Hey all,

I'm thinking about a speed run on this game. What inspired me to do so was looking at the video of Crysalis, and the gameplay is quite similar in this game except theres no magic attacks like some of the other Ys games. Heres a plan I might follow:

1. Redmont Town

- Talk to people, recharge ring, buy short sword.

2. Tigray Quarry

- Get to the miner, use the Save-glitch trick to pass the slimes, and get the warehouse key.
- Get the Power Ring and start power-levelling.
- Kill Dulan with power ring and get long sword.
- Get to Level 6
- Use Power Ring to defeat the first boss (Gargoyle) at a lower level.

The gargoyle is really one of the hardest bosses in the game; is it possible to hit him without having him hit you?

3. Illvern Ruins

- Go back to Town and buy some chain armor and get shield ring, and an herb to withstand the owls, or buy broad sword if enough money (I may choose not to get the broad sword since you get the banded sword later on).
- Fight Owls in the ruins to power-level quickly to level 10-11.
- Level in the Lava Area if needed, getting herbs from the plant down there.
- Defeat Second Boss and the Dragon

4. Tigray Quarry Revisited

- Go back to town and recharge Ring, get Time Ring.
- Descend down, get Plate Mail, and kill the boss with either the Time or Power Rings.

5. Eldam Mountains

- Get Banded Sword from Dogi, then head back to Illvern Ruins and power level off the owls again (it will be much faster this time with this sword).
- Kill Harpy and then kill the next boss after.

6. Castle/Clock Tower

- Get all the battle armor, shield and the flame sword, and then kill the bosses (Garland might be difficult).
- By now I should be maxed out on level, and ready to complete the game.

7. Gabalan's Island

- Kill Garland (pushover)
- Not much strategy here, but to buy an amulet when fighting Gabalan would speed up his demise, and recharging the ring with Brocia's Secret Medicine will help if I need more power using the power ring.

Any thoughts?

This site needs more Ys (i.e. any at all) so good luck!

But first, I don't see how this Ys game has anything to do with Crystalis. IIRC this one is side scrolling, while Crystalis is top down.

You know more about this game for running it seems (i.e. what to buy, what levels to be at) than I ever did, but I can still say some things hopefully.

That blue gargoyle (forget her name)... I don't think there's a way to avoid her attacks while hitting her, and she's hard, but IMHO not as bad as everyone thinks. It's a war of attrition, and if you bring good HP and get up close, it should be fine. I think you should be able to go a little lower than level 6, but like I said, you know better than I do.

I tried a low level run of this game, and actually I got stuck at the Harpy, where I had to level up to continue.

Hmm, your levels seem kinda high for a speedrun (you max out for example). Do you actually need to max out a la Crystalis? I don't remember.

Talk to the Hand
I don't remember if it's strictly necessary to max out, but Galbalan, who is already up there on my list of "hardest final bosses ever", would become pure hell without doing so.

As for the Gargoyle, I'll have to see if I have any saves at close to that point and try and get back to you. EDIT: Nope, none. Sorry.

I think the comparison to Crystalis comes from the fact that you have to be at certain minimum levels to hurt stuff.

Oh, what's this save glitch you speak of?
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I went back and checked and level 6 for the Gargoyle is probably correct I think. I had forgotten about the lightning when you get up close. Yeah, pretty sure you can't dodge that heh. Although it does seem possible to win without getting hit (crouch in the range where she uses that wave attack, run in and hit and get back before you trigger the lightning attack, repeat), I'm not sure how feasible that really is. And in a speedrun, of course it'd be terribly slow. Get up close and bash is still the best.

Emptyeye: About Crystalis, that's true, but some other Ys games are top down and thus closer.

Hey all,

1. The "save glitch" is where you save your game right up close and personal to any enemy and then reset and load your game, and then the enemy vanishes. I found that this was the only way to get past the slimes quickly and efficiently at Level 1. I can't just run into the slimes, they'd pwn me.

2. I believe you do have to max out your level to finish the game, cause the last bosses take quite a beating before they fall. It would take much longer to beat the game at level 15 than at 16, and usually I maxed my guy the first time I fought Garland in the castle cause he's a tough cookie as well. (He's actually easier on the Island)

3. I'm doing a test run, and was able to get all the way to the warehouse key at level 1 without any problems, but I had to use the save glitch to get past the slimes. As far as fighting Dulan, I'm not sure how much I should level before taking him on. I can't kill the red bats, so I might have to level via the blue ogres, spiders and flies to a certain point. Gotta do some more testing. It seems the blue ogres are my best bet for levelling though.

[EDIT] The Red bats ARE killable at level 1, but only with the power ring.

[UPDATE]

I can kill the slimes with the power ring at level 1, they give 10 exp each and good gold. It turns out I won't have to use the save glitch after all to get past them. I'll just grab the power ring on the way there to the warehouse key. I had originally planned to go back and get the power ring and level in the red bat/blue ogre room, but it seems the slimes are better now.

I levelled off the slimes to level 3, and my ring ran out of batteries, so I had to make a town run to recharge it. At level 3, the flies and spiders now die in one hit so I killed a few on the way back. I still can't hurt Dulan without the Power Ring at this level, but I found a good spot to crouch and do some major damage. He killed me pretty fast once he teleported though, so I should have bought an herb in town. One herb does seem to do it though, I heal after he uses his teleport attack, and then I finish him off, and he levels me to level 4 and I get the Long Sword.

