Ok, here's a HOWTO on getting transparent water on ID1 levels.

0. (Optional) make a backup copy of your PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK files from your quake/ID1 directory.

1. Get the vis patch. It can be found on the web, for example here: http://www.mandelmassa.net/files/vispatch-id1.zip. Extract all the files from the zip into an empty directory.

2. Use the vis patch. Go to the directory where you put the patch and doubleclick INSTALL.BAT. Enter your quake directory, say Y to replace the original maps, press any key to start the program and wait some seconds. It only takes about 10 seconds, really.

If you use GLQuake you're done now. If you play WinQuake and want to have transparency you'll need to apply an extra patch. I guess this is not really necessary for demo recording, but it might be nice anyway. Observe that the above steps have to have been done in order for this to work.

3. Downlad Dr. Splats Water Hack. It can be found on the web, for example here: http://www.mandelmassa.net/files/waterhack.zip. Extract all the files from the zip into an empty directory.

4. Here comes the tricky part... It seems you have to extract the maps from the pak files. Use dzip to open PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK. Drag all map files from the paks to the directory where you put the water hack.

5. Start a command shell (dos prompt?). work your way to the directory where you put the water hack. Then type waterhack *.bsp . This removes the water textures from the maps. It only takes a second.

6. Delete the maps from the PAK files. Yes. And then, move the bsp files from the hack directory to your quake\id1\maps directory. Now you're done!
