I am thinking of starting to speedrun and have a NES game chosen as my first run. But I am stuck finding a capture card which would work best with it or my SNES. The other issue I have is I am a big Linux user and so that may limit some options. It also limits the use of LiveSplit, are there other alternatives? I do have a Windows machine but switch between the two often.

Thanks in advance!

Seems like something you might be able to just Google, because it's just not super likely anyone with experience would hang around these forums so frequently.
LiveSplit looks like it's written in DotNet, so can't you run it with Mono?
Otherwise you could also use Llanfair, which is written in Java: https://github.com/xunkar/llanfair
I don't know much about using video cards on Linux, but if you ever want to record a PC run you could use simplescreenrecorder. I've used it a few times to record gameplay on Linux.
Encoding NES runs is probably the easiest using Yua.
