This is a rough draft only. Many improvements can be made. However, I think the route is just about optimal. Also, I realize that Exult is more than likely not expectable as a game to be ran here at SDA officially. However, it’s a lot of fun, and might be entertaining to watch for those who are familiar with the series, or those who like classic RPGs.

Seven Segments:
Running Time (part 1): 5:08
Running Time (part 2): 2:00
Running Time (part 3): 2:54
Running Time (part 4): 3:22
Running Time (part 5): 1:57
Running Time (part 6): 1:41
Running Time (part 7): 4:00
Total Running Time (parts 1-7): 21:02

General Thoughts

This is a rough draft in seven segments. It is presented as three YouTube videos for convenience. However, this game really screams for a single-segment run. Using this many segments, it’s almost too easy. Still frustrating at times, but fairly easy Cheesy

Before doing this run, I had played Ultima 7 a few times, but never really got very far. I recently started playing it again with Exult and thought, “Wow, I’d like to speed run this thing”. Apparently, Rake here on the forums got the notion of running Ultima 7 a few days before I did Tongue Anyhow, here it is.

“Ultima 7: The Black Gate” is, like most Ultima games, completely non-linear. I spent about two days researching the fastest routes through the first part of the game, only to find out later that most of it was not needed. Specifically, you never have to speak with the Time Lord, meaning that you never have to talk to the Wisps and get the Notebook.

I went with a fairly aggressive, luck-dependant strategy with regards to lock picks. Rather than getting more, I re-ran segments 2 and 3 over and over until I didn’t break my picks. And in the end, I only had 1 pick left.

Segment 1, Trinsic, Castle British, and the Rug

First, a little toilet humor. “That Guy” that I point out with the cursor looks like he’s taking a massive dump on the street (and you would too, if you had just seen what he had). Secondly, Iolo (that dude with the cross-bow) is standing directly beneath a horse’s butt (the sign). Awsome.

And now, a little RP motivation. That blacksmith done got F’ed in the A! Would you stick around to figure out who did it, or you would high-tail it back home? I’m voting for the second candidate, thank you very much.

Next I steal a gold ring and 100 gold coins from the Fellowship (the curch). They’re the bad guys anyway. Note that the gold ring is used to open Penumbra’s house in Segment 3. I also steal a hammer from the dead blacksmith’s shop, also used at Penumbra’s.

Those copy protection questions really bite. I still mess that part up about half of the time.

Next I steal an hour glass (used to access the Sphere Generator ) from a blind woman, and a spool of thread (also used at Penumbra’s House) from a poor farmer woman who’s husband has been wrongfully imprisoned for stealing apples. Ain’t life a beach sometimes?

Note to Self: Horrible country music reference, commit suicide in the morning.

Next I grab a bag of Reagents (used to cast spells), a spell book, and a bed roll from Castle British. This equipment is intended to be taken by the player. I also buy the only two spells I need in the game here, “Unlock Magic” and “Telekinesis”. Although Telekinesis is not required to finish the game, it speeds things up.

I skip the Orb of the Moons. Getting this item and using it to gate to Yew may save some time in this segment.

I finish off by grabbing the Magic Carpet.

Segment 2, Magic Carpet FTW!

This segment is the single worst one of the run. I spent almost two hours attempting to get this thing down, and this is all I came up with.

First, I head off to Rudyom’s house. Here I collect four pieces of Black Rock (used to shield Penumbra in her house) and Rudyom’s Wand. The wand is supposed to be used to destroy the Black Gate at the end of the game. Even though I skip this step, I still get the wand. This is in part out of habit, but I am also toying with the last segment to see how quickly I can pull off the “Good Ending”. Two miss-clicks here.

Next I head off to Buccaneer’s Den to grab the Black Gate key. There are three miss-clicks here. The first is on the door (tried too soon), the second my mouse pointer went clear out of the game window and onto the desktop, and the third while trying to grab the key. The reason these are in the video? It took dozens of attempts to get that damned chest open without breaking a pick.

Segment 3, Harpy of Doom and Dismay

I snag all four of the Glass Swords from Parrett Island, the ring of invisibility, and the lockpick (which, as it turns out, was needed!). Next, I go whacks-up the Stone Harpy. This is the only thing I kill during the entire run. Sometimes one glass sword will end it, other times the thing will still be alive after all for have burnt up. I use the invis ring to prevent damage during the fight.

