Received this survey from Brossentia's friend for a college project - if you'd like to participate, please send your response directly to Justin at juyoung101@msn.com; though if you'd like to share your responses with the forum, feel free to post here too.

Quote:
Hello.
This is Justin Young, a student of Utah State University. I am conducting surveys and interviews with members of the SDA community, focusing mainly at http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/ . These surveys and interviews will serve as research for the final paper of my Folklore and the Internet course. The data from this research will be analyzed and presented to the instructor in the form of an Ethnography, or culture study. If you would like to fill out any portion of the survey below, I would greatly appreciate your help. All names and private information you provide can be changed or removed upon request. Please send responses to juyoung101@msn.com .

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.
Thread title:
No pain, no gain
Just to say, this information is only being used for a class project, in case you're worried about personal information or anything like that.  I have a similar class from the same professor right now, and she has a huge interest in communities on the internet and how they interact -- I've been able to convince old people in there that gaming can be a nice, positive thing.  It's a neat move that folklore is taking, and I expect the humanities to take things more seriously in the near future.

Anyway, if you go to SGDQ and go to buy games at Fun Unlimited, you will be in the Logan, Utah area... just remember that.  I'd like for him to owe a lot of dinners Smiley
Willing to teach you the impossible
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
My name is David Heidman Jr. I go by the screen name Heidrage, but I originally started out just using my last name. So the folk that knew me before I switched still call be Heidman.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I am an active posting member for the most part. I lurk until a topic or game comes up that interests me then I become very very active in that thread.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

More important than any moderators. My roll shows support for the runner and really shows them that some one else really cares about what is it that they are doing. Trying to produce a run with no support is really hard as it is very easy to get discouraged and throw in the towel way too early. Not all members of the forum need to be a speed runner, being a fan is the number 1 priority hands down.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I was unaware of the forum for a long time. I found SDA long before I ever became a member. But becoming a member and being a part of SDA are 2 different things. I became apart of SDA about 9 months after I joined the forum. I am sure a bunch of forum members would say longer than that, but I was unaware of it at the time.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
Yes, most definitely. To make it easy, please read my post (first post of the thread) http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/why_do_you_likelove_sda_so_much.html

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
Being that it was the first forum I ever joined, yes I received some negative feedback. but I listened to it and learned from my mistakes. Mostly just generic forum rules really.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Yes, exactly what you said. Just don't act like a 12 year old. Be sure any generic baseball cap can fit on your head, be willing to be wrong, and be respectful. Just act as you would in any other public place. Jokes are always welcome (but sarcasm can be hard in text). Also, use the search function.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

SDA has an entire section for that. From introducing yourself to getting others screen names and friend codes for other networks.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

What was a name you were called by your friends in school? That would be a great start in my opinion.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

Make sure it can be read and be pronounced. Example: "lxx4xNx6xxl" Take a guess on that one. It is a play on a single word that is hidden. You are supost to ignore the l's and x's and read it as "4" "N" "6" as in forensics. Just keep it simple to readable.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Experience and dont be afraid to ask. I am still learning things and names for games I have been following for a long time. Don't feel bad if you cant keep up... I can't.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

I can really only brag about mine. During my first marathon appearance, I messed up a boss fight in Super C and died. Before I respawned, I said "2 Shots" then dramatically showed everyone hitting the boss only 2 more times before it died. Since then, many others have tried to call how many hits were left if they messed up a boss kill. But it is not that easy. Here is a link to the video of it happening.

I'll steal your bolded-questions @Heidrage, because they look better Wink
Also, should we still send the answers to the E-Mail? I mean, I absolutely love reading these things here, so I'd be glad if more people posted ^^

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
My screen name is Yagamoth, and I don't like my real name

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I'm mostly a lurker, but every once in a while I try to give input on things where I feel like I can contribute something

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
Objectively, it's as important as any other members role - without a bunch of people, there isn't much of a community. My opinion though is - I'm rather unimportant ^^

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
I basically knew about that site "SDA" ever since a school mate showed me the "3D Metroid" run.... I think that was something like 2004/2005. I only started paying more attention ever since AGDQ 2011 - when I realized how much I have in common with those people, even if I'm not much of a Speedrunner myself. The people in here have a genuine interest in the games themselves, and don't simply play them for prestige or other weird reasons.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
As mentioned - it was AGDQ 2011. I saw these people have fun with so many retro games, they knew a ton about them, they were really good and they were mature in an interesting way.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
I do not think I've received any negative feedback, if anything at all it was about the game and simply informative

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Behave in a mature way? I mean, jokes and similar things are absolutely fine as long as you don't got overboard (Also, sarcasm is very hard to detect in text-form). And.. While not particularly necessary, having decent grammar helps reading your posts (Look at my writing... I think it's horrible because I', not a native english-speaker. But I guess it's fine). Use arguments whenever possible, and not opinions. Be open minded for "being wrong" and criticism.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
I'm not good at this. I think there is a specific board-section for this

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
Most importantly: Pick something you actually like. Other than that, I simply suggest using something non-cryptic.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Screen names are more memorable, when you use something that is actually easy to remember (PJ, Lag.com, Zyre). But other than that - it's the person itself that is popular.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
The general acronyms are relatively easy to get a hold of (Such as SDA, TAS, RTA, etc.). But there are a lot of game-specific acronyms which are different on a game by game basis (RBA = Reckless Bee Adventure? Reverse Bee Adventure? Reverse Bottle Adventure?). In short - don't be afraid to ask, people are usually don't mind explaining it in a short sentence. Also, if you are interested in a specific game, you'll learn the jargon really fast anyway

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

Yes, there are tons of them. One of the more common ones at Marathons - "This was a horrible run.." from the runner while people still find it to be awesome ^^

Carcinogen: 2012-11-12 01:48:27 am
Sociology/Ethnology courses were always fun in school.

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
I go by the handle Carcinogen in speedrunning circles.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I'm an active posting member.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
I would consider myself very "well established" but not of any real importance. The vast majority of regulars here know who I am, what I do, why I'm here, and what kind of impact I have on the community in given situations.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
Identify? Probably when I started partaking in the forum's common activity, which is beating video games really really fast. I joined the forum as a result of this.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
I do time attacks of multiple installments in a well-known game series (Resident Evil). No particular story, but people look to me as a 'guru' of sorts. It's consequential to the common activities within the community.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
Oh geez, plenty. This community practically revolves around criticism and whether you can take it or not.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

