DS Dictator
Maybe but my experience with Capture Devices is low, I use a DVD recorder to film my runs even DS videos now (by connecting the camera to the TV and do it that way, it's more reliable than DV tapes because those can sometimes gets chewed up and of course damages the video quality around the chewed area).

Today I got my new DSi early this morning.

* The D-Pad is less loose than the Lite and when you press a direction it has that clicking sound.
So it's basically half DS phat and half DS Lite on the D-pad.

* The start and select buttons are in the same position with the DS Lite but the buttons themselves are a lot shorter (making it easier if you want to pause or soft reset).

* The shoulder buttons (L & R) are a bit thicker than the DS Lite and even shows the Camera icon next to the letter now.

* The action buttons are similar to the DS Lite but they click when you press them now.

* The volume is no longer a slider instead it's 2 seperate buttons now (like TV remotes and the PSP).

* The power button is in a different position again this time underneath the D-Pad and tapping the button takes you to the DSi Home menu.

* The previous 2 DS Models forces you to shutdown the system when exiting Pictochat and DS Local Download play options, this Model asks you to go to the DSi Menu (less annoying).

Edit: Using the DSi to type this up, it has a free internet application from the DSi shop (better value than the ones used for both Phat & Lite).
Not enough memory to load up Facebook's main page (login screen works ok).

1000 Free Nintendo points due to being part of the welcome promotion.

Edit 2: Got an 2 GB SD card and a USB SD Card reader today, transferring AAC music files was easy and the music player is pretty cool. The music animations (the ones you see on Windows Media player) is awesome,
it features 2 cameos from Nintendo games, one is from Excitebike where the hill shapes varies along the music and Super Mario Bros where Lakitu places the coin every in every beat, Mario keeps on running along and you can press L/R to make him jump and collect the coins. Eventually if you leave it alone the DSi does Mario's jumps itself and eventually you can get to play as Luigi. Think of it like Audiosurf but better and more Nintendo like Cheesy

Edit 3: For those who wants to see the microchips and boards of the DSi, click on the link below.

A small bump:

CloneCharizardX was nice enough with the list of parts needed to make the device.

Main Board: ($109.00)

USB Accessory Board: ($49.99)

Hirose FX2 Socket Connector ($9.99)

But we still need instructions  Sad
Fucking Weeaboo
Like that's anything new.  I picked out those 3 items way back in the 2nd post, plus a 4th he didn't mention (because it probably only related to the original version of the product).
Yep.
One thing though, something like this would never be legal to use on SDA, right? It's an unofficial emulator, sort of, isn't it? I mean it'd be good for demo videos and such if you're willing to pay an extra $200 or so to do that, but it doesn't really have significance here, right?
Fucking Weeaboo
It's not an emulator - it's a hardware hack.  It's allowed per the "Game Gear Clause", since there's no official way to output video.

The only other way is to point a camera at the thing, and that's a pain in the rear option.
DS Dictator
You might have heard the IS-NITRO-CAPTURE device  (IS stands for Intelligent Systems and NITRO was the prototype name).

I saw a video very recently, you get to see the connections (outputs) and the inside of the device. Unfortunatley there isn't any footage of the user trying it out on a TV :(.

(At around 1:40) He says that you can put both DS screens on 1 TV and it displays it side by side.

I've seen similar technology like this around Late October 2009 when trying out NSMB Wii. So I have high hopes that you can see gameplay from both the DS system and the Monitor.

Fucking Weeaboo
That thing looks awesome.  Too bad I'm sure none of us here will ever acquire one.  It's also interesting to see that it uses a GCN power supply to power the unit.

And from what I understand, yes you can output the same connection to two different TVs or a TV and a monitor.  Or a TV and a DVD recorder. Tongue

Maybe if somebody found one for sale we could get a bunch of people who want to do DS speed runs to chip in and buy it?  Just a thought.