I then snag the Ethereal Ring and another ring of invisibility from the harpy’s chamber. Two invis rings are needed for my route to work correctly, as you will see in segment 7.

Next, it’s off to Penumbra’s house. I place all the junk I’ve collected in from of the door and do my little dance. Then, I wake Penumbra up using the Orange Potion in her house. I then place the Black Rock pieces on the pedestals so she won’t flip out on me. I also take some of her sleeping powder for the next boss.

Segment 4, Deceit, a Naked Fairy, and a Crazy Man

Deceit went rather well, until I nearly killed myself on the traps on the way out. Turns out that the big red boss does not have to be killed. You can put him to sleep (either with the sleeping power or a blue potion, never tried the spell) and then use the generator cube. Rock on!

I use the invis ring in the Ambrosia caves. This really speeds things up. There is so much agro in this cave that without it, you are lock-stepping with the enemies almost the whole way. Plus, it really helps out with the Hydra. Also, you will notice that I use a kind of hidden passage to get around the magically locked door. This is what you are supposed to do, not a bug or hidden secret. Took me quite a while to figure this one out Tongue

I finish up at Nicodemus’s house. I have to eat and sleep now to regain magic points. If I didn’t eat, not only would I not regain the MP, but I would also fail casting all spells. It’s usually a race condition to cast Unlock Magic in the Ambrosia caves before I get too hungry anyway.

Segment 5, Despise and the Most Talented Blacksmith in Britannia

Despise went OK. Not great, but OK. I can’t use the invis ring here because it won’t last long enough (it’s a very long cave). I also manage to screw up the teleporter maze in the Sphere. However, never getting agro and not getting hit by the traps more than makes up the time difference.

Next, I have the blacksmith in Minoc make me the sound-proof helmets I need for the Cube Generator. He does it all without any tools or source of heat, and from twenty feet below he’s source materials! Now that’s talent.

Segment 6, The Cube Generator

Holy Christmas, this thing sucks. I made more than three dozen attempts before ending up with this. It’s a fairly clean run, and I am happy with it. I get knocked unconscious at the very end of the maze, but I’ve never be able to avoid that without casting a spell or chugging a potion (that I don’t have on this run). I suppose casting “Heal” might save some time, but then I’d have to regen enough mana to cast the required spells in the Isle of the Avatar. It’s a catch-22.

I use the invis ring on the way out to avoid agro. I suppose I could do this on the way in as well, which might save a little time.

Segment 7, The Black Gate

Well, there’s not too much to say about this segment (for it’s length anyhow). I eat some cheese out of a barrel that’s been sitting in the same room as a dead chick for God knows how long. I also put on her ahnk, because hey, I’m the Avatar baby! Er, whatever.

I use Telekinesis to flip a switch in the switch puzzle to save about 30 seconds worth of back-tracking, not to mention the terrible noise those doors make. Then I put on the invis ring to run past all the badies.

At the door that must be picked, I broke three picks leaving me with a grand total of one, which I opened the door with. This is about par for the course. Next, I use a hidden passage to by-pass a bunch of nonsense in this dungeon. Overall, this one short-cut saves a ton of time and actions. Not only do I not have to run as far, but I also don’t have to cast Dispel Field on the energy fields. Buying Dispel Field takes time, and casting it requires a lot of mana which I simply don’t have.

Note that the secret passages are visible due to the fact that I’m wearing the invisibility ring. It messes with the game’s palette. This effect is also present in the original version of U7BG (I think). Also, I just wear the invis ring until it craps out on me. No sense waiting time to take it off now.

The thrones are a bit touchy. I find myself having to click like mad to get them to work. Note that the throne surrounded by rock teleports you to different areas of the map. The teleportation is subtle. I used to take of my armor and lay it beside the throne to tell when it occurred, but I finally got to the point that I could notice it.

I nearly die to a fire field after the Throne of Virtue.

Finally, the generator pieces can be tricky to place. That’s why I take my time doing so. They can fall behind the pedestals, making it nearly impossible to pick them back up.

