Waiting hurts my soul...
I ended up splitting 6-4 because there's just too much luck. I needed 3 level ups to go my way, not to mention 2 mage AIs and no blocking. Took about 10 hours to get, but I got the first segment just now. So, next up is the very last segment of this run. I'm going to start streaming attempts at it soon.

Amazing run. This record has stood for about 15 years and I’m going to make a run to beat it. I’m starting a new thread and I’m going to try to go lower than 5h 35m.

I am doing a Speed Run of Vandal Hearts. The current record of 5h 35m by ZenicReverie has stood for 15 years, but I believe I can beat it. I'm going to post a video for each level with my strategy and analysis of play.

Level 1-1 Valley of Thieves

Reset to begin from scratch. View the Game Intro and on to the Main Menu. In the options I switch to Fast Text Speed.  Then I Select a New Game and we are into the Prologue. We watch Magnus and then we are introduced to our main characters and the first battle in on.

Victory in 2 turns. Move everyone towards Zoot on the 1st Turn, take some damage, and kill Zoot on the 2nd Turn.

Key Parts of the Battle - Diego gets a counterattack on Zoot to weaken him. Ash kills a brigand on a counterattack to get an extra 100g. I will need that extra cash when I go shopping after 1-2. Clint moves next to Zoot but doesn't attack. We need Clint there to get an extra support boost so Ash can move around to Zoot's back and get the kill.

300g for Killing Zoot and 1 Brigand. Save directly after the battle at 0:04.

1-1 Valley of Thieves

Level 1-2 Dover District

Victory in 6 turns. I think I got this one perfect. If you move Ash the maximum every turn and take damage with Clint and Diego they will die on turns 5 and 6 while Ash is safe at the church entrance.

Key Parts of the Battle - If you move Diego to the perfect spot on the 1st turn and turn his back, all 4 of the ghosts will attack Diego and he will 1 hit kill them on counterattacks. Diego will be close to dying but he will level up twice. Then Diego hits the switch, and Clint turns his back to the archers, which will allow Ash to slide right by. Clint dies on turn 5 and Diego dies on turn 6.

290g for killing 4 enemies and having 2 good guys go down.

I like to hit the shop after 1-2. I upgrade Clint's Sword and Diego's Bow. It's important to make sure I can kill Golem's in 3 hits and Diego can 1 hit kill the bats in 1-4. I also buy an herb for Clint and Diego to help them stay alive and to use to gain experience points. Started with 590g and spent 575g so I have 15g remaining.

1-2 Dover District

Level 1-3 Palace Ruins

Victory in 7 turns. This is a tricky level. I found myself balancing speed versus gaining experience for Diego. In the end, I decided that Diego must get to Level 8 and I have to do that as fast as possible. So I attack a guy while Diego and next to him, which allows a counterattack and wastes time. I don't finish off one golem and I allow him to attack and damage Diego. I heal Diego a second time at the end when I don't need to. But it gets him to Level 8. I like splitting up the group. I send Ash up the stairs and Clint and Diego pair up and go to the right.

Key Parts of the Battle - You need some luck with Ash's stats in this level. When Ash is Level 6 his attack stat can vary. When the golem comes down the steps to attack, Ash's counterattack will hurt him anywhere from 22-25 HP. If you hurt him 22 or 23, you will not kill him on your next attack, but if you hurt him 24 or 25, you will finish him off with an attack from behind. Similarly, Ash's level 7 defense stat is important when dealing with the final 3 golems. If it's too low, you will not be able to withstand 4 attacks from the golems without needing to heal again. Also make sure to get the Fire Gem near the corner of the map.

810g for killing 9 enemies.

Before saving I transfer a couple of items. I give Ash's herb to Eleni so she can use it in 1-4 for an experience boost, and I give the Fire Gem I just found to Huxley so he can use it in 1-5.

1-3 Palace Ruins

Level 1-4 Rhine Bridge

Victory in 4 turns. It's probably possible to beat this is 3 turns, but it might take longer. I like this way. I like to get Ash going up the side. If he is elevated, he can kill the brigands in one hit. Not Blocking and not getting blocked is huge in the level, because we do want to do some healing for experience. We want to get Ash to Level 9 and Huxley to Level 8 here.

Key Parts of the Battle - When Diego is Level 8, depending on his attack stat, he will either hit the bats 44 out of 45, or kill them in one hit. I like to position Diego upfront on the first turn, and make sure both bats attack him and he kills them on the counterattack. I don't care if he gets poisoned. Actually, the poison weakens him so that when Eleni uses the herb on him, she gets over 50 XP. While the party finishes up with the first wave, Ash sneaks to the back to take care of the rest, and Kira enters and takes care of the other 2 bats. With Huxley picking up XP for healing Ash.

1560g for killing 12 enemies.

