Before someone else makes this topic and I'm gone away and have forgotten everything I wanted I'll be the first *muahaha*

I noticed that we lost lots of time (and probably ripped the schedule badly only because of) way too long setup times, that weren't accounted for. If I skim through the schedule, most runs met their run-only estimate, but it tok waa~y to long to set up the next game, which made us loose all the time we made. I'm sure, Mike accounts for this with numerous additional times, or carefully coordinated switches; we need to take a page out of your books there …

It also might be a very good idea to not trust people to just come and go from donation and streaming stations as they wish, I vote for timetables here … might be my German blood coming through … Many times the chat complained about donation audio being much louder than game/runner audio or having to turn up the volume to the very peak … sub-optimal.

I'm not going to talk about donation tracking here, because it was such a provisional solution all over … And I want to make shoutouts to the problem solving on the streaming station, from my point of view they were as quick as possible on solving issues we had as of Saturday one a.m.

I'll add more as I think of it ^^

A retrospective usually means something that is used to look back on a past event and reflect over it. This event is still ongoing and so stuff like this is usually best kept for later.
I'll lock this for now and let any of the ludendi organizers create a topic when they feel the time is right (or ask me to unlock this)

edit: alright, open again. Fire away

First of all I totally agree with everything you said Alko.

Some of the stuff that will be better prepared for the next one (if there is one) is donation incentives and prizes for sure. Most of us were unsure if we'd have any at all and in the end the only reason we could have any was thanks to Edenals last minute donation tracker. Having these things would help bring in a lot more donations.

That we even had such a good sound setup surprised me a lot but we were still far from optimal. Since the crowd never had a mic that was meant to pick up their sound a lot of interesting questions and comments were probably not heard on stream but in reverse it also means that hopefully a lot of the useless chatter wasn't captured. Also people who had a mic sitting next to them (and not using it) were asking questions that the stream wouldn't hear and then the players would answer them. I still think we handled it pretty well for doing this the first time. Big thanks to Niss3 for all that equipment.

Sometimes the runner(s) would be really bad at doing commentary while playing (me being a good example of this) and a lot of what happened on stream was only briefly or not explained at all. To solve this I'd suggest that we always have a designated commentator that knows what needs to be explained and is familiar with the game. This can be fixed in advance by teaching each other the tricks and how they work out on stream or in videos. As a last measure one could always write down some notes for the commentator so that they at least can read those to the stream at the right point of the run.

I think for what time we had on our hands and with what we had we did really good. If this will be hosted by Ludendi again, I would hope to see it get its own forum to make it easy to structure and of course handle out different responsibility roles a lot earlier.

Yaeh, one should write down some comments for the game. I was supposed to do some commenting but it was my first time in the light of streaming so I was a bit to nervous, to do it whilst playing

You were not alone, I've been streaming casually on my own but at this kind of event I had a hard time cooping with it. A lot of games are so fast pasted that you even have to start explaining tricks in advance. Like in SotN we got 4 tricks in a matter of a minute.

On a side note, people seemed to have enjoyed your commentary anyway Smiley

Alright, let's do this!

We ran into some issues, but all in all, I think that we can consider the first European Speedsters Assembly a great success. $2600 in donations from viewers, and I'm fairly sure that with the local donations added in, we broke $3000. Not bad for our first try!

On the first day I placed myself on the same side as the streaming computer, did some commenting on the first few runs, but didn't really feel right. On the second day, however, I felt I really found my place when I set up my netbook back at the donation station, where I spent most of the marathon. I'm definitely up for being a constant part of that on future marathons!

And so, shoutouts!

First off, the locale. Lots of space. Aside from the streaming room, we had a large practice room, a designated room for sleeping, and then a massive amount of space between the practice room and the showers that was pretty much not used at all, where I found a corner to sleep in (which turned out to be very cold, but still). We could easily have fit another fifty people. No separate rooms for sleeping, though, and only two showers, which I have been led to believe would probably be the biggest issues with the venue for a number of people if we try to expand the event in the future. But it works.

