When trying to load an .avi file in vdub, I get the following error:

---

VirtualDub Error
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

---

The only codecs I have installed are those in the Defiler Pak, in other words ffdshow, Haali Media Filter, VSFilter, DivX ;-) Audio, AC3 Xform Filter and HDTVPump.

The error message comes up when trying to open any .avi from this site in both the stable and experimental latest releases of vdub.

Apparently there's something I'm missing, but what?

I ran into this problem once when I was learning H.264 (with suitable decoders installed). What I did was to open the ffdshow VFW codec config and enabled a few things in the decoder menu.

No go... changed my settings so it was like in your pic, but I still get the same error.
Try reinstalling with latest DivX.
... oO;
Have you downloaded and installed AviSynth?

Actually, no. Doing that now.

Edit: Avisynth installed, but still no go.

You sure you changed the settings in "VFW codec configuration" and not one of the other config windows? Because if DivX 5 is set to libavcodec, VirtualDub should be able to find it.

Avisynth is something else entirely; I don't think Dekudude knows what he's talking about.

Well, my ffdshow decoder window looks like this (this is with default settings):

TIOLET!
That's the wrong config, note the difference in the upper left corner.

You are supposed to use the one called "VFW codec configuration".

I don't HAVE those tabs. The only other window for ffdshow video configuration DefilerPak gives me is raw-only, and that's something completely different since there's only one thing in the list. That's the "Configure video options..." window for me. But since it says "ffdshow video decoder configuration", and you're on the decoder tab, shouldn't it be the settings for the same thing?

TIOLET!
Its not the same thing, I have the same config as you but it is called "Video decoder configuration". Vdub follow the "VFW", media players follow "Video decoder".

Hm. I can't find that window anywhere.
TIOLET!
I suggest you get this version of ffdshow. It works a lot better.
Your almighty lordship
I suggest you get the right codec and not use ffdshow, but that's just me.

Well, got it to work now.
