I enjoyed playing both of these games many years back and would really love to them see the speed ran although I think there may be some problems with doing that as I know seven needs an external program to make it run at its normal speed and I don't know about underworld.  The other thing is I'm doubtful of if I'd run it as its been many years since I've played them and it would require several attempts for me to properly work out the fastest way to complete, however if people found a way of running them and recording and aided in planning I would consider it.  Anyone else's thoughts, opinions would be appreciated.  Also I searched and didn't find any topics for either game but if they exist please link me.

YES YES YES ULTIMA UNDERWORLD YES YES YES!

I started doing a speedrun plan for Ultima Underworld 2 (the first game seems harder - much more combat). I've managed to record it using DosBox + FRAPS, but obviously that wouldn't be accepted here.

Here's that plan I mentioned.
Cool lag you sound keen I just found my copy of ultima underworld but I never played the second one although it did seem similar.  My major problem is the last time I played Ultima Underworld was about 5years ago so I have no idea on how to beat it quickly so I'm going to start playing through it work it all out again and then start working out the fastest route.  What I was really looking for is some assistance in fast tracking this with assistance from other people
"I like to watch"
I wish there was a reliable way to get WinUAE to record, I want to do an Ultima 4 run for a couple people.

I'd love to see an Ultima 7 run, I've barely played it (beat 1-6) and my mouse doesn't let me play it on my computer.

As long as the run has 'damn thee!' being yelled while killing a cow, I'd watch it.
Yes I would love seven to be run although it is very broad and you'd probably need fairly good knowledge of the game to do it well as there is a lot of side stuff and there are many ways to get various items etc.
"I like to watch"
That reminded me, would this run do any of the expansions? I forget which one was just for 7 (was it silver seed?) and not for Serpent Isle (was that one forge of virtue?).  Whatever it's called, was the expansion planning on being used?
There was an expansion for both (seven has two parts to it which are entirely different games)  but I don't imagine if I did it I'd be doing the expansions quest but just aiming to complete the game as quick as possible as the expansion I believe just adds a side quest
"I like to watch"
Yeah, I know about the 2nd part (Serpent Isle)  Tongue

I remember hearing that the rewards from one or both expansions were gamebreakingly powerful, which was a main reason I was asking if it was going to be used.
For the first one the reward is Full stats and the ultimate weapon so if it was fast could be worth it but I think it is a very difficult challenge I haven't beaten the game in quite a while
100% runs=great to watch
My only advice is to state the obvious and head on over to GameFAQs/google and pour through the FAQ's/ fan site info and whanot to get up to speed on the general stuff fast as opposed to replaying the entire thing blind from scratch.

Ultima runs can ONLY be a good thing.

Well just had a quick look at underworld and that is going to be diffiuclt

a) the control as clunky
b) visibility is very poor
c) I forgot how big each level is
d) the FAQ for it is very skimpy

I have played Ultima 7 not too long ago (3years and I remember it being big but I think it would probably be exponentially easier for me personally to do the underworld as I know it better I've beaten seven a couple times always many years apart but only beaten underworld once.  Also sevens controls are easier.

Edit: I was playing seven today with the expansion the added side quest is defently worth it, it can be done fairly quickly at the very start and it offers full stats and the ultimate weapon which has the ability to one hit kill any one

Oh wow, finally someone might do Ultima VII! I've been wanting to see this game recorded for some time and is right up there with Curse of Monkey Island and Thief 2 on my anticipation list.

Personally, I would recommend using DOSBox to play the game...Exult, while well intentioned, is a little...incomplete and fundamentally changes the gameplay experience, as the engine is at best an approximation of Ultima VII's original code.

As for a speedrun, technically there is a way to finish the game quite speedily, assuming you use the game's built in cheats to acquire necessary endgame items. These 'cheats' (the roof of Christopher's blacksmithy in Trinsic) are found quite legitimately in the gameworld, but I would think a speedrun of actually playing the game would be much more satisfying.

As a personal request, if you end up recording this game, try and set up the audio to be as best as possible, e.g.: Sound Blaster Pro sfx/midi, or even better, a Roland MT-32 w/ SBPro.

Thanks and good luck!

I have been wondering about this myself. I suppose DosBOX is right out of the question, and output to a recording device is quite a hurdle on a DOS platform.

One major difficulty with recording Ultima 7 is that even if you install DOS or FreeDOS on a modern system, the game runs fully un-throttled (from what I recall, I have not attempted this recently).