First rule of thumb is to not get angry if someone contradicts your opinion. Second is to keep your mouth shut and watch unless you have any real input to give. It's fine to let loose after you've been around for a while (or you relate well to the community/are a people person), as people have an idea of how you operate and there's an element of trust established between you and everyone else. But most important of all, is to participate. Record a video of yourself playing the game, ask questions (provided you can't find an answer yourself by using a search engine or the search function on the forums), and offer input where you can.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
Pretty much everything I described above, but friendships usually fall into niches with very common grounds; say for instance, you enjoy the same activities or speedrunning the same video game. The forums are almost exclusively for video game discussion, video game time attack discussion, and site content discussion; but if you know how to use IRC (which by today's standards is an old and somewhat esoteric form of internet chatroom) you can connect to the site's IRC server, enter the chatroom, and talk about other subjects with a vast majority of the same members.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
So? I chose Carcinogen because I was 17 and thought it sounded cool. Just pick a name that reflects something you like or something. It's the internet, most societal standards don't even apply here, and the best part of all is you can wear your name like bling-bling because it's the image you've constructed for yourself.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Uhh... XxXxXSniper42069XxXxX used to be pretty popular? I don't know. I guess it's the fact that people choose screen names based on the things they like, the things they do, etc... Some people just make their screen names their real names, initials, or some variant. It's not particularly deep.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
Caught me with my pants down for this one. As new things emerge, new ways to do something require some kind of terminology. In Linguistics, that's what a word is: it's an amalgamation of an idea that carries a meaning. Ergo, shorthand. But how do you learn what terminology the speedrunning community uses? You just pick it up over time, same with the native language you learned when you were a child. It becomes second nature as new concepts are acquired.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
Best Final Fantasy game is a good one, because it's kind-of a satire of an age old argument on various internet forums that we managed to capitalize and got people to throw money at during a charity event. Since then, it's become a tradition to have a donation incentive where people vote for the best Final Fantasy game. It still makes a good chunk of donation money too, because there's one thing you can always count on: Little Billy on the internet has an opinion, and he has to make it known!

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.
Better be careful with that offer, because free food is something I never reject!
Please feel free to post in this thread. If you'd like to send an email as well as post here, go for it. =D Either way works great.

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

Paraxade, usually shortened to Parax (which I actually prefer to the whole thing nowadays). And I prefer not giving out my real name Tongue

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I post a lot I guess. Beyond that, I'm a runner. If I'm not posting about my own run then usually I'm involved in planning discussion for a game I'm interested in or showing support for someone else interested in doing a run.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

Well, I'd like to think I contribute, but probably not that important in the grand scheme of things Tongue I mean, the forum wouldn't cease to function without me around or anything.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I dunno really... I got into speedrunning and sequence breaking Metroid Prime and the Metroid series through Samus.co.uk and Metroid2002 long before I joined SDA. Like, I knew about SDA for the longest time, but I never really went here. My starting to post here didn't really have much to do with the community moreso than the discussions happening on the forums interested me.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

Well, more specifically, I joined because I was interested in sequence breaking Twilight Princess right after it came out. I was about two months late, so I had a 117-page thread to read through first (it's probably 10 times that length now).

Actually, what got me talking to people is kind of an interesting story. It's kinda tl;dr though, so in a nutshell... I found a huge sequence break and then got into a dispute over credit with a well-known youtuber. Cue DRAMA. Though the whole thing did prompt a couple people on SDA to start talking to me, I guess because I actually contributed in a big way that made people realized oh hey this guy can actually do something. I dunno.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

Not really. I joined before streaming was a thing, I wasn't doing any runs at the time, and my posts were fine. Tongue

If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Just the same stuff you'd do anywhere else. Don't pick a name like, say, xXxHyP3rShAd0wS3pH1r0pH2519xXx... write legible posts with proper grammar, don't be a dick, and don't be excessively stupid. The community here tends to be pretty welcoming to new members, you shouldnt have many issues. Tongue

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

You can feel free to talk to me if you want xP If you wanna meet more people though, you should try the IRC channel. #sda on irc.speeddemosarchive.com. Also, watching streams and being active in the chat can be a nice way to meet people around the community.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

haha, you are asking the wrong person. I'm awful with names. The one you already have seems fine really Tongue

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

I'm not really sure that anyone is popular around here for their name. I guess names that are easy to pronounce and memorable is the best you'll get.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Most of the terms you can probably learn the meaning of through context or Google. If you're confused about anything else, feel free to ask. Again, the community tends to be pretty welcoming toward new people, and I'm sure most everyone here will be wiling to help you learn. [edit: also the FAQ on the main site does a good job of describing a lot of terms]

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

bangerra: 2012-11-12 02:55:43 am
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

Dave Janssens irl, bangerra on the internets ever since I made my very first email account about 15 years ago.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I'm an active poster. I tend to search out for people in need for some assistance and try to help out as much as I can. That can be both with technical problems or speedrun related. Working together on fresh games can be a wonderful experience.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

As I have stated before, helping others is just what I like to do. I don't see myself as a crucial part of the community, but I'm sure my presence doesn't stay unnoticed.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

Though I had been lurking for what I think was 2 years, I finally decided to become a part of the community somewhere last year. Enjoyed every moment since.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

Well, I always had speedrunning and comparing race times in mind even when I was a child. I used to play Kirby's Dream Land every day (and I still do tbh) just to improve my times. So naturally when I grew older I started actively searching online for a place where I could share my experiences. That's how I found SDA, though it scared me for a while. The 'known' speedrunners almost looked like celebrities and I was sure I would never be able to become one of them. It was only later by watching the marathons that I became aware these runners were much more 'accessible' and homely than I ever imagined. That's when I decided to take a step forward.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

I was already very used to posting on forums and I had even been forum mod before of a small community. So not much criticism on that part. Getting my stream working was a daunting task, but the people here and on IRC have been a major help in getting things set up. I received nothing but positive input from the community and that's absolutely awesome.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

It's okay the make mistakes, but it's fantastic if you're prepared to admit them Wink
Quote:
Also, use the search function.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

You'll get to know people you like and dislike quickly. See it as a personal journey!

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

I'd recommend something that is not blatantly gaming related. Obvious nicknames look like trolls to me. (e.g. LuigiLinkVII sounds both retarded and childish) Obscure references are allowed of course. And prevent numbers, I hate numbers >:(.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

The more readable, the better. Don't use symbols, use something that makes sense.
A good looking avatar also helps.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Too hard to just start summing them up. Just ask when you don't understand one. People will help you Smiley

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

Watch Siglemic's or Cosmo's stream for 15 minutes. You'll know what's fresh (part from being absolutely disgusted by the average twitch viewer).
Totally rad
What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
My real name is Adam Kuczynski, and my screen name is AdamAK (though I quite often just go by Adam as well).

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I don't post all that often, but I suppose I'm still an 'active posting member'.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
Not terribly important. The only 'important' thing I may do is contribute to the discussion about a game.

When did you first identify with the forum's community?
Probably within a week of me signing up.

Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
The first time I visited the forums was when I signed up, after watching Siyko's Diablo 2 100% run and thinking I should try something myself as well. Before that, I didn't even realise there were forums (as I had only browsed the SDA main page)

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
Yes, Siyko's 100% D2 run. I watched all of it in one go while listening to the audio commentary. I had an absolute blast with it, and somehow felt inclined to message the guy about how much I liked his run. It motivated me to come up with a game to speed run on my own. One of the first games that came to mind was Sonic Chaos for the SMS. I had watched mike89's TAS while practicing for the game, and thought it was awesome that he was on the forums as well, offering help with routing and such. I was then certain that this was a good place to hang out.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
Perhaps I went a bit overboard with my unconditional SMS love, but other than that I think I wasn't too much of a pain.

