Not always. Some people use a pen to press buttons quickly (I'm not sure exactly how this works) and that doesn't count as TAS IIRC. But that's the only situation I can think of.
I think those guitar hero playing robots are the best example. They are playing the real game and not an emulated version but it's obviously tool assisted.
Probably anything in the form of a macro would count as tool-assisted, usually very precise button sequences in a short span of time. Of course it doesn't mean you necesserily create a good speedrun.
Are there published runs that explicity state the use of a pen? (excluding DS ;o)
The line is where you want to draw it, I personally wouldn't do that for example, although I can imagine the use of a weight strapped to the controller to keep a button held passable by the judge specially if you don't tell. Another minor tool assist is using your clothes to lower the impact of the controller buttons while playing street fighter or so, doubt you'd get rejected for that
Well the most basic I could think of is that anything that gets you more output then you have to put in is forbidden. I.e. tools that (help you) press 2 buttons (or a sequence or 1 button multiple times or w/e). In case of the pen you need to perform an input with your hands that's equal to the result it gives, so I don't think people would mind that. Same goes with using clothes to lower the impact I guess. But then again I'm not the expert here ;). And I can't really imagine how using a pen would be faster. Just button mash the crap out of that controller.

False. See: Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Half-Life: Opposing Forces. I don't think anyone really cares because, come on, seriously? They're awesome. But yeah, you can't insta-turn around 180 degrees without outside help. Or bunny hop perfectly across a giant field with varying terrain.

these are now disallowed in other games, but allowed in these games only due to grandfather clause.
just wondering: sometimes I use a desk as a "tool". Sometime (n64 controller) I need to press the c buttons at the same time as a or b and it's not applicable to use my index finger, so I just press the controller on the underside of the desk to press the buttons. if I can't do this in a speedrun, it's no biggie, I can probably use my knee or chin instead of a desk.
would it count as tool-assisted if you use a "dot" on your screen as "crosshair" for FPS games that don't have a crosshair? they do that on goldeneye on the-elite.net.
