Level 2-5 Magnus Battle

I had to come back and replay this level. The first time I didn't worry about leveling up Huxley, but then when I got to 3-3 I realized I wanted his Stone Shower attack spell. So I came back and re-did this level and the following levels to make sure I got Huxley to Level 12 here.

Victory in 3 turns. In this level I was able to take advantage of a couple of enemy quirks. Some enemies don't move until you are in their range or until enemies earlier in the level are dead. So if you don't kill certain enemies and if you don't get too close, the golems and 2 of the madsoldiers should not move in this level. The second quirk is that if an enemy boss has ranged spells that they can cast, they will move forward into open space to cast their spell and leave themself open to attack. I really benefitted from having 3 hawknights this level. It's important to have Sara at Level 12 so that she has Healing Plus and can heal the damage done to our hawknights after Turn 1.

Key Parts of the Battle - The first movements are important. I moved my two hawknights a little further than everyone else and spread them out. This ensures that each of the two archers on the side can only attack one person, the hawknight on their side of the map. We draw in the ghost and the 2 madsoldiers. Then in Turn 2 we kill them off. We move our hawknights up and heal them with Sara. This makes Magnus come forward to use his spell. On Turn 3 we kill him in 4 actions. 3 hawknight attacks and 1 Piercing Ray.

Level 2-6 Guard Dogs

Victory in 4 Turns. Really easy level. Half of the level is spent watching your people jump after leveling up. I just spread everyone out and try to go as fast as possible.

Key Parts of the Battle - Sara can't help much, but on Turn 1 if you use her to block the path at the bottom of the map, it will keep that one dog from making life miserable. I send the hawknights up the middle and my sword people fan out. It's important to move everyone the maximum amount each turn. You don't want to spend any extra time or turns because a dog got out of reach, or you had less guys than dogs in an area. Amon and Diego get 3 each. Clint and Dolan get 2 each, and Ash and Dolan both get 1.

After this battle we have to watch the exposition to end the Chapter 2 and the cutscene intro for Chapter 3, which is quite long.

I use the In-Battle save fucntion at the beginning of 3-1.
2-6 Guard Dogs

Level 3-1 Plain of Sorrow

Victory in 2 turns. Another really easy level. You just move into position to get attacked and kill the sparkies with counterattacks. If Sara is a monk, it might be possible to win in 1 turn. But my Sara is a Bishop so I have to move her and have her attack the last guy on turn 2.

Key Parts of the Battle - Move Grog in the middle of two enemies so they both can attack him. It was important to make sure Ash gets attacked twice so he can counterattack and get enough experience to get up to Level 14. This unlocks his Rolling Fire Spell, and we need that for 3-3.

After the battle, Zohar joins the team. I make sure to advance him before saving at 1:51.

Level 3-2 Tower Defense

Victory in 5 turns. I found a really good strategy for this level. I decided to let 3 of the towers, get attacked and make sure I protected 1 of the towers. Specifically, the tower on the east side of the map. I discovered that if you just don't move on the 1st turn, nothing really bad happens. Then I surround the east tower and basically use Zohar's Phase Shift twice to clear out a bunch of enemies.

Key Parts of the Battle - I don't move on the first turn. On the 2nd turn I surround the east tower, making sure that Zohar is closest to the middle. They kill that 3rd tower, and get only 1 attack on our group. The rest of the enemies are all congregated near the middle of the map, and Zohar can clear the board with 1 Phase Shift. The enemies repopulate in the corners and will start coming again. They get a few attacks on after turn 4. Then Zohar can kill a bunch of enemies with another Phase Shift on Turn 4.

After the battle we get transported straight into another battle, so we use the In-Battle Save function at the very beginning of 3-3.
3-2 Tower Defense

Hey, I took the liberty to merge the two Vandal Hearts threads and rename it so it's the only thread from now on out!