If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?
Don't post like Alko. That's probably all.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
If you start running a game, and there are other people running the same game, you'll probably get to know them a bit. Alternatively, just hang out in some stream channels and see which people you like. That's how I got to know a few folks, at least.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
You're asking a guy who just picked his first name as a screen name. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter at all. You could always go for "Brossentia's Bro" or something, if you want it to be 'clever'.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Absolutely. Just like on XBoxLive, adding "xXx" before and after your regular name, and adding "420" or "blazing" makes you infinitely cooler. All the cool kids on the forum do it.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
You'll learn the meaning of all the acronyms quite quickly, probably. There aren't all that many technical terms, though once every while something new pops up that confuses people (like sub-pixel or sub-frame perfect tricks). You'll learn to speak SDA language by listening to others using it. If anything's unclear, you can always simply ask.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
Jordan Mullins, Naegleria

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
Semi active posting member.  I mostly just read the topics, but if I have something to contribute I'll throw in my two cents.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
Not that important.  I don't contribute anything that someone else could not.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
Just after CGDQ (Classic Games Done Quick) in early 2010.  I watched the occasional video on the site but never participated in the forum before that.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
I played a lot of Sonic years back.  Seeing the genesis classics being played at CGDQ got me interested in the community.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
Nothing about posting.  When I first started streaming I had terrible audio that was really staticy, I got some criticism about that.  In terms of my runs, people who were more experienced than I gave me advice on improving them.  So all the criticism I received was constructive.  I'm not sure if the question was seeking negative criticism or not, if it was I have not had any.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?
Pretty much the same things to enter other communities I'd guess.  Don't be obnoxious and try to contribute something useful.  Most people at SDA are pretty cool so as long as you don't try to piss anyone off you should be fine.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
People who are running the same games as you is a pretty good start.  Check out their streams or talk to them on the forums.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
If you already have a nick name, you could use that.  I've seen some people with entire phrases or sentence fragments for names, which I think is a really bad idea; your name should not take several seconds to say.  Also, the name should be unique enough that people can distinquish you from others (SDA has a ton of people with variants of Mike).  Something short, unique, and easy to say (you know, like Naegleria, nobody has trouble with that).

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Having a long string of numbers on the end of the name generally gets criticized, can't think of anything else.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does (sic) I speaking (sic) SDA language?
I've seen a few jargon lists. The Sunday Sequence Break twitch page has one, SDA's Knowledge Base might have a few things to, unfortunately though, the Knowledge Base is not updated as frequently as I would like it to be.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
Serious time, when one must concentrate on a game.  Saving frames, when one cares about saving 60ths of seconds in a run.  Methods of button mashing, I'm a claw grip man myself.  Rejected, when one makes a mistake in a run thereby denying it entry within SDA's walls.  The Man or The Woman and in some cases The Mom, a title only for those who are worthy of great recognition.  At SDA marathons, most of the people in the backroom are practicing or just playing games for fun.  One of these games, is Chu Chu Rocket.  Suffice to say, Chu Chu Rocket is undeniably the greatest game ever made.

im mostly a lurker in the tech support forums. i love everything tech related such as recording problems, checking quality tests etc. i dont really discuss the games (anymore). im just a member since 2006.

Quote:
How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

not very important, i think. i sometimes try to help people having trouble, or just post random comments on stuff. i also check the verification topic daily to see if i can help out with verifying any run.

i registered 27th june 2006

Quote:

i think i hanged around the forums a week before i registered (iirc there was a guest feature). eventually i wanted to have my own avatar.

i was impressed by the 4:57 ocarina of time run and i wanted to know if a 100% run was in the plans. i also wanted to discuss gta san andreas speedruns.

i dont remember, and im too lazy  to go back and check the responses to my posts. but i was 11 at the time so i do imagine people was frustrated over my spelling, and my over-enthusiasmm, and constant nagging (Yautja Elder, guy who currently has the 100% ocarina of time run on the site, i nagged on everyday, telling him to do the next segment, i can imagine him being very frustrated at me)..

i feel kinda embarrassed when i read my earlier posts, but i was 11 at the time so what could i do... also at one time i was enthusiatic to get over 1000 posts, so i think i posted 100 random ones just to get over that barrier, i think i almost got banned.

not sure... i prefer no smilies and only lower case, just text.

talk to the people that run the same game as you, and dont be an douche. common sense.

i have 2 nicks; DJS - my initials, simple i like it & prefer it. lambdaN - when i was 12 and playing cs 1.6 (counter-strike) it was popular to have a name ending in N, so i saw the lambda logo, and just added an N after. i absolutely hate this name, its so childish to me. but i use it where i cant use DJS (my twitch.tv for example).

if you want me to be friends with you, your níck cannot be similar to xX Drag0n_SLaYer Xx. im fine with pretty much anything else.

i think you can go pretty far without the acronyms and stuff. if you are unsure, just ask like "AGDQ?" and someone will probably answer you. usually you can also just google it. only things that i dont think you can google is Split and verifications (because they have multiple meanings). a split is when you are using a timer such as Wsplit, and you wanna see if you are ahead or behind your PB (personal best), and a verification is when a speedrun is in sda's verification process, where verifiers check if the video quality and run quality is good enough to be on the site.

i think the most important thing you need to know is if the run you are interested in doing is any% or 100% or x%, and if your run is segmented (multiple parts) or single-segment (single part, one sitting).

i guess "You are the man or the wo-man as the case may be" is a pretty popular one on the marathons.

ozzy88: 2012-11-12 07:31:40 am
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

Hi! My real name is Emil Blom and I live in Sweden. My screen name is in most cases ozzy88 and if that's occupied I'll use ozzy__88. History of the name is that I did what my dad did when he started to make online profiles. Took my favourite artist at the time and slapped 88 on it. The underscore business, I don't remember how that started. My favourite colour is black...secondary would be red.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I have not been a very active member, I very recently started a thread about a game I speedrun and have gotten some responses. I'm basicly keeping a leaderboard on that game and helps people figure out some of the strategies that they might have missed. Sadly there is not any good source to learn how to run the game as of today.

Outside of that I post in random threads of interest to me and help answer some general questions if I can.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

I haven't contributed a whole lot so my "role" is not that important to the forums. To the individual person I've helped here, I feel like I do things of some importance. It feels very rewarding to see someone work something out and in some cases even thanking you for it. This community has given me so much so it's good to be able to give back a little bit now and then.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I think very recently I've been feeling a lot more like a part of SDA. I got to know some people a little bit from speedrunning over at speedrunslive.com and I've always tried to watch the latest published speedruns. But at some point I started to keep track of numerous forum threads and over time I've become more and more involved. The real turning point for me was when some people were trying to start up a charity marathon much like AGDQ but in Europe. I got quite involved in that and in the end I helped plan and participated in what became ESA, European Speedster Assembly.

