I will be speed running with a game called Drakan: The Ancients' Gates for the PS2, and I am having a bit of trouble knowing when the speed running will start. I saw in the rules that speed runs start when you are able to control your character, but would interacting with the game by skipping opening cut scenes, leading to controlling your character, count as the official start of your speed run? In short here is how it is broken down.

1. Click "new game" which leads to a 30 second load screen, before the first opening cut scene.
2. A few opening cut scenes that I can spam START or X to skip, leading to about a 5 second load screen, after the last opening cut scene.
3. After the brief-load screen, I can finally manipulate and move my character.

Does the speed run start with scenario 1, 2, or 3?

Thank you for your help.

Get over here!
I assume there's no run for this game yet so I'll roll with your explanations.

Before I do that though let me tell you if your run will be the first of it's kind you can decide on the "best" starting point yourself. If there's a community or at least some other runners then it would be best to organize with them.

Now to your question. I would go with go with option 2 since you can skip the cutscenes.

What you could do is time the initial load after selecting "New Game" and let your timer run backwards from that point. Since it's a console game loads should be equal.

You could also start with scenario 3 but technically you're in control of what's happening once you're able to skip cutscenes.

Hope that helps.

If you want to submit to SDA, then for SDA purposes we go with 3. If you're going with usual rta timing, it's either 1 or 2 as it differs depending on the person (some like 1, some like 2) and therefore the game's community.
Alright I will be sure to go with 3 with my option for SDA purposes. Thanks for the help. If in other gaming communities, where to choose option 1 or 2, I would still have the whole raw footage to suit their preferences. Wink
