I bet many of you have already thought of this, but as it could cut quite some time from the e3m5 ER and NR, I belive it's worth reconsidering.

The idea is to jump through the trigger that opens a wind tunnel just like on tRR, but instead of using granades, one'd have to jump from the door frame nearby boosted by some monster. You have a death knight down there and a scrag (only on nightmare).

http://www.freewebs.com/supimpaquake/e3m5%5Ftrick.dz Here you'll find a demo of me making it on hfr 0.0025 using two dk spikes, a similar demo using only one spike (but I don't reach the trigger), two miserable attempts at hfr 0 from the beginning (to show how to get in position) and the saved game I used for practising. All on easy skill.

I only managed to reach the trigger twice, the first one I wasn't recording. I guess the next step is to do the trick at full speed (using a saved game first), if someone did this, then the improvement is definetly possible. However, it's obviously very difficult and boring, getting such a trick in an actual demo would be really impresive though.

There are also some alternatives concerning ogre granade jumps, fiend pushs and slope jumps, but I can't think of any practical solution.

Hope someone will be able to do something useful with this Tongue
Thread title:
These demos kind of look like one of those trick demos I made a long time ago. If you were to use a fiend, I guess the idea would be to do a double jump on a slope, turn around, and have it hit you as you are still moving upwards. You could also jump on top of the air tunnel, and have a fiend boost you upwards, a la Peter Horvath's easy run of E2M2.
There's plenty stuff to work on there indeed, but no combination seems too practical (as in something you know exactly what to do, not just goofing around waiting for a good situation to pop up).

For some reason fiends won't jump on you when you're on top of the wind tunnel (or on top of an ogre or fiend or deathknight). A good alternative would be an ogre granade jump to fiend boost as in Ken's recent pb1 ER, but I'm not sure it gives enough height. Then there's an ogj to double fiend boost, like on Ilkka's famous e1m4 NR, this should probably work, but I have no idea how to arrange such thing. Or perhaps making it a double or triple ogj + one fiend. You can also play with the little slope, but it's so far from the trigger that it would need too many boosts, I actually don't know how powerful a double jump can be from there.

The thing is, I'm just speculating, you're the one that did those great 100 tricks, you should know it better Smiley
Nice!

Sounds like you can get 0:41 from the Death Knight's boost in your demos.
Wow, I love to see how you guys are still finding new tricks and ways to improve the always played ID maps!!

Personally, I'm a strange runner in this aspect, because I'm too lazy.. for example, I don't think I've ever played e3m5, except several years ago when I was playing to break Marlos ee3_916 (which I did break, but Martin got 8:42 before I submitted my crappy marathon). There are some ID maps that I've never played from scratch, or made 100%'s on. Heh, it's guys like you who spend a lot of time playing the maps that end up finding the cool tricks!! Smiley

Watch out for the|navigator, that guy has Horvath-like persistance, he'll surprise us all with a demo one of these days.

GinKo: you're very fast, keep up the good work! :-)
MarioKart64.com biotch!
i was able to cut 8 seconds with this glitch. vid up soon.
Hey Ho Let's Go
Good thinking GinKo! I'm eager to see if anyone is actually going to attempt this! Mathias...?  Smiley
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
oh,idea
Darn, have we really reached the point where people wont even attempt to break records when a new shortcut is found in an ORIGINAL ID map? Sad...

I will soon have a computer at home again, been living without one for quite a few months now (I'm online at work anyways).. maybe I can get back in shape and break a couple of records. I kinda miss playing, although not much, since I never really played much, except when trying to break a record. Still a few ID records I always had in mind to beat... just need to get motivated, but nowdays I find my time to be so precious, it's almost like I always have something to do and can't afford to sit in a computer, let alone for the time required to beat ID demos. I guess everyone has the same problem since not many demos are being made? Or did the other runners move to another game? I haven't played another game since probably the 90's, heh heh. Hope everyone's doing well, just felt like checking in.
Hey there  Cheesy As most of us resort to Quake in our free time to combat boredom, the lack of activity may actually be a sign that ppl are having a good time or doing something with their lifes (see that Amrik thing there?). Hope it's that and not the moving to other games thing. My exams to enter uiversity are finally over, so I should have some time to play now.

About e3m5, well, it's not like the improvement is easy and we don't get it due to lazyness. As I stated before in this thread, I'm sure it's possible, but the chances are like that of a blind monkey typing Romeo and Juliet by randomly hitting a typewriter, at least until someone comes up with a way to make it more feasible.

My plan was:
1. do it in hfr
2. record the trick using saved games but no hfr
3. find a way to set it up easily
4. start trying the run until it happens Smiley
I got the first item, if you could do some progress, I'd appreciate. Actually, I'd be happy just to watch any Arturo-08 demo Smiley
18 to the diablo2 holy grail
The number of runners left who can perform such wizardry is probably low and not getting rejuvinated much.  After all Quake will be 12 this year!  Most of the players who started were teens/20s/morfys.  How many lil kiddies who were 5 when quake came out will put down their xbox360/ps3/crysis etc for quake?

I hope that there will be a pick up in ways that bands like the Doors sell more today than they did when they were all together and touring.
¡
it sure is a cool trick
Are you talking about a No rocket/No grenade run? If yes, can you send me the full video? I attempted to do the E1 without explosive and it was very fun  Cheesy
Its sad that quake is such and old game. If quake would have been released a couple of years later I am sure it would have been a huge thing. Look at CS nowadays. teenagers play it because they dont know any better, they dont know quake Smiley People will say its a matter of taste which one is better, and that CS can be argued to be a better game. Well, It's not even a matter of opinion, Quake IS a better game. End of discussion Smiley Number of people playing Quake is going down all the time because basically no new quakers appear anymore. There are quite a few hardcore fans still playing it, but these hardcore quakers are "old" already. Many of us have grown up playing the game we love, and even though most of us are adults already we still sometimes find the time to play. I know I do, always on christmas when I have a lot of free time I pick up Quake again and play some (I mean quakeworld now, but also some speedrunning every now and then). My brothers and a couple of my closest friends also used to play quake, and they also play sometimes during holidays.. We joke around about dueling eachohters when we are 50.. Who knows, it just may happen since I really havent found a better game than quake, and I doubt I ever will. Games nowadays are way too realistic.. The amazing controls quake has makes it so great. Not at all realistic but a lot of skill is neede to control quake dude masterfully. What a great game we have here!

Totally offtopic, but Timinators response made me think of this for whatever reason..
