Hi, I have thought of what I consider a great and unique concept for a prize.

I compose and remix/interpret music for a living, and I dare say my work is very appreciated amongst gamers. Most notably, I did the new version of the Bionic Commando soundtrack for the remake, named Bionic Commando Rearmed, released by Capcom on PSN, XBLA and Steam in 2008.

I love the music of old NES games. My grandmother died of cancer and my aunt recently got diagnosed. I took part of the last AGDQ live stream charity event and donated money without hesitation - the live stream concept it great! I want to see this thing grow and I want to actively be a part of increasing the size of donations. So, for future events I have come up with a way to my skill - making music - a prize for the charity event. Here's the idea:

1) The organizers of the charity event decides on a arbitrary time period - say 12 hours from the start of the event.

2) Anyone who donates money during this period is encouraged to submit the name of an videogame song with their donation (or a link to the song on YouTube - or some other way to identify the song, since NES songs don't really have names.)

3) After the arbitrary time period is over, the organizers determine who made the largest single donation during the time period. Needless to say, only donations that had a song name attached to them are eligible. Maybe these donations aren't eligible to winning other prizes, to not make it possible to win several prizes with one donation - this way, people who submit song names with their donations enter a prize category of their own. But I digress...

4) The winner's name and the song name is announced live on the live stream, and this is where my work starts: I will now start working on a remix/interpretation of this song right there and then.

5) If it's technically possible, it would be very cool if the live stream could cut over to a web camera at my place every once in a while, and show me working on this song. I mean, like a 10 second clip between two games in the marathon, and maybe a "how's it coming along?" sort of question every 1-2 hours. If this is not technically possible, I can register my own channel on, say, Twitch - and stream the music production over there so that anyone can check in on me at any time. However we solve it technically, I think it's important that people really "get" that the music production is happening real-time - that the music production is "live" too. This makes the entire thing a lot cooler. I think a fully produced song would take at least six hours to make.

6) When the song is done, it is sent over to the organizers as an mp3. This mp3 is put up as a free download on the charity event's website along with the winning donator's name and possibly a message from the donator (e.g. why he/she likes that particular song so much), and this is also announced on the live stream - anything to emphasize the prestige it significates to have been the one who chose the song to be remixed, thereby increasing the value of this rather abstract prize. I mean, the mp3 is a free-for-all download - so the winner doesn't get the song for himself/herself: It's the "honor" of getting to choose which song gets remixed/interpreted that is the prize, so it's important to infuse some prestige in this.

The prize concept can be expanded upon: Needless to say, the idea isn't restricted to me. For example: We could hook up with famous game music remixers/interpreters over at OC Remix and have several people contributing songs/prizes. With enough remixers, every 4 hour period there could be a new music remix winner!

The prize concept isn't even restricted to the art of music production: We could get artists from Deviant Art (or some other community of talented CG artists) to contribute - but instead of music that is chosen, created and put up as a free download it could be desktop backgrounds!

What's cool is that we get more people involved from other internet communitys (that are still game related), certainly increasing the crowd interested in the charity event and in turn increasing the number of possible donators. Also, it's cool that prizes get made during the actual marathon, and then get digitally distributed for free! It's very "internet age" and modern, if I may say so. Anyway, I think this could generate a lot of attention - so let's make it happen!

TL;DR: Those who donate the most money wins the prize of having his/her favorite game soundtrack song remixed by me (and possibly other music composers).

I'm liking this idea a lot, Simon. Smiley As a vgmusic connoisseur I think your stuff is pretty neat, and many others will remember it if we mention your deeds on stream.

This is an amazing idea, Simon. I will happily add it to the first post, though I don't know where to put it on the schedule yet. Thank you for contributing to our marathons! Smiley
Not a walrus
I really, really like this idea, but 5) is probably too twitchy to deal with so I'd rather just have you link your own channel and people can peek in from time to time. Smiley

I completely support this idea! Thanks Simon for offering such a unique and awesome prize! Smiley

P.S. BC Rearmed's soundtrack is awesome!
Alright, nice to see these positive responses (and the US haven't even woken up yet). I've already contacted a colleague of mine and will be contacting others I know in the business to see if they're interested in joining in and contributing music and art for this cause. I will also use whatever pull I can get in media to draw the attention of both possible donators and possible music/art contributors to this.

