Hello all,

Update 1/26/15 - Current Billboard% completed single segment 0:56:28. This video contains commentary with very low game sound which helps to avoid youtube's flagging of the game's soundtrack.

I'm a huge fan of Burnout Paradise, and I wanted to put together a speedrun for it. While one can do a run where you just complete all events (license run), it's a bit repetitive.  The only run I've see for all licenses is  Missingyew's 3:09:13 for the burnout license.

I think there are more interesting ways to run this game than just doing the events. Billboards, gates, and jumps offer a fun way to speedrun this game.

Possible Categories:
120 Billboards - Break all billboards
400 Gate broken - Break all gates
50 Super Jumps - Successfully land all super jumps
120/400/50  All jumps, gates, billboards
Any% License - Get a burnout license
All License run - Get a Burnout Elite license
Road Rules % - Suggested by Elgranjerry. This could be broken into Timed Rule and Showtime Rule. Showtimes are MUCH slower than normal Road Rules. I think a well designed route would be AWESOME for timed rules.
100% All licenses, jumps, gates, billboards, road rules, car's unlocked (no thanks!)

The Billboard% run has been fun so far. I'm sure there is room for improvement on the route. Getting the first 72 boards on the city side of the map can be done in under 35 minutes, but the remaining 48 are scattered around the mountains in fairly annoying patterns. To add one more wrinkle, it is impossible to get one of the boards without getting an upgraded car. This requires winning at least 5 events. I've implemented 5 stunt runs into the route and the needed car (Hunter Vegas) needs to be taken down prior to hitting the mountains. This does introduce a bit of RNG, but it's not bad.

I'm hoping to find other interested runners, and perhaps race this format sometime Cheesy

Anyone see other runs of this game? I haven't seen any groups attempting to speedrun this particular game.

I've been practicing the first portion of the route (Boards 1 to 78 out of 120). I make a few mistakes by trying to narrate + play, but oh well Smiley

Now that I have a few save files for different segments of the run (basically city side/mountain side), I'll be creating another video that shows boards 73-120. Then I'll make a single segment run. I'm guessing the run will take 1:10 - 1:20. In my early practice runs, I was just able to hit them all in 1:20 game time. I'll have a real time number to go along with that soon.

Here's the conclusion of the route (boards 73-120). The next video I upload will be a single segment run. I think 1:15 minutes might be a good starting estimate, but I bet 5 minutes or more could be shaved off as I become more comfortable with the route. If I have a 0 unintended crash route (some crashes speed things up a lot), it might get even faster. At the end of the video, I show off the car you earn for completing the achievement. You are definitely not intended to have something THAT powerful so early!

Single Segment run complete. 1:05:20 starting from fade in after car selection (when I'm able to open the menu and configure stuff!)

Here's the giant ugly route as well, for any interested parties (attached png file).

When the lines overlap, I try to use different colors. The big yellow dots show were the 7 stunt runs are (2 are done twice). The other stunt runs are optional if you fail one, or just need the boost for the final section. The run starts at the top right of the map!

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Not bad. The route looks pretty good.
Hey, just restart to play this game again today. I don't know if I want to try speedrun the 120 billboard, because I probably doesn't have the patience, but I may try to help you on few things. For example the " If someone can figure out how to get the western Marina billboard in the mountain area using the Hunter Cavalry", but I don't really remember the location of everything, can you give me the billboards number relative to your map, I will see what I can do.
The billboards in question is #93 in my run.

In the single segment video, you can see my get it with the Ikusa GT at 51:00 into the video. The jump requires really high speed, but otherwise there is nothing technical about it!

Ok, I tried a lot of things with Marina but it was failure. I try to take a lot of speed on a road going down but I was still going to low. I also try to do a crash showtime but it's doens't work that way. I also thought of trying to crash make my car to make it flips, but I didn't manage to crash my car (damn game).
But, I don't know if it's going to help, because I haven't watch the speedrun yet, you can do #93 with the Vegas, the car that start roaming in paradise city after 5 finished events. It may had a bit of RNG in your run, in the way that to have the best time, you will have to crash the Vegas, between the 5th events and the next junkyard, and before #93, but like I said, I didn't watch the run yet, so it may be even more slow that way.
And I don't know if we are going to be able to get this billboard with the Marina if we look at the top speed per vehicle http://burnout.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Vehicle_Top_Speeds
For reference: Marina Boosting Speed: 125 MPH / Vegas: 135 MPH / Ikusa: 142 MPH.
Thanks a lot for looking into that.