1-4 Rhine Bridge

Level 1-5 Sand Dunes of Sea

Victory in 2 turns. Draw the Big Ant to you and kill it in as few hits as possible. If you kill the ant arm out front and position your people right, none of the other ant arms should be able to attack you. We want to get Kira to Level 9.

Key Parts of the Battle - I like to get Kira in the perfect spot to attack the ant arm, and get attacked by the Big Ant. Then I use spells and items on the Big Ant because they do a lot of damage and the Big Ant can't counterattack. Clint and Diego sit this one out. The Big Ant can be killed in 5 Actions. A Kira counterattack, Ash's Ice Storm, Eleni's Dark Star, Huxley using the Fire Gem we gave him earlier, and Kira finishes him off.

900g for killing the Big Ant.

I like to go shopping after adding Grog. We have 3285g at this point, which is just enough to get what we need. I upgrade Grog's sword to make sure he does max damage. I buy a Fire Gem for Grog to use against Hassan. I buy a Mage Oil for Kira and Eleni to help them get to Level 10, and I buy an Herb for Diego so he can survive 2-1. Leaving me with 195g.

1-5 Sand Dunes of Sea

Level 1-6 Gadar Sea

Victory in 3 turns. Head up the left side of the boat. If you play it correctly, the enemies on the right side of the boat will never move, and neither will Hassan. Obviously since there is only one way across, if any enemy blocks an attack it will cost lots of time and possibly force you to take another turn to win. This level could be done a little faster, but it's important that Ash gets to Level 10, and Huxley and Diego to get to Level 9. Clint sits this one out.

Key Parts of the Battle - Grog goes to the front. With an upgraded sword he always hits 25 on a counterattack. If Eleni is still Level 7 she will always hit the buccaneer the remaining 24 with her Dark Star to kill him. Strangely if she is higher than Level 7 sometimes the Dark Star spell hits less than 24. If Diego and Kira's attack stats are high enough, they can kill the corsair together. It's important to move Diego up so he can attack Hassan on Turn 3. Ash moves up and uses Ice Storm to weaken the buccaneer, so he can kill him on counterattack and then counterattack a second guy, all for additional XP. Make sure to move Grog next to Ash so they can't attack Ash from the side and so Ash will only be attacked 3 times instead of 4. Use Huxley to heal during the battle so he gets to Level 9. On Turn 3 you can kill Hassan in 3 actions. Use the Fire Gem that we bought for Grog, use Ash's Ice Storm, and finish him off with Diego.

1020g for killing Hassan and 4 other enemies.

Use the In-Battle Save at the beginning of 2-1.
1-6 Gadar Sea

Level 2-1 Yuzu Village

Victory in 7 turns. Pretty Standard Strategy. Go up the right side. Use the box to block the villagers on turn 2. Get set-up on Turn 3, and move the box again on Turn 4 to block them again. If you move Diego just right, he can move into position to fire an arrow over the fence in the back corner on Turn 7. I definitely take extra time in this battle to get party members up to Level 10, or close to Level 10. Using Mystic Shield and Mage Oils and Herbs takes extra time, but it helps make 2-2 extra short. Diego, Huxley, and Kira should all reach level 10 here.

Key Parts of the Battle - If Ash is Level 10 and Huxley is Level 9, you can level up Huxley with 3 Mystic Shields on Ash. Also after Huxley is Level 10, Eleni and Kira can use Mage Oils on Huxley for extra XP. Also, Kira can use her Herb to heal Huxley if we let him take damage. I also find the Moon Pie with Eleni and take damage with her so she can heal herself. This gets her within 33 XP of level 10. I use Ash to get the Mage Oil in the chest. Clint kills a few statues to get up to Level 9.

1330g for killing 7 statues.

After the battle I transfer Ash's Mage Oil to Eleni. Then I head for the Dojo to advance Ash, Diego, Huxley, and Kira.

Diego and Kira - For my run I decided to go with all hawknights. Their speed and power against most enemies is really helpful in so many battles. There are definitely some battles where I miss the ability to perform ranged attacks and it's harder to kill flying enemies, but I think overall its better to go with hawknights over archers.

Huxley - I like Huxley as a monk. His mobility and attacking is helpful in many levels. The Stone Shower is important in one future level, the Thunderfalsh is very useful in a few others. His Perfect Guard spell definitely comes in handy a couple of times as well.

I don't do any shopping after this level. Everyone has the items they need to get to level 10. My hawknights do all of the killing in 2-2 and they recieve the best available spear when they Advance. So I wait to shop after the addition of Dolan, Amon, and Sara.

2-1 Yuzu Village

Level 2-2 Ygdra Canyon

Victory in 5 turns. Diego does almost all of the work in this one. With two hawknights, they can take care of the enemies with one-hit kills and can fly on the water, so there is no need to hit the switch to clear the canal. Everyone else pretty much stays put after they get to Level 10. Everyone should be Level 10 at the end of this level.