One big grocery store and several restaurants within a five minute walking distance, which is always nice. No need to go hungry. Special shoutouts go to Willy's garlic bread which became my breakfast three days in a row, and Kebab House that gave people who had an attendee bracelet to show a 10 SEK discount on each meal. (though when I went to get dinner there late on Thursday, they had already closed despite the sign in their window saying they were supposed to be open for another few hours. Boo. McDonald's was the only thing still open.)

Best part about the venue for people with a long way to travel: It is literally across the street from the train station. I left ten minutes before my train was due to leave, and I still had downtime.

And so, shoutouts to actual people:

Of course, first of all, Frezy and Ludendi for being the driving force behind making it actually happen, picking up the ball after the clusterfuck that was my initial attempt at garnering interest for a European marathon ended in personal shame. But this was pretty much my vision with that. All credit to you guys.

Edenal for his amazing streaming computer setup. Fantastic stuff. And of course Neviutz who manned it for, like, all the time. I'm not sure he ever slept.

My companions back at the donation station, I believe the frequent team was Tompa, Alko, Kaiser and RoboSparkle, and of course the people who popped in to fill in when several of us were busy. Reading out all the generous donations and comments was a great time. And apparently, I can pronouce names. So there! And believe it or not, but even though I sat next to Tompa for the majority of Friday to Sunday, I have yet not found any peppers after coming back home.

Wery for bringing a table full of obscure consoles, and for being a great person to go to for some 2-player SNES funtimes. We're already planning a co-op run for ESA 2013.

All the non-Swedish runners for taking the time and money to actually come visit, especially Carc all the way from USA. I'll see you again at AGDQ!

And of course everyone there who cooperated to let this event become as awesome as it became!

Anti-shoutouts:
First, to me, for a) picking the coldest corner in the venue to sleep in and b) taking at least one less shower than I should have done. And probably for talking too much, I always talk too much and never know when to shut up so never be afraid of telling me to shut up.

Gigadeon, for being a dick.

Me again, for not healing before Unyo (Ufouria final boss).

I think that'll do for now from me!

Edit: On rewatching the part where we all said thank you and stuff, I have learned that I should not be clapping my hands while still holding the microphone. Jeeze.

Speed is all that matters.
Thanks to everyone who made this possible, Ludendi, Crippe, Frezy, and everyone else who was involved.
I had an amazing time in Sweden. It was an amazing event.

I have to agree, though, setup times were way too long for some reason. I don't even want to imagine how long it would have taken if we didn't reconstruct the whole thing on the last day before the marathon started.
I'm still glad we didn't have any major issues though, not counting the Spyro 4-man race.

Shoutouts:

Ludendi, Frezy, and Crippe for managing to get all this done. Thanks!

Edenal for his streaming setup, his last minute donation tracker, etc. I don't think we would have been able to get something streamed without you.

Niss3 for supplying us with sound equipment. RIP wireless hand mic Sad

People at the donation station, Alko, Damnitman, Tompa, Kajzer (to name a few). You guys did a great job.

Dxtr, RoboSparkle, DRsynj, and whoever else took care of the stream whenever I wasn't around (Yes I DID sleep).

Ozzy for making sure we didn't get lost after arriving in Sweden.

Jinny - I'm pretty sure the next time we will be able to wake everyone up with Kpop!

And of course everyone else who made this event as awesome as it was.

Also, not to forget the Kebap house for giving us discounts during the event.

Let's hope for a possible ESA 2013 marathon. Smiley

I know how you feel, I slept in the same area on one of the couches. It was okay when trying to sleep but after I woke up it was incredibly cold everytime.

I found extra blankets in one of the back rooms with the showers, so that helped, at least. But next time, I'll pick my sleeping spot more carefully.