Also lately I've been working on getting a run I could submit here, having a run on the site would make me feel more part of it, since that's what SDA is about in the end.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

What caused me to register in the first place was that at the end of the first SDA-marathon I saw, they talked about how much it has grown over time and you could feel that they were proud of their progress. They talked about how anyone is welcome in the community and I thought that since I've been running and watching runs for quite some time I'd at least join the community in support of it's growth.

As I said earlier the planning of ESA made me realise that this forum thing ain't so bad. I've never gotten into any other forum before and always just though of it as a messy bunch of threads where I can't find anything. Thankfully you live and you learn. Smiley

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

As I was very cautious to post anything at the start I didn't really say much or create any controversies. All my experiences at this forum and outside of it has been positive so far. The people you don't agree with just have a different opinion then you and there is no reason to start a fight over it.

I try to not post too much of my thoughts since I know I usually word it poorly, so overdoing it would just bite me in the ass in any case. I'd rather take part of other peoples thought and ideas and tell that person whether or not it's a good idea if I feel strongly enough about it.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

My approach was to learn over time, look at the FAQ's and searching for information on the site before posting anything. That way you won't upset people for having to answer the same thing over and over again. I guess it's pretty much like with any other kind of forum.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

Try to approach people who seem to share you thoughts and interests. Even if we all love the speedrunning phenomenon we do for very different reasons. At the very least starting out neutral would help how the community will look upon you in the future.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

Any name that won't disrespect anyone should work. Same as everywhere else on the internet.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

Throwing in a reference to a game you enjoy is sort of popular I guess. For example Puwexil is a boss in Super Castlevania 4 and Mecha_Richter comes from the character Richter from the Castlevania series.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

If you hear a term on the forum and don't know what it is, google is your friend most of the time. If you see it in a chat on a streaming site, asking politely in the chat will probably work too. You pick up the terms over time. If nothing else people can direct you to http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/glossary/ where you'd find if not all terms the most commonly used at least.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

The community have been making memes more rapidly lately and I haven't been able to follow. I enjoy them far more then I'd like to admit. It just makes the community seem more immature and hard to access for new people.

Here are some of the ones I know of:

Splinter face
The man/The woman/The mom
This is the run/the urn
Reject
Marathon luck
Peppers

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.

Thanks for taking interest in the community, would be cool if you'd like to share your work with us afterwards! That food tho, so many miles away Sad

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
People know me by the name of S. (having interpunction in my name is disturbing when I end a sentence with it)

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
Lurker, for the most part. I usually keep my mouth shut if I don't have anything useful to say, but sometimes I pop out in one of the non-serious threads as well.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
As depressing as it might sound, I don't think it's that very important :p

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
Knew about SDA for a long time, but it was only recently I started posting. I'm not sure why. I think it's because people started to know who I am over at TSSB, figured I might as well make myself known on SDA.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
See above?

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
Can't remember anyone raging at me, so no.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?
Act according to your age. If you are 20 years old, then behave like an adult. If you are 12 years old, remain quiet. Nothing annoys me more than a 12 year old pretending to be an adult. Also, my tactic is to not go in gun-blazing and post everywhere. Build it up until people know who you are. It's kinda weird seeing newcomers on forums that behave like they've been there for 2 years. (Although I don't see anything wrong with that, especially if their posts have good content, it's just disturbing to me)

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
Everybody is your friend

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
You don't pick a name, the name picks you. I stumbled onto something awesome sounding, turned that into my nick. Eventually you might get bored of it, then it's time to pick a new name. I used to go by a longer name, but certain elements of it became childish/stupid to me, so I kept shortening it. In the end only the S and the dot were left over.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Seems most people go with either something related to a game they like, or their real name mixed up a bit. Personally I tend to avoid my rl-name and game-names just don't do it for me. Coming up with something original is pretty difficult though.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
I'm sure there's a list of the most important terms somewhere. Others you'll find out eventually. Same as with learning any language.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
Yes

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.
No problem, and uhh, how about a deal? I'll treat YOU to dinner, and you pay for my travel expenses!
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
Just call me doicm.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I post here when I find it relevant to post, but otherwise I try not to spam with useless information....although I often do. Dang...

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
In terms of administrative matters, very little. However, I like to post sources or links to sources in many of the gaming threads. I'm not much for discussing things pertaining to personal matters or anything like that, but I try to keep people informed of games that I work on as well as different strategies.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
I lurked for a couple of years before I started doing my own speed running. I wanted to post about my own strategies and times that I got on the forum, which is when I joined. I mainly looked to others to take my strategies and use them in their own runs (because I couldn't record runs at the time). However, no one ever responded, I caved in, and I got a capture card. I now have a submitted run on SDA as a result.

Yes, and I greatly appreciate the criticism. I often ask for it, and here I find that I get plenty of constructive criticism. I hardly ever find "you suck lol" on here.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

I think the best attitude to have is to participate in a way that would help you make friends. Rather than isolating yourself and pointing to yourself as "the best" while pushing down others, seek to find others that you can relate to and encourage others to do their best. Also, don't take offense from people that offer you constructive criticism. If someone is looking to start a fight on the forum (say, another "12 year old"), either ignore it or approach an admin with your concern. In short, be mature.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
I found it was easiest to make friends with the people who play the same games as you. Most of the popular games have their own channel on SDA's irc, and you can usually fit in well with them so long as you aren't trying to constantly show off to them. Participate with them in a positive manner by posting in their twitch chat if they stream gameplay. Also, work on your own strategies and find ways to contribute to the game of interest.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
I like werster's guide on spelling here: http://pastebin.com/86f8yXFY
However, my name doesn't exactly follow that. Pick a name that you like. That's...all I can think to say there.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
See above.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
http://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Glossary_of_terms http://speedrunslive.com/faq/glossary/
Both good glossaries here for some terms related to speedrunning in general. Anything new that pops up I think would be good to ask about if you linger around and don't get it after a bit.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
My understanding of memeology is terrible.

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.
Go to UVU instead, and that'd make it much easier on me. XD
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

Hello There! Real name is Tim Kedge, On forums and games I tend to go by the nickname "Judgy" or "Judgie" which is a shortened version of my first Gaming name "Judgement" from when i used to play Raindow Six 3: Raven Shield with my Clan "TaG" (Tactical Assault Group)

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I would say active poster but only if I have something worth adding to a thread however most the time i lurk until something catches my eye.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

Not very if I'm honest, like i say i'll add to a thread if I have knowledge enough to back up what I'm saying or if someone has a simple question i know the answer to but generally I don't play much of a part.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I think i joined the community shortly after AGDQ 2012, i knew there was a forum before I joined but only actually joined once i decided to run a game myself.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) was a big influence on me deciding to join the active forum community, after watching the event and seeing people actually doing runs.. not just to say they had the best time in a game, but also to raise money for various charities i thought "these people are cool" also they weren't like so many immature 'gamers' who would shout "you f#?£!ng noob" at you if you failed, they would help you a give you guidance if you found something difficult or say "how about trying this...?".

