I started a topic about this a while back as a requester, but didn't want to dig it up.

Anyways, I'm planning on running Yoshi's Island levels individually, getting as few coins, flowers and stars as possible.  I recorded a few today, and while I don't have times (Nate's recording FAQ has left me little paranoid with rewinding and such) - I'll list a little summary of each.

1-1 Almost identical to trihex's any%.  I intentionally lose mario on one of the jumping shy guys near the end to get my star count down to zero.  Mario will always float away opposite the direction you're going.
Score:0

1-2 Not much to say here.  Have to go the long way in the plane section.
Score:0

1-3 Annoying one - hard to avoid the red coins at the beginning without getting hit.
Score:0

1-4 Bosses are hard, especially if there's a delay between landing the killing blow and mario coming back to you.  Also of note is the section with many red coins over a stretch of lava.  On the return trip, hit the big guy and wait a tick before heading back so the rightmost platform isn't too high, letting you avoid the coins.
Score:0

1-5 On rails, kinda boring.
Score:0

1-6 When using the jump balloon, go under the trail of coins.  Lucky the ending section has a popping 1up balloon to knock Mario off.
Score:0

1-7 At first, there seems to be a flower you can't avoid near the middle ring, but you can jump over that entire wall.  Grab a shy guy, go left a bit to the big yellow structure, spit it out onto the highest part, jump on it, and start doing flutter jumps to the right.  Kinda difficult.  At the end, you can minimise the stars you have by getting hit at the 'secret' area and traveling back down the pipe when you have zero, then running for the ring.
Score:3

I also tried to get a 1-8 done, but that boss is pretty damn hard.  I accidentally killed him too soon with 3 stars left (+2 unavoidable red coins), but I'll improve it.  I need help, though, with a better strategy for him.  Right now it's just too random.

I'll work on more levels tomorrow.

Roboticus is Champion!
I believe it's only possible to get zeroes in the GBA version of this game, as the SNES version allows the baby Mario timer to continue counting during the end-of-level animation.

EDIT: Which is probably why this's in the 'Newer Consoles' forum. =)
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
These seem to be mildly amusing:

1-2; what do you mean the "long way?" You can mimic my shortcuts on my 100% perfectly, the jump where I get the 3rd flower, you can skip that flower if you time your jump right (see the SS for that).

1-3; Concerning the red coins, those can be avoided (see SS). Just walk foward, and bounce of the biting turnip #1 and #3.

1-6; just mimic what I did on the SS to get the fastest way to avoid the coins on the jump.

1-7; Hmm, this one actually seems interesting, I look forward to this one. Wink

Just as a reminder, the topic was here
http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1125223386;start=0#0
where I linked to Gamefaqs, which has a low score guide
http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/game/561566.html

Min% on SNES will actually be easier, since you only need to bring the timer down to 5 by the end. But make sure your scores are the lowest possible, because if someone does a lower score, it'll replace the other one, even if it's much longer.
Tri hex, on 1-2 he can skip the flower, but not the red coins. Thus, the long route.
I like this site name cause it's easy to remember.
I helped with some of the low score guide, so if you need any extra tips I can definitely help you out. I also tried a low score game on the SNES version, but the lowest possible score there is 4.

Yeah, I remember reading that.  The faq writer went nuts trying to get low score on Sluggy the Unshaven's Fort.  All these complicated strategies about egg-throwing and pixel-perfect jumps to skip these two red coins, when you can just hover-jump over them.  Trihex almost made it in his SS.

The bouncing blob of pacifism finally abided me a zero.  It's kinda sloppy, but that battle relies on luck mostly anyway.

A few more:

1-8: To avoid the three red coins in the red spinning room, lure the bandit over from the lower-right to the floor beneath the auto-spinner (? i dunno what to call it).  Super-bounce off the left side of his head and hope to land on a platform.  When I get to the boss, I have no eggs, but the level will generate an enemy for you - just hope it lands on your side of the blob.
Score: 2

2-1: Best option for getting hit off at the end is to grab a shy-guy earlier in the level.  Need to spit and re-eat once to make sure Yoshi doesn't auto-digest.
Score: 0

2-2: Same as the any%.
Score: 0

2-3: Need to collect three eggs total to skip red coins at the start of the underground part, one for each barrier.  Leave the bottom row of squares on the third mass of grey and put a lantern ghost on it.  Jump on that guy to reach the 'roof', and skip all those coins in the middle.
Score: 0

2-4: As opposed to luring a ghost guy over at the part with a stair cloud and no eggs, just place Yoshi under one of the 3 eggs at the left, extend the tongue and jump at the right time to grab it through the wall.  Easy boss.
Score: 0
Bump and an update.

Dunno if i'll keep giving a little summary of each level; the GameFAQs page tells you pretty much everything as the routes aren't much different.

Working on 2-8 now.  The run-killer here is the ride on the arrow balloon, with a hard to miss red coin.

Oh, something you should know, I think (Not 100% sure) that Radix'll only create a table for min% runs only if EVERY single level is ran at least once. Hence why Marsh had to do every level for 100% in order for a table to be created.
Here's a pro tip: Don't record over your runs.  They won't come back.  :wallbash:

Currently redoing 2-5,6,7.  Got a nice 2-8.

I was planning on doing every level (secret and extra included) before sending in the tapes.  Wait until you see my 6-S ownage (assuming I don't fill a two-hour tape with mistakes).

