Awhile back, I was looking around on GameFAQs. I found a site in someones sig called Metroid2002. Since I was bored, I went there. I couldn't believe my eyes when I seen how good people where at Super Metroid. Then, I seen something call a "Speedrun". Confused, I clicked on the link and found out that Smokey had beat the game in...38 minutes! I later found out there where a ton more videos. After watching about 15 of them, I browsed around and found this site, which is the best Speedrun site I know.

So, how did you first start getting into speedrunning? What was the first one you watched? If any, what was the first one you made?

I'm addicted to games
While I tried super metroid runs myself when the game came out, the first one I saw was quake e1m1 100% nightmare skill in 1:32. Totally blew me away, being a keyboard player at the time (and for the next year to come, heh). Edit: forgot to mention that that was early december 1996.
Did I shoot 3 times or once from different angles
I'd always been amazed when my brother told me he had a friend who beat Resident Evil 2 in 2hrs.(The kid even recorded it and sent it to us so we could see it) That was the first time I was amazed by the idea of someone beating a game fast. Later(about 2 years ago from now) I saw the japanese Megaman 2 run. I swear I cumed when I first saw that :o.

I saw the link to the video at Megaman Network and in that same news post he mentioned Metroid runs. "Could there be people who make these amazing videos on a regular bases", I said. So I went looking around on the internet for legit' speed runs and eventually I found SDA.
Your almighty lordship
Radix and his 1:37. I still hate him for ruining my life (or love him for showing me the light I can't tell which).
Hey Ho Let's Go
It was back in '97 when I discovered the Quake done Quick movies. I've been speedrunning Quake myself ever since, but it wasn't until August '99 I sent my first record in.

it was qdq, definetly. I don't know when exactly, but someday when I was bored I was randomly hitting links, stumbling upon sda and the newly formed "Other games" section. From that day on I've been hooked.

That famous Emu-raped SMB3 run by the Japanese player got me into speedruns. I never saw a speedrun before, and was blown away by that run. I later figured out that it was 'faked' and found this site, and was blown away by the legitimate runs. My first run was only a week or two ago, Hitman: Contracts.
I'm indifferent towards YaBB 1G - SP1!
RandomEngy's half-life 45:45 video was what brought me here. Someone told me about it, and I found this site when I looked for it.
I ended up wasting like 10 hours that day just downloading and watching runs  Shocked

Quake done quick with a vengeance was probably the first one I saw, but I didn't really follow up on that much. Then later, I saw the 1:37 video for Metroid Prime and started watching Metroid speedruns on Metroid2002.com. I found this site soon after. I saw the uber Super Mario bros. 3 video at about the same time, so I like emulated/faked/tool-assisted speedruns as well.
The Only Legend's I Know Are Dead!
I never thought anyone did speedruns on a game because i just never thought of it. So about a year ago i was thinking, while playing Super Metroid,(not MGS, shocking i know, dunno what i was thinking, anyway) hey i'm pretty good at this if i tried i'm sure i could complete this game in a couple of hours. So i went through the internet to see what kind if any people do or have done on Super Metroid. How wrong my couple of hours theory was, i was blown away by Smokeys 36 minute Demolition of SM, and my jaw still drops even today. (I never touched my Super Nintendo again!) lol
MarioKart64.com biotch!
I was reading EGM and there was an article about speedrunning which linked to SDA and ever since i have been watching them. Prior to that i found the SMB mario run and was blown away.
I got mine out of the EGM article, too.
I had always been awed by seeing videos of people beating games really fast. And this was a dream come true. Cheesy
I immediately went online and went to the address mentioned in the mag (back when it was in planetquake.com) and now here I am.
Got a bit bored with playing quake 1, wondered about trying to finish it quickly, googled, found qdqwav and was completely blown away...
Hell is where the heart is.
April 98. Wanted to play some Quake. Found SDA. Been here ever since. :-)
Not going to school today
I also saw Morimoto's timeattack of SMB3, and went crazy.  I had been playing a lot of SMB3, and to see it done that way was incredible (later I realized the difference between timeattack and speedrun).  Through a bunch of hotlinking, I found sdkess's site, vortiginous.com, which linked to this one, and I've been a faithful follower ever since.
deet
one day i found a site called samus.co.uk, then metroid 2002 and after that i found SDA, i couldn't belive my eyes when i saw kip's 1:04 metroid prime run.
MGS for PS1 forever.
I was a lurker on the Quake speedrunning side probably at least a year or so before I actually had bought Quake. I had the shareware version on my computer, but I couldn't wait to see those runs. After I finally bought the game, I downloaded every single run I could find and watched QdQ over and over and over again. It was the only thing that I'd show people when they'd come over to play games. "Dude, you've got to see this..."

I was going to send in a run of a Quake level but the level wasn't even on the site yet. When the level did get on, another person had already beaten my time by a minute. I had about 1:20-ish...he had like 16 seconds. I stopped trying to speedrun Quake.

Thankfully the Others section opened up when I was at college and had a fast internet connection. After I saw that someone had gone through MP2 I figured I'd try and do MP1.

I had already recorded myself beating games before the Others section, but mine were more of story runs than game runs, but oh well.
I saw the SMB3 time attack by Morimoto, and the rest is history...
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
The SMB3 time attack by Morimoto, which later I heard rumors of it being slowed down big time on a emulator to make his job alot easier, esspecially with all the presise button pressing. >_>

Then later in attempts to show that run to my friends since I forgot the url, I found archive.org and they had speedruns from this site, which I found. And immediately fell in love.

Esspecially with all the individual level runs by David Gibbons. I would practice like 700 hours a day trying to perfect levels to his skill. Now, I am ready to prove that with my single segment run of SMA3, coming soon. (topic found in new gen games) Wink
...
I found out through the free DVDs that EGM gave out a couple of times. They had a little video smashing of a few run clips and they posted their times. I then Googled in Speed Demos Archive, and the rest is history, or present, if you will.

I finally bugged my girlfriend into buying me a few DVD runs as well, because this is a place that really should be supported to the max.
A jerk by the name of bartendorsparky forced me to watch his metroid prime world record, which led to me seeing this site, which led to me getting into speed runs.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Speaking of that, did Radix pay EGM or something to get this site advertised so hugely?
I'm addicted to games
No

In fact I was a bit miffed that the dvd was only for people who bought in the store, not subscription holders! I guess I misunderstood but I thought it would be the other way around! I'm surprised as many people saw it who did.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Yeah, it was a pretty lucky coincidence that I got it, my subscription had experied that month, so I had to buy an issue in store. Lucky you. ^.~
