I will redo two segments, since I found a better route. It made me so ashamed that I just have to record it. I would lose my face if I didn't fix this. It's in the first canyon level, and the idea that I have is to use one extra lift at about half-way of the whole level, and then do a fall slide. Judging from the video that I have, it should be more than possible, and should save 2-4 seconds.
Also found another shortcut, but this is in a segment that is very hard to reproduce exactly. I will not redo that.
I messed around in the cabin fight level, and found a way to get
a) on top of the tall mountain b) on top of the cabin (kinda cool ) c) underground (you can fight enemies through the ground, but they can't hit you you can't get up, though) d) on the cliff where the enemies spawn
but none of them are useful in terms of speed. There is a huge invisible wall roughly at the line where the middle of the cabin's roof is. This line can't be passed from anywhere. In fact, the whole level is surrounded by these kind of walls. I thought that it would be possible to get to the end without having to do the cabin fight, but I don't think it can be done because of the walls. If anyone is interested, I can make a crappy video about the glitch with my bad Fraps. I will work on tearing up the canyon levels tomorrow.
I found two shortcuts in the first Canyon level. They both involve getting over a wall you're not supposed to get over. One is located where the three RPG guys are, and the other is found when you keep running forward after you've come up the first wall (with the 3 RPG guys). They're both quite hard to do (for me), but I'll practice them both a lot. These should save about 30 seconds of the Canyon level time, and perhaps one second from Canyon #2 (I pick up an extra medkit since it's right on the way so I won't have to hunt any in Canyon 2)
I thought that I'd redo the ice levels as well, since I'm going to start recording anyway, and they're not that hard. I know a faster way in Emerald Roof, saving about 4 seconds. I don't know when this project will be finished since I'm quite busy because of my job at the moment. Well, it's better to work on this a bit more than to send a run that I'm not happy with, right?
I found a way to get past the trigger that triggers the spawns for the 3 guys holding RPGs in Canyon 1. If I get it to work, it should speed up the level a bit more since I don't have to snipe them with the magnum anymore. I also found one more shortcut at the end of Canyon 1. I think it saves about 5 seconds, which is a lot.
edit: I timed an almost perfect run of Canyon 1, and got 1:30. It should be less than 1:30 with a perfect run. Excellent!
I recorded a very good run of Canyon 1, and the time was 1:25 This is even better than I thought it would be. It's almost 40 seconds faster, which is crazy! I thought it was as good as it could get, but this is just absurd. I also recorded the following level, Canyon 2, and the time for that was 1:48, again. I think I did it a bit better, but I didn't catch a big difference. Maybe some tenths of a second.
edit: I'll update the post with the route, so if you're interested in what I did, and how, go check page # 3.
edit # 2 : I redid the Canyon 2 level, and got a time that's better by 5 seconds (1:43) ! Woo! I realized that I don't have to kill the guy on the cliff with the RPG at all since he doesn't hit me if I move fast (and am lucky). I'll probably redo both of these levels tomorrow, since now that RPG that I collected in Canyon 1 is useless, and only takes more time go get. I need a perfect run of Canyon 1 where I don't get the RPG at all, and then I'll need to do Canyon 2 again without using the RPG at all. Should be easy if I get lucky in Canyon 1.
I just finished recording Canyon 1 all over again. The new time is four seconds better, since I took a more risky approach to the level. I also did Canyon 2. The time I got for that was 1:42, which is one second better. I decided not to jump down but to drop down in the beginning and that saved me a second.
edit: I also did Emerald Bridge, and got a time of 1:27, which is ten seconds better. Emerald Roof got a time of 2:22. That's 12 seconds better. Only three more levels to be done!
I've got this short-term job right now, so I'm pretty busy with that. I'm writing this message from work What did you have in mind? Just send me a pm so people won't hate us for bumping this post all over again.
