I've never done a speedrun on anything before but I'd like to give Quake a shot after running through the game a few times. I had a few questions about speedrunning Quake...

1. What ports of Quake are runs allowed to be done on? (I'm currently using Quake 1.09 with GLQuake 0.98, is this okay? (Also, are these the latest versions?) Is there any other superior port I should switch to? If so, please state why)

2. How much should I play before I attempt a speedrun?

3. Any tips for a new runner such as myself? Any helpful tricks, binds or console commands that'll make speedrunning and playing Quake in general much easier?

Thanks in advance for looking at my thread and I apologize if this is the wrong section to ask these things in. Cheers.

I think mostly everyone nowadays uses JoeQuake.

I wouldn't put a time limit on how much you should play before attempting a run.. just until you think you can beat a run.  I personally started with the bunny comparison maps (e1m1, 100m, etc.) and tried those until I could do them pretty well.

Here is a list of several frequently asked questions, many involving useful tricks:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/faq.html

You can almost certainly ask any more questions you have after you read the FAQ.
And if you don't like JoeQuake like me, then use ProQuake, just make sure you keep the fps at 72.
Thanks to both of you. I'm really enjoying JoeQuake, it's such a huge upgrade from GLQuake.

I have two questions:

1. What's the command to get rid of auto-weapon-switch? Google isn't being very helpful.

2. How do I install the hi-res hud elements from the JoeQuake page? There's a wad folder with PNGs inside but no readme.

Thanks again, I'm having a lot of fun with this. Smiley
For highres stuff, create a folder called textures in your Id1 directory, that's where you can put the highres textures. Inside that folder, create one called "wad" and place the highres hud elements in there. As for the auto weapon switch, I don't know, just try to avoid getting new weapons and or assign keys to switch weapons more easily. And look into downloading textures (and models) from the Quake Facelift project and combine them with the FuhQuake pack (the one used in the Rabbit Run). That'll add some nice eye candy to your game, just make sure you have a fast computer.

autoweaponswitch is actually programmed in the qc, so it would take some kinda hack on joequake's end to change that

ProQuake isn't a valid port for Quake speedrunning. We only accept demos recorded with JoeQuake and the official id exe's. The official exe's and JoeQuake are already capped at 72 FPS, so don't worry too much about that.

As for the 100meter run Relomy mentions, look here:
http://speeddemosarchive.com/quake/otherdemos/demos.php?records=bunny

It's what all runners are using for practising their bunnyhopping skills compared to other runners. Getting under 11 seconds can be hard enough, so just practising until you get a comfortable result.

You can do something simple like this to bind each weapon to a key:

bind MOUSE1 "+attack"
bind MOUSE2 "impulse 7"
bind MOUSE3 "impulse 6"
bind ALT "impulse 8"
bind e "impulse 5"
bind 4 "impulse 4"
bind 3 "impulse 3"
bind r "impulse 2"
bind f "impulse 1"

Put those in the autoexec.cfg (located in the id1 folder). You can also rename it to something else like myowncfg.cfg and then execute it from within the console by typing "exec myowncfg.cfg".

That's what I have my weapons bound to.

And just a few things to follow up on my two previous posts. You can always come ask us questions in our IRC channel, we'd be happy to help you out :-)

quakenet.org #qdq

As for which demo you might be able to beat within a short amount of time (read: without having to practise relentlessly), maybe one of the 25 oldest records on the site would be a good place to start.

We're in the midst of setting up a "getting started" guide for those new to Quake, hopefully we'll have it done within a few weeks.
I'm not saying to use ProQuake for speedrunning, I mean just using it as a normal client.
P.S How do you keep graphical enhancements on JoeQuake?

Thanks a ton for taking the time to post all that. I had no idea that SDA has such a wonderful community. Cheesy

EDIT: What's the best way to practice bunnyhopping and other tricks?

100m.  About as wide open of a map as you can get.

