Not a speedrun, for sure. I've never really seen this discussed anywhere that I'm aware, as opposed to the more popular low % runs in, say, the Metroid series.

I just beat it with what I think is low percent. I'll tell ya, beating the bosses with the default master sword is a major pain the ass, particularly Ganon. It feels more like a butter knife than than the sword of Evil's Bane.

Here are some movies of me beating some bosses with barely anything -- Vitreous, Kholdstare, Trinexx, and Ganon. As an aside, I hope Twilight Princess can hold a challenge for someone who's been through the game like ALttP, but I somehow doubt it...

Anyway, is there anything unusual you can skip? I got all the major dungeon items except for the armors. I'm thinking you might be able to skip the boomerang...I can't think of a situation where you absolutely need it. I didn't get a bottle until Turtle Rock because Trinexx was giving me headaches due to running out of magic. Maybe you could get it if you hit every rod shot, but I didn't feel like giving that much dedication. Other than that, did I miss anything? Or rather, get too much?

The Kholdstare fight is somewhat embarassing, but funny due to my health. I was uber conservative on Trinexx, just because it takes so long to reach him (and I did the ice head first because Link doesn't find any iceskates during his adventure). Vitreous is insane if you try it without arrows -- you can sit there and continually swipe as you get swarmed by eight eyes. Sure, you'll hit them and slightly push them back, but they just keep coming and eventually you die. I also tried bombs, but it took more than I had.

Ganon...well, I played him a lot. I feel like if I ever do a run of this game I'm well equipped in terms of his patterns. Smiley The funny thing is that the normal Master Sword bounces off him harmlessly, so you have to perform the sword spin move to lightly tickle him. The only thing I screwed up is getting hit by a bat.

Wow, cool.  Watching now.
I'm addicted to games
I did it years ago. I called my file on the game that did it "Pro!!!!!"  Grin
Not that it's really challenging compared to some other zeldas because you still have to get so many heart containers.
Yeah, I've cleared it low percent. Trinexx and Ganon were the only two really tough battles. IMO Vitreous deserves no place at all. Mothula should get his spot. Seriously, if you want an easy win against Vitreous, try standing on the right wall about halfway between the back wall and the slime. Hit the sword button as fast as you can. Congrats! You took one or two hits and just took out the first form. Now as he emerges line up perfectly with him and fill him with arrows. Boss clear! I like it better than your method as you won't run out of arrows and it's safer.

That Trinexx fight made me sad.  Minimilist has 0 bottles, not one. Granted, it took me 50 tries but... If you enter with full magic you can miss one time with the fire or ice rod if you are at normal magic usage with no refills. It is what made the fight truly hard... Even if you needed a potion(which you don't), Green would be the correct color, not blue.

Kholdstare needed more spin attacks and less getting hit. Dash attacking is not the best tactical move.

That was a great Ganon fight. It's too bad it was tainted by a red potion.

Also, if you want more challenge. try using exploration glitches to fight the bosses at the extreme minimums. 3 hearts Trinexx for the win! I'll leave it to you to figure out what you have to do to pull it off, but I'll tell you it isn't easy, and you will have the fighter's sword so only spin attacks will hurt him. The magic might be an issue though...

Also, the boomerang is indeed skippable. It's not a big loss really.
"I like to watch"
I could never get the big bomb shop guy to sell the big bomb until I got the level 3 Master Sword.  How do you skip getting that?
Jack of all Trades
Rescue the smith's partner, but don't let them temper the SM.
Hmm, I was wondering, could the ice rod be skipped in low% with ether being used against trinexx?
The BaldurManiac
i do those things but with megaman zero... i look up to Mike Uyama so i play without any upgrades or cyber elfs with only the z-sword and the buster..

Im doing good too but I think i miss a huge part of the game hmmmmm....

If you liked this, now go pull out the GBA version and beat the Palace of the Four Sword bosses with the Level 2 Sword - Master Sword.

Have fun and don't swear or break anything.

And in case you're wondering - I've beaten ALttP on what I considered a minimalist run with no-damage taken, but for my own personal satisfcation.  To date, I've beaten LoZ, ALttP, OoT and Four Swords Adventures with no damage taken.
I know I could suceed it, I just need to be more cautious. Perosnnally, I hate Vitreous. I press the sword button fast and they eventually hit me, almost killing me... seriously I don't like it. The 4 Sword Palace, another story tough, I can barely doing it without a fairy when I got all hearth, red armor and Lvl 4 sword. Well, the 4 Link battle is easy, the 4 remake of the boss are not.

I've done only OoT and MM.

Scarlet, the trigger is supposed to be clearing dungeons 6 and 7.

A minimalist run has 6 hearts for Ganon. 4 hearts for the Four Dark Links. (Without "active" glitches. Skipping bosses is a "passive" glitch.)

TSA, did you HAVE to say that? I will now have to set aside a week working on a no damage run. And I thought that just doing a minimalist was impressive enough. . .

Marshmallow, check out Red Shifter's guide at GFAQs. Eh, he took it down. Maybe I can cajole it out of him.

As a different sort of run, has anyone else done a swordless game? It involves some minor glitching but it's worth it.
nice video, pretty cool to watch Smiley
I think it's possible to beat the game without the Moon Pearl.  You can turn back into normal Link by using a faerie to revive you under certain conditions:
In deep water
In any dark world dungeon

You can also turn back into normal Link by:
Letting a Wall Master grab you (skull dungeon only)
Also by visiting the Fat Faerie

Using this I think you should be able to make it to Ganon.

I've read it's also possible to skip getting the sword from your uncle by using Zelda's message.
Jack of all Trades
By using Zelda's message?