Now I can kill the slimes without the power ring; although they die faster with the power ring. I'm debating on whether or not to descend and level in the area with tons of slimes or just level in the area with only 3 slimes, since I might be going back to town again to get better armor to tank the blue gargoyle. Keep in mind now that I have no armor or shield (or herbs); just the power ring and long sword. The gargoyle fight is going to be the toughest in the game.

I just did some testing on the Gargoyle, and level 5 is the minimum level to hurt him without the power ring, but it barely scratches him. I think it would be worth it to level up to level 6 to speed his demise and to get some armor. Although defense increases more as I gain levels, armor still helps reduce the damage he does from his flying wave attacks. It is possible ot kill him without getting hit, but impractical.

Well, I decided to make a trip back to town to get the Chain Mail and Wood Shield and recharge my ring and get another herb after defeating Dulan. I did some levelling with the slimes to get the gold I needed, and then headed back to town when I had around 1800 Gold. Then, I descended down into the tigray depths and levelled to 6 near the Gargoyle's lair where there's a bunch of slimes.

The gargoyle fight was difficult, but doable now. I tried fighting him at level 5 and without any armor, and it's next to impossible to do since he kills you in one hit. His lightning attack only does 9 damage, but if you try to hit him and bump your head into him, he does 20 damage; ouch. There's really no graceful way or trick I can see to defeating him quickly, other than to hit and run just as any normal gamer would do, you can't hit him 2 times in a row before he starts hitting you with his lightning. But anyway, he died after a bunch of tries, so I made my way back to town again and bought another herb, an amulet, and got the Shield Ring from the old granny.

Making my way into the Ruins was easy; I just ran through the mages with the Shield Ring equipped. Once I got to the owl area, I levelled my guy up to 8 using the shield ring (the owls actually hurt). I'm almost out of batteries and I used up my herb, so I'm debating whether to head on into the volcano or go back to town and recharge. I think I'm going to go into the volcano though and start levelling off the firebirds near the herb area, because for each enemy I kill, I get one ring charge, and I should be able to get good enough ring power for the firedragon boss after levelling to 11.

[UPDATE]

I made my way down into the depths of the volcano into the herb area (that was half the battle itself), grabbing the small shield on the way, and then leveled my guy from 8 to 11. I had about 150 rings to do battle with the fire dragon, and one herb to use from the plant. Beating the dragon was all luck, since his movements aren't predictable; I had to turn the power ring on and off when fighting him. I used up my amulet on him as well when he showed his face, and then he died quickly, and I got the firedragon amulet.

Escaping the volcano was not too difficult (but by no means easy). The second dragon boss in the ruins was also easy though, I just used my power ring off and on when he swooped down to try and attack, and it hurt him pretty bad with him doing very little damage. I used my herb fighting him, but he's no trouble as long as you don't touch him. I left the ruins behind and got back to town, and prepared myself for the Cursed Tigray Quarry; I got the time ring, bought another amulet and another herb, the broad sword, and recharged my ring.

The monsters in the Cursed Mine dish out some pain, so I'll have to be very careful on my descent down into the mine. I'm going to get the Plate Mail on the way, so hopefully that wil lreduce damage enough for me to survive the boss, since he isn't too much of a pushover either IIRC.
No more progress?

I recently got Ys: Oath in Felghana which is a PC remake of this game. The soundtrack and and graphics are very nice. Smiley

I did play Ys III for a little while too, I found it incredibly difficult! It seems like you will have to upgrade your equipment whenever possible. I think getting an Amulet would be a good idea for Galbalan as mentioned, but is it worth doing the extra bits for the Medicine?
Yes, a ninja riding a tiger.
I really hope T-R comes back and finishes this.  This place really does need more Y's!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I loved that game, but I haven't played it in years, all I remember was that no matter what I did I could not beat the final boss without maxing my level.

Well,

I sorta gave up at the boss in the Cursed Mine. He dishes out way too much damage and I cannot kill him before he kills me. Slowing down time would make me valnurable, and using the shield ring only makes the boss harder to hit. Having low HP while fighting him is also a major disadvantage, since he can 2HKO you. Again, this is sorta a practice run, I might start over from the point in the Volcano. Nice thing about this game is you can save anywhere except at boss fights. Anyone know if there is a TAS of this game?

[EDIT]

My controller broke a while back ago, so I am sorta out of luck playing any games on my PC or SNES.

Anyway, for those of you that are thinking of doing a run on this game, here are some general strategies I learned from running:

1. Level grinding. The best areas to do it are:

A. Slimes in Tigray (with power ring)
B. Owls in Ruins
C. Firebirds in the Volcano

2. Ring Utilization. Use the power ring often to defeat bosses quickly, and get armor or use the shield ring to defend yourself from bosses that hit you hard. Make sure your ring is charged high at all times when needed. Killing an enemy gives one ring, so don't go back to town if you are level grinding and need more rings.

3. Hold Down and Attack. This kills off most enemies faster.

4. Minimize trips back to town unless they are required by the game. Doing so will save a lot of time.

5. Don't underestimate your enemies, especially in the later parts of the game. A speed run is no good if you die. Use the shield ring if you are getting beat up.
Does anyone know of a site with all the Ys time attack records? This would include all the other Ys as well. e.g) Ys - I, II, Oath, Ark, Origin, etc.