That video is of one of the versions of Nitro (DS Phat), so the NITRO in this video is outdated.  On the back of the NITRO in the vid, he didn't really talk much about the 1-8 switches.  These control the video options, as well as turning on/off WiFi.  These options can't be toggled on-the-fly when the system is in use, though.  It must be powered off first.  Also, while plugged in, pressing the POWER button on the DS only resets the system, to power off you have to flip the switch on the NITRO unit.

If you're curious as to how videos look when running off NITRO, check out any DS video from any major site.  If you mean how it looks running on a TV screen, I can say that it blows up the image so it is blurrier and the colors look slightly washed out, but it somehow looks like it is running at 60fps on HDTVs, whereas games look crisper and colors are more saturated on the native DS screens.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I want to add something.
I'm one of the people to have the DS Capture Device.
I brought it from Buoysel (Filb.de Administrator, to be accurate).
It was his second device.

Here's my article about it:
http://www.yamihoshi.nl/tech/?p=909

Short video of the works of the device:

The cord KkahluaHero was asking for, is nothing more than a Line-In cable, to record crystal clear sound.
The USB cable sends screen output to a viewer App.
You'll need HyperCam to record footage from either the viewer App, and the Line-In cable.

If you have more questions, email, MSN, or GTalk me.
I respond to my emails instantly, for the most of the time (exceptions include: Being in another country, at night, while eating, at the toilet, and/or during a real-life conversation).

Hey YamiHoshi.nl, welcome to SDA and thank you for sharing us the information.  The more we know, the better.

The biggest worrying case is that DS emulators (NO$GBA, Desmume) have a similar display app making it hard to verify, other than graphical plugin and the options you get on the app (File, Tools, Options, Help, etc).

It was easy to verify GB, GBC, GBA games because they have boarders when playing the game (Super Game Boy, special Pokemon backgrounds or the Z=Options tab on GB Player).

I couldn't remember if the PSP's Remotejoylite was a similar case (showing the game on PC and using a On-screen cam to record it).

I'll edit this post more if I can think of any more ideas ;).

No, we don't use that kind of menu's, but by right-clicking the App's title bar, you can resize the App, enable/disable the borders, and some exit options.
We didn't add any more options, since HyperCam and Print Screen work like a charm.

The backgrounds like a DSi, or any other background, like these:

These are made possible, using VirtualDub and AviSight (I don't know how it's exactly called, since I'm currently not home).
But I didn't make mine, not the hardware, nor the software, I brought them for € 300,- from Buoysel.
And since we're both in the EU, it was easy for us to buy/send/receive.
I'll ask him later about the App, if he agrees, I'll share the source code of the App.
Drivers are closed-source, but you'll not able to use none of them without the hardware.

I'm ok with this kind of script but I haven't had any experience of adding a background or adding panning techniques* (like your first video posted on here).

*Although I can do it on Adobe Premiere Pro 7 because it's easier to follow and work out but the quailty is notably different.

300 euros sounds pricey but when you compare it to the IS-NITRO-CAPTURE Device which is apparently $3000, it sounds like a pretty good alternate (you could say I'm interested into buy one *whenever Buoysel wants to sell one. but don't force him* Wink )

My biggest concern for my PC is that it runs slowly when using Desmume (for Tools Assisted Speed runs) that it might run slowly when using the homemade DS capture device.

The only reason he wanted to sell one, is because he wanted to use the second one for Multiplayer, but didn't use it anyway.
About PC specs:
Laptop:
AMD Athlon X2 QL-62, 2,00 GHz.
3 GB RAM.
ATI HD Radeon 3200.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS + Windows 7 Ultimate*.

iMac:
Intel Core 2 Duo, 3,06 GHz.
4 GB RAM.
nVidia... I never knew that part.
Mac OS X 10.6.5 Snow Leopard + Windows XP Pro SP3*.

On my laptop, the sound is clearer, goes around 31-36 FPS, but video's go out of sync.
On my iMac, the sound is unclear, sticks at 11-14 FPS, but the synchronisation between sound and video is perfect.

I wouldn't worry about PC specs.

Ah I see, fair enough. For the modder's case, it would be annoying to mod another DS once in a while.
Thanks for the response :).