You'll need a 2h 45m SP tape. My run clocked at below 2 hours, but your's will include the Extra and Secret levels.
Or you could use more than one tape.
I can't wait to see 5-S Roll Eyes
Is that true about the tables? Probably a good thing, so that there won't be any spaces left over if players don't feel like finishing some levels.

I heard that's what happened with the Katamari Damacy runs; either submit a run for every star, or his would be put on hold until someone submitted the remaining stars.
Yeah, I just leave the mistakes in.  1-1 had 7 mins of mistakes, 1-4 I got on the first try.  3-1 had 22 minutes of glorious failure until I did another run on top of it (made sure not to erase anything important).

Redid the ones I erased, and got 3-1 and 3-2 down.  The Nepenuts are next.

And I checked out 5-S to see what was so exciting........ Cry

Just that it's the shortest level, so probably the least exciting.
Although, if someone 100% it, it could be one of the longest levels.
Oh, pfft, thought you meant Kamek's Revenge, not Items are Fun.  Roll Eyes

Sorry for not posting for such a while, deer season was all last week.  (I totally thought I got one right in the shoulder too...he must've using hax....)

3-3 was hard.  Lots of randomly moving mobs.

3-4 was easy.  Lots of staticly stable objects.  Get hit after the fourth hit on the boss.
Jeez, if I don't update every day, this thing gets shoved to page two...oh well.

World 3 is done.  I hate hedgehogs.  They seem to grow at random, making it impossible to eat and ending the run.  I do like boss battles that are normally skipped.  Teh Piranha easily has the coolest intro in the game, and it's always skipped!

If someone could at least feign interest in my progress, that would be nice...

Welcome to my world.  *Cough*  People who have nothing to contribute often don't post in the first place.  Don't think just because you don't a bajillion replies that people aren't interested.

My DMC3 run thread only has one other semi-active poster besides myself, the Mortal Kombat Sub Zero Mythologies has like... three or four, they just post a lot back and forth because they have a lot to contribute.  The Zelda thread has a low number of posters too that contribute frequently, as does the Half-Life.  Sure you'll get the occasional "Can't wait for this!" from the more casual players, but they don't tend to linger in the thread spamming the same support.  Check out the Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, it becomes annoying when a single poster does nothing BUT give encouragement.  It's appreciated and it's nice to know when you have an audience that's honest to god interested in your run, but you don't need to post it 3 times on the same thread's page.

Yeah, Psychochild beat me to posting on the matter. If anyone has ever noticed, I only post in topics where I actually contribute somehow. But I've been keeping up with your updates. I'm eager to see the craze on these Min% runs. I might have to outdo a few. Wink

I hope not.  These things are freakin hard.  I want my name to stay there for a while.

4-1 especially has me in a fubar state of mind.  I'm not sure 2 is even the minimum possible score.  I know you can wall climb tooled run style up past the small passage with the two coins entirely.  I even tried sliding under them by ducking, or ducking while riding a smooshed goomba, but nothing worked.  The rest of the level is hectic enough, anyways.  The 4-1 I got is just barely up to snuff.

Trihex, what do you use to time your runs for your tape info table?  Stopwatch, guessing?

EDIT:  I now have 4-2 and 4-3 done.  4-2 requires a little 'double jump' trickery (pressing A twice quickly) to avoid catching some stairs, but is otherwise a pushover.  4-3 includes stunning 3 flowers to walk right through them by throwing eggs at just the right time.
Be-bitty ba-butty bump.

Good news! I got 3-8 done! What? You say I already had that one recorded?  Well, I recorded over the last five seconds of it......yeah.

4-4 is not done.  4-5 is.  See? I can sequence break too.  Tongue

I didn't smack Milde like the little bitch he is because a) I'm still hashing out how many of the miscellaneous hits and nearly unavoidable stars are acceptable in a run and b) I kept getting to the end of the tape, not only stopping a couple good runs, but rewinding! I need a capture card...

So that's two tapes done.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
For my single segment, I just used my VCR timer to figure the elapsed time. For my individual 100%'s where every second counts and accuracy is very needed, I use a stopwatch, specifically, this one: http://proft.50megs.com/stopwatch.html , tracks to the nearest hundreath of a second. Wink

As for your 4-1 delima, I'll try a min% of the level and see what you're talking about. I'm assuming you're referring to the 2 red coins next to the last flower. (Checks to see)

grndino: 2005-12-06 08:07:45 am
4-4 is down! Fuck yeah!  I do get hit at least once, but it's so rare I get past the northeast door with getting a coin that I was still in a state of shock that I might actually get past this damn thing.

Thanks for the stopwatch, Trihex.  Even though I upped my window of errors before rewinding to 25 minutes (and passing it several times....), I only used seven minutes of tape on this run...yay for conservation.

Now I get to move onto an even more impossible run: 4-8 and its two nearly unavoidable red coins.

EDIT: Also got 4-6&7 done, if you want to know.  The latter has a really neat trick involving bullet bills!

EDIT again: whoever moved the double flowers in 4-8 from the bottom-sides to the top, I hope you burn in hell.
Cool, glad to see you're keeping up with this. I must say I eagerly await the finished products.
Then you'll get all mad when we point out a level that could have a lower score. Grin Tongue
this would be cool to watch...

I think I'm about to have a heart attack.

On to World 5.
