Intrested Quake Player Striving to be Recognized
This is mostly a question, if possible i dont know how much time this can save. Prolly 1 second tops.

In the e1m3 record demo, and prolly in the old records, the player performs a beautiful trick at the end, crushing a zombie in the door and allowing access to the teleporter saving god knows how much time.

I ran the map a few times, before watching the record demo and had the exact run with obviously less ornate moves.  The only part that I had different was the ending.  I thought about the zombie trick but never felt like waiting so long.  I made a demo, simply getting to the end in a simple, but fast fashion, and didnt feel like waiting for the zombie.  Now comes my suggestion.

[glb]e1m3 easy run suggestion:[/glb]
Simple anyalisis.  Enter the Large elevator room (having killed/left alone the zombies does not matter) Toss up a greande, wait, push the button and take a SCREAMING BOOST off your greande before those hectic bars trap you in the room.  (I have attempted 3 times, you might get crushed, I havent been able to pull it off, to me it looks doable).

Expert strategy: Shoot a greande before entering the room.  Grabbing the 2 health packs across from the button, perform a dazzling move, and escaping hurt 40-50 damage which you just gained from the health packs.

I only bring this suggestion up becuase of a few things.  I was wondering if there is a program, or some possible way, to start near this positiion in the map with approximate health and try this trick repeatedly, rather than runnign through the map to this point 200 times and failing everysingle one before diagnosing it as immpossible.  I for one belive that if you kill the zombies, and do this trick it will be faster.  That rests mainly if the trick is possible.

Please tell me if i am annoying people with my suggestions!! I only wanna learn some of this stuff and get some aid from experienced players but I have posted about 5 of the last 10 and can find that this could start annoying regular forum goers.

Thanks again in advance for helping me out!

Hell is where the heart is.
The grenade boost back from the button before the bars close certainly does look doable. And some of the greatest players ever have tried relentlessly to make it work. But as far as I know no one has ever succeeded even once.

But on a modern PC with a very high framerate and the bunny/boost speed that gives you who knows. Maybe it is possible. WAAAAAY out of my league though.  :-)

The problem is the button, it takes some force to trigger, and that means you'll have to be moving against it (and you'll still be moving against it when the bars start to close), so as far as I know, the only force that can get you past the bars is a quadded rocketjump, which is of course undoable in this map.

The other problem is that there's actually a clipbrush or something in the middle of the door. Try this: go inside the room, but dont trigger the bars. Try to jump out of the room. In the middle of the door, you'll hit an invisible barrier. This means you'd have to move at very high speed _along the floor_ to get through. As far as I can tell at least. Maybe the clipbrush is gone when the barriers close, but I doubt it.
yuck fou
bogo: when it comes to starting at near that position with the right health etc...get to the position you want to be in, make sure you have the right health etc.
Then bring down the console and type 'save <save_name>' i.e. 'save test'.
Then you can do 'load test' which will start you off with what stats you had and in the same position.

Thanks a ton guys.  I wanna try that test stuff.

Here is my plan.  When i watched the e1m1 record in real slow motion he made it through the FIRST door perfectly without hitting the sides.

My idea is something along that line, go right through the center before they close.

Thanks a billion for the saveing.  i completely forgot about that.

Somone tell me some servers!!!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
dunno bout any servers "over there", but get online on irc and talk to guys like Optic or Evan.

Server: Quakenet (find a local server at: www.quakenet.org)
Channel: #qdq
you cant even reach the spot to crush yourself by the bars, as Ripah said quadded RJ would be needed, plus lotsa health plus a quad and a rocket hehehe Smiley
so do it if you can... in your dream
Mumma
There are actually demos of this trick over at ill mind moves. Only problem is that they are a bit cheated, using godmode and quad =)

Take a look at this page! http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~nagasaki/illmind.pl?cat:q1:egg

as you continue to attempt your strategy take note of the door's dead-centre, that is, take note of where the bars close and the lower door (or whatever) come into contact. once you find the dead-centre always aim for that to get throught w/o a scratch.

i find there's a great deal of difficulty getting through the door in the first-place since the lower door moves upwards, consequently you have to jump [glb]just[/glb] high enuff to clear it, but then low enuff to clear the bars. is the quake-guy small enuff to get through such a tight space, by the way??

considering the zombie-lure and the scrag-door-stopper tricks i have doubt you'll survive if you dont get through the door clean enuff. you could end-up the door stopper if that's so! anyway, just an idea to keep in mind.

i reckon it would take 2 grenades to clear the weird door fast enough, one at the switch and one just before it.

this same goes as people get better running e1m1 cuz you have to know where the door opens and bunny for that to fly right through w/o slowing down or you're stopped.

i like your ideas and suggestions. you have to be a smart-ass about what you see to forward such ideas. it gets other people thinking. good stuff  Grin
sshplur, I'm afraid it's not possible unless you, like you said, use two grenades. even then it's trivial. two grenades can only be possible if you somehow get a zombie in there to grenade jump off, meaning it would take even longer than the conventional method. :p
it's hard to do and i reckon a quadded rocket will only do. it shaves off about 6 seconds if it is though, but only by cheating.

i tried with 2 grenades and even 3 at one point, but it's proven a waste of time; you could take longer than the zombie lure, though it really shouldn't. i dunno, it begs the question 'should the YA be taken from e1m2 for this move??'. it prob make 0 time difference.

from the moment you enter the elevator the zombie lure takes at least 8 seconds or 10 seconds, tops. so if it's done with one grenade you saved 4+ seconds since grenades take bout 3+(??) seconds to blow up. bah

other than that, i'll settle with grenade pushing off the zombies at the beginning to get to the door faster. it's not terribly time saving but good enough.

Is it possible to catch the doors on the aerborne grenade itself? Do grenades have the right object type to bounce the doors back open? Anyway, this'd have to be one hell of a shot Smiley
I'm addicted to games
Nope. Grenades and other weapons are point objects. Moving doors and platforms are only blocked by box objects.
Don't think!  feeeeeal
You can do that by droping ammo in q2 if I'm not mistaken.

You can drop backpacks in TeamFortress, but they are SOLID_TRIGGER, and probably won't work either. Roll Eyes

Spider-Waffle, you might want to log onto the IRC channel to ask these kind of things, as you can get a near immediate answer that way. And seeing as you posted in three different topics here, it might stop reviving dead posts with things that can be put to rest. Smiley
