I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
My name is Chad "Chadmen" George.

I'm a Youtuber, currently over 1,000 subscribers before taking a break from Youtube. I've recently rejoined the World of Warcraft community and my passion for speed running games such as Zelda, so I figured I would combine the two together to enjoy playing World of Warcraft while speed running it. This was first thought of in Vanilla, or Original Release of World of Warcraft by Kungen who did the Human livestream race from the time of loading screen to the time in which he got below the chains in Blackrock Mountain. I timed this run at 24:31, a world record in the speed running community. Recently, I've come back and with some research of new items available, I went through multiple attempts, roughly 100 to get a nearly impossible record to beat running my strategy. The video link is here:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC211qFbdKwbZxtkGKizeGjw

In the current world record video I do the following steps:
Worgs
Spies
Level 4
Northsire Mountain Escape
Jasperlode Completion (Level 5)
Tower of Azora Death Warp
Redridge Lake Cross (Bridge)
Burning Stepps Death Warp
Blackrock Mountain
Molten Core NPC
*End*

WHAT IS IT ABOUT WORLD OF WARCRAFT THAT MAKES IT HARD TO SPEEDRUN
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- While it is true that running World of Warcraft at a fast pace is hard due to leveling constraints, it is also noted that in order to qualify any speedrun, it has to be from a characters original loading cinematic, ie first login
- There are too many different categories you could run World of Warcraft for, yes, but that is the beauty of it, many individuals can take time, fun, and open more eyes up to a different type of speed running. If the video above doesn't convince, idk what will!
- Currently, World Record to get the Duelicious achievement is only 26 seconds! That is insane, something as simple as winning a duel is a category, reaching 10 is a category, different types of requirements, specifically, it is all up to the runner.
- There are more racers than you may think out there willing to run this game, but finding them is hard.
- The running community is more focused on PVE and PVP aspects of World of Warcraft, and speed running isn't common right now among those individuals.

WHY WORLD OF WARCRAFT SHOULD BE SPEEDRUN MORE SERIOUSLY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- With a release of a new expansion there is new routing and it is a fresh time to start for players to learn routes, much like I have in the World Record video above. This is a great way to spur up a new type of speed run.
- World of Warcraft has possibly the most insane outside variables and RNG possible, such as xp drops, loot drops, player interaction, and much more, these interact with the player and make times a value when they are beyond average times.
- The RNG, or Random Number Generator, in World of Warcraft generates models, or NPC's, that interact with the player inside, making a good time more valuable in means of difficulty and RNG.
- Many of the Acronyms from other games actually tie to World of Warcraft, such as Phasing, Death Warp, Rolling-Air-Slide (RAS), and other terms. They are easy to pick up among the already-present speedrunners.
- My video above shows purpose in what this community is looking for and needing, and I'm willing to always be a challenge and update this thread. I'll be posting many strategies and World Record footage.

Acronyms that already exist in other games: Death Warp (DW), SS (Super-Slide), HEAR (Hyper-Extended-Air-Roll) [Monk-Only], and many more, there's also terms like, "Phasing", "Scene Buffering", and "Lag Clipping".

I'm looking forward to replies, and comments on the video and the thread! Also, if you do have a Twitch, or Youtube channel and require art for your tutorial or speed run videos, please, email me at chadmen1884@gmail.com to recieve artwork.
Thread title:
some people on twitch to runs of leveling characters from 1-100, you could do ILs of raids or stuff like that

if running it gets popular, i could see it making it into a GDQ.
Snow Problem
wow man! Just wow! I really hope this takes off! Not only do I lvoe pouring my life into a game that I pay money for, I am obsessed with watching others do that for my amusement as well. I mean, have you ever played a game so much that you feel like you've run out of replay value? not with WoW for me! And with people like you coming up with additional challenges such as beating a game as fast as possible, scoring as many points as possible or pushing a multi-player game to its competitive limit, I find myself thrilled for a NEW ERA OF SPEEDRUNNING. I mean, WoW has no scoring system, it's not multi-player. It is a single-player journey through an epic wow. So how fast can you beat it?