Amazing seeing another segmented speedrun emerging from the ether! I hope this will end up in our submission box... though I know it'll take a while to watch it XD
Level 3-3 Terasu Village

Victory in 4 turns. The first turn is key in this level. I played around a lot with the different options. I needed to get the Unicorn but also have that person involved. I wasn't sure how far to move people up the bridge. Do I try to keep Grog alive or not? What should I do with the boulder? Should I use a Zohar spell on the first turn? How can I kill the bats the best. It all came together on this run. Clive ended up getting paralyzed, but I think that helped. He just would've attacked Zoot and then Zoot would have gotten healed.

Key Parts of the Battle - It's important to get the unicorn here. I use Ash to get it and I'll keep it all the way until 4-5. I don't use a Zohar spell on the first turn, just move him up with Grog so the sword guys attack them. This makes both of the bats go towards to the other side. I push the rock out of the way on the first turn. It only ever hits the bat and I'd just rather have Clive attack the bat when he moves. On turn 2, I start with Ash and use his Rolling Fire to hurt the guys blocking the bridge. I had to use Sara to finish one of them off. That clears the way for Zohar to get towards the middle of the map and use his Phase Shift. Then Diego kills the bat, Dolan kills a guy, Grog kills a guy and Huxley uses his Stone Shower spell to kill the other two bats. Sometimes the combined power of Huxley's spell and Zohar's spell will not completely kill the bats, but luckily for me it did. On turn 3 we do another Phase Shift, kill the Warlock, and pick off everyone but Zoot and the Deacon. I purposefully don't attack Zoot because if his health is relatively high they won't heal him. Then I win on turn 4.

Save after the exposition at 2:07.

Level 3-4 Basil Gate

Victory in 3 turns. This level can be made very easy. If you move everyone just right, and get Dolan in the right spot and turn him backwards, the enemies should line up in the same row as the boulder. Also the Warlock will move up and cast a spell on Dolan, leaving himself vulnerable to be killed on turn 2. The boulder takes half of the health away from whoever it strikes and then Zohar's Phase Shift can kill all of the people hit by the boulder. He doesn't always, he must have the right stats, because sometimes all of those enemies will be left alive with 2 HP or something like that. It's important to get Zohar to Level 18 here. That will give him 36 MP for the next level, so he can cast Phase Shift 3 times.

Keys to the Battle - As I said before, get Dolan in the right spot. I like to move Zohar in front of the boulder so he loses half of his health too. I use Sara to push the rock and then heal Zohar and Dolan. This is very helpful to get Sara to Level 16, which unlocks her Holy Lightning spell, which we will need for the prison battle. Then Zohar uses Phase Shift, Huxley moves next to the bat to provide support so Diego can kill it, Grog kills the Warlock, and Dolan moves up to get attcked by the final bat. It was good that Dolan was paralyzed. It saves time because we don't counterattack and the deacon doesn't heal the bat. On turn 3 I finish off the last guys.

Level 3-5 Reed Highway

Victory in 6 turns.  Ash will tell you not to move after turn 3, but you should. If you have Zohar at Level 18 before this battle starts, he will have 36 MP and be able to cast Phase Shift 3 times.

Key Parts of the Battle - I only need to move Zohar and Diego to win this level. No matter what Zohar's stats are, I believe he will always be able to kill any enemy in this level with 3 Phase Shifts, except for Lando. It is possible for Zohar's Phase Shift to damage Lando enough to kill Lando in 3 hits, but usually Lando will have some HP left and need to be attacked by someone else. There is 1 dog that doesn't get hit by the first Phase Shift, so I like to use Diego to kill that dog after the second Phase Shift weakens it. Zohar must move as far as he can each turn, or else one of the dogs will get out of range of the 3rd Phase Shift and you will lose.