And wouldn't you need the sword for, say, the mountain tower boss?
Everything that can be hurt by the sword can be hurt by the hammer except Ganon who is a hardcoded exception. A sword or hammer strike is simply encoded as a melee strike(the two are grouped together since they are the only melee weapons) and then the actual weapon is referenced for power. On an interesting sidenote, the golden sword does not grant immunity from electricution from sword strikes, it grants it for melee attacks. So if you hit an electrifying enemy with the hammer after getting the golden sword, no shock. Before you get the golden sword, you'll be shocked. Since you used glitches to skip the swords, an exploration glitch to get an early hammer would be perfectly reasonable. I feel like such a nerd...

I just read the glitch guide on GameFAQs...a lot of emu only stuff there. But uh, I can't get any of the Bunny-->Link darkworld tricks to work. One requires being in Misery Mire, the other the Swamp -- you can't get to the swamp without the hammer, and you can't get the hammer while being a bunny obviously (without a weird exploration glitch). So uh...hrm?
Ok, you do have to do a weird exploration glitch, and almost everything you can do in an emulator you can do in a console, you just need different glitches. Your best friend is the jump and save glitch. The guide writer lied about how awesome it is. It disarms far more seldom than indicated; you can go on lower floors, enter and exit buildings, change worlds, and basically do anything that doesn't involve getting hit, dash bashing a wall, jumping to a lower floor, jumping in the overworld(sometimes, depends on ledge; jumping into the well in Kakariko does not count thankfully), or entering a room with a changing water levels(the swamp ruins in the overworld don't count, but entering Swamp Palace sure does).

In order to do a jump and save, just save and quit in midair from a jump to a lower floor in a dungeon. The best time to do this is after getting the Big Key from Hyrule Castle but before rescuing Zelda(just leave her in her cell to rot; getting her prevents you from getting the magic mirror later). But yeah, you should restart where you got the sword. Simply proceed with caution into Hyrule Castle and enter the room east of the entrance. Go up and hit the soldier. You fall through the floor into the zone. From here you can do anything really. I'd go into more depth, but you just have to play around with it. As a beginner trick(as in beginner to doing bad things to the game), I'd advise hopping into the bow room of Eastern Palace and exploring the overworld under the rain. Have fun!

By the way, it shouldn't cause any serious harm to your game. Once it completely locked up and erased all my saves, but considering how much I've messed around with it that's quite an anomoly and a very minor deal. the surfing bunny trick you suggested is much more dangerous.
May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce
Haha, Red Shifter was kind enough to show me where he now has his guide.

http://zeldaii.home.comcast.net/zelda_lttp_foursword_threeheart.txt

Aside from other glitches, what is the point of exploring the overworld in the rain though? (Been a while since I last looked at Zanapher's guide.) I've glitched out at the start of the game using Zelda's message and the missing items and people make it annoying. Of course, after glitching into Hyrule Castle, the rain stops.

For the record, I've put up a guide to beating the game (well, as much as you could in Zelda 1) swordless. http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/game/561559.html

I haven't investigated the SNES version for a swordless game yet because it requires a little more route planning. (The Lamp doesn't burn vines or curtains.)
welcome to the machine
I don't think there's a point to exploring the overworld so much as you can skip some stuff by doing so.  But you already know about that.
Well, the point is you can do whatever you want. For one, check Zora River and the Master Sword Grove for glitch enemies. Also, you can do literally anything. You can use EGs from the cave in Kakariko to get into most dungeons and get the treasures. This means you could just do an early EG to get the Cane of Somaria, for instance, and then beat the game using it as your primary weapon. You can fight bosses at new extreme minimums. 3 hearts FTW. Also, there is extreme entertainment in phase 1 Dark world as it has all the light world sprites with the dark world tile sets. It is useless(when compared to normal play; in glitch play it is incredibly useful), but boy is it cool. You also learn a lot about how the game was coded by playing around while breaking the rules. I mean, the possibilities of it are endless. It's seriously hardcore sequence breaking at the very least. It's also squeezing more gameplay out of a classic game.

I can say I've messed around with it quite a bit and have managed to get a rather crazy number of things. I think I'm the first person to get Bombos under the rain(it was hard). I actually am pretty close to completing the game in phase 1, but since I can't levitate my need for the forbidden hookshot is proving an issue(no flippers because King Zora does not exist means getting it the normal way is impossible, and the water changing rooms have some seriously messed up code attached to them that makes EGs impossible to work with). It's really very fun to see just what you can pull off. I'm still grappling with trying to either get the hookshot or complete 5 and 6 without it. I actually could do 6 in a very ridiculous way but that stupid ledge you warp in from in the overworld is actually hindering me.  5 is probably doable, but it seems pointless when 6 is so ridiculous and both need completion(I do have both dungeon treasures though). Perhaps I'm a bit too into Zelda, but I find it fun to be trying stunts like this.
May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce
Hmmm, I don't remember the Zora's River glitch enemies. Then again, I was focusing on the Flippers, so I may just have run past without noticing.

Yeah, I've had problems with water rooms myself. I can't stand that. . .

How exactly would you clear 6 without the Hookshot? (This ridiculousness you speak of.) I've EG'd in from 4, and Vitreous refused to put in an appearance. At any rate, what entry point do you use?

Also, have you tried any experimentation with the Lost Woods double bumper glitch?

I beat Misery Mire in an older speed run without the hookshot...
May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce
And how did that work in a normal speed run? I have been able to get into the palace easily without need of the Hookshot, and  even obtained the Staff of Somaria, but Vitreous, as I said, won't appear when I glitch in from Blind's Hideout. Should I glitch in from Kakariko Cave after stopping the rain?