My name is moofin, and I will be subbing to your channel. Consider me sub 1,001!
Totally rad
Why not run something that actually makes sense? Instances are fixed and can be done repeatedly. Makes a lot more sense to run those than come up with incredibly random categories.
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
@ Naegleria, that is exactly what I've had in mind. It would be great to see like, say, one of the fastest WoW players get to level 20 and solo a dungeon that is meant to be completed with 5 level 20's. something insanely difficult, or traversing hard routes.
@ Moofinmoofin, thank you so much! This community needs to grow and needs to be a stronger community in World of Warcraft, there are set rules to how you play WoW though in speed running!
@ AdamAK, the reason why instances are not yet considered speedrun-worthy in WoW is that they have to be done via fresh character. Time officially begins on the loading screen of a character creation, and there are world records concerning areas of the game like getting to level 10 as fast as possible, 60 as fast as possible (Single Segment, or Break-Splits), there are many ways to file them under different categories, and there is already a huge player base for the game.

The reason why WoW would work as a speed-running game is that there is already so much to do within the game, and there is technically a way to start a timer to see how fast a certain task can be done.
Ideas for other players to try are:
1) Character creation to level 10
2) Character creation to level 60 [and so on]
3) Character ceration to a certain achievement within the game, which there are over 12,000.

With there being over 12,000 achievements, this technically means there are over "12,000" categoies, but clearly over 11,000 of them are outside of players reach unless they tend to do a 4-5 hour run to get level 70+.
So what makes this game speed-run worthy? The game can be trimmed down so well, as far as optimizing a better speed, and true world record speeds would be just that.
As Cosmo said "I am not Siglemic" when he refers to the skill to play a game at its competitive and fast-paced environment, WoW is not easy, and is a speed running challenge waiting to be tackled.

I look forward to all of the responses I see from the SDA forums, please keep em coming or even your own videos or ideas you'd like me to tackle. Kungen started this movement three years ago, and I'm wanting it to take off now, lets make it happen!
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
Just as an update, the next record I'm going to go for is fastest character creation to level 10 (doesn't matter which race) and also fastest night elf creation to blackrock mountain, utilizing gliders and lag buffering to clip up walls you're not supposed to get up to glide half way across the map, etc. There are many tricks to the game, and I'm going to make it my challenge to introduce to the speed running community there are many races that can be made in this game. Hope everyone is having a good day, I'll be updating later with the video, and possibly links to other individuals videos for their WRs. Current WR for fastest level 10 completion is: [12:14]. That is going to be another tough time to beat, but I'm going to try doing it in the upcoming day or so. I've already been practicing those routes, if any other players play World of Warcraft, please contact me possibly for a race if you like speed running WoW like I do!
HELLO!
Respectfully there will never be over 12,000 meaningful categories for a game.

You're never going to come close to doing any meaningful optimization to that many categories. So they effectively don't exist, and you should probably preclude them as possibilities individually, because they just don't make sense.
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
Oh, of course. Some players must know what is seemingly possible in a speed run and what isn't. Since all speed runs in World of Warcraft start at the time initial login, it is possible that anything level 60 and below, which can be gotten to in 3-4 hours, is worthy of a speed run. This means that any achievement available in the original areas in the game, and achievements (new and old) that have been added recently, are eligible for a speed run if they are under level 60. This being said, there are roughly 50 to 100 different races you can do, and essentially more than that if players wished to specify it by different race and class.

My ideas are as follows:
Speed run to certain levels; ie: 10,20,30,40,50,60
Speed run and complete a certain dungeon (solo).
Speed run and complete an achievement (solo).
Speed run and complete a certain quest; such as Hogger (solo).

There are some records, such as fastest time to recieve "duelicious" which is simply dueling another character and winning, this is WR is at 26 seconds. Some are fast, some take awhile, but thats the nature of the game. There is so much versatility and many different strats as well.
So what's the current record for Any%?
Snow Problem
Man, this gmae look cool

i wonder if its tru that u can go to indochina or indria (that's in the game right? haven't played in a while) and you can talk to a doctor and ask him to drain the human blood out of your body and replace with animals cause its cheaper than buying mroe human blood? (There was something like that in the game).

man runs like this b eing so SHORT and MEANINGFUL make me wonder about worgen buhology and worgen physicality
Get over here!
Hey maybe you should talk to Athene. He's the king of paladins and record holder in everything forever in WoW. I'm sure he'll have some swag strats for you. He's always breaking those records like it's nothing. Maybe you could even try raid speedruns with just like half the people or something. Man that would be sweet.
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
quickest 0-90 (with DLC) should be damn quick i mean all you need to do is the £40 Glitch (also know as the $60 glitch) and you have the record!

