(Bacchus Wine).

Main problems I see are Gil and bosses that kill your party in one hit.

Edit: I have seen the FF VI thread. I understand how it works. Of course, I'm not sure which of these 2 games is harder to pull this off on. Of course, I suck more at VI than I do at V. I just could not see myself pulling something like this on FF VI.

Though from what I remember about both games, I can't remember much in FF VI that would wipe an entire party out. I don't think there are as many bosses that can do that.

The_Enigma: 2007-05-27 01:58:28 pm
I'll be playing through the game again to test some things. I'd rather do that than to mess the run up by trying to rush this.

Plus, I need to make sure some of the stuff works and to make sure I remember where everything is at.

Edit: My testing is so far after the Karnak escape. I did forget to buy the Ice2 spell, which was fine since this test is using saves, but I need Ice 2 for Karnak.

I was thinking that I could get Flee before Karnak, but that would be too risky(not to mention I would get it during Karnak which ruins the point of using this method). Not only would I need to steal 3 Mythril Swords going up the Walse Tower, I would have to survive Garula's double counters either once or twice. I'm not sure if the hit that takes her under 800 HP gets countered. Either way, not using the Whip is too risky for this small return.

Ice 2 should be able to allow me to get through Karnak even with Sergeant encounters.

During my test so far, I so far have only fought what was fought in the segmented run, except for the Motor Trap group. This leaves everyone at level 5, so I need to do another random battle.

So far, my memory of where stuff is at is okay. I did forget where the 1,000 Gil at Carwen was(but found it after searching the town). And I forgot about the free Mythril Helmet you get, which was nice(I never actually noticed it before).

At the Wind Shrine it took me a lot of battles to find the White Snake and Black Goblin encounter. I'm not going for optimization on this test run, but I would have started the run over after the amount of encounters I had gotten into before seeing it. I'll make sure to kill the first group of those I see in the actual run just in case I don't see it after getting the Broadsword.

It also took a long time for the Goblin at Tule to use Goblin Punch on a Blue Mage.

BTW, I didn't know you could get the World Map there if you missed it in the Ship Graveyard.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I read through your route and AFAIK it looks good.

You probably already know everything in the thread, but take a look at the old FF5 thread just to cover your bases. One example improvement I can think of right now is, opening the menu resets your step counter on the overworld.
Edit history:
The_Enigma: 2007-05-28 03:58:35 am
If that's a method for avoiding random encounters, it's probably too much trouble than it's worth.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music

If I may ask, how is that too much trouble though? Whenever you feel like you've walked a good distance and an encounter is probably coming, just open and close the menu. If you're running on the PS1 for example, open/close takes 5 secs and running away from a fight takes at least 15 secs.

The_Enigma: 2007-05-28 04:30:33 am
I guess I can try it. It could save a decent amount of time, if I decide to do it at the right time. Of course, this assumes I actually do it at the right time, which I won't, but I can still try to use it.
I bought too much stuff on my test file, so I need to go back to a previous save.

I need to be able to get through the game quickly while being able to save, but not making any major mistakes(dieing against bosses will be fine in the testing since that won't be due to mistakes) before I can even think of actually recording this.

Glowy eyes of DOOM!
Hey there, didn't notice this thread until today.

Yeah, the thought of a SS graced my mind back when I was doing my run.  It will require a very high level of skill and memorization.  One thing you will almost certainly want to do is make cheat sheets, and look at them during the cutscenes while you mash the appropriate button.

It may even be possible to beat my time in a SS, mostly because I refused to skip Neo-Exdeath (I was young and foolish then).  But yeah, you mentioned a lot of places where luck comes into play.  You will have to absolutely minimize these, especially as you go further along in the game.  Otherwise, you'll find that probability is a bitch, and you simply don't have the theoretically expected 2000 hours necessary to complete the run in a single segment.  If, for instance, you allow the possibility of getting screwed by a 1/2 probability event at the end of the game, you're doubling the expected number of hours to complete the run.  You may have to learn blessed kiss earlier than I did, and use it a lot more often than I did, to counteract the luck factor later in the game.  In general you have to be much more wary of luck factors than I was.  A few things to keep in mind:

-Death Claw misses a lot.  For example, I might not plan to use it on Archeoavis forms 2 and 4 for that reason.

-Darkshock misses even more, to the point of being almost totally unreliable in a SS.  Each character level improves the chance by 1% (less if the boss has magic evade), so dragon/sampson powers might be needed if you plan to hit with it in a timely fashion.

-Certain places I can think of, you'll probably want to have higher character levels than I did, for increased HP and also increased $toss damage.  Gilgamesh at Big Bridge is one, crystal battle is another.  For Gilgamesh at Big Bridge I would definitely consider releasing Sand Bears (found in the desert of world 1).  For the crystal battle, you must not allow them to use their desperation attacks, which requires precise amounts of $toss damage.  Plus, their normal attacks are strong and have the potential to take down a character if they focus them too much.