Fucking Weeaboo
For those that remember the Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin verification run that was rejected recently, there was a page linked by Mike to a blog post about a DS video out mod used in order to make that video.  I got that page, along with the Chameleon USB FX2 board page linked from that blog post translated by somebody who does professional Japanese to English translation.  He sent a translation of those two webpages back to me.  I'm attaching the document to this post.  I 7-zipped it so it would be a bit smaller.  It's in Word DOC format (initially it was in DOCX format, but I saved it as a DOC to avoid that stupid hassle).

I've also downloaded the video if anybody wants it.  I'll try to upload it to Mediafire or something to share with others.

I was wondering, so I downloaded.
But, I can't extract it:

I thought to build a 3DS or DSi version of the DS Capture Device, but I only need to know one thing: What to mod from the inside.
I have all the other stuff.

It doesn't for me, but I'll try to open it in Linux.
If you give me a minute, I'll see I can open it, or not.

Update:
Opened successfully in Linux Mint, and kinda looked at some pictures.
It's totally different from my DS Capture Device.
I mainly use components from Digilent, while these people use something else.
But still a good alternative, since the USB 2 Module is discontinued.
Before I brought it, I asked them to restock them, told them what I wanted to do with, they were really impressed, but still didn't restock it.
uncompressed version. on a mac i used the unarchiver to extract it.

Good thing somebody understands Mac around here.

The setup actually is kinda nice, since it does allow for you to remove the device from the DS almost entirely, so if you want to pack up the system or just play it without the attachment, you can.

The thing I do need to figure out to truly make the plan for what I want complete is to find out the pinouts for the buttons.  I have a layout for the DS Lite, but not for the Phat.  It should be easy to figure out, just need to find a picture of the circuit board.

Update: I found a better pinout image of what pins to use for the video out on a DS Phat.

I'm also including a image of the controller pinouts for the DS Lite and the DS Phat.  The DS Lite was taken from a blog where somebody made a controller add-on allowing to play the DS Lite with an NES Controller (the blog is now down).  Using that info, I found the same pinouts on the DS Phat and marked them on an image of the board.  Some of the pinouts will be a REAL pain to work with, since they're all really close to the actual buttons themselves, unlike the DS Lite, which are spaced away from them.

Edit: I found the blog again - it's just now hosted on another site.  http://parkerbowab.com/nes-controller-for-ds-lite/
Edit 2: Found the Chameleon USB FX2 Board kit for sale.  It's 4980 Yen (about $59).  http://optimize.ath.cx/shopv2_2/chuumon.html#cusb2

is there a pic showing the DS lite's pinouts for the TV out mod? i don't want to mess around with my DSPhat since i already opened the DS lite and kinda fucked it a bit so i'm more willing to experiment on it instead.

I've been trying to figure out the pinouts for a DS Lite, but the pinouts for a DS Lite video connection is completely different.  I haven't seen any LS or LDR pins on there.

My only guess right now rough following the connections seem to lead to connections on the back side of the system, unlike the DS Phat, where they're on the front.  I'll continue to investigate.  The P3 and P4 connections are where the screens get connected to.

Bumping again.
I made a site in the morning, stating all the parts needed for this to make, what it is, and what it does.
http://www.yhnitro.net

As you can see, I renamed my DS Capture Device to YH-NITRO-CAPTURE, which is based on the official one (IS-NITRO-CAPTURE).
What's the difference?
While IS means "Intelligent Systems", YH means "YamiHoshi".
I'll make photo's of it later today, but I only need some information and photo's of how to mod the DS (it's in the document, stated earlier, so that wouldn't be a problem, I think).

It's a simple site, which I made in 20 minutes (including all the text), more suggestions are welcome.
Fucking Weeaboo
Too bad you're using components that you can't get anymore.  Also, if you can figure out video pinouts for a DS Lite and make it work with that DS Phat mod I posted earlier, easy bounty money for you.

>>Sir VG
Only 1 component is really not available, and that's the USB 2 Module, the DS can be obtained through eBay.
But I can't do any research on my DS Lite, until I get a 3DS.
Just calculate how old this device is, every component was available back then.