Key Parts of the Battle - Diego moves out in front and takes damage from all 4 guard dogs. We want him to get poisoned. Clint still has an Herb and can heal Diego to level up. Grog started with an Elixir and can cure Diego to level up. We got Eleni close so if Huxley does a Mystic Shield then Eleni can use the Mage Oil we just gave her to level up. Kira takes care of the two guys in the corner and gets the Mood Ring. Diego goes to the other side and takes care of business. Amon does just enough attacks to level up. Sara can heal Diego and use Mystic Shield to level up.

3150g for killing 15 enemies.

After the battle I head to the Dojo to advance everyone else.

Clint, Grog, and Dolan - I'm going all Swordsman with these guys. Either way, these 3 are pretty much useless in the last two chapters. I like the mobility of the swordsman.

Eleni - Obviously I'm going with Sorcerer all the way.

Amon - Another Hawknight.

Sara - I like having Sara as a Bishop. There are levels where healing is important and the Holy Pressure spell can come in handy too.

After the Dojo I go to the shop. I have 5695g which is just enough to buy what I need. For Weapons, My Monk and My Hawknights already have upgraded weapons. I never upgrade the staffs for my Sorcerers and Bishops. So I just need to upgrade 4 swords. For Armor, I don't upgrade any helmets or caps. Everyone seems to stay alive just fine with whatever headgear they start with. I do upgrade the Chain armor and Robes for everyone, which leaves me with 120g.

2-2 Ygdra Canyon

Level 2-3 Loris Beach

Victory in 3 turns. This level can be tricky. The enemies move differently sometimes based on where your people are and what your stats are. I try to use the poison to my advantage, and I try to get 1 hit kills whenever possible. My biggest goal is to get Kira to Level 12 by the end of the level.

Key Parts of the Battle - I use Eleni's Piercing Ray every turn here. First on the guys in the middle. I also use the mood ring that Kira just got in 2-2. I only kill 3 of the 4 guys, but the last guy is easily killed on counterattack. I like to move Dolan by the swamp and let him counterattack the two ghosts. They both get poisoned. So after Eleni uses Piercing Ray on them on Turn 2, they die by poison. At the bottom, it's important to move Clint to a spot where the archers can't attack him, and it's important for one of the archers to be in a spot next to an elevated square. If Clint attacks an archer from the side and an elevated position he will kill the archer in 1 hit. Finally, I like to move Diego way over towards the enemies at the top, but behind the tree so the archer can't attack him. After he kills the soldiers and weakens the ghost, I move him back and let Sara heal him for XP. Then I finish off the rest. I like ending the battle on the golem dying by poison.

I don't worry about gold anymore. I'll easily have enough gold to buy the things I need for the rest of the game.

2-3 Loris Beach

Level 2-4 Castle Ruins

This level is tough and quite long. This is 1 of 3 levels in the game that I did in 2 parts, utilizing the In-Battle Save function mid-battle. ZenicReverie used the same strategy in a few battles also, including this battle.

Victory in 8 turns. I used the In-Battle save at the end of my 3rd turn. The keys to this battle are deciding how many people you are going to get up the elevators, how many people you are going to get to the end, trying to move those people are far as possible each turn, how many enemies you decide to kill, and how to get your own people dead that you want to die. In the end of I decided to get 5 people up the elevator and 4 of those people to the end.

Key Parts of the Battle - On the first turn I move Diego and Kira way up and keep everyone else out of range for the two side archers. If you move Diego to the correct spot and face him the right way, all 3 soldiers on his side will attack and he will significantly weaken them on counterattack. Diego will die. If Kira is moved on the water and behind the tree, she won't take much damage and weaken two of the soldiers. Then on the 2nd turn she can move all the way to the elevator switch. If she is Level 12, she will 1 hit kill the soldier that never moved. Amon can finish off another soldier and trap the other soldier in his square. Amon will die on the next turn, but this will allow everyone on the left side to advance safely. On the other side, it's important to kill the soldiers in a way where all my people are facing the elevators. But Sara should face the opposite way and be in the corner. That way the archer will attack her from the square that is furthest forward. This will allow Clint to move up the elevator and kill that archer all in the 3rd Turn. Grog, Dolan, and Sara will stay at the bottom and get killed by archers. Kira will get across early and occupy and kill a statue and 2 of the ghosts. Ash will kill an archer and get to the end as fast as he can. Huxley will get the Mood Ring and keep it all the way until 4-2. Clint will weaken the Golems and then make it to the end. Eleni will kill the statue, use Piercing Ray to kill the weakened golems, and get killed by the final ghost because she is slow.

Don't go right into the Magnus Battle. Go back to the menu and save at 1:29.