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

Not really my first experience of posting was on a Thread for Sniper: Ghost Warrior which had a speed run attempt posted on the first few mission about 1 year prior to my post so i was pretty much posting to a dead audience lol and before that i checked through a few other games threads so i knew what was acceptable to post (videos, etc)

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

A mature attitude is always a good start if you don't act childish you don't get treated like a child, generally if your new and you have a plan to do a run or at least help out in one enter the thread for that game (or series) and introduce yourself in there, say what you hope to do, if you need advice just ask a few questions people will normally just answer without a second thought Smiley

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

Who to get in with is a difficult thing to give an answer to, while there are some people who it may be a good thing to get on the right side of if you actually don't like who that person is you won't have a good friendship, find the people you like in the community best way is to just give it some time Smiley

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

Pick something that you want, if your ok with something completely random like "TurkeyAndTaters" and don't mind it being shortened to "turk" then go with it because people will shorten it cuz we iz lazy Tongue
However, if you have something dear to you which you wish to use, then use it , personally (this might only be me) i hate to see stuff like..... 2 users one called "xXXCloudXxx" the other called "xXxXCloudXxXx" that annoys me something rotten lol.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

see above lol xXx(name)xXx, xxx(name)xxx, xXX(name)XXx and so on

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Most of it can be deciphered pretty easily, else the wiki should explain most of the more technical stuff. not being much of a forum user before SDA some i got stuck on were AFAIK (As far as I know) IIRC (If I recall correctly) OtToMH (Off the top of my head) [Pretty sure that was on this forum]

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I consider myself as an active posting member, I know I haven't been as present as last years but I still post often.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

I'm kind of a Game Breaker, I used to work for a glitch finding company(quality test) and I try as much as I can to plan and break Game I love, so people could eventually beat records on those games and become better than I am so I would still be happy that I found 90% of the glitches of the game they are running and helping them through the way!!!(E.G. Amnesia Tongue )

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I register 9th August 2010

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

I used to looked at speedrun since I saw the TAS of mario 64(before I knew what a TAS was, then I saw that a lot of the people that were commenting on TAS were in this community, so that picked up my curiosity.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

I was usually receiving good feedback on the run I was doing back then(Amnesia and Super Meat Boy) so that was one of the motivation to pass most of my time speedrunning and being in this forum and trying to get in this big family!

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Try to be as much as you can polite with people, don't insult other and everything should be fine.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

Usually by hanging in the game you're speedrunning, you'll end up being friend with the people that are speedrunning the same game as you and I would also advice coming to the Marathons is also a great way to make friends.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

I personally think either, your real name, something totally random and funny, something related to a video game you love.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

SSSSSAAAAAAGGGGGGGAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNN
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

My name is Chris Owen and I am known under the nickname ChristosOwen.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

I'm generally just a lurker. I check the forums occasionally for any headline news about speedrunning, and for any topics relating to the games I run, Super Mario World and A Link to the Past. I have also updated the A Link to the Past forum topic albeit not particularly well as nobody will read it anyway.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

Not very. Perhaps some people will value my opinions on some things, but I'm not tech-savvy and apart from my point of view on speedrunning, and my knowledge of the games I run, I'm fairly useless on these forums.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

I first started streaming over on twitch via SRL on 28th November 2011, so almost an entire year ago. I'd watched runs of my favourite games on SDA for maybe two years prior to this, and checked maybe one or twice a month. I later found live streams on w00ty and began watching these for about a year or so, increasingly more regular. The first speedrunners I found were Jiano, KingHippo423 and Runnerguy2489, who I watched a lot. And then I started streaming and racing, and well here I am.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

I'd always thought I was a beast at A Link to the Past by being able to beat the GBA port in a single sitting, but then I watched the SDA run and was so impressed with it. I always thought one day I'd be able to gain enough skill to compete with the speedrun I saw, but the biggest motivator for me to actually join the speedrunning community was the competitive racing which was possible over on SRL. For the first few months after I joined I simply loved to compete with the other guys and race them as much as possible. As I got better I started leaning more towards streaming run attempts on twitch, and became increasingly involved with the #alttp community. Once I'd gained more knowledge and refined my skills, I eventually pushed towards organising a weekly race for A Link to the Past, stealing the idea from the weekly Saturday Night Bingo races from Ocarina of Time. This has now been going strong for I think over 30 weeks! I also checked out a lot of newer people casting A Link to the Past on twitch and actively encouraged people to speedrun the game and/or head over to #alttp and get involved. I feel like I've helped to increase the game in popularity whilst getting more people into speedrunning, and I would say that's my biggest achievement to date in terms of speedrunning, as I'm still yet to reach my goal time for submitting an SDA run!

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

Not really. My stream quality was appalling when I first started as I was really un-techy and didn't know what IRC was, what XSplit was, how to setup XSplit to stream, how to add a microphone to my stream, and soforth. Luckily I had help from one of my early viewers (KTSaki/Prier) who helped me actually get a decent-ish looking stream. I eventually decided I wanted to migrate to console with the aim of eventually getting a SDA run recorded. I was lucky enough to have some very generous viewers who donated enough for me to equip myself with a US SNES, Dazzle Capture Card, and all the other bits and pieces that go with it. I also had a lot of tech help from people over on the SRL IRC channel (Sluip) who helped me understand how the heck a capture card worked and soforth. Since, I guess people have commented positively on my stream setup and bio section, as I've taken time to try to make it look appealing, and my runs have of course improved as my skill has improved over time. Moreover, I like to help people learn the game and people have commented that I'm a good person to ask questions before.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Type properly when making posts. Get involved with the areas you're actually interested in. Don't cause a load of drama for no reason. Just play video games, chill out and have a swell time.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

People who are interested in the same games you are, and people who you find share the same point of view as you. Don't judge people on what you hear about them from other people until you've made up your own mind about them. Racing over on SRL helped me to get to know a lot of people better, and then offering to Skype with people is also a good way to get to know people better, and is very fun.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

Choose something that's relevant to you and your life?

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

A screen name with a cool looking banner is always good. Something easily legible, and not spamming numbers and unusual characters. It isn't really a big deal to me anyway though.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Try and find out what terms mean on Google, if not, just ask. People are always happy to help. You'll pick up the terms as you stream/run anyway, and as you find out what really makes you tick, you'll develop your interests by default anyway, and the terminology will become second nature.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

Save the Frames Foundation.

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.

You're welcome!