Honestly ... too much RNG ... well not RNG just...... other player interference for runs to ever be considered comparable , not to mention possiblity of "luck" with someone else "randomly" attacking the same mob you need to kill for a quest giving you a boost when it's actually someone you already know or the opposit where you could have someone being a complete douche to you during a run.

as for 12,000 catagories .... lol who wants to make the leaderboard? anyone? no?
Wow. Just wow. Don't think I've ever seen a speedrun of this game or any MMO. Would be interesting to watch any%. I wonder if Jaina is as op in this game as in other WarCraft games.
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
@Onin - Lol, I wish there was Any%, technically Any% is level 100 in terms of experience, which is currently 5 days 12 hours 10 seconds played time. This is the fastest in game-time, but not RT.
@moofinmoofin - I luv wen yu rply to da posts, u mke me lif meninful. tnk yu.
@ShadowDraft - Unfortunately, all speed runs in WoW take place and start at a characters initial log-in into the game, this supplies the character with gold, BoA's, experience boost items, and much more to give them their initial start in the game.
@Judgy - Well, as I've stated, all the original records took place starting from a characters creation, as speed runs were first started in WoW in 2005 by Kungen in WoW's original 1.0 release. RNG is a factor like in many other games, also, it is possible to play on a vast amount of different servers for all different types of speedruns, the video above is a video based on Kungens old run in the day where I took my old WR and beat it in a video comparison, and all the strats I did in the video were faster than Kungens original run through as a naked level 1 human. These are the differences that make a run more optimized, and with this being the final expansion, there is no more scenery patching which means all items and skills in the game, as of right now, are stable and glitches will not be altered in code.
@Freezard - I'd love to see a Any% run, technically a any% run will be available at the end of this expansion. The fastest way would be to RaF to 90, Powerlevel to 100, and then get carried to heroic final content. That is technically a any%. Would probably be a 5-10 hour run if played near perfect with a group of synced runners.

The main rules of WoW speed runs really are:
Timer starts at the initial login of a character, before the cinematic plays.
Time ends once a player has completed a task, such as reached a level requirement, or an achievement or reached a zone/npc.

Also, I'd like to add an update, if there are any individuals who use Youtube or Twitch to spread the love you have for speed running, I can produce and create graphics designs for your pages, just ask here or email me at chadmen1884@gmail.com! Thanks!
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
I'd like to go ahead and say some "thanks" to some of the individuals who have commented on my speed run, talked to me via messages, or anyone who has contacted me about graphics.
Being home-bound sucks sometimes when you're sick, give me some WoW speed run ideas you'd like to see, or contact me for some graphics to spice up your channel on Youtube, Twitch, or any other website with some fancy HTML!

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Since no one pointed this out and it doesn't look like you searched for it, here's an old topic I made earlier this year on a similar idea. https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/world_of_warcraft_non_raf_no_dungeon_no_bg.html

Also to note that people do in fact race MMOs. It just typically gets ignored because no one wants to take MMORPGs seriously.

@rudyxx

Thank you very much for your reply! I tried searching for, "World of Warcraft" but did not search the additional; details! As for your thread, I love it! It is exactly what speed running this game should be about. It is possible to do it, and it is possible to do leveling races, and there are many categories for speed running: BoA%, RaF% (w or w/o BoA), Solo, 5-man, there are different types.

I appreciate you pasting the SpeedRunsLive race concerning WoW and Tera. I also play Tera but not at a speed running level, World of Warcraft is currently where I'm putting a lot of running hours right now. Rudy, be sure to contact me if you wish to have a race at my YouTube or at my email previously listed in the thread. We could do easier speed runs, say 10/20, or could do longer or objective based.
Pac is Back
Seems a little ridiculous to make categories for stuff like running to a place, but I'm not against the idea of speedrunning WoW at all despite it being very different than traditional speedrunning.  I did a solo 1-60 run in 12h 58m on the day of Monk release (people have actually run that category more seriously and have better times than that obviously) and I did some dungeon IL's a while back for fun.

If you want to go beat all these times in current expansion, here's a compilation of the 26 classic dungeon runs I did.

