I started a thread at atariage.com asking people what their favorite "classic" NES game was.  The choices were Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metriod, Tetris, Mega Man, and Final Fantasy.  There were arguments for Dragon Warrior instead of Final Fantasy, and a lot of beef about not including Castlevania, which was probably a mistake on my part, and has already been duly noted.  Just wondering what you guys think, especially since most of you are probably not 35 year old Atari geeks.

Here's the link to the actualy poll.  Go wild. http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=74962

As a side note, the reason I'm even involved with AtariAge at all is because my brother wrote an Atari 2600 game called Go Fish! (http://www.atariage.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=309 ), and he asked me to write the music for it, which I did.  Like most Atari music, it's really annoying and repetitive, but hey, it's music on a 2600 game, and those were rare enough.  If you're really interested, you could even download the binary and play it on an emulator.  Or you could fork over $25 and get a cartridge, 5 of which go to my brother.  I get no royalties (weak).  That's all.

When i first got NES it was my brothers and i was young so unfortuantly i didn't have the money or the knowledge about all these awesome games. My favorite by far is Super Mario 3. That was the best game I owned and one of my favorite games ever.
im not so sure for me
it woudl be a hard battle against zelda1, mario3  and kid carus

Precursor
That's not even a competition.

Mega Man crushes the rest of 'em. With the possible exception of Tetris, but Tetris are better on a portable console anywyay. Tongue

Mario 3.

When I was 2yrs. old, my family bought an NES and a copy of the game. They played hour after hour everyday.....and never got past the first level. After a few months of watching them fail over and over....I decided to step in and show them how i'ts done. Needless to say, Mario 3....was beaten the next day.

P.S.- That's also how I got into gaming.
'some incredibly clever saying'
You beat Mario 3 when you were 2 years old?  Are you sure you're not stretching the truth just a little bit?

LOL. I suppose I was, but I don't really remember. I think I was like.....4 or something.

Edit: Actually, I think I was 3. Now I go back and try to play it...and I'm not NEARLY as good as I use to be. Same with most of my NES/SNES games.
Probably Mario 3, and Tetris, although, Tetris was released on other systems...
Jack of all Trades
I remember playing Mario Bros. 1 when I was around five years old and thinking the coins were pies; tasty looking pies, at that, which explained why big Mario was so fat.

But Mario 3 was so much better. I remember beating it and being amazed at myself (and I didn't know about the whistles or anything...).
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
It's possible because I'm older than most people who visit this site, I think, but The Legend of Zelda is the best NES game in my opinion.  I can understand SMB 1 or SMB 3 being many people's favorite.  I can even understand Mega Man 1, 2, or 3, for that matter.  Tetris is a good game on the NES, but certainly not great enough to be the best game.

SMB3>>LOZ>>Tertis>>Megaman.

I forgot all about LOZ, although I haven't played it all the way through since I was 10...

You had wild fantasies, just like me Cheesy

I'm not really sure what the question is here. Is it: name an NES classic you like? Or: what is your favorite NES game? I'm assuming no ports, which would make it much more difficult.

If it has to be a very famous classic: Tecmo Super Bowl. If cult classics count: River City Random. Just me: Crystalis.

And I thought it was widely considered that Dragon Warrior was superior to Final Fantasy on the NES, at least at the time and especially in the US. FF being more popular today is due to 4 and 6 coming out on SNES while Enix took an extended sabbatical. And of course DW is still more popular in Japan, where every game in both series has been released.

Look at the link I gave on the original post to the AtariAge poll.  That should clear things up.  It's a "Of the games I mentioned, which one do you like the best?" kind of thing.

Crystalis is my favorite game of all time. Smiley  If you read through the thread at AtariAge, then you'll know why I didn't include Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars, Crystalis, etc.

I think Dragon Warrior is pretty cool, but it's a bit slow.  Final Fantasy had 4 characters to begin with (which I like better), and the whole game was a lot more polished, or something.  I don't know, I just liked it a lot better.  That being said, Dragon Warrior IV is one of my favorite RPG's, but then so is Final Fantasy 5.  The main reason I included FF instead of DW is just because FF is much more popular now, at least among the unwashed masses who don't know their video games as well as they should.

Whoops, didn't clarify. Reread what I said with Dragon Warrior series on the NES and Final Fantasy series on the NES. I do agree that FF1 is better than DW1.
MGS for PS1 forever.
I only had a NES for a short period of time because parents got rid of it. Guess I played it too much. Anyway, whenever I would go to a friends house normally they would always have Mike Tyson's Punchout. I could play that game for several hours...didn't matter to me if I won or not. I never got to King Hippo.

As for final fantasy...favorite to least favorite would be FF IX, FF VII, FF V, FF X... I have yet to play FF 2/4 and I have played and beaten 3/6 and I never liked it. Oh well.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
super mario bros 1 and 3. maybe 3 a bit over 1, but i know so many glitches for smb1 that i have lots of fun with it. but smb3 has all the suits, i especially liked the frog suit.
