So what you're saying is, no finger grooves, and you want me to replace the Griever engraving with some sort of hentai thing. Consider it done. Man, you people are weird.
When in doubt, use explosives.
Make it subtle, like a huge dong on the Griever engraving. Cheesy

Jokes aside, the only thing is the finger grooves. Make them go poof and you're home free. I'm so psyched about this thing, I just can't stand it! thumbsup
For the Griever on the chain part - I think you can still get relatively cheap Squall necklace replicas (like $10 - $20). They are made somewhere in China, and you see them often on EBay, link related. They come with the Griever ring, too.

Yeah, its kinda cheating but actually making that part of the gunblade would be extremely hard even for a very skilled metalworker. I have one of these necklaces and the quality is decent enough. The metal is a bit dull, but I'm sure that can be polished more easily than making one from scratch with the same design/quality to it.
When in doubt, use explosives.
If you have that very item that you linked, how is it on the other side? As we discussed earlier in the thread, there's a necklace out there that has a flat backside which would be anything but optimal to stick on the handle.
The back is indeed flat.
Still, I would think that to be a better solution than attempting to make one seperately, given how small it is and how much detail is involved. You basically need an entire metal stamping cutout to make the design, not to mention that you would need to make the mold in the first place.
It just occurred to me that it wouldn't be too hard to make molds to cast Grievers out of lead. Or chocolate, for that matter. Now who wants one?

Anyway... I did some drawing today and I realized that I don't have to scale the GB out of proportion at all. I was originally going to make the handle and gun part to a realistic size and then, presumably, have to scale the blade down to make it a realistic size. This is no longer the case. Based on that fine image that Chokehold provided, and without any change in proportions, the GB will be about 30" long.
When in doubt, use explosives.
I'm helping! Cheesy

Bump.

Hope everything is going well with the gunblade, Tom. Let us know if there are any complications or issues or chocolates we can assist with.
Haha thanks for the offer. Progress is slow given that I'm still in school full time, but other than that, no problems.
Yaarrr gunblades ahoy! Ten there be, as any a man can see.

(This is essentially a pirate-themed game, yes?)

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean. Please elaborate.

These are made of 5/8" thick, 304 stainless steel. I chose 5/8" because that's about the thickness of the frame on a large frame revolver like a .44 magnum. The 304 doesn't mean much as far as the buyer is concerned. That's just a common grade that's fairly easy to machine, and made to be welded. This is important because the blades will be welded to the frames.

Obviously these are very early in production. I have to do a lot of machining, polishing, etc. I will attach wood grips to the handles. Not sure what wood yet. One thing's for sure: these will be heavy. Even now, they weigh 3lbs (1.5kg).

I assume he means that little vertical red mark near the center of the top photo.
Wow. Sharp eyes. That's rust. Being 304 SS, these things don't rust, but they were cut out on a waterjet. The rust must have transfered from some debris on the table. The finished gunblades, being made almost entirely out of 304, will have no such artifacts.

The other materials in question will be wood, for the grips, brass, for the rounds in the cylinders, and whatever the griever pendant is made of.
So close, but still far to go.
I see there are some red brickstones beneath where the photo has been taken. Is it possible that the red line on the photo is caused by the red bricks?
Good thinking, but no, it's from the waterjet. I noticed it before, but I didn't actually notice that it was visible in the photo.
I heart SDA
Hot damn, Tom! Those're looking great!
Haters gonna hate
I never played FF8, but I am so hype to see the finished Gunblade!

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thanks UA.

I am so totally psyched about this here build. Would love to see more updates on progress. Keep up the good work, Tom! Smiley
Thanks for the support everyone. I didn't realize when I started this project what a huge following this item (or game) has. I'll post more pics when I have more to show. Don't expect anything for a few weeks though Sad
Wow, badass thread.. keep it up brother.  Gunblaaaaaaade <3
I did some CAM work today and this is what I came up with for the Griever engraving on the blade. As you can see, I've decided to forego the stainless steel in favor of this new material that's green on the outside and yellow on the inside.

The blade will be about 3.5" (9cm) high, and the engraving will be about 2" high. I will likely engrave these next week, so let me know now if there are any objections.

It's too bad that this won't be done for SGDQ. I just recently learned that FF8 is on the schedule. It'll be weird offering this as a prize in January when the game isn't even being played.

As always, your work looks amazing. I really can't wait to see the finished gunblade! It is a shame one won't be done for SGDQ but, well, I think it'll do well at -any- marathon, the gunblade is that cool. Grin
My feelings on The Demon Rush
What Mercury.Com said, this prize would do well at *any* marathon. I can't wait to see the final product.