I also liked the arrangement for this event and like to thank everyone for their work with it, and of course the nice people that participated in the gaming and speedruns. Lucky me I've found a luggagetruck to roll home my stuff on, it went pretty smooth to walk home from the train with it

Ozzy88: Its a pity I could'nt see all the chatcomments, it would have been interesting for me to read. I hope they saved the chatlog somewhere so that I can look at them comments later on

KennyMan666: It was nice to play through some games and I am looking forward to the upcoming co-op run, if the ludendicrew decides to put up with a new ESA next year

I'm pretty sure Nisse said that he saved all the chatlogs.

Yea, chat logs would be awesome. If Nisse doesn't have them, there's a chance that the bot might have them saved in mIRC.

Even if catastrophe strikes and ESA 2013 doesn't happen, the game in question has no run on SDA. So we have reason to do it anyway!

But if all goes as we hope and it indeed does happen, we definitely have to try to get a car for the trip. Would make everything so much easier.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
I just wanted to say that this event really did pass all expectations (including mine) and it was great seeing all of you guys game together for a great cause. I missed a lot of runs I wanted to see, but I'll probably end up seeing them in the stream archives. That is, if you guys aren't going to encode high quality copies.

I can go over what I liked and some criticism, but I know better than to criticize right now. You guys should enjoy your success. Smiley

We don't have local recordings of the footage as far as I know. (At least I was never told to record locally in addition to streaming during the marathon) So unless someone mysteriously recorded the stream in high quality the archives are probably the only thing we have.

I think we all have an idea of what we'd like improved about the event in general, but yeah, we're all still on high about it ^^ Personally it would be great to hear what you have to say though, eventually. Also; I believe all we have is the archive, the idea was to make highlights of the runs and upload them to youtube.

I'll be writing up my shoutouts later Cheesy I have lots of love to give! I have a (very) few photos I can put up too.
Speedrunner
Like i said there at the venue.

All the thanks in the world isnt enough how much i love how everyone got together and making this EASILY one of my best weeks ever.
Carcinogen, A-M, Robo, DR, Kotti, Nevi, Cyprys, Ktwo, Artic_Eagle, Alko specially for taking your time and travel to Sweden, that alone deserves appreciation (Dont know if thats the right word for it) Just give me a PM or anything if something like this i happening near you, im there!

Thank you SO much everyone! And i hope we get to see each other again in the future for some more marathons!

Pros:
The Audiosetup! Niss3 did a FANTASTIC job getting those equipment. Really made the everything more smoothly
The microphone for the runner. Neat! Easy to use and wireless!
The Streamequipment. 1 Blackmagic and 5 dazzles that worked great with the computer!
The venue. Like Dammitman said. 2 showers wasnt a problem. Since everyone wasnt awake at the same time, practicing, streaming. And all that room we had!! We couldnt have chosen a better place here in Sweden i think.
The marathon itself!

Cons:
Estimates. I think this was the main concern during our marathon combined with setup times. BUT, we mainly got behind because of the bluescreens. So im sure we would have been on par with the schedules if the computer would have cooperated.
Stationschedules. I think Nevi didnt sleep at all, and i know he needed it. And it could have also been because it was mainly Nevi who knew how Xsplit worked. Xsplit isnt so bad, so everyone could have easily managed it.

Future ideas:
Recording? I know everything is recorded and saved on twitch in 720p. So i dont know if this is needed.
MORE WIRELESS MICS!
More consoles stationed in the streamingroom so the setuptime wont be so long. We often got our own equipment from the practiceroom when it was our turn to play.

Other than that?

I give this marathon a whooping 100/100. Yes, im that happy about this! Love you all!
This event was soooo good.
The place was easy to find and the organisation was excellent : large practice room, a room dedicated to sleep, showers, free internet access, etc...
The atmosphere was great, it's a real pleasure to see a such friendly community.
Thanks to everybody and I hope to see you again soon!