I'm thinking about doing a remix of a song now and post it on my site as a free download, and then send a press release about it to different gaming related websites. Along with the free mp3 download, visitors of my website will then be exposed to a message about the charity live stream - encouraging them to get involved any way they can.

I'll get back to you when this is all in motion. Keep feedbacking on the prize concept.

WOW.
This is awesome! I have actually been kicking around the idea of something like that, I do a little bit of music production on the side and such (I'm still learning :3). If I'm able to work on something before the marathon, I'd love to contribute to this. If you could get some other remixers involved too, my guessing is that an EP could be created if you really wanted to develop this. I really like this idea.

This sounds awesome! Would it have to be restricted to NES games?  Only because I probably wouldn't be interested in stuff like that but if you were talking about some of the Mega Drive/Amiga range then that would be far more up my street Smiley
Of course donators should be able to request any game music track of their choice, of any console/generation. I personally just happen to "specialize" in 8 bit / NES stuff.

I was thinking about making a shirt for the Donkey Kong speed-runs site and wearing it for my run and then putting it up for donations. Just so DK64 could have some donation incentive. Other than it just being an awesome run of course :p I just have to look into how to go about making a T-shirt and I'd be happy to post pics whenever I make it. Not really sure how you guys would want to give it away though. I was thinking simply whoever donates the most during my run or all DK related runs together.

so pro u don't even know
I am hype for this Simon!

I loved the BC:Rearmed soundtrack. This sounds like a brilliant idea. By the end of the marathon we would have a whole AGDQ charity remix album.

I agree with this. Maybe we can screencap your stream at some point, but anything else would be too much of a pain to deal with. We'll definitely have to figure out the exact logistics of how to implement this prize, but I want to implement it so very badly.

BTW, thanks for posting on our forums, Simon!

Cfox7: A DK-themed shirt sounds cool and I think it would make a good prize.

That sounds like an amazing prize, Simon!  Thanks for the offer!  Cheesy

Time to donate all the money for Treasure Master music.

If I pick up a Batarang or two from ebay, rather than take them over from the UK, would it be possible to send them to someone in the US for use as prizes in the Batman games?

cfox7: I really like the t-shirt idea! I'm sure it will bring in lots of donations. Smiley

RoboSparkle: Yes, you can mail them to Mike as stated in the first post. PM him for his address. Should I put you down for a Batarang now or wait?
Hey guys ^_^ It's me again, I just wanna check something.  I can keep trading for games all day, and tf2 trading works in such a way that Ic an make games out of nothing given enough time - How many games would be too many?  Like atm im sitting on 10 copies of Binding of Isaac+DLC+Soundtrack as it was on sale today and got it dirt cheap, is that too many? I dont wanna make lots of undue work for you guys at all if you dont think the return would be there.

Thanks for listening/reading yet again you beautiful people <3

Wait until I've actually got one sourced.  I might find something else (t-shirts, comics, posters) that I prefer, although you really can't go wrong with a Batarang so it'll probably be that.

If I get one from ebay from a US seller, can I ask the seller to mail them direct to Mike then?
Yo guys! I'm going to do some art, can't get enough art. I'm currently (!) working on a sketchy digital painting depicting the metroid prime 2 out of bounds glitch, and I can send a print as a donation prize if you want! I'd also like to do some art of the zombie hover glitch from Wind Waker, but I dunno if I can get it done. I'll see how I feel after finishing the metroid piccy.

Yes, this is fine, and I'll PM you my address.
Mercury: here are some new pics of the shield for you to add up top. This still isn't officially a prize, but we might as well put it out there for comment.

It might look a little different later if I shoot it with a coat of clear to keep it from rusting. As you can see, it's already rusted a bit since I made it.

I think I just splooged.

Figuratively, of course.