If you wanted to do speedruns for the game, my opinion is that NG+ IL dungeon/raid runs or new game leveling make the most sense (1-60 is interesting to me because it was the first level cap and it's cool to see how fast it could be done now, but for easier racing and stuff I'm sure you could run 1-20 or w/e you want).

But just making random runs of like "I created a character and went over to this place" or "I did some random 20 second achievement out of the list of 10,000+ achievements" are probably not the right approach if you want this to get more popular Tongue
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
Hey Matt, I'll actually see about going for your record improved. I'll probably be doing it tomorrow! It is in real time probably a few hours, 2-3 due to flying and travel time in a single segment run. I'll probably do that, but if I'm doing purely dungeons, I'll try to beat it. Now all classic dungeons actually could be a good format to race from non-fresh toons.

If possible, it would be best to try it with items and even more to improve run speed. I'll give it a go.

@mattBLiTZ - the idea of creating a character and going to a certain place, or doing a certain achievement, was the Vanilla WoW version of Speed running, as 60 (cap) and even 10 back then took multiple hours and days of grinding and was started by Kungen. When running to Blackrock was a really hard run to do at a perfect time, I've simply tried reviving a simple challenge, nothing that requires to much knowledge of routing but just the land. Instance runs are only subjective due to "gear" making it easier and shaving seconds.
Well, trying to make the point of instance runs being subject to "gear" and such is a bit unfair seeing as you are using heirlooms in your run to Blackrock. Both fall under the problem of having very little hope for competing if you don't have a max level character farming.
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
The only reason that I say that gear is subject to rules; in terms of dungeon running, is that there are players who specifically don't focus on the end game, but BoA's are acquired throughout the players leveling experience and Justice/Honor points, which are ultimately the easiest currency, (besides gold for guild BoA's) and there is a category for BoA or non-BoA; however, there is no current system to state what can and can't be used in a set of dungeon runs.

There are a few views I have on dungeons if they were to be run, it would basically be that to do the 26 dungeons above, you also have to do them with flying and travel. It simply can't be clips of dungeons, still impressive to show off though!

There are only a few categories that I can think for the game right now: BoA%, Questing%, Freshstart% and Max%. There being four main ways of having different categories.

BoA% (with or without is defined by the runner) - this type of run primarily focuses on the use of heirlooms or not to complete certain tasks or achievements within the game during a speed run.
Questing% - this is a type of run that is going to primarily focusing on  the leveling aspect of the game, and the ability to do it all quickly. This will also test the runner's routing ability of the world.
Freshstart% - this would be the type of race that I would be promoting most of the time, it is a race involving a freshly made character and a task must be completed and is usually defined before a run.
Max% - this would a category that is primarily focused on for players with max level potential, or are great at the end - game. If running instances (solo!) is your thing, then do it!
I speedrun World of Warcraft, &Zelda
Just wanted to toss an update out there for some of the individuals who may be following the World of Warcraft speed running community and threads:

There have been 6 races that have been finalized as "race" or "RTA" categories which include:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Racing from Level 1 to 100 (Non-segmented, /played).
2) Classic Dungeon Master (Segmented ~ 3 hours, Non-Segmented ~ 45-1hr).
3) Burning Crusade Dungeon Master ~ 45min. - 1.5hrs.                                            Separates into 2 categories: Heroic and Normal    Can be segmented or not. 2 WR's.
4) WotLK Dungeon Master ~ 1hr 15min - 2hr.                                                          Separates into 2 categories: Heroic and Normal    Can be segmented or not. 2 WR's.
5) Cataclysm Dungeon Master ~ 1hr 30min - 2hr 30min.                                          Seperates into 2 categories: Heroic and Normal    Can be segmented or not. 2 WR's.
6) Races to Level 10,20, and completing certain achievements: (Arbitrary)

I think that these are really solid races, it allows max level potential to clear as fast as possible. Also, the low level races allow for individuals who have no max level toons to participate as well.
There has been speculation as to why WoW should be ran in the first place, and really, it's just a great MMO that deserves more attention in this community, because there are definitely some categories that are worth representing.

Anyways, more updates coming soon, pushing another toon to max to get ready for some speed runs as this character I'm leveling naturally has more skills and abilities that allow them to speed through dungeons faster, I won't be going druid however. I think its just the most overplayed speed running toon that is available, and I believe that monk can actually outrun them. Monks almost have 50% speed+ uptime 100% of the time. Just depends on how the character is played.
