Hello and thanks for a great marathon!

I had no idea that this marathon excisted untill recently. It was a lucky coincidence that a friend told me about it. I belive you should spend more resources in adverticing about your marathon to next time. There's a big crowd over the whole world that would love this if they just knew it excisted!

Thanks again and good luck!
Thread title:
Agreed.

Was one of the lucky Persons that randomly found out about this Marathon

There was tons of advertising. Many major gaming sites advertised for us and tons of people uploaded the promo video on youtube. We had like 4x as many viewers as last year.

It's impossible to reach everybody that could possibly be interested on the entire internet, but the fact that word of mouth led you to the marathon is proof enough that SDA's advertising was sufficiant.

PS: There was a gigantic banner about the marathon on teh SDA front page for like a week+, how could you miss that?
I mostly agree with aleckermit, but I still feel like the run didn't get coverage on major websites like penny arcade or reddit (unless I'm mistaken). While the turnout was awesome compared to last year, I still feel like the viewers  should've easily been 10k plus... a decent starcraft 2 stream hits 10k-20k easily every week, for example.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Any actual ideas for increasing media coverage?

Time.  Two is a coincidence.  Three is a trend.  It should be easier to promote a marathon with two under the belt rather than one.  Joystiq finally linked once the marathon started.  Focusing on the fact that the 2011 marathon raised $50,000 dollars should get more hits.

Indeed, Also I am wondering, how much viewers can UStream handle?

Because if I remember correctly the absolute max last marathon was about 2k viewers? While now, 2k was about average if not even below that.
And sometimes seem to want to 'expand' exponentially, so I'm just saying you gotta be careful you don't collapse under your own weight.
Also, how cheesy as it sounds. Maybe if this gets even bigger you could actually get companies to sponsor it all ^^. I think too far ahead sometimes...
Now a hit show on the CW

I'm fairly sure that Penny Arcade was contacted (and if they weren't, disregard this), but our charity sort of presented a conflict of interest, as it began directly after their big Child's Play push. This isn't meant as an attack towards PA...I'm a huge fan of the site. Just pointing out that we would probably be more likely to get a mention there if the marathon took place a little later in the year (not to mention that people tend to be a bit tapped out, financially, immediately after the holiday season).

I'm wondering if an "official" press release type announcement would reach more people.  Have some sort of announcement that can be copy and pasted onto game news sites.

Ustream had at least 54k viewers for the Solar Eclipse, it also broke when evo2010 hit 30k viewers.

I wonder if contacting ustream would help at all. Maybe they could feature the marathon on the front page, or as a top pick for the gaming category. I know everyone was encouraging ad block, but if there's extra money in the pot, then buying the no ad option for the marathon period might be helpful for those IE users.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
Maybe we should get a hold of more news stations?  It was featured locally on a college station, I was told, so that certainly doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Need to dispel more "gamers are evil" myths!
Exoray
Oh we had advertisement:

We contacted several large gaming sites, some featured us, some did not.
We could be found on both Facebook and Twitter plugging the marathon.
We had a youtube promo video that was uploaded by lots of people to their own account reaching a vast number of subscribers.
We had promotion on the SDA main page over 1 month prior to the marathon.
We had at least 2 pages on reddit last time I checked.
If I'm not mistaken, some people printed flyers and handed out.
We did this marathon last year at around the same time, so people who knew about it last year should already have known about it.,

Of course, one can always get more advertisement.
Everybody's favorite monster
Saying we didnt advertise enough is pretty ignorant