Perhaps it would be best to propose a speed run of Exult. I know that there are several differences between Exult and the original. However, the most recent CSV (at this time 1.4.03) is rather complete and very enjoyable. Unfortunately when using Exult, there is no good way to prove that the usecode hasn't been altered to trigger events before they are supposed to happen.

I would like to hear from a more authoritative voice on this matter. Specifically, would we need to dig up a 486/50mhz box and capture the VGA output, or would another solution be acceptable? For starters, a commercial x86 virtualization platform could be used such as VMWare Workstation or Parallels.

Secondly, would it be required to run the game under the DOS operating environment, or would FreeDOS be acceptable as well?

Finally, and this is to everyone, would an Exult speed run even be of interest? Obviously it would have to be considered a different game as the differences are too great. Also, there is the very real posibility of forking Exult (or simply adding some configuration features to the main code base) to provide reliability and proof of non-tampering.

Yesh, too many questions, no answers.

Well my plan was to just do a run on either DOSbox or exault which ether runs it the best and just make a run for those who are interested.  I don't think the run would ever be SDA approved just there has been no agreement yet of an acceptable way to make runs of DOS games.  Also you could probably do at least 2 different types of runs: A quick one using the cheat room and a proper one doing it normally.  The second would definitely be more interesting.  ATM I'm in the process of working my way through the game again to work out what tasks need to be done to complete the game and determining what the quickest way to do it is.  ATM I believe doing the Isle of Fire is worth it and getting the magic carpet at the start definitely should be done
Completed my First Rerun of Ultima 7 all in all it was fun a lot faster than my other ones knowing where to go helps.  So the plan be to:

Complete tristen and get spark and Iliol go loot the the chest below tristen for some armour and weapons go to the capital raid the weapons store for some more armour get shamio run up and get the magic carpet, fly over to the isle of fire rip through the quests for full stats and a nice sword.  go get honey talk to emps stop logger talk to wisp talk to alagaranda (the smart guy) go to the land of the dead find out the answer to the meaning of life go get the notebook.  Talk to wisp see time lord go to sphere go back to time lord get hour glass do tetrahedron enchant hour glass destroy sphere go to cube get cad make helm destroy cube get key go to black gate kill minions blow up gate.  I will flush this out tomorrow for those interested in the details but for now its sleep time as it is midnight here and I'm ready to sleep if I get time between assignments I will tell you the full plan tomorrow
I'm gay, seriously.
Wow, that's good news. Ultima VII is great game.

Here are some random ideas I had in mind:

I have the feeling that it's not worth the time going to the Isle of Fire. Getting glass swords might be faster instead. You may need mana to cast spells, but I believe the other traits are mostly useless since you can avoid damage easily and go half-pacifist through the game.

In the last battle, check which enemies are necessary to kill. I think you don't need to kill all of the minions.

There's also a bug that can give you invulnerability, but I can't remember how to do it. It had something to do with the snake drug substance. (Maybe useless.)

Luck manipulate moongates for traveling fast? (Run needs to be segmented.)

Build stairs with boxes for shortcuts? (Maybe in Serpent Isle.)

In case you don't know, here are full maps of the Ultima VII games: http://ian-albert.com/misc/ultima7maps.php

All in all, sounds VERY interesting. Good luck with it!

Yeah I rethought it last night and also concluded that glass swords would be better.  The spells I'll buy are unlock, seance and dispel field as they are needed to complete the game I also will get mark recall for fast transport.  I'll also get the magic carpet early as it makes getting around easy especially while you're putting down markers.  I'll only use a party of 3 members as its easier to maintain and thats all you need if not too many to complete the game.  I'll also get no armour and to make up for this I will use rings of invisibility (I will only have the Avatar where his when needed otherwise the hole run would be black and white.  Things you need to do from memerory:

Get honey to talk to the emps
Get whistle from emps to talk to wisps
Get the answer of life to get the note book to be able to talk to the timelord
Go to dungeon of despair to gain knowledge of the trap
Talk to timelord to find out about the hour glass
Talk to Nicodemous about the Hour glass (get the hour glass when you first go past the house)
Steal the etheral ring from the saultan
(Some where before here I need to get the black rock and the wand)
Awaken the mage in moonglow to get ring enchanted
Destroy tetrahedron generator
Go to Nicodemous to get hourglass enchanted
Destroy the sphere generator
Go to the cube to find out about its defenses
Get the helmets
Destroy the Cube
Get the key from bucceneers den
(Some where either now or a bit before I'll need to get at least I think 4 glass swords)
Go to the isle of the avatar and go through all the mazes traps (the rings of invisibility are useful here to get past the liches
And then destroy the black gate

Other things to do may include: Raiding the mint to get money to purchase spells and and regants.  Depending on avalibility of invisibility rings I may use invisible all in its place.  At no time will my people eat they should be quick enough they don't need to.  I don't think I'll bother with weapons as I think there are only 5 enemies in the game you actually have to kill.