I also found the Krieg could hit that board, but using the Krieg for the rest of the run might be too much trouble. The Vegas might be doable, even with the RNG required to knock it down. As long as you aren't running an event, the capturable cars normally find you anyways. I'll try it tonight.
I did the run using the Hunter Vegas. The Vegas has some crazy handling issues because it's brakes are really terrible! I think it will still work though, just have to give myself tons of extra room.

New record is at 1:05:05 but I made about 10 minutes worth of errors. I'm thinking this can be easily shaved down to a 55 minute run once I get a feel for the Vegas. I'll post a video after I get a run worth sharing!

Updated main post with my new best time.

I didn't do narration with the newest recording, but the route hasn't changed much at all. If folks are interested in what I'm doing, the one hour 5 minute run has full commentary on the channel. I feel like I play MUCH better without talking about it while playing Smiley

A question about timing - I start my timer when the car is selected. If other people are interested in running this game, perhaps we should discuss what start time makes the most sense!
Chrono Trigger Speedrunner
Dude this is amazing, major congratulations to you. 120 billboards looks like a very fun speedrun, and all the categories are amazing giving the game so much versatlity (I would add something like "Beat all Road Times" or something like that style, pure fast driving to own every street time Smiley ) I will definitively be checking this out +  helping if I can, this is my favorite racing game of all time.

Route looks pretty solid (120 billboards) , I will give it a run through this week see if anything (if any) can be improved to save a few seconds, unfortunately can't stream from my consoles yet, but hopefully soon. And regarding timing I am curious if you started the timer before all the menuing at the start or after? Anyways, will be checking this thread during the week.

Great job  Cheesy
Thanks! I'm glad to find another Burnout Fanatic.  Smiley  I'm hoping other folks will get interested and we could have some billboard racing going on!

I started my timer right when I selected the car (hit enter once to choose the car, then enter a second time to select color - time starts then). So my time includes the menuing where I change time of day/tips, and menus are clunky on the PC. I switch to midnight because I think it reduces traffic a bit, and turn off DJ Automica since he stops gameplay to troll you with tips upon reaching the first intersection. I felt that starting the timer after the start screen might skew results based on PC's loading times too much, so the car selection time seems more appropriate. I guess it wouldn't matter much if it was completed on Xbox/Ps3.

Also, the run still has RNG in it, and I did have a few unintended crashes towards the end. I made the majority of the toughest jumps in one shot. Some of those jumps out of the parking garages will wastes about a minute or more when you miss them. Though I think the toughest portion is wrangling in the mountain portion of the run. It's so spread out, and probably room for optimization. My current route was the easiest for me to organize, but I bet there is room for improvement.

Yeah, I understand RNG being huge in this game. Timing makes sense to me if it starts before the menuing, no need to count the long intr cutscene, as you said, loading times and such. Did you play on PS3/360/PC? Forgot to ask that. I am checking stuf on 360, but it should be the same across all versions.

Do you have a Twitch channel? Or just uploading em to YT?

I'm playing on the PC. I don't think any new PC patches affected the core game at all but they added new purchasable cars. The gameplay should be identical, but we might have different loading times, and perhaps frame rate changes could occur.  If you have the unpatched original version of burnout (without the Motorcycles patch), you will have a shorter time by over 20 seconds. This is because you will not have to be shown the new bikes when you are forced to change cars, and you will have one less menu (cars/bikes/party menu). Additionally, you will not be able to modify time of day. If your game is up to date, we should be playing a functionally equivalent game.

I do have a Twitch channel http://www.twitch.tv/tdf_shoutcasts/ however my wireless set-up isn't optimal for the amount of bandwidth needed for this game. Open Broadcaster will only capture the game when it's recording at 1080p. It won't downscale it at all just based on how the game is running. I'm not sure why this happens. When I tried to stream Burnout, it lags and stops broadcasting frequently. When I stream other stuff like League of Legends on Binding of Isaac it doesn't have this problem (probably because the lower resolution -> less data used). For now I'm only posting to youtube. If I ever want to race folks I'll need to resolve my stream issue, and I'll need to find folks doing this run... lol

Maybe you could record the runs and comment them afterwards ? Smiley

BTW thank you very much for the map: I'm currently trying to see if a "120 billboards stunt run" is something feasible and your work helps a lot Tongue
While I ran the disc version of this game, it's also available on Steam right now under a steam sale if folks are interested in this game. It's going for $4.39