Unzip to id1\maps.

What do you mean "keep"?  As in you turn them on and then the next time you open the JoeQuake client it's back to the original graphic settings?
The exact opposite of that, picking the settings out on the options menu and keeping them that way forever.
The way I did it was to permanently set them with my autoexec, that way they're where I want them whenever I run the game. I don't know if ALL settings can be set through the console though.
By the way, what kind of speedrun are you doing? If you're trying a whole speedrun of the game alone, that's VERY BAD IDEA since you're up against demos of people who've played this game for around 8-10 years...

I don't plan on beating anyone else's times. Just my own until I gradually get better.

I'm having a hell of a time learning how to bunny hop. It seems like whenever I'm changing my strafe direction key in the air my character loses a ton of speed.

EDIT: Cannot get less than 14 seconds on 100m, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong... I gain speed very very slowly.

Here are two dzips that are filled with completely random dzips of me slowly getting better at bunny hopping on 100m, random demos of different quake players on 100m, etc.  The most helpful may be the p0m0q0 sets, which are explained by 100m_ginko.txt (Flavio Quadros).  I'm not sure if these will be of any help to you at all, but mainly all I did to get better was to watch others and see how they do it, then try and incorporate the stuff they did into my own style.

Files that end in *.dz (and *.pak) can be opened with dzip.

Note:  The yousendit links only last for 7 days, so if you're reading this >7 days from now, say whattttt.

Edit:

And like Stubgaard said.. most of my questions were answered by visiting #qdq back then.. though the channel is less active now, many people should be equipped to answer any of your questions.
Thanks, I'll watch them right now. It seems like I'm perfectly mimicing what I've seen so far but I'm not gaining as much speed as I'm supposed to be. Is my sensitivity too low?

Perhaps.. I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 and I use sensitivity "16" whereas for Counter-Strike I use between 4.0 and 4.5.

Basically the way I have my sensitivity set up for every game is that when I drag my mouse 1 foot (12 inches) across my desk, I'll turn 3/4ths of a full circle. Is this too low?

EDIT: http://rapidshare.com/files/253257047/halp.dem.html Here's a demo of how much I currently suck. Please critique the hell out of it in any way possible. Cheesy
Make sure you have -dinput on your shortcut, and your sensitivity should be between 16 to 25 (I use 20).

Go back and watch the very beginning of your demo, specifically the first jump.  See how when you begin to strafe, the speed meter goes up to 439 at one point in the turn?  That's probably one of the if not the most important part of bunny hopping - the first jump or as my roommate and I call it, the "accel jump."  Speaking of speed meter, you do have it turned on, right?  (show_speed 1)

As for the actual bunny hopping, it looks like you're holding forward.  Beyond the first jump (not counting forward tapping, which comes much later) you should never ever be holding +forward.

Here's a 19 second demo I just recorded showing some accel jumps.  It's done by (somewhat obvious) holding +moveleft and +forward (a + w) and moving the mouse to the left or +moveright and +forward (a + d) and moving your mouse to the right.  I'd say at beginner's level that anything above 400 to start is decent.  The bunny hopping FAQ will probably do the best text explanation.. other than that I can really only offer the demos I uploaded to show how to do it.  Let's see what you look like when you aren't holding forward.. because if you aren't holding forward you're almost forced to use the strafe keys to gain speed and move forward.  And like the FAQ (or was it Stubgaard?) said.. you want to always be moving the way you are facing.  If you're going left, you want to be holding a (+moveleft) and if you're going right you want to be holding d (+moveright).
No, I'm not holding W. I know how to bunnyhop I just can't do it well in Quake for some odd reason. I can do it just fine in Warsow and CS. I've read the bhop FAQ and everything and that first jump was shit I know.

Yes, Quake's bunnyhopping is quite different from other games'. I actually hold +forward all the time while hopping but I don't recommend you copy my style. Roll Eyes