Places to have marked to be recalled to:
Moonglow is useful
The sphere generator when your doing it
the cube is the same as the sphere
Nicodemious' house could be useful
Timelord could be useful if you can mark one there
Maybe the wisps house
Maybe the smart guys house

I think that is all you need I can't think of other areas you need to visit more than once.  For glass swords I beleive there is an Island about the middle of the bottom of the map which has chest with 4 or 5 glass swords in it which could be handy

Edit:  I will do my run useing exault, although I can run it with DOSbox it runs very poorly and would be annoying to play and watch the exault one runs fine on my computer.  I also have to determine what the best application to record with is going to be

Have you tried adjusting the CPU cycles for DOSBox? Granted, it depends on your CPU, but with the value around 7500, Ultima VII runs silky-smooth on my machine.

Serpent Isle runs even better, as that game's engine has a built in frame limiter for faster CPUs than the game was designed for, and doesn't require the careful cycle balancing that The Black Gate does.

There is also this nifty program (along with VDMSound) which will let you run the original game engine. This combination may give you much better framerates:

Bad news all my piece of shit compy can't run Ultima 7 in its true form by any of those means which forces me to use exult, I read through that stuff and it made it run but it is jerky and unpleasant.  Sorry all but I will have to do it on exult but I don't think this should effect it that much
Nubsauce
Well, running Exult would mean the run might be acceptable for SDA, as it is a separate game rather than an emulator. I'd still like to hear if Exult would be an except able title to speed run.

Also, will you be using the latest stable release (1.2) or a CSV snapshot?

There are further considerations as well. The most important is the resolution you will be playing at. Playing the game above the original resolution (320x200) is a bit breaking, as it allows you to manipulate objects from much farther away that was intended. For instance, it is possible to grab the Notebook without building the staircase from the table to the door, which is quite frustrating.

Also, would you be running with the 10 FPS option or the standard 5?

Finally, would your run incorporate the various hidden stashes of plot items that are scattered throughout the world, or would it only acquire such items through the normal game mechanisms?

As you may be able to tell, I am quite interested in this run Tongue

I'm not sure about the resolution but I like it at 640x480 but I guess it should be played at 320x200,  I'll be doing it by collecting them properly

OK so for those interested here is my plan for the start

In Trinsic

Get the key from the stable and tell Iolio to leave, Then go to sparks house to speak to him to learn of man with hook, tell him to leave your party,  go down to the infirmary and talk to the guard and learn of the crown jewel, now you can talk to the mayor to report to him and you can get the password off him.  I plain to leave trinsic by the south and get the stuff in the chest, these in include a full set of magic armour, flame sword and a sword of defense as well as 600gold which is the main reason for going there.

Off to see the king

Now I'll head north to the kings castle and I will pick up the hourglass on the way.  Things to do once I'm at the captipal include getting the spell book and buying, telekinesis, unlock magic and dispel field.  After that I head off to get my magic carpet.

Starting the real quest

You need to speak to the jypsy in minoc to be able to advance the story line but on the way I'll stop by the other town (can't think of its name) to get the four pieces of black rock I need and the wand as well as purchasing seance,  I also need to work out whether  or not I'll need to buy any reagants.  Now head on to Minoc and talk to the jypsy.

Getting to the Wisps

To talk to the wisps I need to do a few things, first off I stop by the bee caves for some honey you can just run in and out to get it, its fairly easy,  then you need to talk to taylor up in yew about the wisps and the emps,  now you can head down to the emps who will tell you to stop a logger,  you go get the logger to sign a contract and then return to the emps, you are given a wistle and now you can speak to the wisps

Getting the notebook

First off you need to talk to Alegrandar, then head for the island of the dead.  First cast seance so we can talk to people.  Get an iron bar from the graveyard and pickup the three potions from the womans house, speak to the mayor and blacksmith, at the blacksmiths pick up the music box.  go to Caines and make the potion, head to horaces castle and speak to the woman then place the music box on the ground and play it, back to black smith,  now we enchant the iron cage.  This is where I have a problem just you need to wait for midnight so they will come and sleep but with no party you can't sleep for a set amount of time so I'll have to work out how I'll get this timed properly.  After you use the cage and potion on horace go through all the convisation stuff and the sacrificing and get the answer to the question.  Now its back to try and get the note book.  He'll give you a key now we can go through all the annoying not book stuff and head back to the wisps.