-Money is a bit of a problem in world 1.  Because you'll probably want a reasonable safety margin for things like phoenix down, tent, rods, skills, and $toss, and because you might even want to buy some armor, you might need more money than I did.  Consider picking up extra chests or winning extra random battles (some are better for gil than others).

You'll have to practice the following things until your eyes burn:

-L2 old + L5 death.

-Running around at super speed without falling into pits, missing turns, etc.

-Fast menu manipulation, plus remembering to equip the right items and the right jobs at the right times.  Sort your items menu periodically so that the ones you use most in-battle are at the top.

I think those are the main points I want to mention ATM.  Oh yeah, I do agree with Enhasa about the step counter thing; I would have used it if I had known about it, and you have the potential to save time (clock-time, and also a larger amount of real-time) by doing it.  Depending on how likely the random encounters are in a certain area, decide on a reasonable number of steps after which to bring up the menu.  Anyway, I'll be lurking around this forum if you want my advice.
Edit history:
The_Enigma: 2007-06-03 03:14:47 am
The problem with higher levels would be more money needed for $toss. I may have to do that though, but I'm going to try without levelling too much first. I'm comfortable with low level games, but this isn't a normal low level game.

I also did not see the following mentioned in the old topic, but I'll have to try it when I get to that part of the game in my test runs.

I know it works on the SNES version(which I obviously do not own a legit copy of) but not the GBA version, but I have no information about it in the PS1 version. If it works, I'll be able to skip the pyramid. Of course, I wouldn't be able to get the Masamune then.

I was also considering the Bear thing. I think the order was Sand Bear, Jail Bear, Sand Bear, Sand Bear.
Glowy eyes of DOOM!
Huh?  Are you referring to some sort of glitch that uses "Exit?" I remember trying it somewhere very near the start of world 3, and it enabled me to go directly to Mirage and get the black chocobo without beating the pyramid.  However, I couldn't get the airship without triggering the cutscene at the end of the pyramid, hence I couldn't enter the X-zone.  Give it a try though. . .

The_Enigma: 2007-06-08 06:47:14 pm
The Gil problem is solved(or should be). I was testing the infinite items trick, and it can be done in this version.

I plan to do it twice so far.

Coral Swords from Cray Claw. This glitch should get me 255 of them. 255 x 1,400 Gil each= 357,000 Gil during World 1, which should be more than enough for everything I need.

I missed this during my current test run. I'm not sure if the Coral Sword can be thrown. It has to be in order to do the glitch, otherwise I need to try out the alternate method.

The next time is getting Ethers from Prototype. Ethers can actually be used, so I don't need to worry about this one.

The glitch is as follows. This is copied from someone's FAQ.

9.  INFINITE ITEMS
This bug applies to the SNES version but not the Gameboy Advance version.  I'm
not sure about the Playstation version.
Step 1 (before the battle):  Have one character with one or both hands empty.
Have one character with the !Steal ability.  (Note that Thieves automatically
have the !Steal ability.)  Have one character with the !Throw ability.  (Note
that Ninjas automatically have the !Throw ability.)  (You can have one
character fill two or three of those roles, if you want.)

During the battle:  Step 2:  Have the character with one or both hands empty
equip a weapon or shield from your inventory.  (It must be the only copy of
that weapon or shield that was in your inventory.)  Step 3:  Throw the empty
spot in your inventory that used to contain the weapon or shield that you just
equipped.  Step 4:  Steal from your enemy.  (The trick won't work if you
already had any copies of the thing you're stealing in your inventory at the
beginning of the battle.)  Step 5:  Get rid of the thing you just stole, by
using the Ninja's !Throw ability, the Chemist's !Drink ability, the Chemist's
!Combine ability, or just using it as an item (if it's something like a
potion).  This can't be done with things like armor that can't be thrown,
drunk, combined, or used.  Step 6:  End the fight normally.  When it's over,
you'll have an infinite amount of the item you stole.

When you have an infinite amount of an item, you can only sell them one at a
time.  You'll also have the option of selling 255 of them, but if you do that,
then you won't have an infinite amount of them anymore.  If you buy more of the
item or sort your inventory, you won't have an infinite amount of them anymore
(sorting changes it so that you only have 99 of them).  When you have an
infinite amount of an item, you can't use any of them outside of battle
(potions, example).  So you might want to sort your inventory so you can use
the items outside of battle or so you can sell a few dozen of them all at once
and still have some left.  Without using this trick, you can get an infinite
amount of an item through savestate hacking by putting 255 copies of the item
in your inventory.