The Dork Knight himself.
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

My name is Jason Feeney, but my friends call me Jay. On the forums I go by honorableJay.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

Like most of us, I'd consider myself a combination of a lurker and active poster. I'll check out topics on games that I've played or that interest me, and I will contribute to a thread if I have knowledge to share.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

I'd say it's a very important role in the forums. I'm might not be the most knowledgeable person here and I can't police topics, but without regular users posting content or contributing in some way to a discussion there wouldn't be a point to the forums at all.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

The first time I really started to identify myself with the community was around the time I started really working on a speedrun. Just being able to post my ideas, my progress, and have others not only give encouraging words, but constructive feedback, helped me immensely.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

After Morimoto's infamous Mario 3 TAS run, I started digging into the idea of speedrunning games. I found nesvideos (now known as tasvideos) and SDA as the two top sites for both styles of runs. I already knew about Quake speedrunning, but this was the first time I found an actual collection of games I knew and played growing up that all had records (and unlike Twin Galaxies, these records came complete with comments and videos, not just a spreadsheet entry). One of the first games I came across that really caught my attention was Jedi Outcast. At the time I was playing Quake 3 in a semi-competitive format, and knowing that Outcast was based on the Q3 engine, I knew immediately there had to be a way to introduce some speed to the run. Eventually I got up the nerve to send an email to LLCoolDave and make some suggestions on how to improve his Outcast run, with the biggest suggestion being to implement strafe running (a standard Q3 movement skill). After a while of no response, to which I assumed was just an ignored email, I just decided to start checking the site every once in a while and almost forgot about it.

Fast forward almost 2 years, and out of curiosity I did a google search for my name. Don't ask me why, I guess I was expecting to find something relating to my high school. Instead, the very first link I found was the description for the updated and improved run for Jedi Outcast. Turns out Dave actually did get my email, but Hotmail must've flagged it as spam cause I never got his response. Apparently just figuring out and using strafe jumping shaved 24 minutes off of his time, which at the time was a huge feat. Shortly after that I signed up for the forums, and since then have been a semi-active poster/lurker and occasional runner.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

Since the first project I wanted to work on was updating the run for Jedi Outcast, I received pretty much what I was expecting: a bunch of people excited to see the run get an update, nice remarks about the improvements to strafe running, a ton of great ideas, and (unfortunately) an expectation that I couldn't live up to. Since I was so new to running and planning, a lot of the ideas that were being posted I just couldn't do. The good thing is what I started is still going on and other users have since taken up the mantle to improve the run, so all isn't lost.

As for the runs I actually HAVE completed, the most criticism comes from me personally. But the criticism I have gotten have all been very helpful and never delivered in a wholly negative manner.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Not acting like a 12yr old is probably the best advice any new user can go by. Most of us here are very easy going so fitting in should take almost no effort. In the end we're all gaming geeks with a massive time-wasting hobby that requires almost no life..........oh wait, that's just me Wink

But one piece of advice I can provide is to have patience. Just because you don't get the immediate response to a forum post/thread/question doesn't mean you're being entirely ignored. Eventually you will get a response.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

Well, the first thing you should do is look underneath a poster's avatar (that person's forum picture) and if it says "Admin" then try to stay on that person's good side Smiley

Other than that, the easiest way to make friends is just to post on a thread. Provide something useful for a runner or just contribute to the many discussions. If you stop trying to make friends and post alongside the rest of us then friends will find you.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

That's something completely personal to each user, but try to go with something you're comfortable with. It's not really rocket science. A nickname your friend's had for you growing up is one way, even a nickname you achieved in school can work. Just keep it classy.

My forum name is semi-story based: Ever since I started playing first person shooters in 2001, I've been very competitive with it. So competitive that I became a bit of a rager (a person who chooses to complain about cheap gameplay and tactics rather than admitting better skill, aka a scrub). One of my friends made a joke clan called 'honorable' in Quake 3, with the name comprising the clan name and followed by your real name. The creator, Andrew, became honorabledrew, then there was honorableron, and I became honorableJay). As part of the honorable joke, we vowed to never use cheap tactics while playing and treat opponents with the utmost respect. Since we were duelers, we could only uphold the second matra, and used tactics like spawn camping to win whenever we could. Also, we never would openly badmouth other players while in a game or rage-quit. Even though it was a complete joke, I took it a step further since I knew my raging issue was a big hamper to my ability to play. So I stuck with the honorable matra and strived to make myself better. Nowadays I can't think of another name to go by. I've since shortened it and use honorable as more of a gamer's guild tag (Jay.h) but most sites don't let me use . as part of a name Smiley

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?

Well for one I would say it has to be readable and understandable. Trying to sort through 1337-sp34k isn't the best either (unless you're really good, and if you have to ask you're probably not). Tongue-in-cheek names are always fun. Sometimes just a simple name is best.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

Two words: Knowledge Base. There's a link for it on the front page. Some of the information might be a little out of date (and yes we're working on correcting that) but what is there is still very relevent. Aside from digging through that, you can always just ask somebody on the forums. I'd suggest avoiding spamming the admins with constant questions though. It's not that they won't respond, but a lot of their duties makes it difficult for them to respond in a timely manner. Find a few people on the forums that seem to know more than you and pick their brain. You'll never know everything there is to know, but you will learn probably more than you ever did in that history class you took in high school that made you fall asleep at your desk and wake up after the bell laying in a pile of your own drool making nose bubbles while people take pictures and laugh........oh wait........I'm rambling again.......

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

There are quite a few, but my favs for a while have been the Demon Rush and The Dictatorship.

Plays games quickly. Eventually.
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
My name is Jesse and I go by the tag Potato Handle.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I guess I'm a "lurking participant" I don't post of the forums much, but I try and get involved with a lot of the other stuff; streaming, participating on other's streams, watching/commenting on runs, I've done a couple of verifications, etc, etc.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
Specifically in the forums? I guess my role is trivial. To the community at large though I like to think that I try and keep conversation flowing in quiet channels, offer assistance where I can, etc. Maybe not "important" but certainly I try to be "helpful".

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
I did a run of Digger T Rock a while ago, which I posted in the casual section, 'cause it hadn't been run before, and I'd learned about some uncommonly known warps.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
The marathons. Great fun for a great cause, I enjoy every one of them and always look forward to the next one! Huge JRPG runs like Puwexil's FF7 marathon run last year motivated me to try one myself with Lost Odyssey.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
My initial speedruns didn't use w_split, and I was pointed to a site which helped me set it up so I could start using splits. Apart from that, just some general advice here and there.

If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?
I'm hardly qualified to speak on this, since I'm still pretty new myself; but participate in stream chats, be friendly and helpful, etc.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
As above really, participate and be nice.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
Doesn't really matter. At least I hope it doesn't, just look at my name, haha.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
I tend to prefer easy to read and identify names, whether or not they're more or less popular, I'm not sure.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
Google's a good source for stuff like this, I'm still learning some of them myself, but I haven't had to ask about much.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
Chikin sammich!
The original, since 2003.
Questions answered, in order from top to bottom:

My SDA name is Traysandor. Better known as Miles E. Traysandor.  My RL name I will not be posting publicly, that is information for close friends only. (And no, no one here knows it, so don't ask.)

I'm mostly a lurker, but I pitch in on random topics as I see fit.  The board is way too active for me to keep track of everything, so I mostly go for topics that hold interest to me.

I haven't really identified with the community personally yet.  More of a fan of various runs and matathons.

I forget how I found SDA, actually.  I think someone I know on an IRC chat from a different network linked up one of the speedruns and that's how I found this place. I check back frequently for any new runs posted.

I've never attempted or posted any speedrun attempts of any sort.  I'll admit, I'm very confused at the technology, what's required (probably out of my budget range) and someone would have to walk me through the process.  I would have a token interest in running some games I have.