Level 3-6 Inside Prison

Victory in 6 turns. I'm quite sure this is the fastest way to beat this level. It's important on the first turn to position your people just right. Then you need to hit the switches at the right times and let the enemies move into range. Eleni is usually at Level 13 at the start of this level. But you need to get her to Level 14 for her to have Phase Shift. But if you are Level 13 at the beginning of the level then she only has 26 MP. This means that if you use Piercing Ray to kill an enemy you will be down to 22 MP and will only be able to cast Phase Shift 1 time.

Key Parts of the Battle - So it's best to move Amon into the hallway, but 1 square short of how far he can go. This will trigger the enemy to attack Amon but be vulnerable to an Eleni melee attack from behind. This will get her up to Level 14. Amon can fly through the guy in the hallway to get to his back. Clint and Darius move up the center hallway and draw that central enemy in. On Turn 3, Amon hits the first switch, Clint kills the central enemy, and Eleni moves toward the center. On turn 4, Darius can just barely reach the middle switch, which opens the gate near Amon, and Amon can just barely reach the next switch. Eleni moves towards the middle and kills 2 guys with a Phase Shift. Keep moving Eleni towards the very middle and all 3 of the remaining enemies will be in range of a second Phase Shift if you get Eleni to the right spot.

Use the In-Battle Save function immediately upon starting 3-7.
3-6 Inside Prison

Level 3-7 Outside Prison

Victory in 6 turns. Let Eleni do her thing. Sacrifice Darius, keep Clint out of Danger, and move Amon to the precise spot where I moved him. Speed around the board with the right people, kill the people in your way quickly, distract some of the other enemies, and then Dumas comes to you.

Key Parts of the Battle - On turn 1. move Eleni to the center. If her attack stat is high enough, she will kill the juggernauts with 1 Phase Shift. It's also good to hurt 2 of the bats and the grenade guy near where our party comes in. Allow Darius to die. If you move Amon to the exact spot that I moved him to, both of the Warlocks will move toward him, which his very helpful. On turn 2, we can push the boulder and hurt the Warlock and a sword guy. Then Zohar can use his Phase Shift to finish off the grenade guy, the sword guy, and harm the warlock. I got Sara to Level 16 so she can use Holy Lightning to kill the Warlock. We want to move Diego and Ash up quickly. Eleni moves towards the bats and casts another Phase Shift. Amon moves but stays in danger to lure the other grenade guys and the other Warlock toward us and away from Dumas. On Turn 3, I use Eleni to cast Roman Fire on all 3 bats, this will kill the 2 bats that were hit by the 1st Phase Shift. I move Diego to kill the Deacon, I move Ash and Sara up as far as they can go, and I move Huxley into range of the grenade guys to keep them occupied for another turn. On turn 4, Ash kills the last bat with Rolling Fire, Dumas will start to move towards us, and all of the other enemies are too far away to be a factor in the battle. On turn 5, we move Diego into range of Dumas and get Ash and Sara in position. I can kill Dumas in 4 actions. Usually, the first is a Diego counterattack, but of course Dumas blocked it. Luckily, I still have Eleni down at the bottom with 2 MP so I can use her Dark Star, along with Ash's Ice Storm, Sara's Holy Lightning, and Diego attacking Dumas from behind to finish him.

After the Cutscene there is a lot of exposition. When we get to the menu, I don't save immediately. I go directly to the Dojo and advance Darius to a Hawknight. Then I head to the shop. At this point I have over 47000g which is more than enough for what I want to do. I upgrade eveyone's weapons, except for Eleni, Sara, and Zohar's staffs. I upgrade everyone's helmets and headbands, as well as their Scale armor and Robes. Finally I grab some Mage Oils for individuals who may need help getting to Level 20 later, Clint, Grog, Dolan, and Darius. I still have over 5000g left when I'm done.

Level 4-1 Khanos City

Victory in 3 turns. You need to decide who can die and who can live. Whoever you want to die, ideally you'd like for them to die in 1 hit and not counterattack. Someone has to hit the switch. I decided that I didn't want to go for the Aura Gem or the Holy H20.