If you do step 3 twice before proceeding to step 4, then you can do this trick
without having to do step 5.  That lets you do it for things like armor that
can't be thrown, drunk, combined, or used.  Although that results in you only
getting 99 copies of the item, rather than an infinite amount.

Edit: Just checked the Algorithms FAQ, and the Coral Sword can definitely be thrown, so I can use the glitch on it.

Edit 2: WTF was I thinking? I don't need to glitch 99 Ethers. I can just buy the damn things.
Edit history:
The_Enigma: 2007-06-10 03:33:20 pm
Update on my test run progress.

I loaded an older save and glitched 255 Coral Swords.

I tried out Water Scrolls against the Archeoaevis. That didn't work out as well as I thought it would. It isn't immune to Water in any of the 5 forms, but that still does around as much damage as Wind Slash does, plus it wasted more time. Rod Breaking may be the best option here.

---
I was able to kill Titan in 2 Gil Tosses. I forgot to learn Dark Spark until after Galuf left, which caused my levels to end up high enough for this. I'm not sure if this ends up being for the better or not.
---

---
For the Chimera boss, I'm not sure if I'll go with 3 Gil Tosses, or if I'll try the Steal, Death Claw, Attack method. If I do the second one and fail the steal, I won't try the steal again.
---

---
I forgot Gilgamesh 2 had Wind Slash. He is also fast enough, even without Haste to be a threat during the second phase, which surprised me. This will definitely be a bigger obstacle than I thought it would be while recording.

Sand Bears aren't exactly reliable since they are kind of rare. Jail Bears wouldn't be for the same reason. Plus, with Trainers, once they use their captured monster, they are pretty useless.

I think I will need to Slow him to make the battle safer in the actual run. I don't have it in this test run, but I'll definitely get it in the recorded run attempts.

Rod breaking does more damage here than $toss does, but I'm not sure how much time the animation lengths will save or lose.

Mute will stop him from using his support spells, but Silence may be the better option since he is vulnerable to it in this version, unlike the GBA version where he is immune to both of these spells. Of course, I need to Slow him before using Mute.

I'll keep a save before here to practice navigating the bridge.
---

***
Things I still need to test:

***
Finding a 100% Gilgamesh 2 strategy(minus Wind Slash). The only one I can think of other than Slow + Mute is releasing 4 Zus, but that one takes too long to catch the Zus.
***

***
Whether I can safely learn Dark Spark with 3 characters without screwing over the Crystals battle.
***

***
Whether or not I can actually skip the Pyramid. If so, find out how it works, and if necessary whether it is faster. The glitch involved is called "Skipping the Pyramid", but from the information about it, I'm not sure if this makes the dungeon not mandatory or if it just allows you to do other World 3 stuff before it.
***

***
I no longer need to test out whether Requiem or Firaga is better on the Mummies. I need Firaga anyway for Apanda. I thought he was weak against Holy(Excalibur) also, but he isn't.
***

***
On the subject of the 12 Legendary Weapons, I don't think I can get the Masamune, or Excalibur. There is a scene whenever you get them the first time, or was it the second?, but I think it was the first. This will make the final dungeon a little harder.
***

***
Seeing if I can find a way to catch a Metamorph(original form) in Guidos Cave. They cast Old on Release, and I don't think a released monster can miss.(of course I have had a released Blaster on a different file do nothing before, but I think it was due to choosing the Paralyze effect on something immune to it). If it doesn't miss, I'll use the Old + Level 5 Death strategy on Halicarnusus. Otherwise, I'll do the Blessed Kiss, Level up Mix thing
***

***
Unfortunately, for the above one, Metamorph is heavy, so Death Claw and other gravity moves don't work. I hope getting the Kornago Gourd isn't necessary for that, but it probably is. They can be Berserked and Sleeped, so having it transform isn't an issue.
***
Glowy eyes of DOOM!
Interesting ideas.  I never thought of unleashing old on an odd-level boss like that.  However, I'm not sure that it will  be any faster, once you take into account the time needed to catch a metamorpha.  Getting the jar is yet another slowdown if you elect to do it.  Plus, using old + L5 death too many times is risky, especially late in the game like that.  The alternative, which is laying the beatdown with a beserked, leveled-up, 2-handed character as I did, is actually not that slow.

Yes, legendary weapons are out of the question because getting any of them triggers a cut-scene.  You'll have no masaume, but remember that you can get an "artemis shoes" (or whatever the relic is called that gives you permanent haste) in the castle where I did.

I wonder if you can use the infinite items glitch to obtain infinite dragon fangs?  However, the only enemy earlier than the X-zone that has dragon fang as a common steal is Chimera brain, and you don't exactly want to dilly-dally against him.  Having infinite dragon fangs could be uber, though.  Mostly for dragon power, but dragon fangs also grant you some amazing defensive spells if you need them (namely dragon shield, dragon armor, and giant drink).
If I do decide to glitch 99 Dragon Fangs, I would have to get Love Song. No way around that. Not worth it considering

Thief would go first and switch equips and defend.

