Perhaps my favorite game growing up was Crusader of Centy, a Genesis action-adventure produced by Atlus. But that's beside the point. I saw a part of a "speed run" that I felt was unacceptable. So I started working on a run myself. I'm currently in the research stage: having beaten it twice in the past three days I have a good idea of the route I'm taking.
In Rafflesia School, 10 malins can be farmed from the very beginning of the course before leaving. By doing this twice you can buy the sword throw skill without going through the course itself. The only thing the bronze medal does is lead up to the optional holy sword, which does double damage. Bosses have little HP to begin with, so I never visit the school again.
The stormy area of Anemone Beach typically requires you to jump with the wind, but you can easily do a long jump by sliding over the edge briefly. Also, I'm not sure of the physics of this, but if you get hit by a monster and get knocked into a hole in the floor, you might end up jumping out at great speeds (not great enough to break boundaries, but it's a quick way to get around if you do it right.)
The icy floors of Freesia have weird physics that can be handled, and exploited, by jumping like a grasshopper everywhere you go.
You need 20 malins to challenge the cheetah in Lily to a race. A while after that, you need 50 malins to get "vital info" from a flower so you can enter the past. I can collect two money bags (30 malins each) and assume that I'll pick up another 10 on the way. The two bags in question are also very close to the normal route: one near the end of Burn Daisy (est. 2 seconds) and the other in the spike floor of Camellia Desert (est. 3 seconds.)
For most bosses, simply throwing your sword at them with the right timing is all that's necessary. Maldra, easily the most annoying boss, can be killed in one attack run if done right, using the Chilly + Inferno combo. Most bosses after him should be killed using Dodo + Inferno, which, I believe, does the most damage in the game; it's equal to Moa + Inferno, Moa + Chilly, and Dodo + Chilly, but has the least chance of frame slowdown because the Moa attacks seem to go everywhere. The only exception is the Baron at Anemone Beach, since Moa + Inferno helps to do area damage to all his parts.
I don't know the game inside and out so to speak, so I don't know if more parts of the game, other than the Rafflesia School and obtaining Wong, can be skipped. I still feel that this game didn't get enough attention, and I might as well do something with my speedrun interest other than watch them. It will take some time before I can reclaim my Genesis and game from my parents' house, so I've been practicing on an emulator for now (and no, it's legal because I own a real copy.) If anyone wants to see a preliminary run or anything of the sort, I can take a recording off of Gens.
Feedback is very welcome!