One more thing about the run: Muona decided to redo his Sanctuary Garden run. It should be easy since he took no hits (that are (very) hard to reproduce fast) when he did the previous run. I hope the time will be cut even lower!
I've decided that I'll redo the three levels I did this morning again tomorrow morning. I should be able to shave off 2 seconds from the Carrington's Cell level if I'm lucky. I made a small mistake in it, and since I have time in the mornings, I just might as well do the levels all over again. I'll try to get the same time in them, so nothing is lost, but all is gained. woot. 8)
edit: I marked potential re-dos of some levels just in case. I'll see how much Muona has time to redo them, but there's no hurry Check the list on page 1
Now I've redone the three levels. The times I got are:
Carrington's Cell: 4:50 (I was super lucky at one point, 8 seconds better) Cable-Car Station: 2:07 (I found out a better way to do one thing here, 4 seconds better) Cable-Car: 2:58 (again I found out one thing that's faster, this is 5 seconds better than the last attempt)
I'll mark these times in the table on page 1. Not much left to be done! ^^
I also redid my fight with the Mongoose (or is he Mangoose? Or La Mangouste?), and got a time that's six seconds better than the last time. In other words, 3:20. I improved a few things in the level, such as
- the first (and only) grappling hook technique at the start - going to the air ventilation tube - the drop down to the nuclear silo thingy. This was the major improvement. I decided to go crazy and try a drop from where the cart should stop (since there is no cart), and then attach to the ladder at the very last moment. It worked! - the last part of the Mongoose fight, with the AR grenades
Yeah, there's one segment for a level, so 33 in total. I updated the time count; now it's 27 seconds lower than what it used to be. 1:37:30 in other words. Since I started redoing the run, it's gotten better by 2 minutes and 7 seconds, I think. The recording should be finished tomorrow, after which I can start sending the run. I know I've said this a few times before, but I have a good feeling about this
I was thinking that maybe I should upload a level into YouTube. I don't have time to compress and send them all, but one or two would be good. Is there any level you'd like to see in particular? My favourites are - Canyon 1 (I'm very satisfied with the route, it's just awesome) - Canyon 2 (This level has a huge drop that I'm very proud of :). Also a couple more interesting things) - Submarine 1 (This is so weird since it's supposed to be a long stealth level, but in fact is the shortest level of them all) - Sanctuary Hall (Muona knocks out #2 here ) - SSH1 Base Admission (I like this since it was quite tricky to figure out the route I use here. In the end I sneak past #2 and the President lamely) - SSH1 Final (this is THE fight with THE last and hardest boss in the game, and he hits me like twice. It's got to be the cheapest boss battle in any game, ever!)
Let me know, and I'll upload levels when I have time.
edit: wow, I'm a Qualified Donkey Diddler now. I have no idea what that means, but I think it's better than a Junior Donkey Diddler.
I just had a crazy idea about the SSH1 Final level. It might be possible to take a shortcut in the beginning. If the windows on the right (that lead to the control room) are not bullet-proof, I might be able to sling over to there using the grabbling hook. Then I could go into the room with the computers pretty early. I'll see if this is possible tonight. It might just be
Btw: wanna check if you can break the windows? Or should I do it later?
I checked if the window in SSH1 Final was bulletproof, and it sadly was. On the other hand, Muona found a better way to do the Sabotage level. He could make it all the way to the end of the submarine before the bomb exploded. He did this by using an improved method of speed swimming.
Speed swimming, you see, is based on XIII jumping out of the water, traveling in the air for a moment (this is the fast part), and then falling back to the water again. XIII can also get out of the water by swimming against an edge. This has the same effect. If you combine these two, you get twice the height from an ordinary water jump, which means that you can get aerial acceleration up to your running speed before you fall back into the water again. When this is done consecutively (which is a bit tough without taking damage), you fly over the waters very fast. Well, it's not THAT fast, but it still beats ordinary swimming!
edit: I would expect a 10-70 second time save with this trick, which is excellent.