Ninja should be next and throws the empty slot.

Bard sings the song.

Thief defends again.

Ninja throws the spot again since I can't !Drink, !Item, !Throw, !Mix it yet.

Thief steals, Bard sings, Ninja throws stuff. It would take too long.

So, it's not impossible, but it would take too much time that it isn't worth doing.

Most of the other good statuses that it is vulnerable to aren't available yet(Berserk). It is vulnerable to Death, and that is available to be used, but catching the necessary monster for Blaster would take too long compared to Death Claw + Attack or $toss.
Glowy eyes of DOOM!
Hey, I'm gonna bump your thread because I'm genuinely curious if you've made any progress.  We're always interested to know.
I have not forgotten about this. I was just taking a nice, long break from the game. I had been playing various versions of it way too much.

I'll continue my test run later today though.
Did this make it anywhere? Sorry if this is necroposting-- I'm about to single-segment FFV in a couple of weeks for a Final Fantasy marathon, and while Aresake's run and comments and thread are super-helpful, obviously this would be helpful too Smiley
OMG, real meaning, omega was da s...
There's an advantage and disadvantage in this.  If you open up a new topic you follow a forum age rule but at the same time you miss what history had to say on the idea.  If they were so concerned with a forum's age why not program it to lock automatically after three months or six months?

My favorite Final Fantasy.  It was no walk in the park and any run on it is pretty nice imo.
Edit history:
dn: 2012-06-19 09:19:00 am
I am researching FFV for single segment speedrunning purposes, maybe even serious submission attempts. I am wanting to know A) whether the GBA version would be even be acceptable, due to the lack of a major glitch for skipping Neo Exdeath, and B) ways to get around some of the stumbling blocks presently known.

I am presently using the GBA version as it is the version I own. If I have to change versions, I will likely acquire an SFC cart, because I loathe the Anthologies version.

As I am to understand, the major stumbling blocks include:
Karnak Escape
Titan
Chimera Brain
Gilgamesh 2
Prototypes in Pyramid (can box you in, ending a run instantly)
Certain Void bosses?

At present, I'm considering AP grinding in the Sunken Ship (there is a room with a 3AP formation, but I don't know how many fights would be effective) for Flee, which would help immensely with Karnak and running through later dungeons (most notably the Void). I'm not entirely sure this is worthwhile though.

If enough gil can be accrued though efficient means, it might be prudent to purchase Float rather than relying on RNG for it.

Chimera Brain seems like a crap shot, unless there is a way to mitigate Aqua Breath. The run may have to be done RBA style just for that fight alone.

Same with Prototypes, unless a reliable bypass can be found.

Any more info? I'm currently working through the present segmented run and taking notes. Some of it has to be modified due to the amount of luck manipulation, but it seems solid for the most part.

I'm also interested in SSing FFV (Anthologies version, since I don't have a GBA or Gamecube), though I haven't done much with it yet beyond reading the FFV threads on the forum, watching the segmented run on the site, and starting a refresher playthrough of the game (been a few years since I've done a full playthrough).

I've thought a bit about general strats for an SS Anthologies run, and the ideas I've had are:

Bosses that can OHKO my whole party on the first turn with bad RNG luck - grind a few levels (ideally where there's enemy formations vulnerable to Lvl 5 Death or some other quick kill method) so I'll have enough HP to survive a turn or two, and abuse item duplication to afford better armor.
Beating bosses the segmented run uses Black Shock or Death Claw on (since those spells have low accuracy) - abuse item duplication and use Gil Toss (not sure yet how much grinding would be required to make Gill Toss do meaningful damage) or Throw
Reset spell - use this to restart a battle that's not going well, or to give me another shot if I mess up the timing for Lvl 2 Old + Lvl 5 Death

I haven't played the GBA version, though I know it fixes the item duplication and Kiss of Blessing glitches present in the SFC/Anthologies versions.  I don't see why the GBA version wouldn't be suitable for running (the run currently on the site shows that NeoExdeath can be beaten in a speedrun setting without the Kiss of Blessing glitch - it would just take more levels and better equipment to have a better chance in an SS setting), though a GBA run would need to find another source of money besides item duplication.
Bal Basement farming might be a thing in SS, though how much I can't say for certain. It's 16AP/reload on the GBA version, and a bit more of a crapshot on the other versions. Not sure where there's good EXP though.

Even on the other version though, it's 4AP for the smaller, more common encounter, and I'm figuring it might be worth it for leveling a job with an alternative method. SFC verison with duping would make Zeninage feasible.