We're off to see the time lord the wonderful time lord of time

We head off to moonglow see the time lord, go to the sphere generator, go to the time lord, see Nic, see Time Lord, Wake up the mage, get the ring, go to mage lady, some where now or early we need to have picked up some glass swords just we are going to need one soon, go to tetrahedron generator, kill beast, see Nic to get hourglass enchanted, go to sphere, destroy sphere, go to cube, get cad, go to black smith, go to cube, go to buc, get key, go to Isle, do challenges, kill fellowship and gate.

OK so I got lazy in the last part but I'll fix it later I'm going to do a slow run testing resources and working out what I do and don't need.  If people would like it could possibly produce a quick run done by going to the blacksmiths shop and using the cheat area, this would be to test recording and wet people appetiete ready for the real run

Rake:

I did a bit of tinkering tonight on the specifics of the first part of the game (Trinsic through to the Time Lord). We have much different approaches.

I suffer from a lack of knowledge regarding the tough parts of the game. I have never played past the point of the Time Lord. Until tonight, I didn't even know about the generators (read an FAQ Tongue ). However, I have found quite a few things you seem to have missed.

So, are we going to work together on this project? Or shall we be adversaries? Either way, it'll be loads of fun Tongue

Rake: 2007-05-14 01:20:30 am
I think its best to work together atm the main thing I'm working on is trying to cut down this first part just there is a lot of talking and rather large amount of travel.  As far as after the timelord goes at first its a lot of backwards and forwards between him and other people and destroy generators.  Then once you destroy all generators you have to get a key from bucceneers den and go to the Isle of the Avatar where there is a series of annoying little trials.

If you could outline what you do for the start it would be very helpful but I found alot of what I did necessary to be able to get certain conversation segments out of other people.

Also I believe I'll need 5 glass swords to complete the game, 1 for the deamon in the tetrahedron generator, 1 for a padlin in the Isle of the Avatar challenges, Then 1 for each of the final fellowshp members who are guarding the gate.  The other weapon I'm considering using is the fire doom staff as its very powerful but could be very dangerous.

Also you may have read in an FAQ the you only need unlock and seance this is untrue you do need them but you also need Telekensis (to be able to get to the key in bucceneers den) and dispel field (in one of the isle of the Avatar challenges a liche raises a few energy fields blocking your path and the only way past is buy using dispel field.  I see no need for a party as they only slow you down especially when trying to use the magic carpet.  And incase you hadn't noticed you move faster when running/flying diagonally than when you go straight so most of the time I thnk  your better off zig-zagging than going straight

O and I'm running it at 320x200 resolution and at 10fps and I have the scaler set to 2x, this gives better looking graphics and no advantage that wasn't intended when making the game I feel these are fair and optimal settings to use and if anyone can recomend what audio settings give the best sound quality please feel free to inform me.

Also is no one going to discuss Ultima Underworld just I have been dabling with it a bit and it is a huge game and I rekon it would make for an impressive speedrun, unfortulantely my knowledge of UW is minimal atm and there aren't any good/comprehesive FAQs on it and each map is freaking huge so it will take a while for me to complete let alone work out an optimal route and work out the minimum goals.
I'm gay, seriously.
Has anyone tested if destroying the black gate is possible by flying over the Isle of Avatar and zapping it from above, through the mountain? Or does the wand check if there's a ceiling blocking the way? Oh, nevermind, it's not possible...

Here's one idea for traveling fast: Die! You get respawned at Paws. You would need to talk to the owner first, though. And the magic carpet is probably faster anyway.

By the way, are we absolutely sure that the magic carpet is the fastest way to move? Would it be possible to change the route a bit and take the horses from Trinsic? Horses go very fast on land. And how about buying a ship from the capital city? It's as fast as the carpet, right? But you have probably considered these options already.
Why use multiple vechiles when you can use one that is faster and crosses every where and also gives you the advantage of landing in alot more conviente places with fewer collisions, and you need the carpet to get in to the meditation retreat with out joing the fellowship plus you can get the carpet straight up so I see no reason not to use it, the gate is pritty secure you could get the key and the required spells and see if you could rush to the gate and get the bad ending but if your doing that you might as well go to the cheat room and just go from there
