Hello everybody!

I'm a long time watcher (and reader) and I greatly respect SDA for basically everything that it created and creates when it comes to non-TAS speedrunning (and some runs are amazingly close). After all those years I decided to finally stand on the other side and create something : )

(I described a history of this run, if you don't want to read, just skip to >>> please : )
What can I say...
The Fallout 1 (definitely one of my 5 favourite games all-time) speedrun has become sort of a dream of mine a long time ago, about 2005-2006, when I first saw Devin's (9:19) run (earlier it was more than 10 minutes, if I recall right). I thought - yeah, I can minimally break 7 minutes when doing single segment, and having perfect luck and execution. Probably would achieve worse results. It was about 6:45 as I counted ideally. Did some runs that were about 8 minutes at that time. But that was long ago, and things changed. Much happened in my life, sadly for the worse, and I had to let go of it.

Years later... came back here. Was astounded - so many great runs... but the one that shocked me the most was Fexen's superb idea of doing a MULTI segment run. It was also great run : )

So it inspired me, the first shot I took was at the time of Fallout 3 release, but things got serious last year in ~November. Much thought was put into it, many plans, better optimization, tools to record - basically, I decided to finish the dream : )

>>>

So here I go - soon, I would like to submit a run of Fallout 1, Segmented (Multi Segment). Currently there is much going on on the Internet (when checking competition and the popular video site ; ), but there are still optimizations to be done and time to beat.

And I have to be frank, doing a run for SDA, having the chance for the upload at the archive.org, this was my idea from the very first time. Of course it's harder than just posting a video on YT, but it's a challenge : )

I stuck to the basic rules - so only the basic Fallout 1 US 1.0 version + official patch to 1.1, nothing else.
Also, no loading previously saved character - I created it from scratch.

When it came to recording, I had a great deal of problems, because from about a dozen programs I checked, only 3 kind-of worked.
Started with Growler GunCam (the one that Fexen's used) - but it suddenly stopped working at some point of time.

But thankfully I had Fraps, old version (3.2.9) - I use it to record almost everything, but it can't record the cutscenes at the end of the game, so the last segment I had to use another program ; and BSR Screen Recorder 6 - to record the last segment with cutscenes.
Thankfully I sorted this out thanks to various sites and help from people (including Fexen too).
Quality is - I'd say good, comparing to the runs I saw here or on other sites, but of course I'll send samples first.

I would like, however, to make sure about one very important thing. In Fallout 1 and 2 (methinks), there is a glitch/bug that can be used the same as the A (attack) key. It's 0 (zero) and it works in conversations, it allows us to end the talk. If the other character is agressive towards us, it will attack us after the talk nevertheless. Likewise, if the character 'bugs' us when meeting (for example, like the first mutant in front of the military base always opens the conversation upon seeing us), he will 'bug' us again. The glitch it can be used in one or two dialogues and save some substantial time.
Please let know if it's officially OK to do that, it does save a few seconds. From the point of view of original maker of the Fallout runs (Devin), he said that it's ok (stated on SDA forums here: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/another_fallout_speedrun25.html ) and it's built-in so probably it's OK, but I want to be sure. I know that almost every advanced run uses it, but your opinion is most important. Thanks in advance! : )

If it's possible, I'd like to send a technical samples of recordings and when I have the green light, submit the run itself.
I will refer to FAQ, tho if anybody could help with doing the submitting, I would be very grateful.
Must say that number of rules at some moment almost made me quit, but I hope I can count on some advice. And of course I will do my best!

Thank you! : )

Welcome aboard Cheesy

If you want to submit some "technical samples" and get an opinion on your recording quality, head over to the Tech Support board and post a quality test (https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/how_to_post_a_video_quality_test..html)
Hi there!

While I don't have experience with Fallout 1 or 2, I can try to help you with general and technical stuff.

Reading the rules and FAQ is helpful, but it a small part is also outdated, so if some point stands out to you, you could search or ask for more specification. Also knowing which rules affect you really with your specific run makes it easier to read.

Regarding the video sample, ymh posted this earlier than me. Wink
Everything regarding that can go to https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/board/tech_support.html .

I think using the 0 key in dialogs is OK, this is a basic game mechanic (/bug) that is usable by everyone playing the game without using external tools. There are worse ways to abuse a game engine. Smiley

I record my current runs with shadowplay, an nvidia capture tool, but I don't know if this is helpful to you since you need a modern nvidia graphics card and it also might have problems with old games like FO 1.

Since Fallout 1 is available on Steam with hi-res patch (you can still choose to play without it), you should be allowed to use it. Not sure about loading previously saved character, but I think it's ok in RPG games. Maybe someone else can answer that better.

As for the recording, I recommend OBS. It worked perfectly for me. It records everything on your screen and doesn't interfere with game's inputs like Fraps sometimes does (it's a known thing).

0 key trick must be allowed. It's a built-in feature. As Rob1n said, there are worse ways to abuse a game engine. For example Postal 2 has built-in warp trick. If you get stuck in level architecture, the game will automatically warp you back and sometimes forward, which can be useful in a speedrun Wink It's allowed.
