HELLO!
Do you care about the save states?  If you don't, then there are alternatives like the Everdrive.
Ciento Dos Huevos
Don't get an everdrive, I have one and it's shit. Lot's of bugs in the mappers.

Mine works for most of the stuff you'd expect it to -- so not that well on FDS, expansion chips, or certain special mappers. What problems are you having?
HELLO!
I'd heard about them through Simpoldood, who used it to run FDS Zelda II. Worked well except the FM channel code still needed some work.

Powerpaks are in and out of stock literally all the time. I think bunnyboy just does that when he needs time to focus on other things.

I wouldn't mess with alternatives...Powerpak mapper implementation is almost certainly as good as it gets.
HELLO!
Clear advantage of Powerpak is definitely the third party savestate mapper set.

No support for Famicom and FDS-specific addon hardware, but for a speedrunner the savestates are generally going to be super important.

I've got a video on my twitch where the map completely changed when I played FF1, I'll try to find it.  This is among other things.  I've had weird glitching in mega man 3 also.  Overall the quality and bugs in the mappers is just shit compared to the powerpak, everytime I report bugs to krikkz he doesn't seem to give a shit either and just blames other things.

Ah here it is, at the 4:55 mark:

http://www.twitch.tv/ilikeyourbootybutlmnotgay/b/447472412

I've had this happen several times, there was corrupt map tiles and I couldn't move up anymore.  This is mapper #1....this fucken mapper is super simple to implement and crap like this happens.  This is just one of the many games where I've had weird things happen.  I got sick of that crap happening, and just went back to my powerpak.

Looking to get some kind of NES flash cart myself in the next few months.  Is the NES PowerPak considered the best model on the market these days?
Speedrunner
I tried it and it seems to be one of the better choices and it looks nice. :3

For a long time it was the only choice and it's benefited greatly from being around for a long time and has had much more focus on it the entire time. bunnyboy is NES through and through even though there's a SNES Powerpak as well. Krikkz has developed I think 6 different flash cards in the past couple years. I've heard mixed things about the Everdrives and my Genesis one died for no apparent reason, but it was replaced easy enough and the guys at Stone Age Gamer were totally cool the whole way through. On the other hand, bunnyboy is notoriously difficult to get in touch with for any reason. When my Mega Everdrive works (admittedly this has been always for the past ~18 months except for the month when it was being replaced), I like so much better purely because the save system isn't a pain in the balls which I imagine carries over to the NES everdrive as well, but I'm not certain. For the Powerpak, you need to copy blank files onto the card to even have a hope of saving and then remember to hold reset for a few seconds before powering off to transfer the save and it's annoying. not really an issue with NES games tho. SD cards are easier to come by locally, but you can buy a CF card with the powerpak and even a usb adapter if your pc doesn't have the requisite inputs.

I've got 2 powerpaks (NES/SNES) and 2 everdrives (GEN[but also works with SMS natively+32X with the addon] / N64) and outside of the annoying save files on the SNES and the random death of my mega ed, I can't find too many faults with any of them. If you want a SNES flash cart though, I'd recommend the SD2SNES for max compatibility. Even bunnyboy admits it's a better option than his card, but availability is pretty nonexistent/ waiting listed last I checked. It wasn't out yet when I was buying mine Sad
HELLO!
Puwexil, Powerpak is the best choice for speed run training, by far, because of the third party savestate mappers.

The ability to  load state, save state, reset, switch between different saves/save states, and switch games all from the controller is really handy.

But it's in such short supply that I do like to point out the Everdrive as an alternative if youd on't care about that. Some people are fine with emulator savestate work.

I just spoke with bunny, he said powerpaks will most likely be in stock next week.  He said the computer that runs his mill died which is why there has been none in stock lately.  But the ETA he gave me was next week.

As far as everdrive vs powerpak goes...I've got 3 everdrive products.  Turbo everdrive, N64 everdrive and this N8.  I bought the N8 because I heard it doesn't have the same power draw as the powerpak when using a RGB PPU for the nes (which it doesnt) so you'll see less video interference.  The problem is the mappper support is ass.  No MMC5, and bugs in the current mappers.

My turbo everdrive has never worked...I have an unmodified turbo duo and the games all come out corrupted when writing to the flash, notified krikkz he gave me a replacement...does the exact same thing.  He says region mods and such cause this, mine is unmodified, store bought myself in 95.  So that's a crock of shit.  He never tested his design enough on actual consoles.  All he has is a single pc-engine and turbo grafx.  So instead, I use this:  http://www.gamingenterprisesinc.com/Flash_HuCard/ which works 100% reliably on my system.  Looking to sell my turbo everdrive.

My N64 everdrive, will randomly erase sram, and I've heard several others complain about this (I have a v2). No idea why it does this, it just does it.  I've lost a conkers, super mario 64, and paper mario save about 6 times.  Wish I had gotten a N64 drive instead.

My experience with everdrive products have been that they are cheap...but you get what you pay for and it's the last one I'll ever buy.  Everytime I contact Krikkz he'll blame everything but his product.  The fact that he touts the Goodset for roms over the no-intro should tell you something.

The problem with the powerpaks is they are just older in design and functionality.  Having to hold reset when powering off in order to save SRAM is kind of annoying.  Slower loading times, which to me personally is negligible as they aren't THAT much slower.  Larger power draw on the system.  Having to use a CF card could be a downside but I never had a problem with it, but finding these in the future could prove to be a pain if yours goes bad.  Third party support for both the SNES and NES powerpak is huge.  The powerpak mappers have been improved significantly since its first release.  And the SNES powerpak even has third party firmware that fixes a lot of the issues.

But I've never had problems with games working on the powerpaks.  It's never deleted my saves, and it's never failed to load a game it claims to support.  So just throwing that out there.

Also, if you're gonna buy everdrive products, don't buy from stoneage gamer unless you like having your eyes gouged out.  Order directly from krikkz at shop.retrogate.com.  It takes about 2 weeks to get to you since it's being shipped from the Ukraine, but at least you're not being overcharged.

I just want to counter and say that I haven't experienced the horror stories that ConHuevos has, but damn that sounds like it sucks. My cards have been fairly reliable, but it seems like you may want to steer clear? I'm glad I'm not the only one to find annoyances with the powerpaks too.

I also didin't think that Krikkz sold everdrives on his own. I think the european site is just another 3rd party reseller, but if they're cheaper then I was an idiot buying from SAG. I'll defend SAG's customer service all day long though. No questions asked, they sent me a replacement for my dead cart which was pretty nice.
Ciento Dos Huevos
Retrogate does the selling for Krikkz (based in germany), but the items ship from Krikkz himself.
Balls jerky
Well I'm the idiot then. I bought both my cards from SAG.

Doesn't make you an idiot, I just really hate how much they raise the price on those things, their deluxe versions are a joke and usually cost $70+ more.  At retrogate most of the everdrives have an option to buy the PCB + Cart for $60 less than you'd pay at stone age.  They seem to have lowered bare pcb prices but some are still more expensive like everdrive N64, SD2snes, etc...

I bought bare pcbs, you can order blank carts from retrousb for cheap.  $5 more for a translucent cart, not $70 like those fools at Stoneage charge.  The everdrive image I got from krikkz's forum, The SD2SNES is something I made in photoshop in 2 minutes haha: Just cut the hole and they fit fine, my labels are poor quality because I never bothered to get them laminated, don't really care about it anyways because I change designs often.

It just comes down to being informed, not to being stupid.
I was googling for SD2SNES labels and i seen that you used the label that i made for the N8 that is awesome! I'm glad you like it as much as i did.
