Hi,

I got this strange problem with compression using Xvid for a couple of days now, and I don't have any idea how to fix it.

Quote:
Problem description:
I got 2 video clips (video and audio uncompressed). I put them into Ulead Video Studio 8 and then I want to save it as "avi". UVS asks me (like every one of this kind of application) which codec to use. I choose Xvid and Single Pass (I got 1.1 version installed). Then when I want to watch output avi using any avi player, player opens for a 0.5 sec and then close. When I choose other codec or I choose "uncopmressed video", I'm able to watch output avi. So it looks like there is a problem with Xvid.

To check this I do so: I put 1st clip into VDub, then I append 2nd clip to it and I save all as avi. I choose Xvid and Single Pass. And now I can watch output avi without any problems! So there is no problem with Xvid!

One more thing: when I put that "corrupted" output avi into VDub, I select "Direct Stream Copy" both for audio and video streams and I save it to an avi file I can watch output avi w/o any problems!

I don't have any idea what could be wrong with my software or what could I do wrong with compression. I have reinstalled UVS and XVid, but it didn't help.

Strangest thing is, that it was working ok (I mean, I could watch output file compressed with XVid from UVS without any problems) and the only thing I did was removing ATI codecs because I get rid of Radeon and have installed nvidia graphic card (I have used Driver Cleaner and removed everything what was related with ATI).

Does anybody can help with that?

Strange indeed...i think the drivers might be the reason it's behaving like this. After installing new NVidia drivers, i couldn't watch the video of ANY kind in almost any player....almost, cause in VLC and MPlayer it worked good. What is your (new and old) video card? Try older drivers - first uninstall these that you have now (with NVidia you can do this using Add/Remove programs). Then try the version 71.89 from the NVidia website. Works fine for me.

Never encountered something like you did, so i don't know if it will work though...

BTW. Widze ze tez jestes z Polski Tongue Witam Wink

Old card was Radeon 91000, new one is GeForce 7800GS.

If the codecs (or anything else) was the cause of "corrupted" compressions by UVS, why it didn't affected VDub compression? - that's the biggest mystery for me :/

It seems like the problem is in UVS-Xvid group only.

That is strange...besides the drivers, i don't know what might be the cause. It surely isn't a codec problem, cause you wouldn't be able to encode the video in VDub as well...
Have you updated version of UVS/XVid in the last time? That could be a cause too - new versions of codec and/or program collide, and it's impossible to encode XVid in UVS

No, I haven't. I got the same versions of UVS/Xvid as I got when everything was working ok.

I have got ghost image from before installing the new graphics (in which Radeon drivers are installed). I have got my old graphics too, so during weekend I will check if my problem is caused by graphic's codecs.
Upload a small sample of a corrupt clip.
beware!
http://rapidshare.de/files/22683368/output_bad.avi.html - corrupted output file

http://rapidshare.de/files/22683944/output_fixed_by_VDub.avi.html - corrupted output file, which I then inserted to VDub, set "Direct Stream Copy" for video and audio streams, and then save as avi.

There is slight difference in those files size and also in audio streams details.
plays fine in quicktime (mac).

All three DivX / Xvid / Libavcodec decoders played the corrupted file.

The FOURCC of the file is correct too.

Strange indeed..

Plays well and without a problem here too.

It isn't strange. It's STRANGE, if you know what i mean :P.
well, it just means that his setup is borked (likely because of the driver fiasco he described) and he needs to reinstall.

O lol, I found it. F***ing Divx 6 was causing the problem. When I've deinstalled it - I could play "corrupted" files without problems. Then when I've installed Divx 6 again, problem with playing those files has occured again.

I found it, because yesterday I've noticed, that when I play any avi file (even those compressed with Xvid) the divx icon appears in my taskbar. So it looks like divx is used to play xvid-compressed avis. And when I throw divx away from my computer, there are no problems more.

Strange thing is, that I had once both xvid and divx installed, but recently I have installed new versions of both (xvid 1.1 and dix 6) and maybe thay cannot coopoerate :/

Anyways, thank you guys for your concern.
Go to divx's config, uncheck "play generic mpeg-4".
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
warning: Is there even a reason to have divx installed if you already have xvid?
beware!
1. unchecking "play generic mpeg-4" doesn't work for me  Sad
2. "Is there even a reason to have divx installed if you already have xvid" - uninstalling Divx help me, so recently I have asked myself same question Smiley