As for fitting in, it's pretty much common sense stuff.  We don't expect you to be a fan of every game that's talked about here. I'm sure there's more than a few games here that you've either never heard of or never played but wanted to.  Pick whichever ones happen to be your favorites and go from there.  And if there's a game you don't like, you can post useful criticisms.. but don't be dropping F-bombs like you're on the Jerry Springer show - that's a one-way ticket to Bantown.

I'm not particularly social, so that question is best answered by someone else.

Picking a screen name can be a creative process.  Mine I literally invented by mashing up some common words together.  you can use your initials, parts of your name, maybe a favorite character, something completely random, or whatever.  As long as it's not offensive the user name will be accepted.

I have no idea what makes a screen name popular.  I suppose it's all on what you do with said screen name.

The handy acronyms and jargon are pretty useful.  Once you get a hang of things it almost seems natural I suppose.

I don't know of any memes specific to SDA, though the one I'm most reminded of is a Demotivational poster made during Startropics of one of the previous marathons involving a baby.  I can't think of any others offhand.
We all scream for Eyes Cream
First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:

Daniel Fitzgerald, or better known as Axel Ryman.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?

Mostly a lurker nowadays, but I pop in to post every time my interests are piqued.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?

Mostly depends on what the situation is. It can differ from important, in cases where discussions are happening in regards to SDA itself, be it changes to the site or future events, etc,  to not-so-much in cases of running games and similar things.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?

Around 2006 I believe. I remember still being in high school at the time and wanting to do a speedrun. I knew about the site but I never participated.

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?

AGDQ1, mainly because I did participate in it and felt like I was at home with a family.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

I don't remember exact details, but I think it would have to be for FFX. I know Other M was just a bad post by me going based off early impressions. I have been asked about things in my run, to which I explained my reasonings for doing what I did, or what happened.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Personally I say act mature. Know when you should stop, know when you should speak out, and respect everyone. The most important thing though is to have fun. It's not all about seriousness here. Some of us do like to be serious but that's just who we are, but having fun is the most important thing about being a part of a community.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?

Puwexil and SpikeVegeta for sure. They're great to chat with and friendly to boot. In fact, do that with everyone.
Ok maybe not everyone. Start with the games you enjoy to find people who enjoy them as well, and eventually you'll find games you'll probably be interested in, and then meet people who enjoy that game, and so on.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?

Well you don't want something that's overused and generic, and you might not want one that is just already used on tv, video games, anime/manga, etc. Simplicity is nice, and something clever is even better. Just remember that once you pick a name, people will refer to you by that name, so it will have to be one you'll gladly enjoy being said. Something clever like Heidman's example is definitely a good way to go though.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
Only pattern I can think of is if the person is really good at a specific game and the game is well known amongst the community.

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?

You can always ask. We know people won't be around at times to find out the acronyms and lingo we use, so telling and explaining it is really the only option. Of course we could always put a thing that shows all the lingo with explanations. Maybe the Knowledge Base of SDA?

I mean how many people actually know what TMRoTnnEfN7-RC:TOGotM-C2otHBSG is? (To answer for those who don't, its "The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa")

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.

The Venonat incident at AGDQ - The Nintendo Player's Guide(Or whoever made it) for Pokemon Yellow said Venonat could learn Teleport, however when SMK tried to teach it via a TM, the game said he was unable to.

Riku stole my X - During my Kingdom Hearts 2 run at AGDQ1, I was going to end the final battle via Riku's Limit. In an attempt to get the last part of the attack to be the actual finishing blow, I moved as far as I could, then started the Limit. Because Riku was next to the final boss, he hit him once, and got the killing blow. The words "DAMMIT RIKU!!! YOU STOLE MY KILL!!" Granted it's not cool like the Float incident or Bananawing Duckola, I've started using it whenever a bad thing occurs.

Arrow's Knee to the Groin - Not exactly a meme but I personally find it to be one and a hilarious one at that. AGDQ2 was I think around the time Skyrim was released, or at least sometime after, so of course the Arrow To The Knee joke was being overused. SDA just happens to have a member named Arrow, so of course "Arrow To The Knee" would happen. I'm not sure how many jokes were made, but at one point Arrow just said "The next person to make an 'Arrow to the knee' joke is going to get my knee to their groin." And that's why we don't become adventurers.

SDA Sleepcam - If you fall asleep in the middle of a marathon, and you're on camera, stuff will be put on you.

The Demon Rush - Best game ever and a must play.

2 Shots - Heidman explained this one the best really since it happened to him.

Best Final Fantasy - Cause everyone argues over which one is the best. We all know its Neskamikaze, which was indeed a choice during AGDQ2's Donation Competition for best FF.

This is the run! - Usually done during streams when a runner performs a difficult segment with ease. Usually the end case is NOT the run

This is the urn! - Same as above, but with a mispelling.

You are the man! - Usually given by whoever is reading the donations during a marathon. If you donate, you are "THE MAN!", regardless of the amount donated. Often changed depending on if the person is a male or female or even a mother/father/sister/brother/cousin/dog of a person attending the marathon.

Serious Time - Originated by The Dictator Mike Uyama who during the first SDA Marathon, Classic Games Done Quick, he told people to shut up during his Contra 3 speedrun as he wanted it to be up to his standards, and because it was a serious time. Now it is shouted during marathons when a runner needs concentration, be it for a difficult trick, manipulation of something, or just to get the quick kill on a boss so they don't waste a few seconds.

Marathon Luck - During marathons, things that never normally happen or never have happened just happen. The words "That's never happened before!" are usually recited shortly after, with either rage from the runner or laughter from everyone else occurring, dependent on what happens.

Mike Uyama The Dictator - Something that occurred with a now-banned user and Mike Uyama. The person said Uyama was treating the site and this place like a dictatorship instead of as a normal admin(at least that's what I think). The end result is we all agree that Uyama is indeed the greatest dictator around and his dictatorship is just the best thing ever.

God Hand - One of the greatest games to exist just for how over the top it is. Also whenever the ending is played, the room must sing.

Butt Tassels - Occurred during the AGDQ2 run of God Hand. Donations were taken for costume choices, and one of the choices had strips of cloth on the back near Gene's butt that flowed while he ran. And thus Butt Tassels was born.

Asshole Ryman - When the first part of my name is said, it sounds close to Asshole. Without seeing the spelling of the name, a person saying it could hear and think the name "Asshole." It has occurred to me a few times where someone would say my name is Axel, and people replied "Asshole?!" Thus I sometimes refer to myself as Asshole Ryman or introduce myself with "I'm an asshole, but you can call me Axel." Truth is, I'm a jerk with a heart of gold, so asshole can apply to me sometimes. This isn't a real meme Sad

7. Contribute your opinions to the forum threads, avoid flaming others and spam posting - the ban hammer awaits.
8. Just about everyone here, but my true favorite is Darkwing Duck. If you're one for Korean food, he will gladly take you out to eat. Also consider Carcinogen, Essentia and Puwexil for friendly SDAers. (Warning: don't get on Carcinogen's mad side because he will unleash his Carc Rage on you. If you don't know what this is, watch Resident Evil 4 from Awesome Games Done Quick 2011.)
9. Go with your gut feeling on screen names. All SDA names are unique in their own ways.
10. Cannot think of any pattern.
11. Everyone here can guide you with the SDA language.
12. Bananawing Duckola and Bananawing Piewexil.