I'm with most of you guys on scheduling "work" so to speak. At the very least there should be a list of designated people to manning the stream and mod/read donations where the guys who are at that station could easily look each other up for changing shifts (with reservation for people that have runs the next day for sleep and practise). If we're 20+ at the venue it shouldn't be a problem anyway, I think people were just a little bit reluctant to take that responsibility if they saw everything was going fine and didn't want to disturb.

Personally I think all the estimates and such were fine. The only runs I saw that took longer than their estimates was James Pond 1 and some run by Frezy iirc. It was the change in setup that took all the time. Plugging in consoles, only a few select knowing how to plug everything in, glitches and software problems, crashes, even not knowing passwords could be a problem. I would suggest that everyone who volunteers to sit and manage the stream tell so in beforehand and then is shown the day before the streaming starts how everything works, at least in a nutshell. Just stuff like "this is how you change region, this is how you capture regions and add cameras, this is how you crop, this is where you plug everything in..." and all that necessary stuff. Then also putting a note with all the important passwords on the computer in case of e.g. a crash were you'd have to log back in to the computer/twitch/xsplit or whatever.

I do hope you saved the chatlogs, I thought at least most of them disappeared after the BSoD but I know me and Dalfen would like to read a few of the chat logs so keep me updated :)!
meh
I don't really know if I can add anything to this than what has already been said. This event was one of the greatest things I've experienced, and it was such an honor to have all of you visit us and SDA for helping us with this.
I guess the only thing I can add to the "what we could have done better" list is: We should have done a lot more testing with the 4 dazzles before the marathon start. That way we could probably have prevented the BSoD problem. But all of you who helped solve the problem during the stream did an awesome job at fixing.

And Mike, just as DRsynj I'm also interested in hearing all your thoughts about the marathon, so that we can make it even better for the future.

I'll probably update this post later with more shout outs and "what went wrong..." etc.
Hockey enthusiast
I'm probably going to come of badly because of what I'm going to say. But that's something I've got to live with.

First of all, no one expected this event to be nearly as successful as it was. My deepest thanks to everyone involved! And right now, I don't want to hear any criticism at all. Everyone participating did whatever stood in their power to make this week as good as it could get for everyone. If anyone thinks otherwise, then I would say they've got their head up somewhere the sun does not shine... And let's just leave it at that, bask in the glory of being a part of a fun, rewarding and successful speedrun marathon.

However criticism is good. But this was a one time event, with very limited resources, time and people. There might or might not be an ESA2013, and now is not the time to either discuss or plan a potential return. Thought, I implore everyone to share their experiences in the form of: "When hosting a similar event, think of this and that". Not in the way of: "This went wrong...".  I hope you see the difference.

^ This.

To conclude my rant there's so much that I would like to say to each and everyone involved. But to keep it short:
I left my family back home for a week, and I found a new one in Skövde. Thank you!

before the marathon, i was very skeptical about it, but i was blown away over how good it was.
stream setup was excellent, audio setup was superb (but yeah maybe a mic for commentator next time)...

theres not alot more to say, just, great job! if you guys host this another time, the chances of me going are alot bigger.

edit: here are some irc logs http://lambdan.com/irc_logs_ludendi/
took me a while until i figured i should join the channel on my irc client, so part of the first day is missing and it also has join/quit messages, until i realized i need to shut them off (after 08-16|21:34:36 its good). but i guess these are good for people that want something to read until there are some better logs. times are in whatever time zone sweden is in.
I was going to make a long post talking about things but after reading this thread, I feel like there's no reason to add anything at this point. This was an incredible event and everyone helping make it happen deserves a huge thanks.

I agree with most of what is posted in here. I am so glad that the event got so succesful and people was so interested of taking part in the event.
Planning could have been better, more serious, specially when poeple from all over Europe, even US arrives. Thanks to that everyone helped out, good venues and a great community with people knowing eachother we could make it to such a success! Smiley
