I had a thought about where to put this (here, recording help, or general chat). i thought i'd post it here.

a little while ago i was online, chatting on mirc and working on the delghtful run when my HDD suddenly snapped. the computer was alot quiter than usual, but i could still play for a few seconds before it froze. the load light was and is still permanently red.

resetting, the computer can't boot. until my friend replies (he installed windows ME for me, helping out after i was hit by a virus years ago), i'm helpless. needless to say i got alot of important stuff (videos to upload, and alot of quake demos for records im working on) on the dead computer and i dont want to lose them.

i'll be refreshing this for the next half hour or so, keeping watch for any replies 'cause this is a drama at the moment (other family members have assignments and stuff to do). any help is greatly appreciated.

Well shit. Even if your drive has gone kaput, there are ways of recovering the data. How far does your computer get in booting up?

it gets as far as

Verifying DMI Pool Data ......
DISK BOOT FAILURE

right before the windows ME picture should show up.

as long as there's a way to pour all the data my family needs into another computer (plenty of homes with welcome arms for less than 10 gigs worth of data), it's all good.