Keys to the Battle - Obviously Ash needs to live. I decided that instead of trying to get Diego and Amon killed, I might as well just take them to the end of the level. Dallas and the two armored guys are great for killing my guys with only 1 attack. Zohar and Eleni are too high of a level to get killed by the armor guys, but Dallas is capable. So, I had to find a way to position my people so that Dallas would get to my sorcerers. I like to send Clint up towards the left and let him get killed by the Crimson Hawk. Similarly, I like to send Dolan to the right, hit the switch on turn 2 and get killed by the Crimson Hawk on that side. Then I get 3 people to the end and win the level.

Level 4-2 Great Masai Forest

Victory in 5 turns. Through careful planning I found a strategy where I sent a couple of people left and a couple of people right, but none of them had to cross a bridge and go up the mountain. Because I have 3 hawknights, I could send them all up the mountain in the middle and let them do their thing up there.

Keys to the Battle - On turn 1 I do 2 Phase Shifts just to kill the first 2 bugaboos. It takes extra time, but I just hate those two guys being alive and causing trouble. I send Clint to the right and Grog to the left and into vulnerable positions to take damage. On turn 2, I take out all 4 of the Wights that came to attack us. Zohar uses his Phase Shift to harm the 3 Bogaboos on the right bridge, the Huxley can use the Mood Ring that he got in 2-4 to finish off all 3 of the Bugaboos. My hawknights and Eleni start climbing up the middle. On turn 3, A couple more Wights move toward us. Huxley and Zohar kill the one on the right. The Wight on the left conviently moves behind the 2 Bugaboos on the left, who are behind the boulder. Ash can push the boulder on all 3 of them, and then use Rolling Fire to kill them all. Amon crosses the water to the left and gets in a position where the 2 Wights will come attack him. Diego does the same on the right. Darius was attacked by Bugaboos and uses Megaherb so he can survive and help kill the enemies up here. On Turn 4, Eleni has made it up the mountain and casts Phase Shift because sometimes Amon doesn't kill his Wights all the way and Darius can't kill a Bugaboo by himself. Diego grabs the Aura Gem before making a kill. On turn 5, we kill anyone who is left.

Level 4-3 Old Town Warehouse

Victory in 2 turns. I'm really proud of this one. Everyone gets to the right spots and does their part, and I get it done in 2 turns. The biggest time saver is finding a way to manipulate the egg worms into places where they are vulnerable. If they stay up high or stay near the edges, you have to chase them and it can add multiple turns to the battle.

Keys to the Battle - Phase Shifts are big in this battle. I like to start by sending most of my people to the east side of the map. There is one specific spot where Eleni's Phase Shift can harm all 4 skeletons, and both Golems on the east side. Then Zohar can move to a spot and use Phase Shift to kill the 2 Golems and harm 3 of the 4 skeletons. Ash can use Rolling Fire to finish off 1 skeleton, and Amon can go and kill another. Everyone else is moving to draw enemies to a particular spot. Grog moves north and turns his back toward the north eggworm. Clint moves to a specific spot and turns his back to the west eggworm. Dolan, Huxley, and Sara all get in a line and turn their back to the east eggworm. Diego and Darius move west and get in position. We want all or most of the Skeletons and Golems to come to the middle to attack them. Diego must face West the west eggworm attacks Clint. On Turn 2, Eleni and Zohar move west and use their Phase Shifts again. They should kill all of the skeletons that came to the middle because Darius or Diego have already counterattacked them, they shoudl kill both of the golems, and they should kill the west eggworm because he moved to that vulnerable spot to attack Clint. Ash kills the East eggworm, Grog and Amon finish up the guys on the north side, Dolan and Clint finish up on the sotuh side, and Diego and Darius go kill the final skeleton that didn't move.

Afte the exposition, I head to the Dojo to advance Eleni and Zohar into Enchanters. Save after leaving the Dojo at 3:12.