Greetings, I go by MrSparkle.

I am somewhere between a lurker and an active poster. Almost an Extreame Donkey Diddler!

I've written for the front page!

I joined SDA after watching TSA's The Wind Waker speedrun, and wanted to do more with that game. Thanks goes to the people that put up with me then, and still do. I learned of SDA shortly after Twilight Princess first came out. Didn't get the game for half a year or so

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)

New person looking to become more then a lurker?! I suggest reading this survey, and answering what you can in the Introduce Yourself Here! thread. There might be some weird recursive thing to that? We might have a non gaming board soon. Whatever you do, get on SDA's IRC and chat your fingers off. Everything else follows naturally.

When thinking up a cool username, keep the numbers to a minimum. Also, think it through when picking a name, unlike  I did with what I used to use.

What is this split? Nothing to worry about when it comes to terminology.

I know nothing of SDA memes (doin good).

I'll not be in Utah any time soon, but that might be near the next SGDQ. Hope you can stop by!
inb4 too late

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
sda name is sonikku, my real name is kurtis, hi!

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
more of a lurker i guess, i don't have a whole lot to say in here

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
not important at all

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
the beginning of this year is when i first posted, i've been following these guys for a few years though

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
during the prep period for sgdq 2011 i got a bizarre idea to see if they would like one of my drawings as a prize for the marathon. it was my first actual illustration, and boy did i hate it. i was really disappointed and decided i might as well try anyway. much to my surprise mike uyama allowed the picture to be used as a prize, and i was shocked as all get out. i decided to make a few more prizes for agdq in 2012, and i was surprised that not only did people fairly warmly accept the drawings again, there was a surprising amount of people who still remembered the picture from sgdq. it was then that i decided to try to slip my way into this community if only because the people were so nice and helped me break out of my shell a little bit.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
i can't say that i even post enough to receive criticism, the people have been fairly nice so far though!

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?
i would say avoid too much nonsense posts (i'm guilty of those!). i imagine it also helps to read the stickies and use the search function before making new threads, etc.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
i'm horrible at making friends, i suggest being yourself, and the people that are worth getting in with will be your friends. it also helps to be willing to go out of your way and do nice things for people you feel you would get along well with.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
well, i just named myself off of a video game character who is very dear to me. you could always do the same, lol.

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
i suppose as long as you avoid way too many numbers and X's your name would be fine

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
you pick it up as you go, there's also a few websites that can be easily found that provide some good information on things like that. i believe sda even has a wiki which could answer some of those questions

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
i seem to remember something about chicken sandwiches, sammiches, or burgers from the marathons. i also tend to see something about D e e R F o r C e and W o l F T e a M only in sda twitch chats, though i have no idea what they mean other than W o l F T e a M being responsible for the EVANS

First off, I would like to get to know you a little. What is your name? SDA/screen name and/or real name:
Nicholas Chaput, known here as Mapler90210 or more simply Mapler.

What is your role in the forums? Are you a lurker, active posting member, moderator, admin, etc?
I'm an active posting member. I'm also working on adding some pages to the Knowledge Base and (hopefully) submitting some runs.

How important (in your own opinion) is your role in the forums?
I consider my role the most important. Everybody thanks the admins and moderators for their hard work, but there just isn't a forum without active members to contribute regularly. That said, there are those who are far more active and contribute far more than myself.

When did you first identify with the forum's community? Was there any time before this point that you knew about or were on the forum?
I've been loosely tied to this community for a long time. I started speedrunning in late 2007 and have lurked on this site since then. I think I may have posted a couple times anonymously, but I'm not entirely sure. I officially registered 2011-08-08 12:08:28 am, after becoming a regular of Romscout's stream and starting to speedrun Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

Is there a story or event that sticks out to you that caused you to become a part of the community?
I guess I covered this a little in the last one, but I've been in communities for a few different games as well as the TAS community, and that's generally given me some interaction with users of this site. After I started watching some users on twitch I made this account to communicate with people when they weren't streaming.

In the early days of your experiences with SDA, do you remember any criticism you received on the way you post, stream, or run? (Or even criticism on your posts, streams, and runs themselves.)
My stream has horrible quality. Other than that, everyone has been very helpful and I've never felt as though others were criticizing me.

Next, I have a few questions about the community. Hopefully you can help me understand a few things.
If I were to be joining the forums and entering the community, is there anything I can do to more easily fit in? What should I do to avoid sticking out and looking like a 12 year old?

Be yourself. If you're a complete immature twat, it'll show. If not, you'll be absolutely fine. We're all here to discuss and enjoy the games we love. It's pretty hard to do a bad job of that.

Because forums are very social places, I'll need to make some friends. Do you have any suggestions on who to get in with, and the best way to do that?
Honestly, this will happen on its own. You'll talk to some people more often than others depending on what interests you, and you'll either end up liking them or not. The only people to "get in with" are the mods and admins, but that's really just because they're great people who offer up their personal time to make this site function.

I do know Brossentia, who got his name from his sister, Essentia. Brossentia being a play off of Essentia's name. And Essentia's husband often gets called Essentia's Wife. How should I pick my own screen name on the forum?
This will be different for everybody. Your username is something personal. It needs to have meaning to you, and to be something you're comfortable being addressed by. Some people decide they aren't happy with their username after a while and change it. There's nothing wrong with that.

That said, my username didn't really meet any of those requirements. It came from a throwaway email address that I never really threw away. I got involved in a couple communities under this name and it just sorta stuck. I'm still not 100% comfortable being called Mapler in person Tongue

Since we're on screen names, is there any pattern you're aware of that makes certain screen names more or less popular?
The whole "personal meaning" thing tends to work out well. Usernames based off memes usually don't. Usernames like bu77fuck3r don't seem to stay very long. I wonder why...???

How about the handy acronyms and jargon I'll need to know? I've seen stuff like TAS, Split, percents, AGDQ/SGDQ, segmented runs, verifications. How does I speaking SDA language?
Just ask around. Nobody is expected to understand everything before they join.

Quick caution: TAS is a somewhat controversial subject for various reason and you'll get very mixed responses if you ask about it here. I recommend going to TASvideos.org for a better impression of it.

Now to finish off on a humorous note, are there any meme's (of any format, not solely image macros) that are specific to the  SDA community? Like Bananas in Ears, or Casting Float.
Lots. I don't like them very much, though. I'm sure everyone else has covered the ones I know about by now.

Thank you again for your assistance. If you're ever in the Logan, Utah area, let me know and I'll treat you to dinner.
Brossentia clearly didn't do a good job explaining SGDQ to you. Might want to start saving up...
