Lay waste to everything...but I still love SDA!
You can record demos, can't you? Then someone else can record the videos for you (or you can record them later yourself).
Hmm, that's sad. I played very little with this, but it was exciting.
I'd love to see a run of this game, but i only know one glitch, you can buy several heroes on a level, after you capture a human worker with necro. Or was it in the classic?

So, go for it!
No you cant record replays in the campaign...
Waiting hurts my soul...
Some helpful info:

Stupid has the first three levels up: http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,4958.msg295843.html#msg295843
Those times are faster than the ones listed in this thread: http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,4904.0.html
This is an older Stupid thread: http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,4018.15.html

obviously try to contact these others for tips on running the levels.

What about getting the levels as skirmish maps? I remember getting all levels of Reign Of Chaos from an Internet Cafe!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'm happy to see a complete run of TFT, I really really hope that you will also do the Bonus Campaign (The Founding of Durotar), I think it can be very interesting speedrunning-wise, with a lot of planning to do.

defying gravity
- Go 'iseedeadpeople' and 'whosyourdaddy', kill all enemies and destroyable objects on the map, note down the items they drop and consider which might be worth getting
- Consider every reasonable strategy, look for possible shortcuts or timesavers etc. (again, cheats are your friend)
- Test all your strategies and find out which is the fastest
- Go hardcore

Free BONUS tips:
- Check for ways to abuse the avoid-item-cooldown glitch (v1.21 and below). It's incredibly useful in the Bonus Campaign, I dont know if it can be put to use in any of the regular ones
- If you want to go for real perfection, open the maps and check the triggers for possible additional timesavers
Does the ingame timer stops while in an ingame cinematic is playing?
What im getting at here is: Does it pay off to avoid triggering certain cinematics?

About that item cool down glitch! Isnt that irrellevant since i will be running on the newest patch?
Go play spacechem !
Good luck i your attempt
You have an avantage for your first run : someone has run the game already (even if its just a part of it). So you have a goal for the first levels-> beat the current time. That should introduce you to the speedrun world and give you some practice for the not yet runned levels.

The game has an editor, so in theory you have access to all the map informations : what drop you can expect, gold / kill, map layout, items available, real objectives, monster stats, ...
If you are familiar with the editor you can check things like pathability, range of various attacks/spells/...
Waiting hurts my soul...

You can run the game on whatever version is available. You don't need to play on the latest patch. If you are playing on the latest patch though, you should be aware that if a glitch is available in earlier versions that make it faster, then your run might be obsoleted because of that.

I have noticed that on elf mission 4 one of the little naga worker bastards that you have to kill for a side quest drops a staff of teleportation. A potentially VERY usefull item. It allows you to staff your hero to any unit/building anywhere on the map.
Now i cant really think of all the situations where this item will be usefull. But i know it will be damn usefull in the last elf mission. If you staff Furion to illidans base, then he can remove the trees blocking your way to the undead base, plus you have access to whatever items he is carring at this point in the game... But that also got me thinking: Couldnt you just buy a townportal with furion and then take the entire army down there and then potentially have a stronger attacking force earlier in the game?

EDIT: Nvm i just tested it out... You lose either the staff or the townportal from your inventory at the start of a new mission Sad

I should note that it is already possible, albeit problematic in a speedrun, to transfer items from Furion to Illidan in the final NE mission, and Illidan's items subsequently pass over to the Human campaign. It's therefore possible to play the Human campaign with the Shadow Orb, for example. Whether that makes up for the effort is questionable, though.
Pain is temporary, honor is forever
I would be glad to see this speedrun.
Still havnt got my new pc yet which is why nothing has happend to this run yet...

Btw can you explain what you mean with illidans items "subsequently pass over to the Human campaign"?
How experienced are you playing vs the computer? My experience is in starcraft, where the computer systematically makes mistakes in both micromanagement and build choices. Because of this, it is sometimes beneficial to use a unit composition that would totally fail against a human. Starcraft example: no Terran player ever makes medics & marines vs protoss, mostly because they get dominated by (a) reavers and (b) high templar. But there are in fact TvP single player missions where the computer will not build those units at all, so that marines turn out to be quite effective. On the other hand, the computer usually defends his bases quite well, so that hit&run tactics with only a few units (vulture drops etc) are not as effective as they can be vs humans.

Other example: if you send an scv to the opponent's command center right at the start and do a tiny amount of damage, the computer will send all his SCVs in pursuit, so the computer will have no income while you lead his scvs on a merry chase and build up your own base.

I'm not sure if it's any help, but my advice would be to keep in mind that some noob strategies may actually be very effective vs the computer.

if you attack human, forgot attack what (any unit? peasant? building?) with some unit (peasant? any unit?), they tend to use call to arms (militia?). I doubt it can be use on campaign though since usually they already have some defense or something

Any items Illidan finishes the last Night Elf mission with, he'll still have when you first get control of him in the human campaign.

Um what? What possible benefit could there even be to making an AI human opponent use Call To Arms anyway seeing as on hard they have infinite resources anyway?
-_-"
I don't know they starting resource. & like I said, I doubt it can be use on campaign since usually they already have some defense set up
The thread's been quiet for a while, but I thought I'd add this anyway. This is what I meant by transferring items from Furion to Illidan in the last NE mission. They're just barely close enough at this ridge past the orange Undead base to exchange items. It's obviously hard to justify in a speedrun, though.

FINALLY! I got my new pc so at last i can start running the game!

I already did a few practice runs of the first chapter where i have almost been able to match stupid's time. So im gonna start recording soon!

Anyways i'v got a practical question: I record with fraps, but the raw video files takes up a shit load space as you probably are all aware of... What im curious of is what program do you guys recommend when compressing the videofiles? The only thing i ever used was windows movie maker!

Also: Should i record with ingame music? Normally i turn off the music when i play!
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
keep the ingame music, you could lower the volume if you want to

you can get anri, its the one promoted by the site

If you want to do it slightly more manually get VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod, those are just for utility since they are fast and light.
then get Avisynth and learn to make scripts, with this you can do editing
then get MeGUI, with this you compress to mp4

Uhm basically i wanna do as little editing stuff as possible. I just wanna know the pure basics and right now the important thing is just to keep the run without flooding the harddrive.

Use Anri-Chan, then.
Anri-chan is so easy a caveman could do it. Be sure to make low, medium, and high quality MP4s and to include a station ID before you delete the original fraps of it.

Looking forward to seeing TFT done. I wish I could help out with strategies and stuff, but I kinda suck at RTS games  Wink

Hey, just noting that I'm back on the track too, and I've already gotten a pretty OKish time for xNE 1-4 (boy, I hate ships!).
Can't tell how long I will keep at it though, running TFT is one huge test of endurance Tongue