Yup, I just run in the gate. It’s a speed run after all! I did a stop-frame on the ending text in post-processing so people can read it. The game usually skips right by it.

Rake: I think it would be best to further discuss the planning of the run in your thread. I feel this one should only be for comments about my draft (and there shouldn’t be that many). I agree that this would help keep things together.

As I noted in the commentary, this is a rough draft only. I’ll be responding to your route questions in your thread.

Thanks for going the extra mile to watch the videos before I even posted the links Tongue

Ok so I found your youtube account and watch the three videos.  Your route planning is very good and I enjoyed your wall running to avoid the liches.  However the run didn't feel polished it is frustrating to do but making sure you don't have missed clicks and have optimal inventory management is important to me.  Another tip is in conversation hold down enter you'll see why.  I had forgotten about the key and pick hot keys they will be useful and it seems only one enemy (stone harpy) must die it may be worth finding a way to kill it with out going to the glass sword cave there may be another means on route I'll have a look in to it.  I may have some time tomorrow to do my competing run only time will tell.

Ok sorry I moved this down so your comments were a block. also you don't need to use the chest in sparks house
I'm gay, seriously.
Haha! Looks very good! There are many funny moments, like getting the meteor helmet while flying past the blacksmith. Smiley

Now you just need to practice avoiding unnecessary mouse movement. You could position your running so that you don't need to move the mouse at all to open doors. And run close to the switches before activating them to avoid the slow walk. I'm not sure, but you would probably not need to use the invicibility ring that much in a segmented run. It also looks like mark/recall might save a tiny bit of time backtracking from a few caves, but again, I'm not completely sure.

I'm very impressed already. There are many items in the game and your route used that knowledge very well. I know how free the traveling is in this game, but I'm still surprised how much you skipped.

I think you two should start competing for real (but still sharing all ideas, ofcourse) to see how low the time can get. I'm looking forward to a sub 18-minute run. Good luck! Smiley

I mainly use the invisibility ring to speed up my running. When an aggressive mob enters combat mode, the game handles a lot like a turn-based game. You are forced to lock-step with the mobiles, which slows you down a lot.

In the run as it is, there are very few times that this happens. This is because I try to keep the invis ring on when I am near aggressive mobiles. Off the top of my head (without watching the thing again), it happens when running NW of Britain to get the Magic Carpet (VERY rare), and in the caves before the cube puzzle. I'm trying to figure out how to eliminate this all together.

It might save time, but I'd really have to look into it. The problem with Mark and Recall is that you have to cast Mark at the entrance to the dungeon, and then cast Recall once you are done. That takes a lot of mana that I simply don't have, and I might have to grab extra regs as well.

On the up-shot, and extra sleep or three may well be faster than running back through the caves. At the very least I could save some decent time in Despise by doing this.

I was planning on looking into the Mark / Recall situation for the next draft of the route.

Thanks for your feedback!

Just out of curiosity, how did you cast Unlock Magic without being Level 4?
Levels don't effect what level magic you can use it is just an indication of their power you just need enough mana to cast it
What about using the cheat room?

Its in the game by default and can be accessed with ease. So technically it would be allowed according to SDA.

No, it would be immediate grounds for disqualification. Don't use "technically" if you don't know the technical details.

Currently watching.
If you want some form of discussion on the run refer to this thread:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=pcgames;action=display;num=1178443690

But pretty much it is just throwing around ideas agreeing the cheat room would make for a shit run and who the hell would want to watch it then this became a good route then discussing slight changes then gets to the point where the other fellow disappears I become to busy and relies my compy isn't recording properly and nothing more happens
The BaldurManiac
Wow the music and everything is so similar to Ultima Online... Haaa the memorys.

Well, then please quote from the rules which passage would disqualify a run using this room.
well I don't really care if it would be acceptable or not a run using the cheat room would be pretty boring, even without it the game is fairly quick and actually needs a little planning

Finally: Please don't try and outsmart us. If you are in any doubt as to whether what you're doing is fair, then discuss it. Don't spend weeks recording a demo using some dubious means and then tell us "You have to accept this because you don't specifically say it's not legal!" because we'll just say "No, we don't. Goodbye!"

There's a reason for that particular passage. Plus, if the run isn't even entertaining to the people that know and love the game, then that's a good sign not to do it.
